Tanvir becomes a Twenty20 Bushranger

Victoria have secured the services of Pakistani allrounder Sohail Tanvir for this summer’s Twenty20 domestic tournament

Cricinfo staff09-Dec-2009Victoria have secured the services of Pakistani allrounder Sohail Tanvir for this summer’s Twenty20 domestic tournament. Tanvir, who last year turned out for South Australia in the event, has recently recovered from a back injury that has severely disrupted his 2009 season.Tanvir’s unorthodox, wrong-footed bowling action has proven successful in Twenty20 tournaments the world over. Tanvir, a left-armer, was among Pakistan’s leading players at the inaugural World Twenty20 tournament in South Africa, and topped the wicket-taking list in the first Indian Premier League while representing the Rajasthan Royals.Victoria have been searching for a second overseas player since Muttiah Muralitharan’s withdrawal to play for Sri Lanka in matches against Bangladesh. Tanvir will join the West Indies allrounder Dwayne Bravo on the Bushrangers’ books this season.Tanvir has endured a difficult 2009 season, not least on account of the back injury that led to him losing his regular place in Pakistan’s limited-overs line-up. He was turned away at London’s Heathrow airport for not obtaining the appropriate visa after being offered a contract by Surrey, and will be unable to play in the 2010 IPL, after Lalit Modi announced Pakistan players would not be invited to participate.Meanwhile, New South Wales are in talks with at least one member of the current West Indian touring squad for the Twenty20 tournament. The reigning Champions League victors last year recruited New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum for the final in controversial circumstances, and are understood to have set their sights on an allrounder.

Oriol Romeu to Barcelona, Cristiano Ronaldo to Al-Nassr, Julien Faubert to Real Madrid & the strangest transfer signings in football history

With Oriol Romeu having just rejoined Barcelona, GOAL runs through the most bizarre deals in football history

The transfer market is a wild and crazy place. It rarely fails to surprise. Time and time again, a player will enrage one club's supporters by joining their most hated rivals.

But we've arguably grown accustomed to such betrayals in an era in which money makes the football world go around. There's also a twisted logic to such transfers. At the end of the day, we're usually talking about top players moving between top clubs. It's not strange.

Sometimes, though, there are deals that seemingly come out of nowhere, involving players and clubs that are just downright bizarre. You know, the ones that leave you scratching your head and wondering, 'How on earth did that happen?!'

Here at GOAL, we'd argue that Oril Romeu's return to Barcelona after a bang-average career is one such transfer, but there are many, many more…

    Bebe: Vitoria – Manchester United

Bebe had only just joined Vitoria de Guimaraes from Estrela on a free transfer and had yet to even make a competitive appearance for the Primeira Liga club when Manchester United acquired the 20-year-old for approximately £7.2 million ($9.4m) in August 2010.

It was a truly baffling deal, not least because Red Devils boss Alex Ferguson had never even seen the forward play, admitting that he sanctioned the signing solely on the advice of former assistant manager Carlos Queiroz.

There was even a Portuguese police investigation into the transfer, after it emerged that Jorge Mendes, who became Bebe's agent just days before the move, pocketed Mendes 40 per cent (£2.9m/$3.8m) of the fee, though no charges were pressed against anyone involved.

The only certainty surrounding a mysterious move was that Bebe was nowhere near good enough for United and he left Old Trafford in 2014 for Benfica, after three loan moves and just two Premier League appearances.

    Kevin-Prince Boateng: Sassuolo – Barcelona

Following the sale of Munir El Haddadi to Sevilla in January 2019, it was clear that Barcelona needed another attacker. It was also widely known that the Catalans didn't have much money to spend.

In that context, it was hardly surprising that Barca decided to bring in a replacement on loan. What was shocking, though, was that they went for Kevin-Prince Boateng, with a view to a permanent transfer for €8m (£7m/$9m) in the summer.

Then 31, the former AC Milan forward had been plying his trade at Sassuolo when he received the most unexpected of calls from Camp Nou.

In fairness, Boateng had impressed as a 'false 9' during the first half of the 2018-19 campaign but nobody was in the least bit surprised when he returned to Italy at the end of the season, joining Fiorentina after failing to score once in just four outings for Barca.

    Andy Carroll: Newcastle – Liverpool

"I wasn't ready to leave," Andy Carroll has admitted. "It came as a shock. Newcastle was my club. I was 22. I could never get a grip at Liverpool."

Indeed, Carroll didn't even know who his new team-mates would be, revealing that he had to Google Liverpool's squad on the helicopter ride down to Merseyside.

Injuries consistently ruined the striker's hopes of striking up a real understanding with Luis Suarez and Co. but the unavoidable truth is that £35m proved a huge waste of money for Carroll, who hit just six Premier League goals in three years at Anfield.

Sol Campbell: Free agent – Notts County

Sol Campbell learned the hard way that if something seems to good to be true, it probably is. The centre-back couldn't believe his luck when, in 2009, he was offered the most lucrative contract of his career (£40,000 per week) to join League Two side Notts County.

Director of Football Sven-Goran Eriksson had played a major role in convincing Campbell that the club's owners had sufficient funds to take the oldest club in football into the Premier League.

However, Campbell realised after one game that they didn't even have the money to pay his wages, so he departed, with early reports claiming that he was not in good enough shape to play for County.

In truth, though, the former England international was disgusted with himself, later revealing that he had been "a mug" to have believed everything he had been told by Eriksson, executive chairman Peter Trembling and Munto Finance, a Middle Eastern consortium owned by Qadbak Investments, had told him.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has made a stunning impact since moving to the United States as a free agent. He has already inspired Inter Miami to Leagues Cup glory – scoring 10 goals in seven appearances – while also seeing them into the final of the U.S. Open Cup.

It has been a hectic few weeks for Messi, who was snapped up by Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham, with the 36-year-old being asked to produce moments of magic every few days. There is only so long he can handle such a schedule, with his workload needing to be managed carefully.

WHAT THEY SAID

Inter Miami boss Tata Martino has admitted as much, with the Argentine hinting at handing his fellow countryman a much-needed break over the coming weeks. He has said: “You have to take into account the large number of games that we played in 45, 50 days … Leo and many other players are reaching an important physical limit and from today we will start to evaluate this – how do I face at least the next three games.”

Neymar IN, but does Cristiano Ronaldo make our Real Madrid vs PSG combined XI?

Edinson Cavani failed to make our combined XI ahead of the Champions League tie, but which players have made the cut?

GettyKEYLOR NAVAS | GKIn truth there is not a great deal of choice here, with PSG and Madrid both likely to attempt to upgrade their goalkeepers at the end of the season. Manchester United's David de Gea is a long-term Madrid target for good reason – Keylor Navas is not quite good enough for an elite club. But Alphonse Areola is no better, with the 24-year-old yet to be capped by France at senior level despite dislodging Kevin Trapp as PSG's number one this season. Navas, therefore, gets the nod, but this is a clear point of weakness for both sides that could be exploited during the two legs.AdvertisementDANI ALVES | RBThere is much stronger competition in the first of our four defensive spots, with Dani Carvajal and Dani Alves among the best right-backs in world football. Carvajal has been short of his best this season, though, like many of his Madrid team-mates, while his campaign has been disrupted by concerns over a heart condition. He is also suspended for the first leg, with Achraf Hakimi or Nacho set to deputise. Alves is a three-time Champions League winner and it is no wonder Pep Guardiola wanted to take him to Manchester City, as his huge personality is a massive boost in the dressing room. For that reason, and his combination with compatriot Neymar, Alves is our pick at right-back. He will certainly be up for facing Barcelona's arch rivals.Getty ImagesMARCELO | LBMarcelo is another Madrid star who has failed to hit the heights expected of him in a stuttering campaign for Zinedine Zidane's men, but there is no doubting his quality and he offers a more consistent attacking threat from the back than PSG counterpart Layvin Kurzawa. The French full-back is capable of brilliance – witness his stunning volley against Lyon in Ligue 1 last month or his Champions League hat-trick versus Anderlecht for proof – but his season has descended into a scrap with Yuri Berchiche to be Unai Emery's first choice. The Brazilian flavour continues – Marcelo is our choice.ENJOYED THIS STORY?

GettyTHIAGO SILVA | CBThiago Silva has struggled with injuries but on his day the Brazilian remains one of the best out-and-out defenders in the game. Shastri calls for winning starts from India

India team director Ravi Shastri has urged India to start off series with wins instead of playing catch-up after early losses

Alagappan Muthu23-Feb-2016There is theatre in a counterattack and India have played the protagonist for a while now. They went down to Australia in the five-match ODI series but came back with T20I wins to square the eight-match limited-overs tour. Against Sri Lanka at home, they lost the first match before wrapping up a 2-1 scoreline and another trophy. Team director Ravi Shastri, however, has had enough of that. He prefers India buck up and begins series with wins as well.”We don’t want to always come from behind. Sometimes we want to start also well. So hopefully we’ll be looking to do that in this tournament,” he told reporters in Fatullah where the Indian team trained ahead of the opening match of the Asia Cup’s main round. “Like I said, every game from now is important before the World Cup. Yes, we are playing the Asia Cup but the momentum is good so it’s important to keep that momentum going.”Shastri has been the man the BCCI have turned to to help the Indian team come back from unfavourable results. He was appointed the team’s cricket manager in 2007 in the wake of a first-round exit at the World Cup. His current and rolling post of team director was created in August 2014 as a response to India’s poor form on overseas tours. A few winning starts and the ability to build on them can be the best outcome for Shastri and the team going into a World T20 at home.India’s first challenge in the Asia Cup will come from the Bangladesh, who were near unstoppable during the last meeting between the two teams. Mustafizur Rahman claimed five wickets on ODI debut and then six more in the next game to spearhead a 2-1 victory. Shastri, however, appears quite comfortable a repeat of that will not happen.”That was eight months ago, I’ve already forgotten about it,” he said. “There’s been plenty of cricket since. Ask about what’s been going on in the last two months. Anything before that, I don’t have in my memory.”Shastri is more than aware of the hosts’ threat though, after a breakout 2015 when they reached their first World Cup quarter-final and secured maiden series wins over Pakistan, India and South Africa. “I’ve seen cricket in Bangladesh grow, I’ve come here right through the 90s as a broadcaster. I’m happy to see the way cricket has developed and I’m happy to see the Bangladesh has evolved as a team. No team can take them lightly as they showed last year playing one-day cricket and tribute to them. So they have the respect of every opposition and India will be no different.”

Maharashtra steady after Tamil Nadu make 549

Maharashtra replied in solid fashion after Tamil Nadu amassed 549 in their first innings on the third day at Eden Gardens. Swapnil Gugale and Chirag Khurana steadied the proceedings with an unbroken 90-run stand after losing Harshad Khadiwale in the sixth over. Runs came at a fair clip – in contrast to Tamil Nadu’s relatively slow batting – with Maharashtra scoring at 3.43 per over.Tamil Nadu found wickets just as elusive as their counterparts did on the first two days, but their lower order made handsome contributions to take the score well past 500.After Anupam Sanklecha struck twice to remove overnight batsmen B Indrajith, who exited in the fifth over of the day, and R Prasanna, the score read 444 for 7. Malolan Rangarajan , then, added 57 runs in the company of Aswin Crist, and after his departure, put on 37 runs with Balaji. None of Maharashtra’s frontline bowlers conceded more than three an over.Tamil Nadu captain Abhinav Mukund admitted his team hadn’t bowled as well as they would have liked. “We gave away more loose balls than in the last game,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “I gave attacking fields to the bowlers, and you are bound to go for runs if you attack a lot, and their batsmen played well, too.”Most of Maharashtra’s batsmen are stroke-makers, and if we keep pegging away in the first couple of hours tomorrow, we can pick up a few wickets. The pitch looked quite flat today, but there is bound to be some wear and tear, and it will hopefully get slower. It’s going to be an interesting game.”Gugale, for his part, said Maharashtra had a “simple plan” for tomorrow, that of losing no more than two or three wickets in the day, and scoring 270-odd runs. “There is no scope of an outright result in this game. The wicket is favourable to batsmen, but is slower and lower. It’s very humid, and we fielded for almost eight sessions. t’s a big total, so it’s dicey to tell exactly what we will need to do. We managed to not lose many wickets today, and we will continue to try and do the same tomorrow.”

Clarke would play under captain Smith

Michael Clarke has said he would be prepared to play on under Steven Smith’s captaincy if the selectors decided to hand the job to Smith on a full-time basis

Michael Clarke has said he would be prepared to play on under Steven Smith’s captaincy if the selectors decided to hand the job to Smith on a full-time basis. Clarke remains Australia’s Test and ODI captain but Smith led the side in the final three Tests against India this summer and scored a century in every match, securing Australia the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Smith also led Australia to victory in a one-day game against England in Hobart when the stand-in ODI skipper George Bailey was suspended, and again scored a century. Clarke is expected to take back the captaincy whenever he makes his comeback after hamstring surgery, but he told radio on Monday that he would play under Smith if the selectors went that way.”Most definitely I would,” Clarke said. “I feel for Smitty, because I sat in his shoes when a lot of the media were trying to call for Ricky Ponting to retire. It’s certainly not personal between Smitty and I, we’ve been friends for a long time and will continue to be. The people that sit above both him and I will make their decisions.”Whatever they feel is the best 11 players, they’ll pick that 11. Whoever they feel is the best captain for the team, then they’ll pick that. If my time is over as a player – or as a captain – then, you know, the game moves on. I still think I have a lot to offer the team, I still feel like I can perform and help us have success, but that’s out of my hands. The most important thing for me is to get fit and healthy.”A Clarke-Smith handover would not be dissimilar to the situation that took place when Clarke was appointed captain in 2011 and Ponting played on in the Test side under Clarke. However, Ponting was 36 when that change took place; Clarke is only 33, but his ongoing back and hamstring injuries have left significant doubt as to how much cricket he will play in the future.Last week, Clarke had said that he hoped to remain as captain for the rest of his career, if the selectors considered him the right man for the job. At the time, he said: “I think I’ve earned that respect, I think I’ve played some really good cricket and from the information I have the selectors are really happy with my performances – personally and also with my captaincy. I’ve heard no different at this stage.”Clarke made his return from injury in grade cricket in Sydney on Saturday, but it remains to be seen whether he will be ready for the step up to international cricket by the deadline of February 21 imposed by the selectors when they chose the World Cup squad.
