ECB budget cuts mean overseas programmes are cut

There is not expected to be a reduction in the England Lions programme and it is hoped counties may still send young players overseas

The ECB has confirmed the cancellation of their pace programme and overseas placements. With budgets strained – not least by set-up costs for the new tournament, currently The Hundred – a review of funding was undertaken and the two areas identified as most expendable. The pace programme, which has seen the most promising fast bowlers in domestic cricket given specialist coaching and opportunities to develop, has been criticised not just for its cost but its failure to deliver. Few of the eight seamers who went on it last winter were fit at the start of the 2018 season and one of those who was – Toby Roland-Jones – experienced a recurrence of a stress fracture that ended his season. The last programme saw the bowlers invited to numerous training camps at Loughborough as well as two warm weather training camps in Desert Springs and one two-week one in Potchefstroom. The overseas placements, meanwhile, saw eight promising young players given opportunities to play good level club cricket during the English winter. It was a scheme that sought to benefit young spinners, in particular, and had seen Mason Crane and Matt Parkinson play Grade cricket in Sydney under the watchful eye of Stuart MacGill, while several offspinners – most recently Glamorgan’s Andrew Salter and Hampshire’s Brad Taylor – have been placed with Jeetan Patel in Wellington. Middlesex’s Max Holden and Somerset’s George Bartlett also played club cricket in Perth. It is understood there will be no reduction in the Lions (or Young Lions) commitments – they are to travel to the UAE before Christmas to play Pakistan and tour India after Christmas – and that no redundancies will be made. It is also understood the ECB hopes that counties will continue to arrange overseas placements, but such trips will not be centrally funded.”ECB’s priority over the next 12 months is to ensure our Player Pathway programmes continue to provide the best possible support for England teams ahead of our winter tours, and next summer’s Cricket World Cup and the Ashes,” said an ECB spokesman.”We remain fully committed to developing the Player Pathway and the Performance Centre, and will consider opportunities for further investment in our next financial planning cycle from 2020 onwards.”The timing of the news is intriguing. While it is not long since the ECB announced a lucrative broadcast deal (for the period starting in 2020) and they can expect a large surplus in 2019 – the World Cup profits are expected to be around £50m and it is also an Ashes year – all the signs are the organisation is facing significant financial pressures. They recently published accounts that show their reserves have dropped by around GBP65m in two years. Those reserves – which the ECB say they aim to keep at 40 percent of turnover – were down to GBP8.6m, down from GBP73.1m in 2016.

Man City player ratings vs Man Utd: Fantastic Phil Foden should be in Ballon d'Or contention! Derby-day hero gets misfiring Erling Haaland out of jail yet again

The England midfielder scored another two goals to ensure Pep Guardiola's side came from behind to see off their local rivals

Manchester City might not be playing at their scintillating best at present, but they remain just one point off Premier League leaders Liverpool after Phil Foden inspired the defending champions to come from behind and beat local rivals Manchester United 3-1 on Sunday.

City dominated the early proceedings, but found themselves behind at half-time after Marcus Rashford's stunning eighth-minute strike was followed by an impressive rearguard from the visitors, as well as an incredible close-range miss from Erling Haaland.

But just as he has so many times already this season, it was Foden to the rescue, as he first cut inside to lash a left-footed drive into the top corner from 20 yards, before netting the winner after trading passes with Julian Alvarez. Haaland then added gloss to the scoreline in stoppage-time after United gave the ball away on the edge of their own penalty area.

The win keeps Pep Guardiola's side within touching distance of Liverpool, whom they visit next Sunday in what may now prove to be a title-decider at Anfield.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Ederson (6/10):

Had no chance with Rashford's stunning strike. Largely a spectator thereafter, but did rush out to challenge Garnacho well shortly before Foden made it 2-1.

    Kyle Walker (7/10):

Did well to track back against Rashford and snuff out counter-attacks on a couple of occasions. Otherwise offered himself as the spare man in attacks on numerous occasions.

    Ruben Dias (5/10):

Potentially could have done better up against Fernandes in the build-up to Rashford's goal, but otherwise his game was limited to keeping the ball ticking over as City built from the back.

    Nathan Ake (4/10):

Played Fernandes onside for the opening goal and never looked wholly comfortable from a defensive point of view.

    Midfield

    John Stones (6/10):

Took up his now usual position in central midfield and kept City ticking over while getting involved physically on the rare occasion the ball was turned over.

    Rodri (7/10):

At the heart of City's best attacks, with Stones' positioning meaning the Spaniard could move further up the pitch for the most part. Tested Onana with a volleyed effort in the first half and got the assist for Haaland's late goal.

    Bernardo Silva (5/10):

Couldn't control the game in the same way he did at Old Trafford earlier in the season. Lacked any real cutting edge to his passing on the edge of the box.

    Kevin De Bruyne (4/10):

Probably his most disappointing performance since returning from injury. United crowded him out for the most part, while to say his finishing was wayward would be kind.

    Attack

    Phil Foden (10/10):

City's best player throughout, and by some distance. Always dangerous in attack, and after twice being denied by Onana in the first half, found the equaliser with a stunning strike after the break. Superb give-and-go with Alvarez then settled it. In the form of his career right now.

    Erling Haaland (5/10):

Not for the first time in recent weeks, the Norwegian missed the target when it looked easier to score from Foden's headed cross late in the first half. Struggled to get fully into the game throughout, but did get his goal in stoppage-time with a well-taken finish.

    Jeremy Doku (4/10):

A box of tricks as usual, but the Belgium winger's final product left a lot to be desired. Replaced by Alvarez before the hour-mark.

    Subs & Manager

    Julian Alvarez (7/10):

Gave City's attack a different dimension after replacing Doku, and provided the all-important assist for Foden's winner.

    Oscar Bobb (N/A):

    On for Foden in stoppage-time.

    Pep Guardiola (7/10):

Can't be blamed for some of the missed chances in the first half, and the introduction of Alvarez meant Bernardo and Foden could then switch flanks and cause confusion. It was Foden popping up on the left that ended up settling the game.

Newcastle may go against PIF policy with special clause in Bruno contract

Since the takeover by a consortium of the Saudi Public Investment Fund, Newcastle United – to their credit – have recruited incredibly shrewdly – welcoming players who played a large part in guiding Eddie Howe's side to a top four finish in the Premier League last season.

Now that they have built those Champions League foundations, however, it is important to keep hold of them, amid likely interest from elsewhere, should a player perform particularly well for the club.

This means that the Magpies would be wise to start offering new contracts to those in the squad who make the biggest difference, which they have already reportedly done when it comes to Bruno Guimaraes, with a deal that could see the new owners go against their own policy.

What's the latest on Bruno Guimaraes' contract?

Even though the midfielder's current contract isn't coming to an end until the summer of 2026, Newcastle are reportedly wasting no time in tying Guimaraes down to a new deal, clearly keen to cement his future at the club. However, it is not a deal that you would usually associate the Magpies' current owners with making.

According to Ben Jacobs, they could go against one of their own policies by including a release clause at the player's request. He told Caught Offside: "Bruno Guimaraes is really close to signing a new Newcastle contract extension that could keep him at the club until 2028. With the European window shut, real progress was made last week.

“Newcastle have always been calm about the situation because Guimaraes is under contract until 2026 as it stands. And Chelsea and Liverpool were both told when they enquired that the Brazilian is not for sale.

“The expectation is that a new deal could have a release clause in it, but interestingly this would go against Newcastle’s policy since PIF took majority control of the club in October 2021.

"Guimaraes will also have to decide if it’s better to agree to one. In theory it would give him wiggle room, but any clause would be in excess of £100m and informed by the packages agreed this summer for both Declan Rice (£105m) and Moises Caicedo (£115m).

“Guimaraes is currently very happy at Newcastle. Although he said during preseason there was some 'doubt' about his contract situation, the Brazilian has not been seeking a move away. This would only change if Newcastle fail to build on last season and ultimately get regular European football.”

How has Bruno Guimaraes performed this season?

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

As a collective, Newcastle have been fairly poor so far this season, losing three of their four games, which came against Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton & Hove Albion. Individually speaking, though, Guimaraes has once again been one of the standouts.

According to FBref, the Brazilian has already made 30 progressive passes this season, as well as six progressive carries. Meanwhile, he's been more than good enough defensively, too, making nine tackles and three blocks.

As Newcastle's fixtures's begin to get easier, those numbers will only increase, and show a player once again playing at the top of his game for the Magpies.

Everton: Dyche already has Tom Cannon 2.0 at Goodison Park

Everton recruited well in the summer given their immense financial predicament, which has seen them fall dangerously close to failing to comply with the FFP regulations.

Amidst the marquee signing of Beto for £30m, this was a move that has seen the fee deferred until the next financial year, whilst the other acquisitions largely marked a myriad of free transfers and loan moves. Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell have inherited quite the mess, but they took great strides towards fixing it last window.

With their Premier League rivals (at the time) having written to the league regarding the Toffees' unruly spending of the past, they were referred to an independent commission back in March despite their unwavering stance that they had in fact complied with the rules.

With the results still yet to be found, the work goes on to ease their FFP headache regardless as the new stadium continues to drain their resources.

Fortunately, one option they do have to earn pure profit in the eyes of the UEFA is by selling on academy graduates, as they do not count the expenditure clubs undertake regarding their youth academies, but do count the profit made from a sale.

This has been a keen option that the Merseyside club has used on a number of occasions in the past, with Ross Barkley, Francis Jeffers, Wayne Rooney and more having flown the nest for admirable fees to offset their fiscal ailments.

wayne-rooney

With a potential move-in date to Bramley-Moore Dock scheduled at around mid-way through the 2024/25 season, it is clear that this is a strategy they are seeking to employ until they can crawl across the finish line and once again begin raking in big revenue without that constant drain going on in the background.

One such recent example is that of Tom Cannon.

How much did Everton sell Tom Cannon for?

This new strategy was emphasised over the summer with a few key departures, as Ellis Simms, Ishe Samuels-Smith and Cannon all being sold despite the huge potential they commanded.

The latter probably marked the most disappointing of those sales, as despite the £7.5m recouped, he arguably held the most promise given his exceptional goalscoring figures at youth level.

Having made just four first-team appearances, it admittedly marked a huge fee for someone so unproven at the senior level. However, with 29 goals in 42 games for the U18s, and having scored eight in 20 Championship appearances for Preston North End just last season, it is understandable why the relegated Foxes swooped for him.

Tom Cannon

His presence will be missed though even if he remained largely uninfluential, with his temporary teammate Ryan Ledson even noting: "Tom Cannon has been absolutely brilliant. He’s a credit to himself and Everton Football Club. Since the second he’s come through the door he’s worked hard, got his head down and he’s a nice kid. He’s 20 years of age, has the world at his feet and all he needs to do is focus on himself and scoring goals because he can go wherever he wants to be."

So, with his departure now sealed and Dyche having bolstered the first-team squad sufficiently, the task now turns to forging their next great academy star who could either spearhead their survival push or earn them another huge sum.

However, with the wealth of attacking talent they now boast after investing heavily over the summer, perhaps any progression could be geared towards the latter as they seek to juggle the FFP investigation which looms over their season.

Who is Francis Okoronkwo?

One man who could step into Cannon's boots is Francis Okoronkwo, who despite only moving to Everton in 2021 has seemingly already adjusted to life in Merseyside given how immediately prolific he has proven himself to be.

A natural striker, described on Everton's official website as "a skilful attacker who possesses impressive speed, movement, and balance", the 18-year-old finisher has already fast-tracked his development by thriving for the U18s, earning a swift promotion.

Scoring three in his first eight games in the U18s Premier League, as well as three more in as many FA Youth Cup games, the 2022/23 campaign marked his first as a regular in the Premier League 2. A return of six goal contributions was admirable, with his dynamism and trickery often leading to being forced out wide to accommodate others in the side.

This versatility will likely have caught Dyche's eye already, given how he has taken to Arnaut Danjuma, who too boasts a similar profile as a trickster capable of playing up front or off the left.

By his own admission, Okoronkwo loves to get the fans off their seats when they come to watch him play, which is suggestive that he is more suited to a wider role. Just last year he gave a glowing account of himself when previewing their FA Youth Cup clash with Sheffield United: "I’m feeling good going into Friday’s match and I think the most important thing in football is to be confident.

“I like to excite. I want to get on the ball and make people smile. I enjoy running with the ball, trying to find my teammates in the best positions and trying to score and assist. I’m loving it at Everton so far. All the players want to win, we’re all striving for the same goal. The coaches are helping us. I just love being around this club.”

Slowly improving with each season, and sure to evolve physically too given his emergence at a higher youth level, the sky really is the limit for the Blyth-born marksman who clearly has pace and trickery in abundance to partner with his cutting edge in front of goal.

However, such is the brutal reality of Everton at the moment, fans will want to hold off on getting too attached to their newest teenage sensation.

Too often in the past have they seen academy stars sold with haste, as the money gets swallowed up into a financial black hole. Although many will know where the finances are headed now, the club must be run with incredible precision as that move-in date nears, with the sale of future academy stars sure to aid in the ease of that stadium switch.

Should he burst into the first-team to aid Dyche's side, or follow a similar path to Cannon, either way he is already taking great strides towards being the club's next breakout star.

Overton out of Boxing Day Test with fractured rib

England have confirmed that Craig Overton is not fit to play in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne after sustaining a fractured rib.Overton, one of England’s relative success stories in another disappointing Ashes campaign, was first hit in the ribs while batting in Adelaide and took a further blow in the same area while diving for a caught and bowled chance in Perth. A subsequent scan showed the crack, though Overton continued to play his part in the rest of the match. With the England medical staff warning that Overton could potentially puncture a lung if he sustained another blow in the same area – and his whole-hearted efforts in the field render that far from unlikely – it has been decided not to risk him in the fourth Test. He must be considered a significant doubt for the Sydney Test, too.Tom Curran, the Surrey seamer, is the most likely beneficiary of Overton’s misfortune. While Curran is no quicker than the rest of the England seam attack, he has a good range of skills – he was the only England bowler to gain any lateral movement on a flat surface at Richardson Park – and the character to suggest he will thrive on such a big occasion. Notably, he produced a fine slower ball to dismiss Chris Gayle in an ODI in Southampton just as the West Indies batsman was threatening to run amok. Tom, aged 22 and the son of former Zimbabwe international Kevin, would be making his Test debut. He is not the only option, though. England could also pick Mark Wood, who is now with the squad and looks to be bowling at sharp pace in the nets. Doubts about his fitness linger, however, and the England management may be reluctant to risk him on a flat surface. The fact that they have been in the field for an average of 160 overs in the first innings of their most recent eight away Tests render them unlikely to take any risks. The other option is Mason Crane. While he would bowl the odd boundary ball – he is a 20-year-old legspinner, after all – he would offer some variety on what is expected to be another flat pitch (“a batting paradise,” was Chris Woakes’ assessment) and, at a ground with a vast playing surface, and as one of two spinners, could afford some protection.A look at the pitch on Saturday appeared to improve Crane’s chances. The England management were surprised how dry it appears and reasoned there may be assistance there for the spinners. They will take another look on Christmas Day before taking any firm decision. But Curran was the most impressive of the support bowlers in the nets. Generating decent pace and gaining enough movement to take an edge or two, he was the one drawing the admiring glances from those who will select the side.Stuart Broad and James Anderson also had a decent bowl. Anderson, as ever really, looked in good rhythm and struck Mark Stoneman with a bouncer at one stage while Broad should have done enough to prove his fitness.

Rangers Could Unearth Dream Cifuentes Partner In "Highly-Rated" Gem

Glasgow Rangers have recently completed their eighth summer signing of the transfer window, managing to lure striker Danilo from Dutch side Feyenoord.

Could signing number nine be just around the corner however? As Michael Beale is looking to further bolster his first team squad ahead of the 2023/24 Premiership campaign.

Are Rangers close to signing Jose Cifuentes?

Fan media outlet Four Lads Had a Dream offered an update on the player, tweeting: “Jose Cifuentes will arrive in Glasgow this midweek, as per multiple previous reports.

Read the latest Rangers transfer news HERE…

“Everything is agreed and in place to join immediately.

“It’s been a long protracted deal but management are excited about this.”

It appears as though signing number nine is basically a done deal and with the Champions League qualifiers just around the corner, it could be a wise move for Beale to bring in the Ecuadorian this summer as supposed to January 2024, when his Los Angeles FC contract expires.

How good is Jose Cifuentes?

The midfielder enjoyed a productive 2022 MLS season for LAFC, ranking second in the squad for big chances created (11), while also ranking third for successful dribbles (1.5) and tackles (1.8) per game, suggesting that he could offer both attacking and defensive qualities to the Rangers midfield.

With Glen Kamara looking likely to leave this summer and Ryan Jack out of contract at the end of the season, Cifuentes could form a solid partnership with Nicolas Raskin in the heart of the midfield.

Could Beale perhaps have a dream future partner for the talented 24-year-old however? As Cole McKinnon shone for Partick Thistle whilst on loan last term.

Who is Cole McKinnon?

The 20-year-old has already made his senior debut for the Ibrox side, featuring against Hearts on the final day of the 2021/22 campaign, even managing to score a goal, giving the supporters a glimpse of his vast talents.

Following that impressive cameo, he joined Partick on a season long loan deal and journalist Jordan Campbell praised him, saying: “Understand Rangers midfielder Cole McKinnon, who signed a new three-year deal yesterday, is expected to join Partick Thistle on loan.

“The 19-year-old is highly rated at Ibrox and scored in the final league game of last season. Goes box-to-box and has a knack of getting a goal.”

Ecuador midfielderJose Cifuentes.

The youngster certainly took his chance during his stint in the Championship, featuring 31 times across all competitions and even registering six goal contributions – three goals and three assists – which is a solid return from the centre of midfield.

McKinnon looks like he could add a reliable goal threat from the midfield and would compliment Cifutenes well, who has displayed a tenacious nature during his spell at LAFC and enjoys winning the physical battles in the middle of the pitch.

The Gers prodigy has also been capped for the Scotland U21 side, making two appearances and the future is clearly bright for him, at both club and national level.

Another loan spell, this time at a club in the Premiership, would certainly stand him in good stead should he aim to challenge for a spot next to Cifuentes in the Gers midfield in the years to come.

Man United Agree Fee To Sell "Terrific" Player

Manchester United have agreed a £30m fee to sell defender Harry Maguire, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Is Harry Maguire leaving Man United?

The Red Devils and Erik ten Hag have been productive in the transfer market so far this summer, making three big-money signings.

Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund have all put pen to paper at Old Trafford, joining from Chelsea, Inter Milan and Atalanta respectively. There could well be more to come before the September 1 deadline, however, further arrivals could depend on player sales.

Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat and Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo are among the club’s next targets, however, reports have stated that they need to sell first. Midfielders Donny van de Beek and Fred could be among those to leave, whereas Maguire has also been heavily linked with an exit.

Read the latest Man United transfer news HERE…

West Ham have been showing a real interest in the defender and had a £20m offer turned down towards the end of July, but it looks as if a fee has now been agreed.

According to Football Insider in the last 24 hours, the Red Devils and the Hammers were close to agreeing a fee worth almost £40m for the 30-year-old.

The report claims that talks have ‘majorly moved forward’ and that West Ham are also in talks to sign Scott McTominay, although a move for Maguire is further forward.

Since then, it has been reported by Romano that a £30m agreement in principle has been reached between the two clubs for Maguire.

"West Ham have reached an agreement in principle with Manchester United for Harry Maguire on £30m fee. The verbal agreement is subject to final, key points on deal structure still under discussion but fee now agreed, as per Sky. Personal terms, to be discussed soon."

How good is Harry Maguire?

Maguire may have had his critics in recent years, however, he has also received praise. In total, the centre-back has made 175 appearances for the Red Devils after joining in 2019, however, just 16 of those came in the top flight during Ten Hag’s first season in charge.

Ten Hag did hail the centre-back against Everton back in April, though, saying:

"Maguire was dominating, dictating. This is a different Harry to what I've seen in the first weeks and months. He's taking so much initiative, dominating his opponent, stepping in, bringing passes. So a really great performance."

Meanwhile, John Stones also praised the player last season at the World Cup in Qatar, saying:

"Right from the first game, it was the best response to what he's been going through. All three games he's played he's been terrific. It's about us finding that partnership again, whoever we play alongside, and now it's time for us to keep building.”

As per FBref, the centre-back has actually impressed statistically over the past 12 months. He ranks in the top 2% for dribblers tackled, top 9% for aerial duels won and has lost just 0.09 challenges per 90. On the ball, Maguire has also been a relatively solid performer, ranking in the 82nd percentile for passes attempted and 79th percentile for passes completed.

However, with Ten Hag leaning towards Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his first-choice pairing and taking the captaincy away from Maguire this summer, a move away could be best for all parties, and recouping around £40m could be seen as a shrewd piece of business.

Celtic: Rodgers Can Sign Sinclair 2.0 In "Tricky" 5 Ft 10 Dynamo At Parkhead

Celtic kicked off their pre-season tour of Japan with a goal-infested 6-4 defeat to Yokohama F. Marinos on Wednesday, as Daizen Maeda scored a hat-trick and David Turnbull chipped in with a goal.

However, none of the club's new signings were able to make an appearance.

Marco Tilio is set to miss the start of the season, Odin Thiago Holm was not involved, and Hyun-jun Yang is yet to be officially confirmed by the Hoops.

Celtic transfer news – Mohamed Elyounoussi

Bhoys boss Brendan Rodgers still has plenty of time left in pre-season to test out the fresh arrivals and there could be more to come before the end of the summer transfer window.

One player who could be on their way to Glasgow prior to September's deadline is Norway international Mohamed Elyounoussi, who is currently a free agent after his departure from Southampton at the end of last month.

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph recently suggested, in an interview with GIVEMESPORT, that the Hoops could hold talks with the winger over a possible return to Parkhead.

How good is Mohamed Elyounoussi?

The 28-year-old marksman enjoyed an excellent spell on loan with Celtic earlier in his career and his form for Neil Lennon's side during the 2020/21 campaign suggests that he is good enough to be an excellent signing for the club.

Elyounoussi played the majority of his matches as a left-winger in a 4-2-3-1 system for former Hoops coach and caught the eye with ten goals and four assists in 21 Scottish Premiership starts.

Former Southampton winger Mohamed Elyounoussi.

With this in mind, he could be Rodgers' next version of Scott Sinclair, who enjoyed a terrific time in that position for the Northern Irish tactician at both Swansea and in Glasgow.

The English forward made 238 competitive appearances for the manager of both clubs combined and chipped in with 95 goals alongside 50 assists, which works out as a direct contribution every 1.64 matches on average.

During his final season at Paradise with Rodgers, Sinclair racked up nine goals and three assists in 28 Premiership clashes throughout the 2018/19 campaign, which was less impressive than the possible new signing's last campaign in Scotland.

Elyounoussi produced 24 goals and 14 assists in 67 outings for Celtic in all competitions across his 18 months on loan. This is an average of one goal involvement every 1.76 games and shows that the Norwegian dynamo is capable of being a consistent attacking threat.

The former Southampton whiz, who was once described as a "tricky" player by the aforementioned Joseph, is a proven Premiership performer who would not have to adapt to football in Scotland, which could allow him to hit the ground running without needing a period of adjustment.

Therefore, the talented ace, who scored once in 33 Premier League matches last term, could be an excellent addition to the squad this summer to bolster the attacking options at Rodgers' disposal.

Liel Abada (ten) and Jota (11) were the only wingers to hit double figures for league goals during the 2022/23 campaign and the latter has since left to join Al Ittihad.

This suggests that Elyounoussi's proven ability to score consistently at that level, at a similar rate to Sinclair's production under Rodgers for Swansea and Celtic, would come as a welcome boost to the club to replace the goals that they have lost through the Portuguese flyer's departure.
