Grêmio: Vanderlei; Victor Ferraz, David Braz, Kannemann e Cortez; Lucas Silva, Maicon, Alisson, Patrick e Everton; Luciano. Técnico: Renato Gaúcho.

Taylor not certain for Abu Dhabi Test

New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor has said he is not a certain starter for the first Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi, beginning on November 9, because of a right calf strain. Taylor sustained the injury on September 23 and exacerbated it when he began running again, forcing him to miss the ODI series against South Africa at home, which New Zealand lost 0-2.”I feel okay but on Tuesday I was running at 75-80%. It’s a little bit strange travelling on a tour when you’re not 100% and hoping to get the other 20% when you’re away,” Taylor told . ”I’ve been able to bat over the last two weeks and felt it a couple of times but nothing major. It’s probably going to be a push to play that warm-up game [on Monday], and see how they [medical staff] think it’s going and whether it’s good enough to play that first Test.”New Zealand have departed for the UAE and they begin their tour with a three-day game against Pakistan A in Sharjah, from November 3. Without Taylor and Kane Williamson, who was also injured, New Zealand struggled against South Africa and they are likely to be tested further in conditions that are vastly different to those at home. Taylor said his preparation for the series against Pakistan, who rely heavily on spin, was not ideal.”I haven’t hit as many balls as I would like,” Taylor said. ”Over the next little while I’m trying to cram it in. I haven’t faced a lot of spin lately; there’s not too many spinners going around in New Zealand in the nets. I guess experience and the mental side of the game will come into it a bit more. It’s a tough tour and it’s probably not ideal preparation for me; I only watched the last day of the Test [Pakistan v Australia] and it was spinning sideways.”

Briggs turns screw on Derbyshire

Hampshire’s slow left-armer Danny Briggs claimed four wickets to leave Division Two’s bottom side Derbyshire in trouble at the Ageas Bowl. They finished the second day on 166 for 7, still 222 runs behind and, with no recognised batsmen left, facing an uphill struggle. The visitors had done a good job of polishing off the leaders’ innings in the morning as once Michael Bates was removed having made his half-century, Mark Footitt finished off the tail. With only 56 added to the overnight total Derbyshire at least had some momentum but the loss of Paul Borrington to Briggs just before lunch curtailed their progress. Sean Ervine had Wayne Madsen caught at slip and bad light forced an early tea with Stephen Moore still unbeaten on 48.Upon the resumption, the 23-year-old Briggs was back in the action, trapping Marcus North lbw but Kyle Abbott’s removal of Moore for 53 in similar fashion dealt the real blow.At 101 for 4, Derbyshire were in trouble but Scott Elstone and Alex Hughes fought back with a partnership of 59, which was eventually broken when Ervine took another good catch at slip to give Briggs his third victim.Gareth Cross fell cheaply to Abbott before the Briggs-Elstone combination accounted for Hughes to leave Derbyshire still needing 73 runs to avoid the follow on. Briggs closed with 4 for 29 off 22 overs with his sights set on eclipsing his career-best figures of 6 for 45.

Warner and Clarke flay England

Domineering hundreds by Michael Clarke and David Warner, a declaration with an impregnable position swiftly achieved and two England wickets in the final hour: things could not have gone much better for Australia

The Report by David Hopps23-Nov-2013

Jarrod Kimber’s Ashes Report: Australia couldn’t be further ahead

Domineering hundreds by Michael Clarke and David Warner, a declaration with an impregnable position swiftly achieved and two England wickets in the final hour: things could not have gone much better for Australia as they pressed for the victory that would put them 1-0 up in the Ashes series.Australia stacked up a lead of 560 before declaring with slightly more than an hour remaining on the third day and they made excellent use of the 15 overs they reserved for a bowl against a weary and demoralised England side as Michael Carberry and Jonathan Trott both perished. That life could not be going more swimmingly for Australia was apparent when Carberry played on against Ryan Harris, his attempted block spinning off a thick inside edge between his legs. Trott’s difficulties against the pace of Mitchell Johnson also persisted: fortunate to survive on 7, when a miscued hook fell safely, he fell for 9 when he flicked Johnson off his hips straight to Nathan Lyon, stationed 20 yards in from the square leg boards. Against Johnson, he looks unbalanced both physically and mentally. It could have been worse for England as Alastair Cook dived desperately for the crease to avoid being run out for nought as Kevin Pietersen undertook a characteristically chancy single to get off the mark.Australia could not have envisaged such a dominant position when they were six down for 132 on the first day. No side has made more than 418 in the fourth innings to win a Test, a feat achieved by West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 2003. With two days remaining, they are perfectly placed to achieve the win to back up their confident pre-series chat.To draw, England would have to bat for more overs than in any Test in their history, the Timeless Test in Durban in 1939 apart. To win, they would have to break records by a huge margin. There was a storm in Brisbane a few hours after play, but the daytime forecast on Sunday was just for an occasional heavy shower.Their captain is also restored to full operational efficiency. Clarke fell for 113 from only 130 deliveries shortly before tea, his dismissal caused by perhaps his only ungainly moment as he came down the pitch to Graeme Swann and was bowled as he was drawn into an ugly leg-side slog. His 25th Test hundred, and his fifth at the Gabba, was one of his most heartfelt, coming as it did in the wake of a first-innings dismissal which encouraged a debate over whether his back ailment was causing him problems against short-pitched bowling. He survived a none-too-torrid examination against the short ball before restating his quality with an innings of polished, unfettered strokeplay.Warner’s 124 from 154 balls was equally brisk. He was just as assertive as Clarke, his footwork surely as crisp as it ever has been in his Test career as he attacked England’s limited attack with verve and selectivity. He brought up his hundred with runs off Joe Root, but unlike last summer, on this occasion he only punched the air.His most dismissive moment – planting Stuart Broad straight for six – was followed in the same over by his downfall. His dismissal, caught at the wicket, had an element of one-day cricket about it but it was a rare blemish by Warner, who has rarely played a more measured Test innings.Michael Clarke made his 25th Test hundred and his sixth against England to ram home the advantage•Getty Images

England’s aggressive tactics against Clarke, not short of initial verbals, even extended to allowing Warner singles to get him back on strike – quite an insult for a world-class batsman with a Test average the top side of 50 and an excellent record at the Gabba. During his innings, he joined Ricky Ponting and Greg Chappell as the only batsmen to have made more than 1000 Test runs at the ground and his average there hovers around 100. Rarely has such an accomplished batsman been tactically manoeuvred on to strike in such a fashion.Clarke had decided to take on the pull shot from the outset and he did so with equanimity. England soon abandoned the policy – only Broad looked capable of enforcing it anyway – and they were unable to make much of an impression on a pitch that remained in excellent order for batsmen.Broad never quite revved up the short-ball challenge to maximum, James Anderson, whose approach in any case tends to be more cerebral, did not get much of a look at him, and Chris Tremlett, for all his impressive build, trundled along at barely 130kph. Australia’s markedly enterprising approach to Swann’s offspin, encouraged by their head coach, Darren Lehmann, has also put England’s four-strong attack under strain. His first three overs after lunch, in two spells, cost 38, England’s sense of control destroyed. Swann needs to find an answer – and on Australian pitches he will not find it easy.England took two wickets in the morning session as Australia, 65 for 0 overnight, resumed with a lead of 224. Chris Rogers made a hash of Broad’s morning loosener, recognising the gift of a short and wide delivery but only managing to punt it to point where Carberry accepted a simple catch. Shane Watson also made little impact, making 6 in 27 balls before an attempted pull malfunctioned against Tremlett.England’s desperation was evident in the last over before lunch when they reviewed Swann’s lbw appeal against Warner only for replays to confirm that he had played the ball with his bat and the review was little better than wishful thinking. A second review against Bailey late in the afternoon session failed marginally. There was further frustration for England when for the second time in the match they were timed out as they discussed whether to review. This tougher approach seems set for the series as the umpires, refreshingly, implement the regulations.Clarke was the last of three Australia wickets to fall in an afternoon session which brought Australia 154 runs at a rate of nearly five runs an over. Steven Smith fell for 0 when Tremlett, finding bounce and away seam, summoned one of England’s best deliveries of the day. George Bailey, on Test debut, was dropped on 17 at short leg by Ian Bell, off the offspin of Joe Root, but he did not make best use of his reprieve as Swann floated a ball past his defensive push to strike off stump.Australia hastened to a declaration after tea in freewheeling fashion, adding a further 102 at a run a ball as Brad Haddin and Johnson hit about them to the delight of a jubilant Brisbane crowd. Australia’s long unbeaten record at the Gabba looks set to continue in the most emphatic fashion.

Binny finds form in draw

With a draw the most likely conclusion on the fourth day at Chinnaswamy Stadium, hosts Karnataka utilised the time available for some batting practice

The Report by Rachna Shetty in Bangalore17-Nov-2013
ScorecardFile pic: Stuart Binny hit his seventh first-class hundred after Karnataka conceded the first-innings lead•Sivaraman KittaWith a draw the most likely conclusion on the fourth day at Chinnaswamy Stadium, hosts Karnataka utilised the time available for some batting practice against Gujarat. They finished the day at 245 for 4, boosted by Stuart Binny’s seventh first-class hundred, after dismissing Gujarat for 411 in the first session. The draw gives Gujarat three points based on a first-innings lead while Karnataka get one.Abhimanyu Mithun had an impressive morning session and was instrumental in ensuring that the Gujarat resistance lasted less than 20 overs. Mithun dismissed Rakesh Dhurv and last man, Jasprit Bumrah, while the remaining two wickets were taken by Mayank Agarwal, to restrict Gujarat to 411 with a lead of 105.The rest of the day belonged to Binny, who was promoted up the order to No. 4 after Manish Pandey’s injury. After scores of 2 and 4 in the lead-up to this innings, Binny was keen to get some runs, particularly as Karnataka prepare for three successive away games.Karnataka were 23 for 2 in the 10th over after Agarwal and Kunal Kapoor were dismissed cheaply but their next 100 runs came off 115 balls as Binny got into the groove straightaway, attacking the Gujarat spinners and pacers alike and forcing them to change their attacking lengths to defensive ones.At the other end, KL Rahul grew in confidence, hitting out against Akshar Patel and Jasprit Bumrah, but the young opener would be disappointed on missing out on a bigger score after getting yet another start as he was dismissed by Rakesh Dhurv for 47.His exit hardly affected Binny, who brought out the reverse-sweep to have the sparse crowd hooting in appreciation. By the time Binny reached his century, off 88 balls, Karnataka had only scored 184. He was dismissed playing in the manner in which he had started, attempting a big shot, but by then, Karnataka had played long enough to ensure a draw.Wicketkeeper CM Gautam and Ganesh Satish played out the remaining overs safely until play was called off.Binny was pleased that he had made use of an opportunity given by the team management to find some form. He also said that the spinners’ lines early on allowed him to settle quickly.”I have a pretty simple game plan,” Binny said. “I try and play 20 minutes to see what is happening, in terms of conditions, and then I play my game. The pitch was good to bat on and the spinners tried to attack me early on, which helped me attack them in turn. I won’t say I was worried that I didn’t get enough runs but it’s always good to start your Ranji Trophy with a few runs. I don’t think I played more than 10 balls in the two innings before this one, and therefore it’s crucial for me to play out the first 20 minutes.”With three away games against Vidarbha, Odisha and Haryana up next, Binny said the team would be focused on first securing a first-innings lead before attempting an outright victory. Manish Pandey is expected to recover from a twisted ankle in time for the next round on November 21 and with Robin Uthappa also expected to be join the squad, Karnataka are confident of their chances.”At the moment, we haven’t got the results we have wanted,” Binny said. “We shouldn’t try and think too much about where we are on the table because it’s still too early in the tournament. First we will try to get an innings-lead and then try for an all-out victory.”Gujarat, who are comfortable in the second place with 13 points, are scheduled to play an away game against Punjab on November 21.
