Aaron Judge Lost What Looked Like Clear HR Partly Because of Rays' Temporary Stadium

Aaron Judge may have gotten robbed of a home run during the New York Yankees ' 4-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. But it wasn't because of a Rays fielder.

Partly due to an apparent missed call on the part of the umpiring crew, as well as certain limitations in the Rays' temporary stadium—ironically enough, the Yankees' spring ballpark, George M. Steinbrenner Field—Judge's seeming home run was ruled a foul ball.

In the top of the eighth inning, Judge sent a drive to deep left field, a ball the umpiring crew ruled foul. The umpires then decided to review the call, which was upheld.

One replay angle from the Yes Network broadcast appeared to show the ball traveling well to the right of the foul pole at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Other angles seemed to indicate the opposite: that the ball was clearly foul.

Only serving to complicate matters further is the fact that the foul pole is much higher in all MLB ballparks than the ones at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Perhaps that fooled the umpires? Or maybe they got the call right?

Either way, Yankees manager Aaron Boone was still frustrated about the ruling when Judge was called out on strikes moments later. An irate Boone gave home-plate umpire Adam Beck a piece of his mind, presumably about the called strike and controversial home run call, before he was ejected.

It will be interesting to see what the Yankees have to say about this moment in postgame interviews.

'Real focus on just the fighting spirit of the team' – AC Milan's Christian Pulisic says Mauricio Pochettino’s culture shift is taking hold with the USMNT

Christian Pulisic hailed Mauricio Pochettino’s effort to instill a more combative, unity-focused identity in the U.S. Men’s National Team, saying that emphasis on fighting for one another is already showing in camp. The AC Milan forward added that the 2026 World Cup continues to fuel both his personal ambitions and the team’s desire to inspire the next generation of American players.

Getty Images SportPochettino’s culture change

Pulisic framed Pochettino’s influence as cultural and tactical, arguing the Argentine coach wants the USMNT to mirror the collective toughness seen in elite international teams.

“I mean I would say when we’re in camp and leading up to games, I think he has a real focus on just the fighting spirit of the team,” Pulisic told CBS Sports Golazo. “I think kind of with the South American background too, the Argentinian is very, I mean, you can see when they play. They have the best player, potentially ever, but they have 10 other guys around them to run through a brick wall and do all those things.

“And I think that’s kind of what he wants to instill within the team. And that fighting kind of nasty spirit, and I think that’s his main focus.”

While Pulisic acknowledged it is hard to measure a wholesale transformation without a steady run of competitive matches, he believes the seeds of that identity are beginning to take hold.

“I think it has, it’s tough without the competitive, the more competitive games. [of World Cup qualifying] to really know," Pulisic said. "I think even in some of the friendlies we’ve played, I feel like the team does have a togetherness about them. And I feel very positive about where we are going.”

AdvertisementWorld Cup as motivation

Beyond tactical change, Pulisic described the 2026 World Cup as a personal driving force: a chance to help elevate the game in the United States and to give young American players tangible role models to emulate.

“Like truly, it’s one of my biggest inspirations is to kind of push the game back in the US and especially to inspire the next generation,” Pulisic explained. “I mean, like we talked about, having an American player in Europe and being able to look up to a guy who’s doing incredible things, it pushed me so much to want to do that, to want to be that much better. To believe and see, ‘Okay, he’s done it now, I can do it too.’

“And I hope that some people have watched me play and maybe thought that….I hope that I can inspire a lot of people around the world especially American kids because it’s a an incredible life, an incredible journey that I’ve been on. And I hope that people can see that.”

As the countdown to the 2026 World Cup continues, Pochettino faces the challenge of balancing player development with tactical implementation. 'Don't get too caught up in every innings' – Cummins urges Konstas to look at the big picture

Australia look set to be unchanged again in Jamaica despite Konstas’ struggles at the top of the order

Cummins heaps praise on ‘warrior’ Starc and ‘prolific’ Carey

Pat Cummins has urged Sam Konstas not to evaluate his own performances on an innings-by-innings basis as he tries to find his feet in Test cricket. But the 19-year-old needs a strong finish to the tour of the West Indies to avoid Australia’s opening role being clouded in uncertainty for the months ahead.Konstas followed scores of 3 and 5 in Barbados with 25 and 0 in Grenada. He had given himself a platform in the first innings before edging a drive. In the second, he dragged on against Jayden Seales when Australia’s openers only had a short period to bat at the end of the second day.He now averages 18.25 from four Tests and hasn’t passed 25 since his debut innings of 60 against India at the MCG. He is all-but assured of playing the final Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica – which as a day-night encounter will bring another set of challenges – but without a substantial score will be back among a pack of opening contenders for the Ashes during the early stages of the Australian domestic season.Related

“I think for anyone who’s starting out their Test career, you are kind of picked for a reason and you at your best we know is good enough,” Cummins said. “It’s just about concentrating on what makes you a really good player. For someone like a batter, it might be where you score, what tempo do you normally operate at [when at] your best. And just don’t get too caught up in every innings [feeling] like [it’s] the biggest thing in the world.”I think the stat is, even the best batters in the world don’t hit their average three out of four times or something like that. You’re going to fail more often than you’re going to succeed. So just as long as you’re a quick learner, as long as you’re moving well… and judge yourself after a series or so, not innings by innings.”

“I can’t fathom playing 100 games and keeping that kind of speed. He’s just a warrior. Turns up every week and wants to play no matter what”Pat Cummins on Mitchell Starc

Konstas does have a little experience playing pink-ball cricket, having scored a century for the Prime Minister’s XI against the Indians last season. But the Test at Sabina Park will bring elements of the unknown for everyone as it’s the first to be staged at the ground and will be played using a Dukes ball, which the teams have yet to get their hands on for practice. The new lights at the ground will only get ICC sign-off in the next couple of days and preparations for the match are running very tight to the start of the game. But all indications are that it will take place as planned.”We’ve been trying to get our hands on some [of the pink balls] but we haven’t got some yet. Hopefully they’re waiting for us in Jamaica,” Cummins said. “My experience in pink-ball [Tests] in Australia is you never quite know what you’re going to get. We’ve played a lot, but things can change really quickly so even when you feel like you’re on top things can change quite fast.”Sam Konstas fell for a four-ball duck•Associated PressCummins said he expected the incumbent fast bowlers to be good to back up in Jamaica given workloads have not been huge in the series. Mitchell Starc is set for his 100th Test.”He’s bowling 145kph at the end of that game,” Cummins said. “I can’t fathom playing 100 games and keeping that kind of speed. He’s just a warrior. Turns up every week and wants to play no matter what. Such a low fuss kind of guy. So all things going well it’ll be a great week for him.”The World Test Championship means there are no dead matches for those in the tournament, so despite having gone 2-0 up and retaining the Frank Worrell Trophy, it remains an important outing for Australia. But Cummins was able to reflect on securing the series by a convincing margin, although across the first two days of both Tests his team were challenged before pulling away.”Dream start really,” Cummins said. “Two from two, gets us into the cycle. Really pumped with how we bounced back after Lord’s a couple of weeks ago. It’s been a good couple of weeks.”

Despite injuries, Simmons rallies behind Bangladesh's quicks to step up in Pakistan

With Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed unavailable due to injury for Bangladesh’s T20I series against Pakistan starting Wednesday, their head coach Phil Simmons expects the rest of the pace attack to step up.Taskin is suffering from an ankle injury that has kept him out of competitive cricket for the last two months, while Mustafizur picked up a thumb injury in his last IPL 2025 game for Delhi Capitals last week.”You miss your senior seamers,” Simmons said on the sidelines of Bangladesh’s training session in Lahore on Monday evening. “As we saw, how Fizz (Mustafizur) was bowling in the IPL then. We will miss him. It is also a chance for somebody to take his place in this series. Let’s hope one of the bowlers decide that he wants to fill in for Fizz in this series. Our bowling is usually our stronger suit in this format. But having two senior bowlers, Taskin and Fizz, out, then it balances off.”Bangladesh’s selectors have called up Khaled Ahmed to replace Mustafizur, although they didn’t pick a replacement for Nahid Rana who has opted out of the tour due to personal reasons. Apart from Khaled, Bangladesh have Tanzim Hasan, Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful Islam in the squad. They’ve also added Mehidy Hasan Miraz to replace the injured Soumya Sarkar, in a bid to bolster their bowling attack.Related

  • Mustafizur Rahman out of Pakistan T20Is with thumb injury

Simmons said that the team mood is upbeat despite the 2-1 defeat against UAE and expects the side to bounce back in Lahore to win the three-match series.”It was difficult to lose the series in UAE, but then sometimes that lifts you up. Our morale has been great, so we are hopeful (the result in UAE) will lift us up,” he said. “I think there’s always a great chance of winning the series. People keep saying Pakistan are not playing well. Again, it is about what happens on the day. We have a good chance of winning the series here. We are working hard very hard to try to improve in all aspects. Hopefully we get better in this series.”Simmons also welcomed new fast-bowling coach Shaun Tait into the setup. Tait joined the side in Lahore for his first assignment after being given the appointment for two years. Simmons said that he will get a fair understanding of how the Pakistan players performed in the PSL as both Tait and Mushtaq Ahmed, Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach, worked in the tournament with Karachi Kings and Peshawar Zalmi, respectively.”I think he [Tait] will be brilliant not just for the bowlers, but for the team in general. We will assess the situation here. Mushy was in the PSL right through so we will get information from him and make our decisions,” Simmons added.Despite the loss of experienced players in the fast-bowling front, Bangladesh are still banking on their seamers to bring them a good result in Pakistan. They struggled against the UAE big-hitters last week, struggling to grip the ball in the Sharjah dew. The onus will now be on Shoriful as he is the senior among the bowling group and looked to be among the better Bangladesh seamers in the UAE.Bangladesh play the first match against Pakistan on May 28, followed by matches on May 30 and June 1. All matches will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Man Utd are producing a homegrown Cunha in "game-breaking" 19-year-old

Manchester United had to react to what happened in the 2024/25 campaign after they endured a dismal end to the season under head coach Ruben Amorim.

The Red Devils lost 18 of their 38 Premier League matches, finishing 15th in the division, and lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the Europa League.

Instead of opting to change manager once again, despite Amorim’s struggles and some question marks over his 3-4-2-1 system, the club opted to change things by dipping into the transfer market.

Manchester United invested in the forward line, despite a lack of European football, by signing Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko to bolster the manager’s options up front.

Man United forward Bryan Mbeumo

It is now down to Amorim to find a way to get the best out of those three exciting attacking recruits to ensure that the Red Devils do not go through another dismal season.

Mbeumo has already scored twice, against Grimsby and Burnley, since moving from Brentford, but United supporters are still waiting to see the best out of Cunha in a red shirt.

Why there is more to come from Matheus Cunha

The Brazil international has failed to score a goal or create a ‘big chance’ for the team in his three Premier League starts for United so far this season, per Sofascore, which shows that he has had an underwhelming start to his career in Manchester.

However, there is no need to panic because Cunha is a proven Premier League star who has shown that he can deliver consistent quality at the top end of the pitch, as evidenced by his form for Wolverhampton Wanderers last season.

The chart above shows that he should be a huge upgrade on Mason Mount in the number ten position when he finds his feet at Old Trafford and starts to deliver the kind of performances everyone knows that he is capable of, due to his ability to make an impact in front of goal.

Cunha, who signed for Wolves from Atletico Madrid, has proven that he can score goals and create high-quality opportunities for his teammates at an impressive rate in the Premier League.

As you can see in the table above, the Brazilian maestro scored 27 goals and created 20 ‘big chances’ in 55 appearances in the top-flight for Wolves in the last two seasons, outperforming his xG by a significant margin in both of those campaigns.

This shows that Manchester United have signed a star who is proven in the division and will deliver quality in the final third if Amorim can set the team up to get him in enough positions to make an impact at the top end of the pitch.

Manchester United's Matheus Cunha

Therefore, there is no need to panic or rush to judgement over Cunha’s fairly slow start to life at Old Trafford, because there is plenty more to come from the Brazilian maestro, given what he has already achieved in the Premier League in the Midlands.

If the former Atletico Madrid attacking midfielder does fail to translate his Wolves form over to Manchester, though, Amorim may find the club’s own homegrown version of Cunha from the academy.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

19-year-old attacking midfielder Jack Moorhouse, who is currently on loan at Leyton Orient in League One, could emerge as Manchester United’s own Cunha in the future if he continues to develop and progress in his career.

Why Jack Moorhouse could be a homegrown Matheus Cunha

Judging young players and predicting what their ceiling is or how they will develop over time is not an exact science, which is why so many players fail to make the grade after emerging as exciting talents early on in their careers.

Moorhouse did not burst onto the scene at 16 like Lamine Yamal or score in the Premier League at 18 like Kobbie Mainoo, but he has shown some very promising signs that bode well for the future.

The teenage talent scored four goals and provided two assists in 13 starts as an attacking midfielder for the Red Devils at U18 and U21 level, per Transfermarkt, almost a goal contribution every other game.

Analyst Ben Mattinson, in the post above, was impressed by his performances for United’s academy sides, describing him as a “game-breaking ball carrier” who is “ideal” for the left-sided number ten role in Amorim’s system, which is currently occupied by Cunha.

Moorhouse’s best performance for Leyton Orient so far this season came in a 3-1 win over Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy, and his display was Cunha-esque on paper.

As you can see in the table above, the Ireland U21 international showcased his quality as a goalscorer, a creator, and a dribbler, which are Cunha’s main three attributes as a player.

You can see in the clips above that Moorhouse loves to drive forward with the ball at his feet, taking players on, and he scored an excellent goal from range with his weak foot.

Albeit against very different opposition, the goal was not too dissimilar to the one that Cunha scored against Premier League champions Liverpool earlier this year for Wolves.

Both Moorhouse and Cunha are attack-minded midfielders who can score goals and create chances for their teammates, but they are also exciting players to watch because of the way they carry the ball and take defenders on.

Therefore, Manchester United may be brewing their homegrown version of the Brazil international at Carrington and Leyton Orient, and it is now down to the Irish maestro to develop and take the next steps in his career to convince Amorim to bring him into the first-team next season.

Federico Chiesa snubbed! Arne Slot drops in-form winger for Liverpool's Champions League trip to Galatasaray despite being added to European squad

Federico Chiesa has not travelled with Liverpool for their Champions League clash with Galatasaray on Tuesday, despite the winger’s impressive run of form. The Italy international was registered in the Reds’ European squad in place of injured team-mate and compatriot Giovanni Leoni but he has since been left at home for the trip to Turkey.

  • Chiesa a notable absentee from Liverpool's 21-man squad

Liverpool announced earlier on Monday that a 21-man travelling squad will make the trip to Super Lig side Galatasaray ahead of Tuesday’s game, with Chiesa being a notable absentee among the list of members.

Liverpool’s travelling squad in full: Alisson, Gomez, Endo, Van Dijk, Konate, Kerkez, Wirtz, Szoboszlai, Isak, Mac Allister, Salah, Bradley, Jones, Gakpo, Ekitike, Mamardashvili, Robertson, Woodman, Frimpong, Gravenberch, Ngumoha.

  • Chiesa left out despite being fit

And in a new report from Liverpool manager Arne Slot has taken the decision to leave Chiesa at home for the Galatasaray match, despite the 27-year-old being fit and ready to play.

  • Surprise move follows Chiesa's impressive run of form

The surprise move comes amid a purple patch of form for Chiesa. The former Juventus forward was handed a rare start in Liverpool’s third-round Carabao Cup clash against Southampton last Tuesday, registering the assists for Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike's goals as Slot’s men ran out 2-1 winners on the night. Chiesa has also made a strong impact as a substitute this season, scoring against Bournemouth on the opening night of the 2025-26 Premier League season and then against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Chiesa replaced Leoni in squad after defender suffered ACL injury

Chiesa was initially left out of Liverpool’s 22-man squad for the league phase of the Champions League earlier this month. However, he was later brought in to replace Leoni after the defender teared an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the victory over Southampton. The 18-year-old sustained the injury towards the end of what was an impressive debut for Liverpool following his summer move from Serie A side Parma.

Ex-Man Utd boss Erik Ten Hag REJECTS return to former club in bid to protect finances after being ruthlessly axed by Bayer Leverkusen

Ex-Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has reportedly rejected a return to one of his old clubs in a bid to protect his finances following his sudden departure from Bayer Leverkusen. Ten Hag returned to management in the summer after being sacked by the Red Devils last October, but only lasted two leagues games in the BayArena hot seat.

GettyWhy Ten Hag won't accept FC Twente job?

According to , Eredivisie side FC Twente had shown interest in Ten Hag, who previously enjoyed three spells with the club as a player. Twente have parted company with Joseph Oosting, leaving them with a void to fill in their dugout. Ten Hag has decided not to head back to his homeland, though, because joining a new club so soon after his Leverkusen sacking would severely impact his €6m (£5.2m) severance package, which equates to €100,000 (£86,631) a day.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportAnother ex-United coach could benefit

Twente could now approach another man with strong ties to United in the form of Ruud van Nistelrooy. The former United striker coached the club on a caretaker basis after Ten Hag's sacking, and is said to be a potential candidate for the Twente job after seeing his 27-game spell in charge of Leicester City brought to a close in June.

Why did Leverkusen sack Ten Hag?

Leverkusen collected just one point from their first two Bundesliga games of the new season, with a 3-3 draw against ten-man Werder Bremen proving to be the last straw for Ten Hag. The 55-year-old later expressed his frustration at the club's "unprecedented" decision to let him go and accused the board of failing to give him any trust.
