Sunderland may have finally solved their centre-back crisis

[ad_pod ]

Sunderland atoned for drawing their first two League One games by coming from behind to beat Portsmouth this weekend, and the performances of Alim Ozturk and Jordan Willis may just have solved an on-going problem.

On the chalkboard

After 20 minutes of Saturday’s clash against Pompey, the feeling of ‘here we go again’ was surely rumbling through the Stadium of Light, as the visitors took the lead and the hosts started off sluggish and lacking in quality.

It wasn’t long before Willis equalised though, and Chris Magiure added a second shortly before half-time.

A two-goal buffer would have certainly brought fans’ heart rates down, but the Black Cats survived in the end with a 2-1 win, and Willis and Ozturk proved they may be the answer to the riddle Ross has been trying to solve since he arrived last season.

About time

Ross’ side drew 19 of 46 games in his first campaign, and many of those were 1-1 draws. They just simply couldn’t hold on to one-goal leads.

The boss tried all sorts of centre-back combinations, with Ozturk, Glenn Loovens, Jack Baldwin, Jimmy Dunne, Tom Flanagan and even youngsters like Jack Bainbridge all getting some minutes at various points throughout the season.

With no settled partnership though, there was never a real sense of stability and calm in front of Jon McLaughlin, quite the opposite in fact.

On Saturday however, with a full 45 minutes after the break to play with the score at 2-1, Willis and Ozturk never looked out of control, panicked or under any real sort of pressure, and the fans appreciated it too.

Willis, who grabbed the goal, reads the game brilliantly and possesses excellent pace and ball-playing abilities. Alongside him, Ozturk is fearless, physical and has no qualms booting one into row Z if needs must.

The pair’s abilities complement each other, and after stumbling between various combinations at the back last term, Ross may finally have the settled and balanced partnership he needs to guide his side to success.

Man Utd ace Nemanja Matic throws the gauntlet down over title charge

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As quoted by Sky Sports, Nemanja Matic has insisted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must “bear the responsibility” if Manchester United don’t compete the Premier League this season.

What did he say?

The Red Devils endured a difficult campaign last season as they finished in sixth in the Premier League, and haven’t won the competition since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year in charge.

Despite this, Matic has revealed Solskjaer must look to contend for the title and it would be his responsibility were they to fail to do so.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said: “The coach must opt for the team that will fight for the title and if he does not win, he bears the responsibility. I have been in football for a long time, I have played almost all the games for all the clubs in the last 10 years. In order for me to play, one had to sit on the bench and accept that fact, and so do I now.”

An unnecessary statement

Did Matic really have to come out and say this? What exactly did he stand to gain from doing so? The Serbia international has essentially thrown down the gauntlet to Solskjaer in setting United a wholly unrealistic target for the season. Manchester City and Liverpool completely ran away with it last year, and any side, let alone the Red Devils, will struggle to make up the ground in just one campaign.

Matic’s words seem to have come from a place of bitterness. The 31-year-old has only played 22 minutes this season, and has seen both Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay solidify their places in the Red Devils’ midfield.

The former Chelsea star was also the subject of transfer speculation from elsewhere, so perhaps the comments were borne out of anger and frustration. Make no mistake about it however, the veteran midfielder has done himself, his manager and his teammates absolutely no favours by opening his mouth.

Aston Villa fans question Frederic Guilbert’s whereabouts after matchday absence

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa have suffered two defeats from two on their Premier League return and things aren’t going to get easier with Everton making the trip to Villa Park on Friday night.

The Toffees are currently unbeaten in their opening two games having won one against Watford and drawn the other to Crystal Palace.

Dean Smith signed 12 players over the summer for a total figure around the £144.5m mark and many have made their debuts already this season – including Bjorn Engels, Trezeguet, Douglas Luiz and club-record signing Wesley.

However, one of his first signings at the club back in January this year is yet to even make a competitive appearance in claret and blue.

Frederic Guilbert joined the club from Caen for £5m just a few months after Smith was appointed as Villa boss but was sent straight back on loan to the French side for the remainder of the season.

The 24-year-old impressed in pre-season on his return with summer arrival Matt Targett on the other side of defence – the pair kept two clean sheets and conceded just three goals in five matches.

Though neither player has yet started or even featured in a Premier League match this season.

The absence of Guilbert from the entire matchday squad on Saturday for their 2-1 home defeat against Bournemouth has raised question marks amongst some of the Villa fanbase.

A number of fans simply questioned where Guilbert was in response to a club update about another summer signing in Marvelous Nakamba.

One supporter claimed it’s key that the Frenchman is brought in on Friday, whilst another labelled his non-existence amongst the team as ‘bizarre’ considering the money they’ve spent, before stating that he has to start against Everton.

Celtic’s Lewis Morgan could benefit from Mikey Johnston injury blow

[ad_pod ]

Celtic winger Mikey Johnston will not feature in next week’s UEFA Champions League qualifying clash against FK Sarajevo, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

The 20 year-old, who scored the Hoops’ opening goal against the Bosnian champions on Tuesday night, had to be substituted off after picking up a knock, and Celtic manager Neil Lennon has confirmed he won’t feature in the second leg.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “Boli Bolingoli should be okay for Wednesday but Mikey Johnston will just miss out.”

It will now leave Lennon with something of a selection headache given Johnston was one of their most effective performers away from home, but he does have a number of options to fill in for the youngster.

Check out Keith from C’mon the Hoops’ fascinating video on the origins of the Old Firm derby below…

Lewis Morgan’s big chance?

To date, Lewis Morgan has made just one start for Celtic and that came back in October when Brendan Rodgers was still in charge.

That was all he could manage during his half-season at the club before moving on loan to Sunderland in January.

However, he’s been part of Lennon’s pre-season plans and was the player that came off the bench for Johnston on Tuesday night, ahead of established star Scott Sinclair.

An effective presence on both flanks during his 25 minute cameo, he was the player who provided the assist for the team’s third goal of the night in the 3-1 victory.

With Johnston confirmed to miss next week’s return leg, it could be a rare chance for the 22-year-old to start a game and impress his manager.

If he can dazzle in front of the home support then it’ll surely significantly boost his chances of more regular action in the months to come.

Celtic youngster Anthony Ralston will suffer if they sign Danny Simpson

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Neil Lennon is set to hand Danny Simpson the chance to impress at Celtic in a trial next week, according to The Scottish Sun.

What’s the story?

Simpson was released by Leicester City at the end of the last season and it’s now being reported that he’s set to have a chance of earning a deal at Parkhead. The 32-year-old wasn’t offered a new a deal by former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers at the Premier League club.

The right-back was a part of the Leicester side that won the league in 2016 but has since been replaced by Ricardo Pereira. The arrival of James Justin from Luton all but guarenteed Simpson wouldn’t be staying on at the King Power stadium.

Neil Lennon has made no secret of wanting more players in this summer, and has admitted: “Right-back is a priority, but we have a number of positions I’d like to strengthen like midfield and one or two attacking areas.

“I think we’ll have something in the next few days hopefully. It might be a right-back, it might be a left-winger, it might be a centre-forward.”

This sounds good for Simpson as he aims to earn a deal at a club that’s looking for a right-sided defender.

Is he an improvement?

While Lennon has admitted that right-back is a priority for this summer window, the Hoops do already have Anthony Ralston at the club. The 20-year-old has featured sparingly over the past 12 months.

The youngster had a successful loan spell at Championship outfit Dundee United the season before last, but hasn’t been able to establish himself at Parkhead since. It could be time for him to get more first-team opportunities now though, with Lennon admitting the right-back position is depleted.

At 20, he might not be ready for the big European games yet but he could be ready to act as deputy for a more experienced defender. Meanwhile, Simpson only played nine first-team games last year so would probably be best suited to an understudy role too.

Therefore, it looks like there would not be room for both players to act as the deputy to a more experienced signing, if one were to arrive after Lennon’s comments.

If Ralston can do as well, if not better, than Simpson during the Englishman’s trial then he simply has to get the nod. Bring in an experienced defender who will play 30+ games and allow Ralston to learn and develop under his wing.

Simpson is quite simply not that player. He barely turned out for Leicester last season and would simply block Ralston’s path to playing time.

Manchester United fans left fuming by Marcus Rashford’s reported contract demands

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United fans are not happy with reports that Marcus Rashford could be paid £350,000-a-week to stay at Old Trafford.

The Sun reported over the weekend that the striker is negotiating with the Red Devils as he enters the final year of his contract.

The paper reckon he is holding out for a four-year deal at that £350k weekly wage, in part because the signature of Alexis Sanchez has warped United’s wage structure.

Could United be in the hunt for an £85m blockbuster signing this summer? Check out the video below…

With interest from Spanish giants like Real Madrid and Barcelona in the background too, the club could have to relent in order to keep his services.

It’s an extraordinary sum, especially when you consider that his scoring record at United isn’t particularly strong since making the breakthrough into the first-team as a teenager.

Last term he scored ten Premier League goals, the first time he has reached double figures in a single season in the competition.

It’s fair to say that supporters aren’t exactly thrilled to hear of his demands, with plenty feeling he should be let go rather than retained at that price.

These fans have taken to Twitter over the weekend to share their thoughts…

West Ham’s Coventry could be their next midfield hope

[ad_pod ]

Conor Coventry could be the latest West Ham United academy graduate, perhaps destined to follow in the footsteps of Declan Rice.

The Republic of Ireland youth international is just 19 but it already showing all of the signs that he could make a first-team breakthrough sooner rather than later.

He is currently the captain of the club’s Under-23 team, having made 36 appearances for them, and has been capped at Under-17, Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level by his country.

Coventry has already made his senior debut for the club, playing in the 8-0 EFL Cup thumping of Macclesfield Town in 2018.

Pellegrini clearly trusts him and has given him a taste of life in the first-team, as he has been on the bench a total of four times in the Premier League.

An excellent defensive midfielder with the ability to move the ball well, while also boasting the stamina to go box-to-box, his talent has long been evident.

He made his debut in the Premier League Division 2 in 2015/16, when he was just 15.

Coventry is currently with Ireland’s U21 team in the Toulon Tournament and has helped them qualify for the semi-finals, coming on as a substitute in the recent 1-0 win over Bahrain.

There is perhaps a gap opening up too. West Ham only have Rice, Carlos Sanchez and Pedro Obiang to call upon in defensive midfield and bringing Coventry through makes sense. Rice, who Coventry will hope to emulate, is the only Premier League quality player in that trio.

He’s still a teenager, of course, and there is the likelihood that he could potentially be sent out on loan.

But promoting him to the first-team, where he can learn from Rice, now an England international, and Mark Noble, a fantastic servant to the club who is hero-worshipped by the fans, will give him the required ingredients to grow and improve as a player.

He is far from the finished article, of course, but his talents are there for all at the Irons to see.

If he is exposed to the first-team, he will be in the starting XI soon enough.

Southampton need to sell Guido Carrillo as soon as possible

[ad_pod ]

According to the Daily Echo, Southampton are hopeful of selling record signing Guido Carrillo this summer rather than sending him out on another loan spell.

What’s the deal, then?

The 28-year-old signed for the Saints in January 2018 for £19.1million from Monaco but failed to make any sort of impact as he failed to score in 10 appearances for the club.

In the summer of last year, he was subsequently sent on loan to Leganes where he also did not live up to expectations, scoring just five goals in 25 games for the Spanish side.

Despite his disappointing goal return, Leganes and former manager Mauricio Pellegrino want Carrillo back for next season on another loan deal as per the Daily Echo, but those at St Mary’s are hoping they can get some money back on the Argentine.

However, the report claims that the Saints are keen to recoup as much of their original investment as possible. With this summer representing their best chance of getting maximum value before Carrillo’s contract goes into its final two years, the suggestion appears to be that Southampton will wait for the right offer rather than simply getting the striker out the exit door.

Saints should get rid of Carrillo as soon as possible

Carrillo has to be considered one of the worst signings of recent Premier League campaigns.

Given the expectation that surrounds a player any time a club breaks their transfer record, it is a tremendous fall from grace especially when you consider he has not netted a single goal for Saints.

It is true that he was perhaps not given the time to bed into English football as he was only handed half a season to stamp his authority on the Premier League before being sent off to Spain.

But what he could have done to try and turn his fortunes around is perform well for Leganes and force himself into a starting place once he returns.

He didn’t manage to do that either given his goal return and the fact that he was a substitute for nine of his 32 La Liga appearances. As a result, the south coast outfit need to accept they got this one completely wrong, and move him on regardless of the loss they’ll almost certainly make on his original fee.

Southampton’s new man Moussa Djenepo divides opinion amongst fans in the video below…

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side need to get rid of a player who clearly doesn’t fit into the Austrian’s plans or high-pressing style, given he has already said he is looking to add speed to his attack via an interview with SportBild.

Even if it means taking a substantially reduced price from the extortionate fee that initially paid, it must be done this summer. As the Daily Echo report itself inadvertently insinuates, waiting around for a good offer only makes another loan move more likely.
