West Ham transfer update shared on Danny Ings exit ahead of January

West Ham United, as the January transfer window approaches, could be one of a number of sides that look to make season-altering additions in the Premier League.

The Hammers have enjoyed a solid first half to the campaign, albeit one that has featured a couple of results to forget and sit as high as ninth. Having recently been smashed 5-0 by Fulham, West Ham were given a reminder about the changes they may need to make in the winter window, with a number of stars potentially heading for the exit door. And that could even include a player that David Moyes is a fan of.

West Ham transfer news

Those at the London Stadium got things fairly spot on in the summer transfer window, despite selling Declan Rice to Arsenal. The likes of Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse and Mohammed Kudus have all found their feet relatively quickly to hand the Hammers a major boost. Now, however, West Ham's attention looks set to shift towards departures, which could include the sale of one specific forward who has struggled at times in the current campaign.

The Guinea international is a top target for Moyes.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 16, 2023

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, West Ham could now be ready to sell Danny Ings in the January transfer window, with clubs at the bottom of the Premier League and top of the Championship keeping an eye on the former Liverpool man's situation. The striker's departure could come despite the fact that a source told Football Insider that Moyes is a "big fan" of Ings. When the January window swings open, the 31-year-old certainly looks like one to keep an eye on, as the club aim to make room and raise funds for further incomings.

January the right time for "brilliant" Ings to leave West Ham

Whilst Moyes is reportedly a fan of Ings, January appears to be the right time for all parties to go their separate ways. Ings' goals just have not arrived at the London Stadium, with the former Southampton star finding the back of the net just three times in 37 appearances for the Hammers, whilst only recording a further two assists. Given that he's only made one Premier League start in the current campaign too, the forward could do with a January exit.

danny-ings-premier-league-everton-deadline-day-transfers

If his next club can get him back to his best, then Ings could make a significant impact. Matty Cash was certainly impressed with his former teammate at Aston Villa, saying:

“I was delighted for Danny. He is one of the smartest players I have played with. His record speaks for itself. He’s scored goals at the highest level. Any striker needs goals and he got them at Brighton. His movement in front of goal is brilliant. He knows when to run and when to get in the middle of the goal. That is why he has scored so many goals in his career. Any striker needs to watch him and his movement because he is brilliant.”

McKennie and Co. had to dig deep in order to get over the line, with Tim Weah also figuring for Juve off the bench – allowing him to land a first piece of silverware with the Turin giants. Understandably, there were wild scenes of celebration at the final whistle.

  • WHAT MCKENNIE SAID

McKennie has seen questions asked of his future in Italy, as he approaches the final year of his current contract, but he appears to have offered a nod towards staying on at the Allianz Stadium. After savouring Coppa Italia glory for the second time in his career, the 25-year-old posted on social media: “Not the first time and not the last time.”

That bold statement would appear to suggest that McKennie intends on sticking around and chasing down more major honours with Juve. Carey fifty, Rashid three-for hands Strikers opening-day win

Winning is a habit, and Adelaide Strikers aren’t kicking it anytime soon. The reigning champions started their title defence in emphatic style with a five-wicket victory over Brisbane Heat, built on the back of another stunning spell from Rashid Khan and a dazzling knock from Alex Carey. The match was marred by some bizarre umpiring, with James Pattinson incorrectly given run out by the TV umpire before the Strikers withdrew the appeal, and Carey admitted he nicked a ball to the keeper after being given not out on 52.Rashid decimated the Heat’s batting line-up in conjunction with crafty spells from Peter Siddle and Ben Laughlin. At one stage, the hosts were 9 for 101 before Mujeeb Ur Rahman made 27 off 22 balls, a record for No. 11 in T20 cricket to push the total to 146.Strikers made a blistering start to the chase and though there were some wobbles Carey went deep enough before Jon Wells finished the job. When too many gimmicks might be too muchThe BBL is supposed to be one of the best T20 leagues in all of professional cricket. The opening night of the new season featured a toss of a bat instead of a coin. At one stage there were three players mic’d up on the field at once talking to two different television broadcasters and the whole ground descended in darkness during the innings break to allow for a fireworks display. So when the TV umpire incorrectly adjudicated a run out as ‘out’ that every person at the ground, at home, and around the world could see was clearly not out, you could be forgiven for wondering how serious this tournament is.Pattinson dived to beat a throw from Peter Siddle in the 13th over as the Heat were struggling at 6 for 92. Replays showed him clearly making his ground, but the signal coming down from umpire Greg Davidson was out. After much confusion, Strikers bowler Ben Laughlin inquired with his captain Colin Ingram as to whether they could withdraw the appeal. Ingram checked with on-field umpire Simon Fry and then recalled Pattinson. He only lasted seven balls for four runs before being stumped by Carey from the bowling of Matthew Short.Matthew Hayden does the first ever bat toss in the Big Bash League•Getty Images

Rashid’s worldThe Bash Brothers failed to fire after being sent in and the Heat combusted. Brendon McCullum hit the first ball for four and the second straight up the in the air to be caught by the wicketkeeper. Chris Lynn clubbed 33 from 20 balls including a six and a four off Rashid in the fifth over, but he was knocked over by Peter Siddle with four balls left in the Powerplay. The Heat slumped to 9 for 101 with 31 balls left. Rashid claimed 3 for 9 in three overs post the Powerplay. Equally startling was that he bowled 14 dot balls on a batsman’s paradise. He undid Ben Cutting with extra bounce as the batsman holed out sweeping. He completely bamboozled Mark Steketee and Mitch Swepson in his last over with trademark wrong ‘uns. He was unstoppable and as a result, so were the Strikers.Mujeeb makes historyMujeeb, on debut in the BBL, walked out at No.11 having never made more than 16 in any of his previous 28 innings in professional cricket. He wandered all around the crease and played all sorts of mad strokes including several attempted reverse hooks off the express pace of Billy Stanlake. But he mustered 27 off 22 balls, including three boundaries, the highest-ever score by a No.11 in T20 cricket. Mujeeb and Peirson put on 45 for the last wicket before Mujeeb fell with two balls left in the innings.Carey cool, calm and collectedThe Strikers batting relies heavily on their opening combination and Carey and Jake Weatherald picked up where they left off last season. They cracked 56 in 5.3 overs before Weatherald fell to reduce the required rate to a meagre 6.53.Carey was savage in the Powerplay. He took Steketee for 16 in three balls with simple clean striking and added another six off Joe Burns. Heat youngster Max Bryant dropped Weatherald in the second over which proved costly from a partnership perspective. Carey too was fortunate to survive a caught behind in the 11th over off the legspinner Swepson. He launched the next ball for six and added 18 more to his total before Swepson finally got his revenge. The Strikers still needed 39 from 36 balls but Wells made a very composed and unbeaten 24 to secure the victory with five balls to spare.

Debutant Ajaz Patel scripts stunning four-run win for New Zealand

1:22

Ajaz Patel: teenage left-arm seamer to Test-grade left-arm spinner

In the pantheon of infamous Pakistan implosions, this must rank right around the top. Pakistan were cantering to a victory around lunchtime, courtesy Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali, and the wicket of Shafiq off the last ball before lunch seemed no more than an inconsequential irritant. But New Zealand, blindly, illogically, unreasonably, refused to write off this match as a lost cause, compelling Pakistan to believe the game was still on, the pressure all theirs to bear. And somewhere along the line in the middle session, Pakistan were convinced. New Zealand had won that game of poker, and, in the process, set the wheels in motion for a four-run victory, their narrowest Test win in history, and surely one of their most gratifying ones. After lunch, Babar Azam lost his head and ran for a single his partner was least interested in, and just like that the panic set in. Sarfraz Ahmed, woefully short of confidence, edged a sweep – a shot that once was a strength but now appears to be a crutch. The tail was in, and the shots they played soon turned the panic into complete hysteria. Even as Pakistan lost their heads, New Zealand kept theirs. Azhar Ali was running out of partners without quite having the belief to take the game into his own hands, and he tried to inch Pakistan to victory with No. 11 Mohammad Abbas in tow. But, having blown their chance to waltz through the door, Pakistan soon found the back door slammed shut too by a New Zealand side playing their first Test cricket in over seven months.New Zealand’s indomitable spirit played a massive part in how they sneaked home in one of the most unlikely comebacks of all time, but the inquisition from Pakistan is destined to be punitive. There was so much to take issue with in the approach to the target, a small target by lunch. These were professional cricketers and with the finishing line almost reaching out in embrace, they forgot how to run. Strategies were thrown out of the window, composure tossed aside in the frenzy. Babar and Sarfraz may be the most disappointed in the manner of their dismissals, but the lower order could have few excuses too.Bilal Asif tried to swing Patel into Dubai with an ugly hoick, with Azhar Ali at the other end, handing New Zealand the seventh wicket as the possibility of defeat became a probability for the first time. Azhar, too, was guilty of sensing the moment far too late, only properly farming the strike when he was with Abbas.Hasan Ali may receive the brunt of the blame; Pakistan cricket does like a scapegoat or two. He was the one who decided to go into T20 mode, hoicking Patel to deep midwicket with his side needing 12 runs. Eighteen months ago, Pakistan made Shannon Gabriel the butt of many jokes when the No. 11 tried to sweep Yasir Shah when a defensive block would have given senior partner Roston Chase the strike for the final over and secured a draw. Hasan’s smear was in no way less hare-brained, and in the end equally as costly to Pakistan, condemning them to their narrowest Test defeat.Neil Wagner roars after taking a wicket•AFP

For New Zealand, Patel was the hero and such team spirit exists in their dressing room that it barely registered he had completed a five-wicket haul on debut, when he trapped Azhar Ali in front for the final wicket. It was a compliment to the debutant that he was the man Williamson trusted to spin the side to victory even when Ish Sodhi was in the side, and Patel repaid that in bucketloads. Flighting the ball, controlling the spin, drifting it in, rushing it through, he could do it all. He had Pakistan’s batsmen on a piece of string by the end, and cut the cord just in time to prevent them scrambling their way to safety.Things had looked so different at lunch. Azhar and Shafiq had belatedly appeared to step into the boots of Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan, an 82-run partnership putting Pakistan within touching distance of a 1-0 lead in this series. Coming together with Pakistan at 48 for 3, they had sucked the life out of New Zealand’s hopes.Patel had triggered Pakistan’s slide with a lovely offbreak that came back in and hit the pads quicker than Imam-ul-Haq could cope with, before Sodhi made his impact on the game. A flighted delivery beat Mohammad Hafeez in the air, leaving him spooning a catch to short cover, while Haris Sohail – much as he had first innings, scooped drove a low full toss in the air. Sodhi completed a brilliant, low catch, and the famed Pakistan implosion never far away from the surface came bubbling to the fore once more. But then, Azhar and Shafiq joined hands. Not the Azhar of late, the uncertain, hard hands imposter that has dented his reputation in the past year, but the real thing. He was never rash, but insisted on keeping the runs flowing, eager to play the supporting role to Shafiq who looked so free from pressure you wondered if he really understood the importance of the situation. Sodhi, who had been looking to rip through the Pakistan line-up as spinners do on surfaces like these, suddenly lost his rhythm and couldn’t pitch two consecutive deliveries in the same postcode.Pakistan have had trouble chasing down low totals in the fourth innings recently. Last year in Barbados, they were shot out for 81 in a chase of 187, while at this very ground 13 months ago, Sri Lanka had bowled them out for 114 to deny them a seemingly certain win. They might have been looking to consign those results to musty corners of hidden history today. But, against a side that would not accept they would lose, Pakistan suddenly became a side that refused to believe they were winning.

ECB budget cuts mean overseas programmes are cut

There is not expected to be a reduction in the England Lions programme and it is hoped counties may still send young players overseas

The ECB has confirmed the cancellation of their pace programme and overseas placements. With budgets strained – not least by set-up costs for the new tournament, currently The Hundred – a review of funding was undertaken and the two areas identified as most expendable. The pace programme, which has seen the most promising fast bowlers in domestic cricket given specialist coaching and opportunities to develop, has been criticised not just for its cost but its failure to deliver. Few of the eight seamers who went on it last winter were fit at the start of the 2018 season and one of those who was – Toby Roland-Jones – experienced a recurrence of a stress fracture that ended his season. The last programme saw the bowlers invited to numerous training camps at Loughborough as well as two warm weather training camps in Desert Springs and one two-week one in Potchefstroom. The overseas placements, meanwhile, saw eight promising young players given opportunities to play good level club cricket during the English winter. It was a scheme that sought to benefit young spinners, in particular, and had seen Mason Crane and Matt Parkinson play Grade cricket in Sydney under the watchful eye of Stuart MacGill, while several offspinners – most recently Glamorgan’s Andrew Salter and Hampshire’s Brad Taylor – have been placed with Jeetan Patel in Wellington. Middlesex’s Max Holden and Somerset’s George Bartlett also played club cricket in Perth. It is understood there will be no reduction in the Lions (or Young Lions) commitments – they are to travel to the UAE before Christmas to play Pakistan and tour India after Christmas – and that no redundancies will be made. It is also understood the ECB hopes that counties will continue to arrange overseas placements, but such trips will not be centrally funded.”ECB’s priority over the next 12 months is to ensure our Player Pathway programmes continue to provide the best possible support for England teams ahead of our winter tours, and next summer’s Cricket World Cup and the Ashes,” said an ECB spokesman.”We remain fully committed to developing the Player Pathway and the Performance Centre, and will consider opportunities for further investment in our next financial planning cycle from 2020 onwards.”The timing of the news is intriguing. While it is not long since the ECB announced a lucrative broadcast deal (for the period starting in 2020) and they can expect a large surplus in 2019 – the World Cup profits are expected to be around £50m and it is also an Ashes year – all the signs are the organisation is facing significant financial pressures. They recently published accounts that show their reserves have dropped by around GBP65m in two years. Those reserves – which the ECB say they aim to keep at 40 percent of turnover – were down to GBP8.6m, down from GBP73.1m in 2016.

Man City player ratings vs Man Utd: Fantastic Phil Foden should be in Ballon d'Or contention! Derby-day hero gets misfiring Erling Haaland out of jail yet again

The England midfielder scored another two goals to ensure Pep Guardiola's side came from behind to see off their local rivals

Manchester City might not be playing at their scintillating best at present, but they remain just one point off Premier League leaders Liverpool after Phil Foden inspired the defending champions to come from behind and beat local rivals Manchester United 3-1 on Sunday.

City dominated the early proceedings, but found themselves behind at half-time after Marcus Rashford's stunning eighth-minute strike was followed by an impressive rearguard from the visitors, as well as an incredible close-range miss from Erling Haaland.

But just as he has so many times already this season, it was Foden to the rescue, as he first cut inside to lash a left-footed drive into the top corner from 20 yards, before netting the winner after trading passes with Julian Alvarez. Haaland then added gloss to the scoreline in stoppage-time after United gave the ball away on the edge of their own penalty area.

The win keeps Pep Guardiola's side within touching distance of Liverpool, whom they visit next Sunday in what may now prove to be a title-decider at Anfield.

GOAL rates City's players from the Etihad Stadium…

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Ederson (6/10):

Had no chance with Rashford's stunning strike. Largely a spectator thereafter, but did rush out to challenge Garnacho well shortly before Foden made it 2-1.

    Kyle Walker (7/10):

Did well to track back against Rashford and snuff out counter-attacks on a couple of occasions. Otherwise offered himself as the spare man in attacks on numerous occasions.

    Ruben Dias (5/10):

Potentially could have done better up against Fernandes in the build-up to Rashford's goal, but otherwise his game was limited to keeping the ball ticking over as City built from the back.

    Nathan Ake (4/10):

Played Fernandes onside for the opening goal and never looked wholly comfortable from a defensive point of view.

    Midfield

    John Stones (6/10):

Took up his now usual position in central midfield and kept City ticking over while getting involved physically on the rare occasion the ball was turned over.

    Rodri (7/10):

At the heart of City's best attacks, with Stones' positioning meaning the Spaniard could move further up the pitch for the most part. Tested Onana with a volleyed effort in the first half and got the assist for Haaland's late goal.

    Bernardo Silva (5/10):

Couldn't control the game in the same way he did at Old Trafford earlier in the season. Lacked any real cutting edge to his passing on the edge of the box.

    Kevin De Bruyne (4/10):

Probably his most disappointing performance since returning from injury. United crowded him out for the most part, while to say his finishing was wayward would be kind.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Phil Foden (10/10):

City's best player throughout, and by some distance. Always dangerous in attack, and after twice being denied by Onana in the first half, found the equaliser with a stunning strike after the break. Superb give-and-go with Alvarez then settled it. In the form of his career right now.

    Erling Haaland (5/10):

Not for the first time in recent weeks, the Norwegian missed the target when it looked easier to score from Foden's headed cross late in the first half. Struggled to get fully into the game throughout, but did get his goal in stoppage-time with a well-taken finish.

    Jeremy Doku (4/10):

A box of tricks as usual, but the Belgium winger's final product left a lot to be desired. Replaced by Alvarez before the hour-mark.

    Subs & Manager

    Julian Alvarez (7/10):

Gave City's attack a different dimension after replacing Doku, and provided the all-important assist for Foden's winner.

    Oscar Bobb (N/A):

    On for Foden in stoppage-time.

    Pep Guardiola (7/10):

Can't be blamed for some of the missed chances in the first half, and the introduction of Alvarez meant Bernardo and Foden could then switch flanks and cause confusion. It was Foden popping up on the left that ended up settling the game.
