Everton: Shearer lauds Mykolenko

Former England striker Alan Shearer took to social media to laud Everton full-back Vitaliy Mykolenko for his ‘stunning’ strike against Leicester City this afternoon.

The lowdown: Dream start for Everton

The Toffees made the perfect start to their crucial match at the King Power Stadium  as Frank Lampard’s side look to get themselves out of the Premier League relegation zone.

With just six minutes on the clock, following some last-ditch defending from Yerry Mina, Alex Iwobi picked out Mykolenko on the edge of the penalty area before the Ukrainian full-back crashed a powerful volley beyond the reach of Kasper Schmeichel.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The visitors  couldn’t hold onto their goal advantage for long as Patson Daka levelled the score soon after before Mason Holgate restored the lead…

The latest: Shearer impressed by Mykolenko goal

Taking to Twitter in the immediate aftermath of Mykoelnko’s early goal, the all-time Premier League top scorer Shearer hailed the 22-year-old’s effort.

The Newcastle legend gushed: “Wow. What a stunning a strike from #Mykolenko for his first @premierleague goal #LEIEVE”

In fact, this was the 21-cap defender’s first direct goal involvement for Lampard’s team, having signed from Dynamo Kyiv in January.

The verdict: Mykolenko has done well

Even though Daka quickly cancelled out that early goal, the joy on Mykolenko’s face and indeed the pandemonium in the away end at the King Power was a pleasure to behold for Evertonians.

Since coming to Goodison Park for a reported £17m (BBC), the young full-back has endured the hardship of witnessing his homeland facing an invasion from Russia.

All credit should go to Mykolenko for being able to focus on the Everton cause, posting some decent performances so far and carving out a regular spot in Lampard’s first XI, and indeed coming up with such a special moment in a match of this magnitude.

Ganguly, Dravid shown the door, Kohli stays on

Virat Kohli is the surprise retention for his team for the next three seasons, while Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir have been released by their respective franchises

Nitin Sundar08-Dec-2010

While the retention of MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar was along expected lines, there were some other surprising calls made by the franchises•Indian Premier League

Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir are among the big names released by their IPL franchises, along with Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle and Andrew Symonds, while Virat Kohli is the surprise retention for his team for the next three seasons. Wednesday was the deadline for the franchises to name the players they would retain from their current squads and while there is no common thread running through the choices of players retained and released, the key factors seem to be form, brand appeal and age.Kolkata Knight Riders, Deccan Chargers and Kings XI Punjab have decided not to retain any of their players, while all the other IPL franchises have held back at least one current player. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, the 2010 finalists, have retained the maximum of four players each, in the process parting with half of the $9 million salary cap available to teams.According to the auction rules for IPL 4, teams can retain up to four players, only three of whom can be Indians. The retained players – who must have been part of the franchise’s registered squads for the 2010 season – will be valued at $1.8 million for the first player, $1.3 million for the second, $900,000 for the third and $500,000 for the fourth.Mumbai, as expected, held on to Sachin Tendulkar, the highest run-scorer of the 2010 season, offspinner Harbhajan Singh, West Indies allrounder Kieron Pollard and Sri Lanka seamer Lasith Malinga. Chennai took the Indian trio of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and M Vijay out of the auction, in addition to South African allrounder Albie Morkel, their regular opening bowler. Delhi Daredevils retained only Virender Sehwag, meaning Gambhir – their captain for the last two seasons – is in the auction pool. The retained players

Mumbai: Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga
Chennai: MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, M Vijay, Albie Morkel
Rajasthan: Shane Warne, Shane Watson
Delhi: Virender Sehwag
Bangalore: Virat Kohli

The most interesting choice came from Royal Challengers Bangalore whose sole retention is Virat Kohli, currently on an impressive run in ODIs. There is no place for Dravid, their icon player, nor for Anil Kumble, their captain and the head of the state association. Kolkata’s decision to drop Sourav Ganguly, the biggest cricketing name to emerge from the city and the face of the franchise’s on-field persona, is a bold step.Punjab’s decision to release all their players was expected following their dismal 2010 season, which means Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Yuvraj Singh will go under the hammer.Siddhartha Mallya, owner of the Bangalore franchise, said the decision to retain just one player was backed by financial logic. “You must realise that with retention, a big chunk of your budget gets taken away,” Mallya told ESPNcricinfo. ” Mumbai and Chennai have kept four players, which means that half their budget is gone. It finally comes down to how much money one was going to lose. We have a big balance sheet but we have lost $1.8 million for keeping one player. We still have about $7-odd million left but if we had retained four then we would have had to buy virtually an entire squad with the remaining half.”Age is not a universal disqualification. It didn’t count in Tendulkar’s case, nor in that of Shane Warne, Rajasthan’s coach and captain, who was retained by Rajasthan Royals, along with Shane Watson, a day ahead of the deadline. One franchise official explained the difference: “Warne is a global brand so that only helps to promote the franchise.”If Rajasthan opted for Warne because they have always viewed the IPL as a global brand, Mumbai went with Tendulkar and Harbhajan for their popularity. Pollard and Malinga may have made the cut on account of being impact players, who have backed up their strong Twenty20 credentials with consistent performance.Sehwag’s match-winning abilities, coupled with his rapid emergence as a brand, clearly had a say in Delhi’s decision to retain him. MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina must have been shoo-ins for Chennai following their compelling IPL and international form. Vijay’s performances, coupled with his potential to attract a strong local fan-base, must have tilted the scales in his favour, while Morkel’s proven all-round skills were always going to be an asset. If there is a stranger in this crowd, it could be Kohli. Despite his owners trumpeting his recent performances, Kohli is still work in progress. But he is young, ambitious and has the youth appeal – all qualities of the UB Group’s target audience.

Celtic: Ange must brutally axe Rogic

With Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side having been unceremoniously dumped out of Europe by Bodo/Glimt last week – an outcome that was partly due to the 56-year-old Bhoys boss fielding a weakened side in the second leg of the tie – the Greek-Australian manager would undoubtedly have been hoping for a dominant performance and result in Sunday’s Premiership fixture against Hibernian in response.

However, after requiring a late Giorgos Giakoumakis winner against bottom of the table Dundee FC last weekend, the Hoops once again struggled to refind the form that saw them comfortably dismantle Rangers at the beginning of the month against Hibs, with the fixture at Easter Road ending 0-0.

Indeed, rather than looking refreshed after being handed a rest against Bodo/Glimt, the vast majority of Celtic’s starters turned in tired performances against Shaun Maloney’s outfit, with Daizen Maeda, Liel Abada and Tom Rogic all having afternoons to forget in Edinburgh.

Although, it will undoubtedly be the latter of this trio most disappointed with his display on Sunday, as the Australia international once again failed to offer his side anything in the middle of the park.

Postecoglou must axe Rogic

Despite having arguably been one of Postecoglou’s most impressive performers in the first half of the season, Rogic has seen his form rather dramatically fall off in recent weeks – averaging a well below-par SofaScore match rating of just 6.47 over his three appearances prior to the Hibs clash.

And, after once again being handed a start ahead of Matt O’Riley in one of the two more advanced roles in Celtic’s three-man midfield, Rogic failed to prove he was deserving of his starting berth in the Bhoys XI over his 58 minutes on the pitch on Sunday.

Indeed, the £1.35m-rated midfielder enjoyed just 28 touches of the ball – the second-lowest of any of Celtic’s starting outfielders – completed a mere 10 of his 15 attempted passes, failed to find his man with his two attempted long balls and his one attempted cross, lost five of his nine duels and gave away possession on 11 separate occasions – meaning he lost the ball with every 2.5 touches he had.

These returns saw the £21.5k-per-week Aussie earn an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.5, while The Celtic Way awarded the midfielder a five in their own player ratings, as well as stating of the 29-year-old’s display:

“The Aussie has looked out of sorts recently and was relatively quiet in the opening 45 and he also copped a booking more out of frustration than anything else with a mistimed challenge. He was given just 12 minutes of the second half before he made way for O’Riley.”

As such, considering just how poor the player who David Turnbull claimed is “up there with the best” has been in recent weeks, Postecoglou simply must axe Rogic from his starting XI against St. Mirren this Wednesday, as a repeat performance of his Bodo/Glimt and Hibs displays could well cost the Bhoys dearly in what is an extremely tight Premiership title race.

Newcastle eye Leandro Trossard move

Newcastle United are now targeting Brighton winger Leandro Trossard, according to The Daily Mail’s Simon Jones.

The lowdown

The Belgium international, who joined Brighton from Genk in the summer of 2019 for £15m, is five games short of a century of appearances in the Premier League.

In his 95 top-flight outings to date, he has scored 15 goals and provide nine assists. He is a regular for Graham Potter’s side, starting 27 of their 31 Premier League matches so far in 2021/22.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Valued at £15.3m by Transfermarkt, the 27-year-old is out of contract in just over 14 months’ time.

The latest

Jones wrote in The Daily Mail that Newcastle are expected to sell Allan Saint-Maximin this summer and reinvest the funds in a replacement winger.

Trossard is one of the players they have identified as a potential successor to the Frenchman, with extensive scouting reports currently being compiled.

Encouragingly for Newcastle, the Belgian is apparently keen to leave the Amex Stadium come the end of the season.

The verdict

Trossard would be a good successor to Saint-Maximin at Newcastle.

His tally of five goals this season may not be spectacular, but it’s worth stressing that Brighton are a low-scoring team. Indeed, only Burnley and Norwich City have netted fewer goals the Seagulls in the Premier League this term.

Furthermore, it matches the tally of Saint-Maximin at St James’ Park.

Newcastle know first-hand how good the 27-year-old can be after his man-of-the-match display in the 1-1 draw between the two teams at the Amex Stadium in November.

In addition to converting a penalty (which he won himself), Trossard created three chances, completed four out of five long passes and drew four fouls, earning him a SofaScore rating of 8.2/10.

He’s also won praise from Newcastle great Alan Shearer, who said that the ‘magnificent’ Albion winger boasts an ‘excellent’ all-round game.

If he’s good enough for Shearer, that’s a fairly strong endorsement in our book.

Liverpool still keen on Ismaila Sarr move

Liverpool remain interested in signing long-time target Ismaila Sarr in the summer transfer window, according to a latest transfer rumour.

The Lowdown: Sarr linked in the past

The Senegalese forward famously scored twice for Watford against the Reds back in 2019/20, ending their hopes of going unbeaten for a whole Premier League season.

Sarr remains at the Hornets currently but he hasn’t always been a regular this season due to injuries, making 15 league starts and scoring five goals in that time.

Liverpool have been linked with a move for the winger numerous times in the past and it appears as though their interest isn’t going away.

The Latest: New rumour emerges

According to Corriere dello Sport and Telelombardia [via Sport Witness], the Reds are seen as a ‘dangerous competitor’ in the race to sign the 24-year-old this summer.

He is also ‘a favourite’ of AC Milan’s but Liverpool are providing ‘competition’ for his signature, ahead of a likely exit at the end of the season.

The Verdict: Possible replacement for superstar

Liverpool are in a situation where they have five superb attacking options currently, so it is hard to imagine Jurgen Klopp needing any reinforcements in that area.

That being said, there is a chance that one of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane or Roberto Firmino could leave this summer, which would then open up a space in the squad.

If so, Sarr would be an exciting option to come in, having scored nine goals in 39 caps for Senegal and been hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Garth Crooks, bringing the same pace and directness out wide as his mentor Mane.

Fraser endorses Finn for Ashes

Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s director of cricket, has backed his county colleague Steven Finn to live up to the hype and expectation that his impressive home Test debut against Bangladesh has generated

Andrew Miller01-Jun-2010Angus Fraser, Middlesex’s director of cricket, has backed his county colleague Steven Finn to live up to the hype and expectation that his impressive home Test debut against Bangladesh has generated. Though he cautions against expecting too much too soon, Fraser does not believe that Finn would be overawed at the prospect of leading the attack in Australia this winter.Finn was the outstanding player in the recently concluded first Test, in which used his height and accuracy to claim match figures of 9 for 187, including a second-innings haul of 5 for 87, his first five-wicket haul in any first-class match at Lord’s. His uncomplicated method has led to inevitable comparisons with Fraser’s own career, which was also launched on the true surfaces of Lord’s, and which culminated in 177 wickets at 27.32 in 46 Test appearances.”Steven has been very complimentary about me in the last few weeks, but where he’s at is all down to himself,” Fraser told Cricinfo’s Switch Hit podcast. “He’s got a bit extra on me in a couple of areas – he’s a bit taller and a bit quicker – but if he combines that with a bit of accuracy and some perseverance, he’s going to have a long successful career ahead of him, because as you saw in the Bangladesh game, he’s a very capable young man.”As Bangladesh demonstrated in their attritional batting displays, wickets can be hard to come by on a Lord’s surface that rarely assists the bowlers, except in overcast conditions. But as Fraser recalled from his own playing days, it is surfaces such as these – and the deathly-flat decks that Finn encountered on debut in Bangladesh in March – that can turn promising young bowlers into the finished article.”When I was young, playing at Lord’s, and playing on good pitches in general, really helped, because you’ve got to learn to be disciplined,” he said. “If you’re not, you can leak too many runs. Sometimes you can kid yourself that you’re bowling better than you are, on pitches that are nipping and seaming around everywhere, and then you get to a higher level and play on flat ones and you get exposed.”He’s had to develop that discipline to be successful, and it ingrains the skills you require to exploit pitches that are helpful,” Fraser added, having watched Finn carve Worcestershire apart in a 14-wicket haul on a juiced-up New Road track in April. “He played exceptionally well in that match, and that showed what he can do when conditions are in his favour. Bangladesh are not the strongest team in the world, but he’s shown he can be effective on pitches that aren’t offering assistance.”Finn’s performance was impressive not merely for the wickets that he collected but the level-headedness that accompanied them. In the aftermath of the contest, for instance, he acknowledged the fact that that he had conceded too many boundaries – a total of 24 in 49 overs. “One of his strengths is his self-analysis,” said Fraser. “He sets himself high standards, and he wants to be better than he is each day. He can walk off having taken 9 for 37, but still thinking about a couple of poor balls that he bowled, rather than the nine wickets that he took.”If we’re being honest, there have been games for Middlesex this season where he’s bowled better [than at Lord’s],” added Fraser. “If you want to give him a bit of criticism, he pushed the ball in a bit, whereas this year he’s shaped the ball away from the right-handers a little bit, and he conceded maybe four an over, which is something he’s not keen on.”On the subject of the Ashes, which seems destined to remain the hot topic of the summer, Fraser was happy to endorse Finn’s credentials. Although he guarded against the comparisons with Glenn McGrath and Curtly Ambrose that have already come Finn’s way, Fraser did not believe that such a high-profile campaign would prove too much too soon for a 21-year-old in his first full season of international cricket.”We’re expecting a lot from someone at a very early age, but he is a very capable young man,” said Fraser. “By Brisbane, he might have played eight Tests, so his Test career will be well on its way. Playing there would be another step forward in his progress towards being an international bowler, because he’s got assets that are worth sticking to. When he does get it right he can be a real handful, and he’s got the potential to be a fine bowler.”I do think you can get carried away,” he added. “Names like McGrath and Ambrose are being bandied around, but they are all-time greats who took their Test wickets at under 22. England have not had many bowlers in the last 20 years who’ve taken their wickets at under 27 or 28. He knows and we know at Middlesex that he’s young and he’s going to have the odd bad day and bad game, because youngsters do that. But he’s his own man, and he’ll bowl in his own way, and I think everyone at Middlesex has taken a huge amount of pride at Steven’s progress.”

Leeds considering 3rd Brenden Aaronson bid

Leeds United correspondent Graham Smyth has revealed that the Whites are ‘considering’ a third bid for key transfer target Brenden Aaronson.

The Lowdown: Two offers so far

Aaronson, who was described as a ‘half-winger’ by Joe Donnohue, is the club’s top winter target and holds a Transfermarkt valuation of £10.8m.

However, it seems as if Leeds will need to pay more than double that figure following unsuccessful offers of £15m and £20m respectively.

The American was coy when asked about a possible move to Elland Road, and it seems as if Victor Orta hasn’t given up hope of forcing through a late transfer.

The Latest: Smyth’s claim

Smyth took to Twitter on Wednesday, sharing a link to a ‘transfer state of play’ piece from The Yorkshire Evening Post.

He revealed that the Whites were ‘considering’ a third offer for Aaronson, while also addressing a possible exit for Crysencio Summerville amid links of a move to Hamburg.

The Verdict: Orta harming himself?

As Smyth mentions, should Leeds go in with a third offer for Aaronson and fail, that could be the starting point when it comes to a summer fee.

Therefore, a third bid could be a gamble, but with Marcelo Bielsa not having an attacking midfielder at the club, it could be worth the risk.

We’ve seen previously that anything can happen in the final days of the transfer window with Raphinha’s move to Yorkshire in October 2020, but at this moment in time, Orta could actually be increasing Aaronson’s price tag in the summer with another offer.
