Tymal Mills ruled out of T20 World Cup with thigh strain

Cruel blow for left-arm quick as Reece Topley steps into England squad

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Nov-2021Tymal Mills has been ruled out of the T20 World Cup, with Reece Topley taking his place in the 15-man squad.Mills, England’s joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, left the field midway through his second over against Sri Lanka in Sharjah on Monday, immediately calling for a substitute fielder, Sam Billings, to replace him before heading straight to the dressing room.He subsequently underwent a scan which confirmed a right thigh strain, a similar injury to the one he sustained in 2018, which also ruled him out of the rest of that English season. It is a cruel blow for Mills, 29, who has been dogged by injury throughout his career – including a degenerative back condition that he feared would end his career prematurely and which led to him wearing a back brace for three months last winter after suffering a stress fracture. He subsequently tweeted that he was “gutted” to miss the rest of the campaign, but that he would do his utmost to fight back to fitness once more.

His appearances at the T20 World Cup had been his first for his country since February 2017, and came about after a long-term elbow injury to Jofra Archer had left England seeking a dependable white-ball quick to fill a massive gap in their plans.Mills had started the tournament brightly with figures of 2 for 17 against West Indies and 3 for 27 against Bangladesh, and though he was more expensive against Australia and Sri Lanka, his pace, left-arm angle and ability to bowl through the middle and at the death helped him balance England’s attack. All told he has claimed seven wickets at 15.42 in his four matches, at an economy-rate of 8.00.Mills’ absence left England short on death-bowling options against Sri Lanka, other than Chris Jordan, with Tom Curran the only unused squad member who bowls a high percentage of his overs at the end of an innings. Any of Curran, Mark Wood and David Willey could replace Mills in a straight swap, or England may consider rebalancing their side, leaving out a batter and bringing in two seamers to give them more options with the ball.Topley, who has been in the UAE as a travelling reserve, will step up to the main squad immediately, and could be in contention to play in England’s final group game against South Africa. He too has been plagued by injuries since his appearance at the last T20 World Cup in 2016, but his pace and left-arm angle replicates that of Mills, and gives England another pace option to go alongside the existing alternatives.

Haris Sohail out of England tour with hamstring injury

Haris Sohail has been ruled out of the England tour with a grade 3 hamstring injury and will return to Lahore by the first available flight to undergo a four-week rehabilitation programme at the high performance centre. He was meant to make a comeback in ODIs after he was dropped last year after the Zimbabwe series.Pakistan have not named a replacement because they are carrying a large squad and have the options of Sohaib Maqsood, Saud Shakeel and Agha Salman to fill in.Sohail was dropped from the Test side as well after the New Zealand tour earlier this year and since then he only played four List A games – for Balochistan – in January. He scored an unbeaten century in four games in the Pakistan Cup, scoring 164 runs but he missed a big chunk of the tournament when he was in New Zealand. He was picked for the ODIs in England after missing out in the series against South Africa.Pakistan landed in England on June 25, started training on June 28, and Sohail complained about a strain in his leg muscle after two net sessions. He pulled out of the first intra-squad practice game on July 1 and later missed the second one as well. An MRI scan on Wednesday confirmed he had a tear in his hamstring. The PCB said he sustained the injury during a training session in Derby last week.”I was keenly looking forward to the ODIs as part of my objective to contribute in the side’s success and also cement my position in the side,” Sohail said after being ruled out of the tour. “I am disappointed that my tour has been cut short, but I will return to Lahore and undergo a rehabilitation programme so that I can fully recover for the 2021-22 season.”Sohail, who made his international debut in 2013, is considered one of the finest batters in Pakistan but was never able to cement his place. In 2015, he was “spooked” in his Christchurch hotel room and he returned home without playing for Pakistan after the frightful experience.Earlier this year he was named in the Test squad for New Zealand, but he missed the training sessions and practice match owing to a thumb injury. He later turned up to play both the Tests and scored 3, 9, 1 and 15 before being dropped across formats. In the last eight years, he has played 16 Tests (847 runs at 32.57), 42 ODIs (1685 at 46.80) and 14 T20Is (210 at 19.09, strike rate of 102.94).Last year he pulled out of the England tour due to the Covid-19 pandemic as he decided not to stay in isolation, which was a mandatory quarantine period for all foreigners travelling to the UK.Pakistan’s three-match ODI series begins later today in Cardiff, which will be followed by three T20Is on July 16, 18 and 20. The side will depart for the West Indies on July 21 where they will play five T20Is and two Tests from July 27 to August 24.

Internal talks: Arsenal weigh up £34m D-day signing as Sterling upgrade

Arsenal are poised to battle it out for the Premier League title once again, and while Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino have been signed, the frontline needs some work before the day is done.

Emile Smith Rowe has joined Fulham while Eddie Nketiah is closing on a £30m transfer to Crystal Palace; Fabio Vieira has also re-joined Porto on loan. Mikel Arteta boasts one of the most talented teams in Europe, but surely some added depth is needed to fire across all cylinders over the coming campaign.

Arsenal transfer news

As per ESPN, Arsenal are holding internal talks over whether to strengthen their frontline before the transfer deadline this evening, with Chelsea's Raheem Sterling offered Arteta's way.

The England international, as Fabrizio Romano also reports, is at the core of late-stage discussions in north London to determine a possible transfer, but with Manchester United also interested, Arsenal are also weighing up an alternative option.

However, Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman is also an option and could be the perfect alternative, with the German giants hoping to collect a €40m (£34m) fee for the 28-year-old.

Why Arsenal should sign Kingsley Coman

Coman has led a storied career, draped in hordes of silverware, and while he has a lucrative offer from the Saudi Pro League, he might feel that he wishes to try his foot in the Premier League.

Bayern wish to get the versatile winger off the wage bill but that certainly does not mean that he is past his sell-by date, carrying athletic and creative properties that could see him thrive among Arteta's squad.

And while his injury record leaves something to be desired, Coman would not be expected to shoulder a hefty workload, for Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and co all compete for starring spots in the Gunners' starting team.

Sterling might be a decorated Premier League icon, but the 29-year-old has not been brilliant since transferring to Chelsea for £47.5m two years ago, scoring just 19 goals and adding 12 assists across 81 matches. It's not a bad haul but still a regression from his Manchester City days.

His underlying metrics are also not the best, with Coman outperforming him across a sweep of ball-playing and ball-carrying statistics, which suggests that Arteta's dynamic project might find better use of the Frenchman's qualities.

As the statistical analysis shows, Coman has outstripped Sterling across every aspect, highlighting the gains that could be found from adding him to the Arsenal accord.

His former coach Patrick Gonfalone has even said: “His reading of the game and his technique stand out and make him formidable." Such traits would go down a treat at the Emirates.

Arteta, having parted with several stars, will need to sign someone before the transfer window concludes, ensuring that the frontline is in a fitting condition to charge across multiple fronts this year.

Bove will undergo tests to determine whether he suffers from an underlying cardiac issue, according to . Should the examinations determine that he needs to be fitted with a defribillator, the midfielder's career in Serie A would be over due to top-flight rules in Italy preventing players from competing with implanted heart-starting devices. Furthermore, players are banned at both amateur and professional level if they have any significant heart abnormalities. Spurs could smash transfer record to sign "terrifying" Richarlison upgrade

It's set to be an incredibly important summer for Tottenham Hotspur this year as Daniel Levy and Co hunt out the best players to help support Ange Postecoglou's lofty ambitions in North London.

The Australian endured a mixed debut campaign with the club, but with Europa League football secured, there were more positives than negatives.

That said, with six teams scoring more goals than them last season, there is clearly some room for improvement up top, and based on recent reports, they may well get that improvement.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou.

The latest player touted for a move to N17 would be a seismic signing, breaking the club's transfer record and signalling to the rest of the league that they mean business – although it might not be great news for Richarlison.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Sky Sports, Tottenham have made signing a new, versatile forward a 'priority' this summer and have identified RB Leipzig's Loïs Openda as a potential target.

RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda.

The report claims that no bids or offers have been made thus far and does not mention a potential price, but another report from Caught Offside earlier this year revealed that the German club have placed a massive €100m price tag on the player's head this summer, which converts to around £84m.

This enormous price is due partly to his impressive form but also because he has a €80m release clause – £68m – which will kick in next summer.

RB Leipzig striker Lois Openda.

It would be an extraordinary transfer to get over the line, but Spurs have plenty of money to spend, and if they want to help Postecoglou realise his aims in the coming season, then signing Openda would go a long way in doing that, even if it spells trouble for Richarlison.

How Openda compares to Richarlison

If Spurs are able to acquire Openda this summer, his primary competition for the striker role in Postecoglou's team would be Richarlison. But how do the pair compare?

Well, from a pure output perspective, it's hardly even a competition at all. In 45 appearances last season, the "terrifying" Belgian marksman, as journalist Seb Stafford-Bloor dubbed him, scored 28 goals and provided seven assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.28 games for Leipzig.

In comparison, the Lilywhites' Brazilian striker scored 12 goals and provided four assists in 31 appearances, and while that is still an impressive rate of return, his average of a goal involvement every 1.93 games is notably worse than the man who could replace him.

Okay, so what about what's going on under the hood then?

Does the former RC Lens gem also boast superior underlying numbers? Unfortunately for the former Everton ace, the answer is a resounding yes.

Ultimately, Richarlison is a talented player, but over the last two seasons, he just hasn't shown enough to suggest he's the striker to take Spurs forward, and while Openda will cost a King's ransom, his performances last season and underlying numbers indicate he'd be more than worth it.

Langer: Steven Smith coaches himself and I'm sure he'll work it out

From Australia’s point of view, now would be a good time for Steven Smith to find his hands for the second time this season. The last time he did, during a quarantine training session in Sydney during his 14-day isolation following the IPL, he followed it with back-to-back hundreds off 62 balls in the first two ODIs.It has been a different story in the first two Test matches with completed innings of 1, 0 and 8 in Adelaide and Melbourne. He was unbeaten in a brief stay in the run chase in the first Test, but if he’s dismissed for single figures in the first innings at the SCG, it will be just the second time he has made three in a row – the other being a run of four during the 2015 Ashes.Related

  • India on notice: Steven Smith 'finds his hands' again after disappointing IPL

Since his comeback to Test cricket in the 2019 Ashes, he had only failed to reach double figures in two of his 14 innings: the first innings in Brisbane against Pakistan when he came in at 351 for 2 and the second innings against New Zealand at the MCG when Australia were setting up a declaration.Any discussion about Smith’s form needs a big dose of perspective as well: he is still averaging 61.33, second behind Don Bradman if the cut-off is more than 20 Tests. However, though it’s skewed by him missing the whole 2018-19 season, his last Test century in Australia was December 2017 against England at the MCG.It was hard work last summer against New Zealand, and especially Neil Wagner, although he still found a way to grind out important runs in the three Tests. This season, the India attack in the first two Tests have had a hold over him few have managed.R Ashwin has been key to this, having him caught at slip in the first innings in Adelaide and then taken at leg slip at the MCG. That was followed by having his leg stump clipped by Jasprit Bumrah when he moved too far across to the off side. It’s a tactic many have used before, only to see the ball worked away for runs into the leg side; India have so far suffocated that route as well although Smith is not alone in that.”Imagine how good we’ll be when he does starting batting well,” Australia head coach Justin Langer said with typical exuberance. “That’s how I look at it. He hasn’t had the best of series so far, he’ll be the first to admit that. But my gosh, what I know about great players is the longer they miss out, the sooner it is that they’re coming good again. So that puts a big smile on my face.”During Australia’s training session at the SCG on Tuesday, Langer briefly positioned himself behind Smith’s net. But he wasn’t there for long, soon at the bowler’s end of the net containing David Warner and Will Pucovski. Perhaps he had already seen enough and was content to move onto more pressing issues.”I don’t coach Steve Smith. Steve Smith coaches himself and I’m sure he’s going to work it out,” Langer said before training when asked if Smith’s form dip provided a coaching challenge. “He is a great player and I can’t wait to watch him bat this Test match and the next Test match.”This Test series was Smith’s first first-class cricket since the Test series against New Zealand which ended in the first week of January 2020. He was at the IPL when the early-season Sheffield Shield matches were taking place and did not feature in either of the Australia A matches before the Test series so his training, which also involved having to prepare for a pink-ball Test, has all been nets or at most simulated middle practice.”Stevey’s always hitting a lot of balls, he did a lot leading up to it, but there’s nothing, even for the greatest of players, that replaces time in the middle and we know what a great problem solver he is,” Langer said. There is every chance that Smith will come good over the next two Tests, but his low returns in the first half of the series created a perfect storm scenario for Australia. Their best batsman was low on runs, their other leading batsman, David Warner, was injured, another opener was out of form, and they had a debutant at No. 6.It didn’t cost them in Adelaide as Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood cut India down for 36, but they couldn’t get away with it twice as they made totals of 195 and 200 in Melbourne. India have not been full of runs, but their victory was anchored around a defining century by Ajinkya Rahane. Australia’s current high score is Tim Paine’s 73 and, to highlight a longer-term trend, their highest score in the last two series against India is Marcus Harris’ 79 made at the SCG two years ago.”There’s plenty of batting talent in Australia,” Langer said. “Obviously we are addressing the issues, any time in Test cricket you are not scoring over 200 you are looking for ways to improve. You have got to look at our strategies against the Indian spinners, Ashwin’s bowled very well, we’ve worked hard on that the last week or so. Bumrah is a world class bowler and [Mohammed] Siraj coming in, I think he’s very, very skillful and I thought he bowled very well for his debut.”It’s been a bowlers’ series so far and it may remain that way, but if Australia want to come out on top a batsman or two will need to stand up. Whether Smith can break free of India’s hold may be a deciding factor.
