Malik wants to bat up the order for Pakistan

Shoaib Malik, the 31-year old Pakistan allrounder, believes he has another “five or six years” of cricket left in him. Malik, who was dropped from the national squad after the Champions Trophy, also wants to bat up the order instead of No 6 or 7, where he’s been used of late.”Representing your country is the biggest thing (and) of course I want to play for my team (Pakistan), I want to do well for my country,” Malik said. “I still think I can play for another five or six years. I am fit but I want to see myself consistent. I do not want to bat at No 6 anymore. I want to bat at No 3 or 4.”Malik averages 39.02 in 51 ODI innings batting at Nos 1 to 3. At positions 4 to 7, his average comes down to 31.16 from 128 innings.Malik last played Test cricket in 2010 but was part of Pakistan’s limited-overs units until the Champions Trophy earlier this year, after which he has been ignored for the tours of West Indies and Zimbabwe. He admitted that injuries and poor form had contributed to his decline, but said he had now regained his strength. “I was struggling with my shoulder and my elbow but I have had surgery for my elbow and I have worked hard in the gym every day (since being dropped). Now I am absolutely fine. I can even bowl 30 overs in one day. I am very happy and I want to play as an all-rounder. That is my priority.”Malik is currently playing in the Caribbean Premier League, where he is the second-leading run-getter in the tournament with 223 runs from seven innings at a strike-rate of 114.94. Malik’s side Barbados Tridents will face Jamaica Tallawahs in the second semi-final in Port-of-Spain on Friday. “It (CPL) is so far, so good (for me). I have played some good innings, (I have been) bowling also. I want my team to be in the final and win this CPL.”He said that Barbados captain Kieron Pollard’s faith in him as an all-rounder, since they spoke at the Champions Trophy, had boosted him. “When someone gives you that confidence it is always good,” Malik said, revealing that Pollard encouraged him to bowl as much as possible and extend his all-rounder aspirations.

A dominating hundred from Rob Quiney steered Victoria to an eight-wicket win against England Lions in the first tour match in Melbourne. Chasing 226, Victoria cruised to victory with nearly 14 overs to spare, helped by 16 fours and three sixes from Quiney.Victoria were given a strong start by the openers, Quiney and Chris Rogers, who put together 96 off 68 balls before Rogers fell for 23. Peter Handscomb joined Quiney and the two forged a 125-run partnership in 24.2 overs, almost taking their side to victory. Quiney was the harshest on the bowlers, making 122 off 104 and taking the match away from the tourists. He was dismissed with Victoria just five short of the win but Handscomb’s half-century had also done the damage. Craig Overton, who took 2 for 30, was the only Lions bowlers to go at less than six runs an over. After being put in to bat, the Lions were given a steady start by their openers Varun Chopra and James Vince (43). But Scott Boland struck twice in the 16th over, removing Chopra and James Taylor with the score on 68, and dismissed Ben Foakes for another duck two overs later. Fawad Ahmed joined in and took two wickets, leaving them at 74 for 5.Gary Ballance and Rikki Clarke salvaged the innings from there with a 70-run stand before Clarke was caught behind off the part-time bowling of David Hussey for a patient 25. A flurry of fours and sixes towards the end from Ballance helped the Lions add 33 runs off the last three overs to reach 225 but that target proved some way short in the face of Quiney’s aggression.

PCB bars Kaneria from all cricket till result of appeal

Danish Kaneria, the Pakistan legspinner, has been barred from playing any official cricket in Pakistan pending the outcome of his appeal against a lifetime ban handed by the ECB last month for corruption. The decision was taken after a meeting of the Pakistan board’s integrity committee on Monday.Kaneria, Pakistan’s fourth-highest wicket-taker in Tests, was handed the life ban by an ECB disciplinary panel hearing the spot-fixing case involving former Essex fast bowler Mervyn Westfield. Kaneria had been found guilty of inducing Westfield to under-perform and of bringing the game into disrepute. He has indicated that he would contest the verdict, though he is yet to formally lodge an appeal. The PCB’s integrity committee, headed by board chairman Zaka Ashraf, said that any final decision on Kaneria would be taken only after the appeal was dealt with. Kaneria had already been barred from playing for the Pakistan national side in 2010, and the PCB has said that it would in principle stand by the sanctions imposed by the England board. So far, he had been allowed to participate in Pakistan domestic cricket, and he was among the highest wicket-takers in last season’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the first-class tournament. He represented Habib Bank Limited, who have written a letter to the PCB asking for clarity on his cricketing status. HBL are set to suspend ties with Kaneria, and are waiting for a formal response from the PCB before taking a call on his job status. Kaneria’s last domestic match was a Twenty20 for Karachi Zebras in March.Although his punishment was handed out by the ECB, the ICC’s anti-corruption code states that decisions based on a domestic board’s regulations should be upheld by boards around the world, including the PCB.

Mumbai Indians add five uncapped players

Mumbai Indians have added five uncapped players to their squad for the 2012 IPL, including Jharkhand medium pacer Rahul Shukla, Mumbai (Ranji) batsman Sushant Marathe, Vidarbha batsman Apoorv Wankhade, Mumbai allrounder Sujit Nayak and Uttar Pradesh Under-19 allrounder Kuldeep Yadav.Shukla returns to Mumbai Indians after being part of the squad for IPL 2010, while the other four have been picked up by the franchise for the first time. Shukla, 21, has taken seven wickets at 15.71 from four Twenty20 games, with an economy rate of 7.17.At 26, Marathe is the oldest of the five and was part of the Kochi Tuskers squad in 2011. He topped the batting averages for Mumbai during the qualifying stage of India’s domestic Twenty20 tournament last October, averaging 69.66 with a strike-rate of 148.09 from four games while opening the batting.Wankhade was the second-highest run-getter for Vidarbha in the CK Nayudu Under-22 tournament, scoring 466 runs at an average of 51.77 in six games. A statement from Mumbai Indians said the 19-year old “had impressed with his batting technique, ability to score big and quick runs and as an agile fielder.”The 22-year-old Nayak has represented Mumbai in the CK Nayudu tournament for three years and can bowl left-arm spin as well. Yadav also bowls left-arm spin and at 18, is the youngest of the five. In the semi-final of the Cooch Behar trophy, Yadav made a half-century and took six wickets against Mumbai.Mumbai Indians have been one of the busier IPL teams in the offseason. They added Dinesh Karthik and Pragyan Ojha in the transfer window before buying Herschelle Gibbs, Mitchell Johnson, Robin Peterson, RP Singh and Thisara Perera in the IPL auction earlier this month.

de Villiers not out to avenge World Cup defeat

The truth about sport is that it is played as much in the mind as it is on the field. For South Africa’s cricket team it is sometimes played entirely in the mind. During their tour of New Zealand, South Africa will not only face a test of skill but also one of temperament, against an opponent known for shrewdness, particularly at mind games.”There’s always a little bit of this and that when we play New Zealand, especially the last time we met in the World Cup,” AB de Villiers, South Africa’s ODI and Twenty20 captain, said on arrival in Wellington. “They won that game and we have a lot to prove in this series. I’m sure the game will be played very hard on the field but we are friends with most of the guys off the field.”In that World Cup quarter-final in Mirpur, New Zealand exerted tremendous pressure on South Africa, who were chasing a target of 222. There was a flashpoint after AB de Villiers was run out and several New Zealand players exchanged words with the other batsman Faf du Plessis. South Africa’s chase unraveled and they collapsed for 172, when they had been 108 for 2 at one stage.de Villiers said South Africa had “moved on” from that defeat and that this tour was not a revenge mission. “Obviously it hurt but we have new goals now and a lot to look forward to. We are a new unit with fresh faces. We play a different kind of cricket to what we have in the last few years. Mentally, we will have to be tested to see how strong we are.”Gary Kirsten, who became South Africa’s coach only after the World Cup, preferred to focus on the cricket and not on verbal duels. “I don’t think we are going to think too much about what New Zealand are doing. If we play really good cricket in terms of our skills and don’t say anything, we will win more games than we will lose,” Kirsten said. “If New Zealand feel that they want to get verbal with us, that’s their business. The side that plays better cricket is going to win.”Both South Africa and New Zealand have momentum going into the series. South Africa beat Sri Lanka at home, and New Zealand just thrashed Zimbabwe in all formats. Despite the quality of New Zealand’s opposition, de Villiers said they made a strong statement of intent. “I won’t say it gave them a false sense of confidence because they really played well,” de Villiers said. “But still, I’d like to say we are a better unit than Zimbabwe. We should be more competitive and we are going to go out there to win games.”Since de Villiers became the limited-overs captain, South Africa have been more aggressive and creative than before. “I like to try things. I like to be attacking. I am really enjoying it so far but I have only captained five games, so a lot to learn,” de Villiers said. “I enjoy playing around with bowlers, with field placings as well. I like to stay one step ahead of the batters, to try and think what they are thinking about. I also like to think what I would find uncomfortable at the wicket, but it doesn’t always pay off.”New Zealand is the first of three overseas tours for South Africa and a 3-0 victory in the Tests will earn them the No. 1 ranking. Kirsten said the management team had worked with the players to contextualise the New Zealand series. “We’ve got long-term plans and this is just another tour which is part of the process,” he said. “We believe we have to put performances together in different parts of the world and this is an important tour for us in terms of what we want to achieve in the long term.”The tour comprises three T20s, three ODIs and three Tests. They start their visit with a T20 against Christchurch as part of the Earthquake Relief Campaign on Wednesday. The first international T20 is in Wellington on February 17.

Tendulkar likely to play in Australia ODIs

Sachin Tendulkar is likely to return India’s ODI set-up for the tri-series in Australia, which begins on February 5 and also involves Sri Lanka

N Hunter14-Jan-2012Sachin Tendulkar is likely to return India’s ODI set-up for the tri-series in Australia, which begins on February 5 and also involves Sri Lanka. The selectors will meet in Chennai on Sunday to pick the squad for the series and, reportedly, Tendulkar has made himself available for selection.India won the tri-series on their last trip to Australia in 2007-08 and Tendulkar had been India’s best batsman then, scoring a vital century in the first of the three finals in Sydney. He last played an ODI on April 2, the World Cup final in Mumbai that India won. He is currently India’s top run-getter in the ongoing Test series against Australia.Tendulkar’s comeback would offset the absence of Yuvraj Singh, who is still convalescing from a non-malignat lung tumour.Seamer Praveen Kumar, who was originally picked for the Test-leg of the Australia tour but was later withdrawn after he picked up a rib injury, is another player on the way back into the national squad. Praveen was India’s leading wicket-taker during the Tests in England last year, but an ankle injury ruled him out of the one-dayers. Praveen had played two limited-overs practice matches in Bangalore on Thursday and Friday, to prove his fitness.Irfan Pathan, who was picked for the final two matches of the home ODI series against West Indies in December, could find a berth in the squad as a second allrounder. Ishant Sharma, in all probability will not play the series. While he has been an integral part of India’s Test set-up, he only played two ODIs – when India fielded a young team during the tour of the West Indies – in 2011. Previous to that, he had last played international 50-overs cricket in August 2010, and has more often than not struggled in the format. Zaheer Khan is likely to stay on for the ODIs, with R Vinay Kumar and Umesh Yadav completing the pace department. In the spin department, the selectors are happy with the pair of offspinner R Ashwin and legspinner Rahul Sharma. Harbhajan Singh, who is recovering from shin injury owing to which he could only play three Ranji Trophy matches for Punjab this season, is once again likely to be ignored.Parthiv Patel, has been India’s preferred reserve wicketkeeper in ODIs for a while, but his batting has been questioned after he has repeatedly failed to convert starts. In the series against West Indies, he managed only 56 runs from five matches. The selectors could be tempted to try Wriddhiman Saha, who has usually been preferred for the Test legs of tours, in place of Parthiv.Saha’s Bengal team-mate Manoj Tiwary, who scored his maiden ODI century in the final match of the West Indies series and had a strong Ranji season, could be involved in a tussle with Ajinkya Rahane, if the selectors opt for an extra batsman. In addition to picking the tri-series squad, the selectors will also decide on names for the two Twenty20 internationals against Australia, which will be played ahead of the one-dayers.Squad (likely): MS Dhoni (capt/wk), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Manoj Tiwary/Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, Rahul Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha/Parthiv Patel (reserve wk), Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma/Irfan Pathan, Praveen Kumar, Vinay Kumar, Umesh Yadav
