Murali to unveil mystery ball in Australia

BRISBANE, Oct 3 AAP – Controversial Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan plans to unveil a mystery ball when he makes his long-awaited return to Australia in December.

AAP03-Oct-2002BRISBANE, Oct 3 AAP – Controversial Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan plans to unveil a mystery ball when he makes his long-awaited return to Australia in December.Muralitharan says he has been working on an off-spinner’s version of the flipper ahead of the one-day international series against Australia and England.”I bowl it with my same action, a slightly flatter trajectory and it skids through faster than normal,” Muralitharan has told new Australian publication Cricket Week.”I’ve been trying it, but only in the nets so far. I want to be able to perfect it.”Muralitharan is looking to use the flipper before February’s World Cup in South Africa, adding to an arsenal which has netted 430 Test wickets and 297 one-day international wickets. The 30-year-old said he had always planned to return to Australia, where he was called for throwing by umpires on his last two tours.Indian spinner Bishen Bedi re-ignited the controversy of Muralitharan’s bowling action earlier this year when he said he looked “like a good javelin thrower”.And Australian vice-captain Adam Gilchrist added to it when he also admitted doubts over the bowler’s action when questioned at a Melbourne football function. But, having been cleared by the International Cricket Board, Muralitharan said it was a non-issue.”I have proved (to) the world that I am fair. It is all finished now,” Muralitharan said.”In my mind I am not doing any unfair things.”I am strong in mind and I fight for everything. I’ve had lots of work-outs. My success is not chance.”I’ve had so many problems and ups and downs. Even when I was down I’ve thought I have to do well and I’ve fought back from these moments.”For some reason they try to put you down. Ninety to 95 per cent don’t. It’s just the smallest percentages which do.”

Aston Villa eyeing Todd Cantwell

Aston Villa are now eyeing a move for Todd Cantwell, Emi Buendia’s former teammate at Norwich City, this summer.

What’s the story?

Reports from The Telegraph last summer suggested that Dean Smith’s side were weighing up a potential move for the Canaries midfielder, but a deal failed to materialise before the end of the window.

The same outlet has now claimed that Villa are continuing to monitor Cantwell ahead of a possible move, with the Midlands club having already sealed a deal for Buendia earlier this summer.

Imagine him and Buendia at Villa

Given how they both played together for a few years at Carrow Road, the prospect of seeing Cantwell line up alongside Buendia at Villa is a tantalising one, especially with the success they enjoyed – they helped Norwich to two promotions to the Premier League.

Described as someone with a “God-given” talent by his former youth team coach Gary Cockaday, the 23-year-old was one of the shining lights of a Norwich side which ultimately couldn’t avoid relegation from the Premier League in the 2019/20 campaign, scoring six goals and providing two assists in the division.

Last season saw him help lead the charge back to the top flight, bagging six goals and setting up another seven in the Championship, with the Canaries making their return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Former Norwich striker Dean Ashton raved about him, saying: “When I first saw him I said to Darren Huckerby, ‘how is that lad not training with the first-team?’. He was incredible. The way he was drifting past players. His speed of thought and his awareness. He’s just a wonderful player.”

Just like Jack Grealish, the 1.77m (5 foot 10) Cantwell has that ability to glide past players with his close control and skill, and it’s no surprise that his average of 1.6 dribbles per game in the Championship last season ranked him joint-top for the Canaries alongside Buendia.

With the 23-year-old labelled an “exceptional” talent by Chris Sutton, Cantwell and Buendia could rekindle their partnership at Villa Park this summer.

Meanwhile, Villa are closing in on this big-money signing…

Pundit says Juventus’ Aaron Ramsey would start for West Ham

Dean Windass thinks that Aaron Ramsey would walk into West Ham’s team.

The Welsh midfielder, who has 40 Premier League goals to his name, is currently playing his football with Juventus in Italy but has struggled to make an impact since leaving Arsenal two years ago.

Ramsey has managed just six goals and as many assists in 65 appearances for the Old Lady and is being strongly linked with a stunning return to the Premier League this summer.

However, whilst the 30-year-old could be back in London after the European Championships, a move to east rather than north of the capital might be on the cards.

That’s because reports believe that the former Gunners midfielder’s agent has received offers from both Everton and West Ham as he looks to get his career back on track following his tricky two-year spell in Italy.

But Ramsey is currently giving a timely reminder of his capabilities having scored Wales’ opener in their key victory over Turkey in the Euro’s which helped them secure second place.

Windass said his goals make him a rare breed in modern day football. Asked whether he walk into the current West Ham team, he exclusively told Football FanCast:

“Yeah. If he has a good Euros because he’s on trial now. He will know he’s on trial, and Premier League teams will be watching him.

“Has he gone to Italy because it’s easy and a slow pace? I would sign Aaron Ramsey because you don’t get many midfield players that get you goals, and he gives you that.”

Rangers dealt Ryan Gauld blow

Rangers’ hopes of signing Ryan Gauld this summer have taken a blow after it was revealed that SC Farense have triggered an extension to his contract, meaning that Steven Gerrard will no longer be able to bring him to Ibrox on a free transfer.

The former Dundee United man has been linked with a move to Rangers in recent weeks and it had seemed as if he would be available on a free transfer, as his contract was set to expire in the summer.

However, Portuguese news outlet O Jogo have now revealed that Farense have taken up their option of extending his contract by another year and will only let him go for €4m (£3.5m) this summer.

It is no surprise that the Lions of Faro are keen to receive a fee for the 25-year-old, although they will perhaps be resigned to seeing him leave following their relegation from the Portuguese top flight, especially with a number of Premier League and Championship clubs also reportedly showing an interest.

Despite his price tag, which would likely make him the third-most-expensive signing of the Gerrard era at Rangers behind Ryan Kent and Kemar Roofe, his performances in recent seasons certainly suggest that this would be a deal worth doing for Ross Wilson this summer.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

Farenese’s former manager Sergio Vieira was full of praise for Gauld last season, saying: “He has given us fantastic individual quality, played most of every 90 minutes and has been crucial in contributing with assists and goals.

“He’s a great player, technically very developed and, with the ball at his feet, capable of realising actions that only the best players do.”

Gauld contributed an impressive nine goals and seven assists in 33 league appearances this season and has averaged a solid 7.19 rating from WhoScored, which certainly suggests that he could be a stellar addition to Gerrard’s side ahead of their return to the Champions League next season.

Therefore, despite this setback, Wilson should definitely act quickly if he wants to bring Gauld to Ibrox this summer.

Sunderland dealt double injury blow

Sunderland have been dealt a double injury blow ahead of their upcoming play-off semi-final clash on Saturday.

What’s the latest?

Speaking prior to the second leg of the Black Cats’ League One play-off semi-final against Lincoln City, Lee Johnson confirmed that both Denver Hume and Conor McLaughlin would be unavailable for selection due to injury.

Left-back Hume was withdrawn because of an issue with his hamstring just 10 minutes into the first leg of the tie and will not recover in time for today, while right-back McLaughlin has a stress fracture of the back which has ruled him out for the remainder of the season.

As cited by Chronicle Live, Johnson said: “Denver has a hamstring injury. It’s disappointing, and it’s happened on too many occasions to different players this season. And Conor is out for the season with a stress fracture of the back.”

Huge blow

Despite Johnson only taking over at Sunderland late last year, the 39-year-old has already had to deal with a quite extraordinary amount of injuries during his relatively short time at the club.

A large portion of these setbacks have occurred to the Black Cats’ defenders, such as the loss of centre-back Dion Sanderson, who returned to Wolves after being ruled out for the rest of the season, and fellow centre-back Jordan Willis, who looks set to be sidelined for 12 months because of a recurring knee injury.

As such, the news that both Hume and McLaughlin are now also unavailable for the visit of Lincoln on Saturday is likely to come as a devastating blow for the former Bristol City manager, particularly as his side are aiming to overturn a 2-0 defeat from the first leg of the play-off semi-final tie.

Rob Lee hails Dawson’s impact

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who made 18 appearances for West Ham, has hailed the impact Craig Dawson has had on the team since he joined on-loan from Watford.

Dawson was handed another chance in the Premier League by David Moyes after being relegated with Watford last season and despite not starting any of the Hammers’ first 11 league matches, the 31-year old has proved to be a shrewd piece of business.

The Hammers have already agreed to sign Dawson permanently when his loan deal expires in the summer, with West Ham having to pay just £2 million for the centre back.

Speaking on how good Dawson has been this season for West Ham and how it was a no brainer to sign him permanently, Lee exclusively told FFC:

“He’s been unbelievable and you’ve got to look at his performances over the season because, for £2 million, it was a no-brainer as he’s performed magnificently.

“Since Declan Rice has been out injured they’ve found it tough though, so don’t underestimate what he does for the defence.”

Dawson has plenty of Premier League experience, having played for both West Brom and Watford before his current season challenging for Europe with West Ham.

Moyes has opted for a back three for the majority of this season, which allows defenders like Dawson, who might lack a yard of pace, to still perform at the top level.
