Newcastle: Pope a "world-class signing"

Newcastle United moved a step closer to ending their trophy drought with victory over Southampton in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday evening, with the Magpies securing a 2-1, second-leg triumph in front of a raucous home crowd.

While much of the focus elsewhere was on the hectic transfer activity taking place on deadline day, inside St James’ Park the sole focus among both players and supporters was on sealing a long-awaited return to Wembley, with it having been far too long for a club of such stature to have been without silverware.

After sealing a narrow, 1-0 win away at St Mary’s a week ago, the Tynesiders took firm control of the tie inside just five minutes last night, as academy graduate Sean Longstaff produced a stunning, fizzing effort to net his first goal on home soil in four years.

Having waited so long to break that goalscoring duck, the 25-year-old then bolstered his tally with another impressive finish midway through the first half, the Englishman running onto Miguel Almiron’s pullback and brilliantly slotting past a helpless Gavin Bazunu.

While a swift Che Adams reply – as well as a late Bruno Guimaraes dismissal – would ensure some understandable nerves for the northeast side, Eddie Howe’s men were ultimately able to see out the match to set up what will most likely be a mouthwatering, showpiece showdown with Manchester United.

On a night of standout performances that epitomised the club’s remarkable rise over the past 12 months or so, one notably key figure was that of summer arrival Nick Pope, with the £60k-per-week colossus having been integral to keeping the Saints at bay.

Although the Englishman has little to do in truth against Nathan Jones’ side – having made just two saves and recorded only 19 touches – one moment, in particular, laid bare just why the 30-year-old has been a “world-class signing” for the club, as described by journalist Carl Kinsella.

With the game finely poised at 2-1 to the hosts – and 3-1 on aggregate – the former Burnley man made a vital intervention to deny opposition striker Adam Armstong in the closing stages, superbly racing out of his goal to thwart the diminutive forward, following a stunning, threaded pass from Romeo Lavia.

It is arguably an indication of an elite goalkeeper to be able to remain alert despite having had little involvement in the game, with Howe no doubt thankful that the £10m man acted so effectively to quash any hope of a comeback for the visitors.

Equally, the ten-cap gem could arguably have done little about Adams’ first-half piledriver, with that effort having been the first goal that the experienced ace had conceded in the competition this season, after also keeping 12 clean sheets in his 20 Premier League outings in the current campaign.

After a season in which the likes of Karl Darlow, Freddie Woodman and Martin Dubravka were all unable to truly nail down a regular role last term, it is no surprise that Newcastle’s recent resurgence has come with a more reliable presence between the sticks, in the form of Pope.

Newcastle: Conor Gallagher deal unlikely

Newcastle United are unlikely to bring in Conor Gallagher now that Chelsea have agreed to sell Jorginho to Arsenal, according to reliable reporter Michael Bridge.

The Lowdown: Gallagher on the move?

It was reported last night by Craig Hope that Everton had made a £45m offer for Gallagher, with the journalist also adding that the player wants to stay at Chelsea, but would seek a move to Newcastle or a top six club if he was forced out.

However, as a result of the news that the Blues have agreed to sell Jorginho to Arsenal, with the Italian now due there for his medical, it has emerged that Graham Potter may be unwilling to allow another central midfielder to leave the club.

The Latest: Update from Bridge

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT about the possibility of Gallagher leaving, Bridge said:

“From the little bits I heard this morning, it was either going to be Conor Gallagher going out or Jorginho. He’s highly regarded by a number of clubs but if Jorginho ends up going to Arsenal which looks to be the case, then Chelsea will have a decision to make.

Despite Newcastle’s interest, I think they’d be reluctant to let him go to what they consider to be a Premier League rival now. I wouldn’t completely rule out a late loan deal, but a lot will rest on Graham Potter’s decision.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-7/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Disappointing news

The 22-year-old has an attacking focus, which is indicated by the fact that he has received an average of 3.87 progressive passes per 90 over the past year, in the 93rd percentile compared to other midfielders, and there is every indication he would be an upgrade on the outgoing Jonjo Shelvey.

Hailed as ‘unbelievable’ by Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira (via Chelsea News), the four-time England international has averaged more non-penalty goals and assists per 90 than Shelvey in the past year.

Not only that, but he would also be an improvement defensively, given that he has averaged more tackles and interceptions than the 30-year-old in the same timeframe.

Bridge does not completely discard the chances of a late deal, so Newcastle should now see if they can tempt Chelsea with an offer, as he would be a quality addition in the engine room.

Spurs: Conte must axe Son vs Man City

Tottenham Hotspur have won just three of their last nine in the Premier League and now face second-placed Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium this evening.

Antonio Conte will be looking to see his side bounce back from Sunday’s comprehensive north London derby defeat to Arsenal, whilst the same goes for Pep Guardiola and his men, having also lost in their recent clash with arch-rivals United.

It’ll be no easy feat with pressure and uncertainty starting to mount over the future of the Italian head coach, though he could do himself some favours by axing his underperforming stars.

One of which should be Heung-min Son, who has been woefully out-of-sorts for the majority of the campaign and against the Gunners, with whom he usually has a good record, his influence waned once more.

Indeed, the South Korean dynamo has scored just one Premier League goal this season, besides a hat-trick versus Leicester City, with both of his assists also coming before mid-October. It means he has provided only a solitary goal contribution across his last eight top-flight outings, per Transfermarkt.

He has misfired in some of the biggest games of the season too, notably in both fixtures against the Gunners, as well as Chelsea, Manchester United and West Ham United, which makes his prospects of hurting the defending champions a lot bleaker.

It was only last season that Son emerged as one of the most prolific and exciting forwards on the planet, taking a share of the Premier League Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah.

Fast forward to now and his goals-per-shot ratio (0.08) is the lowest since his move from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. In fact, it’s been double that in all but one campaign and it’s not because of a lack of service as he’s averaging the most shots on target per 90 in the same time frame, via FBref.

His own creative influence has regressed from last season as well, seeing a lower average of progressive passes, key passes and shot-creating actions per 90 in the English top-flight.

All of the above is clearly contributing to Spurs’ lacklustre time in the final third, so with Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison back fit from injury, and Bryan Gil catching the eye in his last few appearances, it would make sense for Conte to make the bold and arguably brutal decision to drop Son from the starting XI.

The £36m-rated whiz was once dubbed an “absolute beast” by rapper and renowned Lilywhites supporter AJ Tracey but he is some way off that level right now, given the evidence above. If Conte keeps the faith in him, then he’ll only be contributing towards his own immediate downfall at Tottenham.

AND in other news, Imagine him & Bentancur: Conte can form “incredible” Spurs duo with £30m-rated “beast”…

Liverpool: Van Dijk injury a ‘real worry’

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk’s injury will be a ‘real worry’ for the Premier League club, according to talkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor.

The Lowdown: Initial fears confirmed

The Reds suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Brentford on Monday, and unfortunately for Jurgen Klopp, the result wasn’t the only negative from that game.

The Netherlands international was substituted at the interval after sustaining a hamstring injury in the first half, and it has since been revealed that the body blow is worse than initially feared, meaning that he is set to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The Latest: Agbonlahor’s comments

Speaking to Football Insider, Agbonlahor claimed that Van Dijk has been underperforming of late and suggested that, in years to come, the Dutchman may not be able to continue at the level that people would expect of the one-time PFA Player of the Year.

The former Aston Villa striker said: “I’m hoping it’s just a bad spell for him. But when I’m watching him, he doesn’t look himself.

“We’ve seen Mbeumo run in behind him, and he wasn’t catching him. The Van Dijk of old would have been all over it, but he looked laboured.

“Maybe there is an underlying injury, but not everyone can play at the top level until 37 or 38. It could be that his legs have gone.

“It happens – even to the best players – and that will be a real worry for Liverpool.”

The Verdict: Blow for Klopp

Whilst Van Dijk hasn’t been at his best this season, as reflected in his WhoScored career ratings, it will still come as a massive blow for Liverpool to learn that they will be without him for the foreseeable future.

The 6 foot 3 colossus has been a rock at the heart of the Reds’ backline, making 4.1 clearances and winning 2.6 aerial duels per league game in the current campaign, along with scoring two goals (WhoScored).

Liverpool still have the likes of Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate available so there’s no need to panic about a lack of reliable centre-back options, but the club will nonetheless be hoping to have Van Dijk return as quickly as possible.

Rangers: McBurnie can be Beale’s own Ramos

New Glasgow Rangers manager Michael Beale is set to face his first big test against Hibernian next Thursday, with the Premiership season resuming following the World Cup break.

Having been in charge since November 28 and with his prior experience at Ibrox, he will have had a solid few weeks of preparation time before the tie against Hibs.

The 42-year-old will also be keeping an eye on a few potential transfer targets as the January window looms into view, and he will surely want to refresh a stagnating playing squad.

One player that must be looked at again is Sheffield United striker Oliver McBurnie, especially considering his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 6 foot 2 machine was first linked with the club in the summer of 2021 and considering he is a massive fan of the club, a move would surely make sense.

Indeed, the 26-year-old is similar in style to that of Portuguese hitman Goncalo Ramos, who burst onto the World Cup scene by scoring a wonderful hat trick against Switzerland.

According to FBref’s similar player model, Ramos is the ninth-most similar player to McBurnie across Europe’s top five leagues, and given the 21-year-olds recent form, it isn’t a bad comparison.

This season has seen the two strikers register similar statistics with regard to goals (both nine), shots per match (4.87 to 4.06), goal-creating actions per match (0.34 to 0.23), and dribble success rate (45.8% to 40%).

They are both clearly dangerous players in the final third and McBurnie even ranks in the top 5% over the previous year for total shots (4.11 per 90) and touches in the opposition penalty area (7.02).

The Scot was even described as “unplayable” by former national team striker Chris Iwelumo back in 2020, and although McBurnie suffered a dip in form last season – scoring just once – his improvement this season may justify Iwelumo’s praise.

With the chance to secure the player on a pre-contract agreement in January, Beale should be wasting absolutely no time and McBurnie could be Rangers’ own Ramos, which will no doubt please the Ibrox faithful.

West Ham make offer to sign Jakub Kiwior

West Ham United have made an offer to sign Spezia defender Jakub Kiwior, according to reports out of Italy.

The Lowdown: Exciting talent…

Still only 22, the Poland international received his first World Cup call-up this year and is currently at the tournament in Qatar, playing in every minute so far of his team’s run to the knockout rounds.

Kiwior has been rewarded for his brilliant Serie A form yet again this season, playing his way into becoming a mainstay under Spezia boss Luca Gotti. Only their star striker M’Bala Nzola has played more league minutes than the 22-year-old, who has stood out as a defensive colossus for his club.

Kiwior has averaged more interceptions and blocks per 90 than any Spezia player, which potentially led to him getting the call for Poland.

The Latest: West Ham make offer for Kiwior…

As per Italian sources, it appears that West Ham have taken their interest in the Polish starlet one step further.

Milan Live claim that the east Londoners have ‘started contacts’ with Spezia over a move for Kiwior and ‘intend to reach an agreement’.

As a result, West Ham’s ‘first offer’ of €15m (£13m) has been presented, but the Ligurian club want €20m (£17m) to consider selling the defender.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-5/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Keep pushing?

If West Ham manager David Moyes is seeking defensive reinforcements, you could argue that Kiwior is one of the target with the greatest potential.

His form for Spezia at such a young age is a clear indication of his brilliance, leading to none other than Poland superstar Robert Lewandowski calling him ‘extraordinary’.

Therefore, the Irons should keep pushing in their pursuit of the Spezia defender, not least given the injury concerns and potential departures in that area of Moyes’ squad.

Leeds: Dean Jones shares Adam Forshaw news

Transfer insider Dean Jones has said that Leeds United will allow Adam Forshaw to move on in January.

The Lowdown: Forshaw’s injury issues

The 31-year-old has had a number of off-field struggles in recent years, most notably a hip problem which ruled him out of 71 consecutive games.

Hailed as ‘fantastic’ by former Leeds manager Simon Grayson, Forshaw has made just three appearances in the Premier League during the current campaign and is out of contract next summer.

It looks as if Whites officials are now ready to call time on his Elland Road stay earlier than expected, with preparations being made ahead of the January transfer window.

The Latest: Jones’ comments

Speaking to GiveMeSport regarding Forshaw, Jones said that he has been told Leeds will make the midfielder available for transfer and believes that clubs in the Championship will be interested.

The journalist said of the 31-year-old: “It probably is and he is available in January. I’m told that it is true. There will be interest in him, particularly at the top of the Championship.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-54/” title=”Latest Leeds United news” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Right decision

Forshaw has hit double figures for league appearances just once in the last three seasons, so it does appear to be the right decision to offload him in the New Year.

The midfielder showed glimpses of Premier League quality last season, lining out 22 times, but his injury problems have since returned and unfortunately he can’t be relied on due to his fitness history.

Hopefully he will find a new club and play regular first-team football, and he should depart with the best wishes from all associated with Leeds.

Aston Villa eyeing Thomas Tuchel move

Steven Gerrard is a man under serious pressure at Aston Villa and it seems as if the board are already eyeing up potential replacements.

According to the Telegraph, Mauricio Pochettino, Unai Emery and Thomas Tuchel are all on NSWE’s shortlist of candidates to replace Gerrard, who looks to be on the brink of losing his job after last weekend’s 2-0 defeat against Chelsea.

The Villans currently sit 16th in the Premier League table after winning just two of their opening ten fixtures, despite a summer of seemingly-impressive recruitment that included Boubacar Kamara, Diego Carlos and Philippe Coutinho all swapping Champions League football for Villa Park.

The report claims that poor results in Gerrard’s next two games against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Thursday and Brentford at Villa Park on Sunday could seal his fate, with Pochettino currently the top target to replace him.

However, Villa might be better off approaching Tuchel, as while it would be an ambitious swoop for the 49-year-old, his Champions League success with Chelsea emphasises his ability as a top manager.

Pochettino has enjoyed impressive spells with Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur in the past but was ultimately unable to win a trophy despite being in charge during a Spurs golden era which included Christian Eriksen, a prime Dele Alli and world-class forwards in Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son.

The Argentine also showed his vulnerabilities in the Champions League with PSG, as despite possessing Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar in his front three, PSG once again struggled against Europe’s elite.

Tuchel meanwhile, was able to win the Champions League during his time at Chelsea and was sacked somewhat prematurely this summer, as he coped with the big changes at the club following Roman Abramovic’s departure.

Ben Chilwell was full of praise for the German manager last season, saying:

“As Chelsea players, we have full confidence in the manager and we know we’re not going to get a better manager here, I’m not just saying it. He’s an unbelievable manager in all aspects, and I think he has a lot of trust in us as well.”

During Pochettino’s spell with Spurs, he averaged 1.84 points per game whereas Tuchel averaged a seriously impressive 2.07 points per game at Chelsea.

That certainly suggests that the German has the edge, so NSWE must favour a move for the former Dortmund boss should they decide to fire Gerrard.

Unlike the former Tottenham boss, he actually has success under his belt, notably winning two Ligue 1 titles in Paris too. It would be an inspired appointment by Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris.

West Brom predicted XI vs Bristol City

West Bromwich Albion will go into today’s game against Bristol City hopeful that they can achieve back-to-back victories for the first time this season.

With Steve Bruce yet to be replaced over a week after his sacking, Richard Beale will once again take charge hoping to mastermind another performance like their 2-0 victory over Reading.

They will have to overcome a Robins side that sits just four points above them in the table.

It marks a fine opportunity to give the incoming manager, whoever it may be, the best possible atmosphere to come into.

With no injuries to contend with, it can be expected that Beale will not make wholesale changes.

As a result, here’s the West Brom XI we’re predicting for tonight’s game…

From their win against the Royals, Beale is expected to make just two changes.

Alex Palmer should continue in goal behind an unchanged back three, as a rare clean sheet makes them the best available options.

Erik Pieters will continue to deputise as the leftmost centre back.

Goalscorer Matt Phillips will be hoping to continue his upturn in form on the right flank, with Conor Townsend occupying left wing-back.

The first of two changes could see Tom Rogic recalled for Jake Livermore, to add some added class and energy in midfield beside last week’s match-winner.

Academy graduate Taylor Gardner-Hickman will continue in central midfield, as finally since the departure of Bruce has he been allowed to flourish in his natural position.

They will sit behind a front three that only sees one major change.

Grady Diangana and Jed Wallace will start on the flanks despite their rather underwhelming form, but now free from the shackles of the previous regime, the two could be the catalyst for a true turnaround in the Baggies’ season.

That leaves the impressive 23-year-old, Brandon Thomas-Asante, to likely drop to the bench. Dubbed a “pocket rocket” by his teammate Phillips, Karlan Grant is expected to be preferred to him as Beale strives for a more experienced name to spearhead his front line.

Although he too has been misfiring, he could truly be the key to unlocking this squad. His chances are dwindling, however, as he has started just one of the last four.

Tottenham: Cascarino questions Conte after Eric Dier message

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has been told to ‘hold back’ by talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino after the Italian’s message on Eric Dier.

The Lowdown: Dier excelling…

The former Sporting Lisbon star has been shining as a member of Conte’s back three at Spurs, prompting England boss Gareth Southgate to grant him a recall to the national team squad.

Dier will travel with the Three Lions for their upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Italy and Germany with members of the media even saying that his inclusion is ‘long overdue’.

The 28-year-old is one of just three Spurs players who have featured for every single Premier League minute so far this term, with Dier putting in another brilliant display yesterday against Leicester City.

The Latest: Cascarino criticises Conte after Dier message…

While Cascarino said that Dier has been brilliant over the last two months, the talkSPORT pundit has moved quickly to refute Conte’s latest message on the player.

Spurs’ head coach drew comparisons with Italian footballing legend Leonardo Bonucci, claiming that the Englishman can ‘replicate’ the Juventus captain.

After Conte’s statement, Cascarino has told the ex-Inter Milan boss to ‘hold back’, saying:

“He’s had a decent start to the season but comparing him to Bonucci is a bit of a long one for me at the moment, I’d hold back on that one.

“I wouldn’t have that he’s as versatile as Bonucci, maybe he was a failed midfielder more than a midfielder, he didn’t pull up any trees.

“I think he’s not bad, I’m still reserved in my opinion over the course of a season on Dier.”

The Verdict: Too soon?

Dier has been fantastic for Spurs this season and deserves praise from both Conte and the media. That being said, the season is a long one, and before measuring the Englishman’s contribution overall, we must judge him based off a whole campaign.

However, the 28-year-old shone as part of Conte’s back three over 2021/22, making more clearances per 90 than any Spurs player whilst racking up the second-most blocks in that time (WhoScored).

In terms of likeness to Bonucci, it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that Dier could replicate the 35-year-old’s leadership qualities in the Lilywhites dressing room – especially given his experience of 328 appearances for the club and 45 caps for England.
