Fabrizio Romano drops Arsenal transfer update

Fabrizio Romano has dropped an exciting Arsenal transfer update about the terms of their deal to sign Takehiro Tomiyasu on deadline day.

What’s the story?

The Gunners rounded off their summer transfer window by signing the Japan international from Serie A side Bologna, and now Romano has revealed the cost of the deal.

Writing on Twitter, he revealed: “Official and confirmed. Takehiro Tomiyasu joins Arsenal on a permanent move from Bologna for €18m. Paperworks signed, deal completed. #AFC #DeadlineDay”

Arsenal fans will be buzzing

At just €18m (£15.5m), Tomiyasu certainly isn’t the most expensive player Arsenal have brought in this summer, but once again, he fits the bill in terms of the kind of profile of player they are looking for: young, lots of potential and with versatility too.

The Japanese ace is just 22, and can play anywhere across the back-line and in holding midfield too, and he could quite feasibly play as a right-back or as the right-sided centre-back in a back-three if Arteta chooses to go down that route.

His teammate at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, Mitchell Dijks, dubbed him “very strong” and a “true Japanese warrior” at a press conference, via Tuttosport.

In fact, speaking about the defender’s potential, former Japan coach Alberto Zaccheroni said: “He is a complete player and Bologna got a real bargain with Tomiyasu. He’s a good player and was compared to Maya Yoshida, who has been playing in Europe for a decade. He’s got the quality to be a real star.”

And, speaking after confirmation of the signing, Arteta himself said: “Takehiro is a strong defender with good experience in Serie A and at international level. He’s a versatile defender with great defensive qualities, high technical ability and composure on the ball. He will be an important member of our squad. We look forward to Takehiro joining up with us when he returns from international duty.”

Romano’s update that Tomiyasu will just £15.5m, especially in this market where the Gunners spent £50m on someone like Ben White, is sure to have Arsenal fans buzzing.

Not only does the low fee ensure the pressure and scrutiny on the Japanese defender is much lower than the pressure on White, but it also allows the Gunners to chance to make a genuine profit on him if he were to really develop and another side comes in for him in the future.

A win-win all round.

Daniel Vettori, the New Zealand captain, praised the team’s openers for setting up the 36-run win over West Indies in the second Twenty20 international in Hamilton. Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum put on an match-winning 130-run stand in 11.4 overs after New Zealand chose to bat, helping the hosts break their eight-match winless streak in Twenty20s.”It was outstanding stuff from Jesse and Brendon and they played the way I think everyone expects them to play every time they go out there,” Vettori said. “They looked good from the start. I think they both settled themselves a bit easier than in Auckland and they gave themselves that base.”Once Brendon and Jesse do that I think they give themselves an opportunity and you don’t need that many balls to pile up a big score and they showed that today.”One of the major threats for New Zealand heading into the game was Chris Gayle, but debutant Ewen Thompson, who took the new ball, dismissed the West Indies captain in his first over. “Ewen Thompson came in in his first game and did the job that was prescribed to him. We were pretty thankful for that,” Vettori said. “We were pretty ruthless the whole way through and I think the way we fielded, the way we caught and the energy in the field led us to that victory.”The teams had shared the two-Test series 0-0 and Sunday’s win in Hamilton helped New Zealand square the Twenty20 series 1-1 after West Indies went ahead in the first game in Auckland via the ‘Eliminator’. The teams will now face off in a five-ODI series, starting on December 31 in Queenstown, which Vettori felt would be a close contest as well.”We’ll be confident on our home patch but we know they’ve got some pretty destructive players led by [Chris] Gayle and [Ramnaresh] Sarwan and [Shivnarine] Chanderpaul,” he said. “If we can do our utmost to eliminate their contributions throughout the series I think that will give us a huge chance of winning.”

Denise Reid heads women's selection panel

Denise Reid, the former South African allrounder, has been appointed the new convenor of selectors for women’s cricket. Reid replaces Geraldine Smith, who headed the panel for two years. She takes charge just months before the Women’s World Cup gets underway in Australia in March.”I return to women’s cricket at a difficult time when we need to select a team that will represent South Africa at next year’s ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in Australia,” Reid said. “I need to sit down with my two fellow selectors to formulate a strategy on how we are going to take women’s cricket forward.”We have a number of young players who need to be blended in with the older players for them to gain experience at a higher level. We shall also be building on the experiences that they gained on the recent tour of England.”The other members of the panel include the national women’s team coach, Noor Rhode, and Northerns Cricket Union Women’s team coach, Khomotso ‘Volvo’ Masubelele. Their first task will be to pick a 22-member squad to attend a training camp at the High Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria from December 28-30.Reid, who represented Western Province, played one Test and 29 ODIs for South Africa between 1997 and 2002. She finished with 12 ODI wickets, with career-best bowling figures of 3 for 7, incidentally on debut, against Ireland in Dublin in 1997.

Maguire makes Liverpool and Edwards claim

Liverpool will likely find Michael Edwards’ replacement from within the club, according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire.

The Lowdown: Edwards set to leave Liverpool

While Jurgen Klopp has undoubtedly been the key reason for the Reds’ great success in recent years, Edwards has been hugely influential in his own right.

Liverpool’s sporting director has masterminded numerous top signings at the club, not to mention selling on surplus players for big fees.

It has been reported that Edwards is likely to leave his role at the end of the season, though, leaving a gaping void behind the scenes at the club.

The Latest: Maguire makes key claim

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire said he thinks Liverpool will find Edwards’ replacement from within Anfield, hailing the options at the club’s disposal. He said:

“Michael Edwards has been the invisible guiding hand under FSG’s stewardship.

“He’s done a brilliant job. He understands the business side of things and he understands the importance of identifying and keeping talent at the club.

“Somebody of his skill base is a rare gem to find. Liverpool have benefited significantly from his stewardship at the club.

“They are huge shoes to fill, but they’ve got phenomenal people there. If you are a good operator, you tend to surround yourself with good people.”

“You’d imagine they’d recruit from within because they have some very talented people at the club.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-2/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Liverpool must nail Edwards’ replacement

Given the brilliant job Edwards has done at Anfield, it is vital that the Reds take their time in picking his replacement in order to make the transition as seamless as possible.

The hope is that he will decide to stay put despite recent speculation, but failure to find a sufficient replacement if he does move on could end up being a fateful decision.

It may be that Edwards’ influence is only fully appreciated when he is gone, depending on how Liverpool deal with the situation.

WBA: Ismael drops Matt Clarke injury update

West Bromwich Albion manager Valerien Ismael has dropped an injury update on Matt Clarke.

What’s the latest?

Speaking after Albion’s win over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, the Frenchman revealed that he and his medical team will be assessing the extent of the centre-back’s hamstring injury, which the 24-year-old picked up when chasing a loose ball shortly before half-time in the fixture, in order to determine when the Brighton & Hove Albion loanee will return to action.

As cited by Birmingham Live, the 45-year-old said: “The only negative is the injury to Matty Clarke. I don’t know what’s going on, we need to assess him. We’ll see how bad the injury is.

“Yes, it’s really sad, but I hope it’s not too bad. The good thing is that we have the international break next week, so hopefully we get him back after the international break. This is my expectation, this is my hope.”

Fans will be gutted

Considering how impressive Clarke has been following his move to The Hawthorns earlier this summer, West Brom fans may be gutted to hear that the defender looks set to miss the Baggies’ Carabao Cup clash against Arsenal on Wednesday, as well as the Championship fixture with Peterborough United on Saturday.

Indeed, over his three league appearances for Albion thus far, the £2.7m-rated man has averaged 2.3 interceptions, one tackle and 2.7 clearances and has won a whopping 7.3 duels per game, with these returns earning the centre-back an average SofaScore match rating of 7.03.

Although the Carabao Cup is not likely to be a priority for Albion in a season in which they are chasing automatic promotion, and a trip to Peterborough unlikely to be the most difficult fixture of their Championship campaign, the absence of the £21k-per-week Clarke will still be felt by Ismael. The manager will certainly be hoping that the player who Brighton boss Graham Potter dubbed a “quality” talent will be ready for action shortly after the upcoming international break.

Spurs frontrunners to sign Zakaria

According to a report by Sport Bild, as translated and shared by Sport Witness, Tottenham Hotspur are among the ‘most promising candidates’ to sign Borussia Mönchengladbach midfield colossus Denis Zakaria.

The Lowdown: Paratici cooking…

It has been quite the busy summer for new managing director Fabio Paratici as he aims to oversee a major summer rebuild at Spurs.

The Italian has already orchestrated a plethora of outgoings and incomings at N17 and going by reports, he doesn’t seem to be quite done there as he attempts to strengthen Nuno Espirito Santo’s hand before 2020/2021.

Now, Sport Bild have some news of another new target for Tottenham.

The Latest: Spurs among favourites to sign Zakaria…

As per the German news outlet, Tottenham are among the favourites to sign Zakaria from Monchengladbach this summer and it is believed there is ‘no longer any doubt’ he will leave the Bundesliga side.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-gossip/” title=”Tottenham latest gossip!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Tottenham, Everton and Arsenal are named as the most promising candidates from the Premier League, whereas both Napoli and Roma are also attempting to lure him away from Borussia-Park.

Monchengladbach are also prepared to offer a 50 per cent discount on their midfielder, originally wanting €40 million (£33.8m) but will entertain bids of around €20m (£16.9m).

The Verdict: No brainer?

Potentially landing Zakaria for a fee even close to £16.9m should immediately send off alarms in Paratici’s head, even despite the player’s recent fitness issues.

Still young at 24-years-old, the Switzerland international is a technically gifted and composed presence in centre midfield – having averaged an impressive 88% pass accuracy over his minutes in the Bundesliga last season (WhoScored).

Out of all Tottenham regulars with at least 10 league starts, only Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg managed a better success rate, and we believe Zakaria could be an ideal player to compete with Oliver Skipp for a place in front of Spurs’ back four.

Lauded as ‘incredible’ and a ‘very complete footballer’ by ex-Monchengladbach boss Marco Rose (Sky Germany via Planet Football), signing the 6 foot 3 monster for a discount fee would be a brilliant move by Paratici.

Kurt Zouma would favour West Ham move

West Ham United have entered talks to sign Kurt Zouma, according to reports…

What’s the word?

Sky Sports claim that the 26-year-old centre-back would favour a move to the Hammers as he is settled in London. Chelsea have been mooted with using the France international in a player-plus-cash swap deal for Sevilla star Jules Kounde.

It’s believed the Irons would be prepared to pay around £20m to seal Zouma but that is below the Blues’ valuation, whilst he still has two years to run on his current £65k-per-week contract.

It remains to be seen how much Chelsea are looking for, with CIES Football Observatory currently rating him at €40m (£34m).

Fans will be buzzing

With David Moyes reportedly keen to bolster his defence with a high-quality centre-back, the link to Zouma should come as no surprise, even more so with the Hammers in need of replacing Fabian Balbuena’s place in the squad.

The Frenchman’s vast experience in the top-flight, having featured 165 times in the Premier League, makes him seem like a perfect candidate to add to Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson.

Zouma rated out as Chelsea’s second-best player during the 2020/21 season, earning a 7.07 grade on WhoScored.

He averaged a squad-high 3.6 aerial duels won and 3.8 clearances per game, whilst also managing a seasonal passing success rate of 90.9%, which suggests he’s not just a defensive animal but a player who is equally deft with the ball at his feet, which will suit Moyes’ out-from-the-back system to a tee.

Blues legend John Terry once described the 26-year-old as a “beast of a player” and it’s easy to see why on the above evidence.

Furthermore, much of the London Stadium faithful are very eager to see Moyes make a move for the Chelsea star this summer, with one fan claiming that he’s a “fantastic defender” on his day and another lauding it as a “steal”, amongst many more reactions.

The fact that Zouma would be open to a switch to East London will leave them absolutely buzzing. GSB must look to get this done.

AND in other news, Moyes given big West Ham transfer boost over £36m-rated “machine”, fans surely buzzing…

West Ham will hold Abraham talks

According to journalist Ekrem Konur, West Ham United have now ‘prioritised’ the signing of striker Tammy Abraham this summer and pencilled in a timeframe for crunch talks.

The Lowdown: Abraham on the agenda…

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to the Irons for quite some time, with reliable reports as far back as April detailing their interest (The Telegraph).

However, his £40 million valuation has always been an obstacle for the club and may remain one fatal caveat.

C&H outlined Manchester United ace Jesse Lingard as one of the main priorities for manager David Moyes, but as per Konur, attention has now seemingly shifted to Abraham.

The Latest: West Ham set for Abraham talks…

The journalist, writing on Twitter, has claimed that West Ham will prioritise landing Abraham from Chelsea this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-news/” title=”West Ham news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He also says that the Hammers ‘will hold talks’ for the forward ‘next week’ as they aim to potentially get around his lofty valuation with a new transfer plan.

According to Konur, West Ham want to sign Abraham ‘on loan with a buyout option’ rather than simply paying the permanent fee straight up.

The Verdict: Get it done…

West Ham would be right to prioritise the signing of Abraham this summer as the start of 2021/2022 looms dangerously close.

Moyes arguably needs to add a new striker to his ranks above all else if he has any hope of building upon the Irons’ incredible 20/21 season.

Michail Antonio’s injury record proved a concern last campaign and left West Ham very short of numbers going forward, with Abraham looking like a good solution.

Lauded as a ‘phenomenal’ player recently by former Premier League coach Alex McLeish (Football Insider), he has also bagged a fairly solid 21 goals in 37 Premier League starts over the last two campaigns in total (WhoScored), suggesting he could become quite prolific with more regular starts.
