Borna Barisic: West Ham United consider January transfer of Rangers full-back

David Moyes can find his ideal Arthur Masuaku replacement in Rangers full-back Borna Barisic amid reports West Ham United are considering a mid-season deal.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Irons are monitoring the Gers’ star left-back ahead of the January transfer window after losing Masuaku for the foreseeable future following knee surgery.

The Hammers believe there is a need for top-quality fresh legs in the position following Masuaku’s operation, while introducing competition for Aaron Cresswell after the three-cap England international’s struggles in recent games.

Barisic has emerged as the latest in a line of left-backs to be linked with a mid-season move to the London Stadium, with West Ham also said to be interested in FC Barcelona’s Junior Firpo and Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Rangers chiefs expect Barisic to be a target for several sides in the upcoming window with his contract entering its final 18-months, but they will still demand upwards of £8m after snubbing approaches from Leeds United in the summer.

Forget Cresswell, sign Barisic

Barisic has been in sublime form under Steven Gerrard as Rangers look to claim the Scottish Premiership title this season, with the Liverpool icon lauding the 28-year-old for his consistency which ensured interest was inevitably high in the summer.

“We’re not surprised if there is any interest in Borna,” Gerrard said, via quotes by the Glasgow Times. “Of course, we’re not because he has been a consistent performer for us for some time now and has started the season so brightly again.

“But he has signed a long-term deal here, everyone loves him, the fans like him and he was in the running for Player of the Year. If someone did come, they would have to bring an awful lot of money with them.”

Rangers are rightfully loath to part ways with Barisic, who has provided an astonishing 10 assists and two goals in 26 appearances across all competitions thus far this season, despite failing to create or find the back of the net since September in the Premiership.

His output has remained high nonetheless, with Barisic averaging 2.7 accurate crosses and providing 2.2 key balls a game in the Scottish top-flight, along with 0.7 shots, while winning possession with 1.1 interceptions, 0.8 successful tackles and 1.0 clearances, per SofaScore.

It would not take long for Barisic to warm the hearts of Moyes and West Ham supporters were he to move to east London in January and hit the ground running with the same impact.

O crescimento deixa Muricy extremamente empolgado.

O time diminuiu o número de passes errados.

Kurt Zouma could’ve completed a perfect window for Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur could have rounded off a perfect summer of business with a swoop for one of Jose Mourinho’s former players…

What’s the word?

According to L’Equipe (via Sport Witness), the north Londoners had a bid rejected for Chelsea centre-back Kurt Zouma during the transfer window with their local rivals wanting around €45m (£40m) to let him leave Stamford Bridge.

It’s claimed that the 26-year-old wouldn’t have been against an exit with Premier League rivals Everton also having an offer rebuffed.

However, Zouma has since gone on to cement his place down under Frank Lampard, forming a formidable partnership with veteran Thiago Silva.

Levy fail

Mourinho originally signed the French international for the Blues in 2014 but it has taken until now to truly see his potential come to fruition.

In seven league starts, Zouma has averaged 5.1 clearances, 3.3 aerial duels won, 1.3 interceptions and a 90.2% passing accuracy, via WhoScored.

Upon his arrival, the Special One claimed the central defender was a player with “big potential” before quickly suggesting that he would be a “big player for Chelsea for many years” just a few months into his maiden campaign.

Spurs know about him all too well too as he was part of the side that silenced Harry Kane last season – in fact, he absolutely terrorised the England talisman.

Frank Lampard won both matches over his old boss, but it was the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which stood out most. Zouma made four clearances, two interceptions, won 100% of his aerial duels and of course, kept Kane quiet, via SofaScore.

With Davinson Sanchez heavily out-of-favour at Spurs, not being named in their last three league squads, and Joe Rodon seemingly not yet ready for a crack at the big time, a £40m swoop for Zouma is something that Daniel Levy should’ve absolutely done.

Mourinho knows him well, so he could’ve fit straight in as an option beside Eric Dier or Toby Alderweireld.

AND in other news, Spurs may forever regret not signing their next Dele Alli in 2019…

West Brom should unleash Dara O’Shea after Ahmed Hegazi sale

West Brom are still winless in the Premier League this season but a more pressing saga has developed off the pitch.

The Baggies’ hierarchy sanctioned the sale of Ahmed Hegazi to Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ittihad over the weekend, in the process saving on his mega £70k-per-week wages.

The Express & Star claim the deal is worth around £10m in total to Albion.

However, it’s a decision that has angered Slaven Bilic as he wanted the Egyptian international to stay at the Hawthorns, especially outside of the English transfer window.

He said: “It definitely wasn’t my decision. It wasn’t a football decision to be fair. I am very disappointed. We are a team that needs all our good players. He is the player that has know-how in the Premier League, that has vast experience, a national team player, a great professional and played last week against Burnley.”

Indeed, West Brom picked up their first clean sheet of the season versus the Clarets, where Branislav Ivanovic and Hegazi played together for the first time.

Yet just days later, he’s sold and the Baggies go onto draw 1-1 with Brighton.

Nothing can be done until January – if chairman Lai Guochuan is even prepared to back his manager. According to reports, the Chinese businessman has been unwilling to invest in the playing squad, even despite the desperation to get Grant through the door.

Eventually, he got his man, but you can’t help but feel the sale of Hegazi was some sort of financial consequence with Grant costing in excess of £15m.

It’s time for Dara O’Shea to step up to the plate and playing alongside Premier League-winning veteran Ivanovic could be perfect for the club and his own career.

Bilic is a huge fan of his, previously claiming he is “the future” at the Midlands club, so it’s time to hand him a regular starting berth going forward.

Whilst O’Shea’s former boss Matt Taylor at Exeter City, lauded him as an “exceptional” talent who’s got a “chance of making it all the way in the game.”

The 21-year-old has started four Premier League games, where he has averaged a whopping 3.5 clearances and 3.3 tackles each match, via WhoScored.

No other Baggies defender has managed more tackles per appearance than O’Shea, and after picking up his first senior cap for Ireland, he ought to be playing week-in, week-out.

AND in other news, £18m signing’s current West Brom form must be a major worry for Bilic…

West Ham fans laud Arthur Masuaku after shutting down Traore in Wolves win

West Ham United clinched their first points of the new Premier League season with an impressive 4-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the London Stadium.

Irons boss David Moyes will no doubt be delighted with his team’s display, even if he had to watch from home with Alan Irvine in charge.

Jarrod Bowen bagged a brace either side of the break with goalscoring midfielder Tomas Soucek and substitute Sebastien Haller kickstarting their campaigns with a pair of strikes.

The three points lifts the Hammers away from the drop zone and plenty of supporters were delighted with the performance of one man in particular.

Lining up at left wing-back Arthur Masuaku enjoyed a game and a half, assisting the final goal of the game, and here’s how some of the West Ham faithful reacted…

The 26-year-old was tasked with the tough test of defending against Adama Traore, the player who recorded the most take-ons (183) during the 2019/20 season – by comparison, the fifth-best was Nathan Redmond with just 79 as per Squawka.

Masuaku recorded three tackles, one clearance, one interception and four key passes. He also won seven duels and had a crossing accuracy of 100% via SofaScore.

The Wolves star, on the other hand, failed to register a single shot or key pass, failed with all eight of his crossing attempts and also lost possession 18 times.

It’s ever so clear to see who won that battle and that’s something many Irons fans have reacted to on Twitter…

There were plenty of comments aimed at his teammate Aaron Cresswell too, the usual first-choice at left-back. Some were pleased at his introduction as it allowed the Englishman to perform at left centre-back.

Whilst others were quick to claim that the DR Congo international was the better option in the role.

Liverpool have dodged a bullet by not signing Ismaila Sarr

Liverpool came into this transfer window needing a new winger to act as a backup to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

They got their man last week as Diogo Jota signed from Wolves in a deal that could eventually be worth £45m, but before the Portugal international arrived at Anfield, it looked as though the Reds were going to go in a slightly different direction.

The one name that was consistently linked throughout the summer was Watford’s Ismaila Sarr.

Watch Liverpool Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Signing a player from a relegated side is always a risk, but Liverpool have found great success in doing just that in recent years, with Gini Wijnaldum, Andy Robertson and Xherdan Shaqiri all becoming bona fide first-team options after being brought in on the cheap from a relegated side.

However, Sarr wasn’t going to be available for a cut-price fee, Watford were looking for £40m, and at one point it looked as though Liverpool were ready to pay it.

The problem is that at £40m, you’d want a player who can consistently live up to that price-tag, and Sarr very rarely showed that sort of promise last term.

The 22-year-old scored just five goals and assisted a further four last season, and while it could be argued that his teammates were holding him back, other players have been able to put up better numbers in worse sides.

Harry Wilson had more goals last season for a Bournemouth team that were also relegated, while Gerard Deulofeu had an identical goal contribution record in the same team, and you don’t see him being linked to any £40m moves.

The Reds were almost swindled by Sarr’s hype of being an expensive player last summer, but luckily a better option came up in the window and they jumped at the chance to take it.

Michael Edwards had a massive dilemma when it came to signing a new winger, and luckily he managed to get it absolutely right.

Manchester United: Marcos Rojo is ‘likely’ to leave Old Trafford this summer

Marcos Rojo is ‘likely’ to leave Manchester United at the end of the season, according to his agent.

The Red Devils have tried to sell Rojo in four of the past five summer transfer windows but haven’t succeeded so far. The veteran is currently on loan at Estudiantes de La Plata after agreeing a move in January.

Rojo has barely featured at all for his boyhood club, as a combination of injury and bad luck has limited him to one solitary appearance. The outcast has fallen out of favour with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and is considered surplus to requirements.

Jonathan Barnett, who also represents Daniel James, told Stretty News: “I couldn’t comment on what Solskjaer thinks but I think it’s obvious, I think with Rojo, probably [a move] is more than likely somewhere else.”

After years of trying to get rid of him, it looks like the club have finally got their wish. The 30-year-old arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in 2014 for £18m (as per Transfermarkt).

Barnett didn’t disclose a destination for the defender, as he admitted that he is “not sure” if the Argentine will stay in his homeland. However, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that his time at the Theatre of Dreams is coming to an end.

United were unhappy after he was caught breaking the lockdown rules on two occasions earlier this season and issued the defender with a stern warning. Estudiantes don’t seem to pay too much attention to such behaviour as they are keen for him to stay at the club.

The centre-back, who is currently valued at £7m via Transfermarkt, is reportedly in favour of making his loan deal permanent if the two sides can reach an agreement. However, Los Pincharratas are struggling to cope with the uncertain times that many clubs are also experiencing and will only be able to afford another loan.

Whatever happens, everything points towards Rojo heading out the door, and United are ready to cut their losses as his contract will expire in a year anyway.
