Pundit claims Ake would want Spurs move

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, Dean Windass, who made 402 appearances during his career, has claimed that Nathan Ake would like to sign for Tottenham Hotspur as he is not good enough for Manchester City.

Ake was signed for £40 million last summer following Bournemouth’s relegation to the Championship, however, injuries have seen him sit on the sidelines for 105 days this season, with his big blow coming while on international duty.

The former Bournemouth defender has been handed more starts towards the end of the season as Pep Guardiola rested his star players for the Champions League, with Ake starting three of the last four Premier League matches.

Speaking on how Ake isn’t good enough for Man City and if he would think a move to Spurs would be good, Windass exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“I don’t think he’ll stay at City because I don’t think he’s good enough to play for them in my opinion but also, I can’t see him going back to Bournemouth.

“He’s an athlete, he looks easy on the eye as he’s good on the ball, a threat from set-pieces and he’s quick. So I think that would be a good fit and the alarm bells would start ringing for him if he knew Tottenham wanted to sign him. That would be a massive, massive club for him to go to.”

Ake has established himself as a quality Premier League centre back having made 155 appearances since making his debut for Chelsea during the 2012/13 season before he was sold to Bournemouth in 2017.

Pep Guardiola appears to have found his much-desired centre back partnership in John Stones and Ruben Dias who have helped City concede just 26 goals in the league all season.

Liverpool handed Jota relief

Liverpool will be able to call upon Diogo Jota this weekend despite initial fears that he may have been injured.

The Portuguese international reportedly missed training on Thursday, sparking worries that he could have been ruled out for the Reds’ Premier League clash with Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon.

However, Jurgen Klopp allayed any fears over the 24-year-old’s fitness, stating that he was “fine” in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.

Jota’s inclusion in the Liverpool squad will certainly be a huge boost for the Reds as they aim to close the gap on the top four in the final few games of the Premier League campaign.

Despite having suffered a three-month injury absence since his arrival from Molineux, the 24-year-old remains one of the most productive players at Anfield.

The Portuguese, who earns just over £90,000 per week with Liverpool, has hit 12 goals in all competitions so far in a red shirt.

For comparison, only Mo Salah and Sadio Mane have found the net with more regularity than Jota – a remarkable feat considering that he has only started 16 matches all season out of a possible 45.

It will be a huge relief for Klopp to be able to call on Jota and his goalscoring talents for today’s clash against Newcastle. The German has never attempted to hide his admiration for the Portuguese, labelling his performances as “class”.

Whilst Jota might have triggered some concerns by missing training on Thursday, that he is ready and available for this weekend’s match will be a huge boost to Liverpool and their chances of overcoming Newcastle and maintaining their top four push.

Daryl Dike could replace Calvert-Lewin

Dean Windass has exclusively told the Transfer Tavern that Barnsley striker Daryl Dike could replace Dominic Calvert-Lewin at Everton, should they lose him this summer.

Despite boasting the likes Richarlison and Josh King as well as the England striker, recent reports have suggested that the Toffees have been tracking the American sensation following his superb form for Barnsley since moving there in January.

Dike made the switch to the MLS from Orlando City on loan for the remainder of the season, and has impressed quite significantly at Oakwell, scoring seven goals in 13 outings, including a brace in their Easter Monday victory over Luton.

King’s Everton deal expires in the summer having only joined on a short-term deal from Bournemouth in January, but Windass believes that it’s more likely Dike, who’s also on Leeds’ radar, would come in to replace Calvert-Lewin.

Calvert-Lewin is enjoying by far the most prolific season of his Toffees career, and is already on a career-high 14 Premier goals despite scoring just three since Christmas.

Windass told the Transfer Tavern:

“He’s going well, and speaking to Mark Crossley, one of my ex-teammates, he said they’re very direct and play to the boy’s strengths.

“I can see him at Everton, I can’t see him at Leeds. I can only see it at Everton if Calvert-Lewin isn’t there. The boy from Barnsley, is it too big of a step at this present time? So Everton I can see, if Calvert-Lewin goes.”

It’s hard to imagine a situation where Calvert-Lewin leaves Everton this summer, but if the Toffees don’t renew King’s contract, then Dike would be a shrewd addition in that sense.

He’s hit the ground running in the Championship, and at just 20-years-old, is already looking quite some player.

Wolves made a mistake over Idrissa Gueye

There are very few superlatives in the dictionary that are appropriate when trying to analyse former Wolves target, Idrissa Gueye.Once of the Old Gold’s midland rivals, Aston Villa, Tim Sherwood described the combative midfielder as someone who “plays like a monster on the pitch.” That phrase now couldn’t be more true.Since his days in the Premier League, the Senegalese has taken his game to a new level and is now having a major say in PSG’s run to the Champions League semi-finals.That’s what makes Wolves’ decision not to sign him last summer all the more unfortunate.Reports from France claimed that Nuno Santo’s side wanted to land him last summer but a move for the £30m enforcer never materialised.Gueye was offered to other clubs by PSG in January but again, Wolves didn’t pounce. Evidently interested in the player, he could have transformed their midfield.Nuno has been keen to make his team a more attacking unit and with a player like him at the base of their midfield, it would have allowed them more freedom.Instead, the Portuguese manager is finding life difficult with the Molineux outfit lying 12th in the top-flight.Gueye is now a shining light in the Champions League and was one of the stand-out performers in both legs against current holders Bayern Munich.[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-news-and-views-lingard-leao-jimenez-mir” title= “Read the latest Wolves news and views!”]PSG knocked them out and it was Gueye who had a major say in that eventuality. After the first leg Get French Football News stated that he “covered brilliantly, intercepted better as the game went on.”The 31-year-old put in a midfield clinic during that first clash, achieving an 85% pass success rate, performing three dribbles and winning seven of his eight ground duels. He was equally as productive in the second leg, winning a colossal six tackles as he helped to break down a number of Bayern attacks. At full-time, Sky Sports journalist Ben Grounds took to Twitter to say: “Idrissa Gueye man of the match in the best Champions League tie for many, many years.”GFFN followed that up by writing about a failed loan move to Newcastle a matter of months ago, saying: “Fast-forward to the last 7 days & he has been completely indispensable for the club, phenomenal energy & intercepting play.”This was as complete a performance as they come from the midfielder. Gueye didn’t score or assist but that simply isn’t his game.As comparisons to N’Golo Kante showed when he was in the Premier League, he is a battling force embedded within a team to break up the play, not create. This would have been a magical addition for Wolves; Jeff Shi and Nuno must be full of regret.

AND in other news, Wolves could have their new Conor Coady in 18 y/o “leader” who’s been “outstanding”…

Gers fans react to Kudela footage

Glasgow Rangers fans have been reacting to a clip of Slavia Prague’s Ondrej Kudela leaving a Glasgow Hotel with the rest of his teammates.

The Czechia champions progressed to the Europa League quarter-finals after beating the Gers 2-0 at Ibrox. They should have been enjoying their success after the match, but instead they have found themselves in hot water over allegations of racism. According to Steven Gerrard and Glen Kamara, Kudela racially abused the Gers star towards the end of their match on Thursday (Sky Sports).

Slavia have since released a statement vehemently denying the allegations (slavia.cz). On Friday morning, Kudela and the rest of the Slavia squad left their hotel in Glasgow to return to their homeland. STV reporter Raman Bhardwaj was on the scene as they left and attempted to ask Kudela a series of questions, but he didn’t get an answer to any of them.

A clip of the interaction was shared on STV’s official Twitter account, and it attracted plenty of attention from the Rangers supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Why Man Utd must sign Branthwaite

According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United are one of several sides said to be hot on the heels of Everton’s £1.8m-rated centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite.

What’s the word?

Branthwaite, who is currently on loan at Blackburn Rovers, finds himself on the Red Devils’ radar after excelling in the Championship this season thus far.

The 18-year-old has caught the eye after impressing at Ewood Park and it is believed a number of other unnamed clubs have kept tabs on the young centre-back.

The Mail have claimed Solskjaer wants to fend off the stiff competition for Branthwaite’s signature. His contract at Goodison Park is set to expire in 2022.

Eventual successor to Harry Maguire?

Despite his age, Branthwaite has arguably led from the back during his loan spell at Blackburn, just like Harry Maguire did at Sheffield United, racking up seven appearances for the Rovers since joining the club in January.

Maguire has now established himself as an integral part of Solskjaer’s side, marshalling his troops from the heart of the defence – this season alone has seen him start and feature in every single Premier League fixture so far.

In the teenager, Solskjaer could find someone very similar to the 27-year-old, despite their obvious differences in age, especially when you consider just how well he has performed for Tony Mowbray’s side this season.

The England U19 international is averaging an impressive 2.7 tackles and 2.3 interceptions per game, which ranks him very favourably when you compare him to the club captain, who himself has only managed 0.8 tackles and 1.7 interceptions per 90 in the Premier League, via WhoScored.

In fact, only Aaron Wan-Bissaka has averaged more tackles per match with 3.1, while no other player can better his interception success rate.

But Ed Woodward may have his work cut out should he try to bring him to Old Trafford in the summer, as Carlo Ancelotti is reportedly a ‘big fan’ of the teenage prospect.

By getting him, however, he could land a player who has shown that he is fully capable of playing second-fiddle to the likes of Maguire and Victor Lindelof for a fraction of the price it would’ve cost to sign a player like Dayot Upamecano.

Should Leeds sign Ryan Christie?

When it comes to the January transfer window, it’s a period of the year that will give Victor Orta and Leeds nightmares.

Many a sleepless night has been followed by a hefty bang of Orta’s fist on the table. That’s because his success in the mid-season market has been far from triumphant.

Cast your minds back to January 2019 and you will recall the dumfounding saga revolving around Dan James. The Welshman was set to sign from Swansea and had even penned his contract at Elland Road.

Pictures had been taken of him holding up a Leeds shirt but in the final minutes of the window, Swansea failed to pick up the phone to ratify a deal. The transfer collapsed and then James went and signed for Manchester United the following summer.

Jean-Kevin Augustin then provided further evidence behind why Orta hasn’t quite got to grips with the January window. On paper, this was a superb piece of business. Leeds had brought a player with Bundesliga and Ligue 1 pedigree to the Championship.

However, Marcelo Bielsa wasn’t a fan of his work ethic and after various fitness issues he left the club having played just 48 league minutes.

As a result, the Whites failed to pay their obligation to buy after a rather horrendous error in the transfer market.

Unfortunately, if reports are to be believed this month, Leeds could be on the verge of another blunder. Earlier in January, it was revealed that the Whites were interested in signing Celtic winger Ryan Christie.

The Scot is a tremendous player technically and has contributed to 15 strikes this term – four goals and 11 assists. Based on that, he’d be a solid capture. However, the fact of the matter is that he’s in shambolic form.

Celtic have won just seven of their last 22 outings and Christie’s poor performances are a large part of that. In his last 16 games, the Scotland international has scored just once and he saved arguably his worst performance of the season for Celtic’s 2-2 draw with Livingston last weekend.

He surrendered possession on 17 occasions and completed just one cross. On top of that, Christie failed to complete a single dribble. With that in mind, he’d surely struggle to get in the side on Leeds’ right flank over Raphinha – a mazy dribbler with plenty of creative flair.

Christie has received plenty of flack for his performances in recent weeks too. Celtic pundit Colin Watt said last month: “The reason Christie annoys me so much is he’s just so inconsistent. There’s times where he’s shooting from 25-30 yards when there’s a better pass on.”

Indeed, the wide man has scored just three goals from 60 attempts at goal in the SPFL this term. That’s a woeful conversation rate of 5% – the worst in the Celtic side.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-latest-leeds-stories” title=”Read this week’s latest Leeds stories!”]

The last thing Leeds right now with three straight defeats is another inconsistent player. He’s also annoying fans considerably.

One supporter described it as the worst performance they’d ever seen in a Celtic jersey after the draw with Livi last week. Another sarcastically pleaded that a snowman could have done a better job.

Of course, it’s important to take the stats in more than fan opinion, but it doesn’t bode well for a potential move.

Like with Augustin a year ago, this could be yet another huge mistake from Orta in the transfer market. Unless Christie starts showing more consistency, this is a player Leeds need to forget about.

AND in other news, Leeds could find their new Roofe by signing £27k-p/w beast with a “love of scoring”…
