Shardul Thakur: 'Extremely tough on domestic players to play ten games with three-day gaps'

India allrounder Shardul Thakur has called for longer breaks between Ranji Trophy games to facilitate better recovery and preparation for players, keeping in mind the lengthy nature of the competition. Mumbai, for example, would’ve played 10 first-class games in under 10 weeks should they reach the final.Shardul termed the current schedule – where teams have had just three days between games – as “difficult” with schedules getting “tighter and tighter.””If boys keep playing like this for two more seasons, there will be a lot of injuries across the country,” he said after hitting a maiden first-class century to rescue Mumbai from 106 for 6, as they went on to open up a 207-run lead with one wicket remaining.”Next year, they [the BCCI] have to re-look at it, and give more [of a] break. When I remember playing Ranji Trophy back in the day, good seven to eight years back, [the] first three games used to have [a] three-day break, and then it was [a] four-day break, and knockouts were played [with] five-day breaks.”With the IPL window only getting bigger, the BCCI has had to force-fit all senior men’s competitions over a smaller window than usual. This has led to several prominent first-class cricketers lamenting privately about the relevance of tournaments such as the Duleep Trophy and Deodhar Trophy, the zonal first-class and one-day competitions, which open the domestic season.Injuries aside, teams have also had to grapple with travel fatigue because of this short window. Gujarat, for example, had their flight to New Delhi cancelled the following day after their home fixture against Karnataka in Ahmedabad. Then on the second day, their onward flight to Delhi was delayed, and when they finally arrived in the capital, they were stranded in the airport overnight. It meant driving amid heavy fog to Chandigarh on the third morning which left them with no net sessions prior to the game, which was eventually fogged out.”Now this year, we have seen that all the games have been played [with a] three-day gap. It is extremely tough on domestic players to expect them to play ten games in a row with just three-day gap if [a] team makes it to the finals.”Also, when nine teams were in the group [in the old format], one team would get a break in [the] round-robin system. Now with only eight teams being in one group, everyone plays each other, so that [extra] break has gone now.”Thakur cited Mumbai’s example, while explaining how it was particularly gruelling on fast bowlers. “Yeah, 100% because Mohit [Avasthi] also had an injury in the sixth game.” Avasthi was rested by Mumbai from the league stage contest against Chhattisgarh, believed to have developed a hamstring-related issue.”He played five games in a row. He had a huge workload because Tushar [Deshpande] was also selected for India A,” Thakur said. “He was not available. Dhawal [Kulkarni] was playing alternate games looking at his age and workload. Royston [Dias] is fairly new.”He [Mohit] operated a lot in those first five games, and then he had an injury so he had to miss a game. I think that is because there is not enough spacing between the games.”Tamil Nadu captain and left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore, who has led his side into Ranji Trophy knockouts for the first time in seven years while also crossing the 50-wicket mark this season, agreed with Thakur.”A few players feel the same thing,” Sai Kishore said. “Fast bowlers are extra tired because you travel on one day. For me, I don’t train much because of the three-day thing. I bowl directly match-to-match, so the load on my body is fine. I don’t strain myself in training pre-match. I am managing myself that way, but it should be harder for the fast bowlers.”

Fakhar, bowlers maul Islamabad in PSL's heaviest defeat

In a performance that consolidates Qalandars’ credentials as the favourites to retain this title, United were swept aside by 119 runs

Fakhar Zaman hits out during his innings•PCB

</bIf Lahore Qalandars' thrashing of Islamabad United the first time these sides met this season read like an aberration, Qalandars gave them another one, just for good measure. In an imperious performance that consolidates their credentials as the favourites to retain this title, United were swept aside with disdain in Rawalpindi by 119 runs. It is the heaviest defeat inflicted on any side in PSL history.Fakhar Zaman's 115 in the first innings set them up for an imposing total – 226 is the Qalandars' second-highest score. But after Quetta Gladiators chased down an even bigger score the previous night, a chase felt very realistic. This is where Qalandars' bowlers shone, running riot through Islamabad's storied batting line-up and skittling them out for 107. In the end, Fakhar's individual score was higher than Islamabad's collected final tally, another PSL first. After 240 hadn't proved enough for Peshawar Zalmi the previous night, Lahore's decision to bat first was intrepid, but showed the faith they place in their bowlers, even on a surface like this. The start was wobbly, though, with Abdullah Shafique squeezed down leg in the first over. Crucially, Asif Ali dropped Fakhar Zaman when he was on one, and even as early as that in the game, it was a sliding doors moment. After a tight couple of overs, Fakhar walloped Fazalhaq Farooqi for three boundaries, before plundering 16 in Faheem Ashraf's first over. Despite Kamran Ghulam struggling for rhythm at the other end, he only needed to keep turning the strike over, and Fakhar was happy to do the damage. By the end of the powerplay, Lahore were up to 65.But they knew they needed a huge score against a batting line-up like United's, and they kept going. Fakhar took apart Shadab Khan in a seminal moment of the contest, while Ghulam came to life against Mubasir Khan. And Fakhar continued the onslaught against the United captain in a passage of play where 49 runs came off 14 balls, and the run rate ballooned.Zaman Khan checks on Rahmanullah Gurbaz•PCB

United nailed the Qalandars down after Mohammad Wasim dismissed Ghulam, and briefly even threatened to keep the target around 200. But once Fakhar survived an extremely narrow lbw call – with HawkEye deeming a delivery crashing into the stumps to have pitched fractionally outside leg – he was rejuvenated once more. Alongside Sam Billings, he smashed Wasim for 20 runs in the 16th over, and thereafter United’s death bowling fell apart. He brought up the hundred in that over, and in a blizzard of boundaries Lahore helped themselves to 72 in the final five. The notion almost seems quaint now, but on a Pindi surface that has helped batters out to the extent it has this week, the game wasn’t over then. After seeing off Shaheen Afridi’s first over respectfully, the United machine began to whirr, taking 27 runs off the two following overs. It was Zaman Khan who broke the game open for the Qalandars with the wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who he’d tormented through the over, before finally putting him out of his misery with a short ball. A full delivery shaping away drew the curtain on Colin Munro’s innings, and from thereon it was the Rashid Khan show.Shadab Khan struck one six off him before the Afghan hit back, a top edge removing the United captain cheaply once more. The wickets were falling in clumps now; David Wiese soon got rid of Alex Hales as he miscued a slice right at the keeper. Islamabad United’s own keeper, and middle order talisman Azam Khan, was unavailable following a finger injury he’d picked up in the first innings. In this kind of form, those are big shoes to fill, with the lower middle order hopelessly ill-equipped for the task against bowling of this quality. That skill was crystallised in a glorious Rashid delivery to Mubasir Khan, drifting in around middle and whooshing past the outside edge to trim the outside of off stump. Faheem Ashraf was trapped dead in front, and by now an Islamabad mauling was inevitable. Rashid made it four wickets by cleaning up Asif Ali, and finishing with 4-21 on a surface every other batter had found to be a paradise.Haris Rauf wrapped up the game with the final two wickets in a chastening evening at home for Islamabad to seal a top-two spot for his side. Both of these sides will go through to the playoffs, but on current evidence, the gap between them is a chasm.

Inside Man Utd's new state-of-the-art £50m training ground: Smart urinals to test hydration, a padel court requested by players and underwater treadmills

The Red Devils have finally caught up with their rivals after a year of upheaval at Carrington and GOAL has taken a look inside the revamped facility.

Cristiano Ronaldo sounded the alarm in his final bombshell interview as a Manchester United player and less than three years later the club has heeded the call, unveiling a completely revamped training centre on Friday. And Diogo Dalot believes that his Portugal team-mate and former club companion would be happy with the results. He might even send Ronaldo pictures of the £50m ($67m) makeover, which United firmly believe has brought them into line with their main rivals, if he asks to see it.

"I'm sure he would love it if he would be able to see it. But overall I think the message was clear that this club deserved even more," Dalot told reporters at the opening of the renovated training facility at Carrington. "We've been waiting for a long time at the club, so all credit to Sir Jim and his team. I think they did an unbelievable job and I think finally we're getting to a level where this club deserves and now it's up to us to, on the pitch, also match that standard."

United's players spent last season training at the women's and academy facilities while work was completed on their building but the project was completed on budget and on time, more than a week before the new campaign. Sir Jim Ratcliffe cut the ribbon to open the new facility in a ceremony attended by the whole squad and coaching staff.

Sir Alex Ferguson was also there and he unveiled a plaque to the late Kath Phipps, the club's receptionist who served United for 55 years and in the words of the legendary manager, "this was her life, every day."

As well as honouring the club's past, this was about taking the club into the future. Ratcliffe said: "This is one of the most recognised brands in the world, it stands shoulder to shoulder with Coca-Cola and Apple. The club has to compete at the highest level that is appropriate to the size and history of the club. While a world class training facility won’t take us to that position alone, it is one of the key ingredients in the modern facility. Now we have one."

The facility has been carefully designed to take United back to being the elite club they were when Carrington opened in 2000 – the year after the Red Devils won the treble. In the words of Dalot: "What I like the most is now there's going to be no excuses."

And GOAL has taken a tour of the building, getting an inside view of how players and staff will benefit from the new facilities. And here are the things that stood out the most…

  • Nigel Young/Foster + Partners

Smart urinals in the dressing room

One of the most important areas in the revamped facility is the first team changing room. It is roomier than before and each player has a digital screen in their allotted space showing the agenda for the week. There is more natural light than before, while there is also a private space within the changing room for players to take calls.

Alejandro Garnacho and Antony still have spaces in the changing room despite being up for sale and not currently training with the squad. So too does Jadon Sancho although he does not have a squad number.

The bathrooms within the changing rooms are no usual bathrooms. They contain 'smart' urinals, which can measure whether a player is dehydrated and tell them how much liquid to intake to get back to ideal hydration levels.

There is also a separate changing room for players who are based at the academy but training with the first team and trying to break into Ruben Amorim's side. The likes of Diego Leon, Chido Obi and Sekou Kone will be making use of it until they establish themselves in the team.

    Brighter medical area

A lot of United players have spent significant periods of time recovering from injury recently, with Mason Mount missing big chunks of the campaign and Lisandro Martinez's season being ended in February with a serious knee injury. Andre Onana got injured in the first week of pre-season training although he should be able to face Arsenal on the opening weekend. The good news is that injured players will be able to use vastly improved facilities and a much more welcoming space to nurse their ailments and get back to action.

The previous medical room at Carrington has been described as "a dungeon" but the new area is far brighter, which is designed to improve wellness and help players recover on a psychological level. The medical room is located opposite the training pitches. This is to encourage injured players to get back to action soon although if the sight of watching their team-mates train in front of them is too much, they can pull down the blinds.

Many injured players have tended to conduct their recovery away from the club, often abroad. But the club now hope that the improved facilities will encourage stricken players to get back to full fitness at Carrington.

    Padel court for the players

The players were asked their opinions on what they wanted at the facility and they all decided to petition for a padel court. Many players, in particular Dalot, are keen padel players, as is Amorim and several of his coaches.

The court has not yet been built but once it is finished players will be more likely to want to stay at the training ground after their usual sessions are finished.

    Barber shop & F1 simulator

The players' lounge is a wide open space facing the training pitches, which can be viewed from an outside balcony when the weather is nice as well as through the giant windows. A huge dining area is the main feature of the players' area but there is also a barber shop and a Formula One simulator. The idea is for the players to feel comfortable around the training ground so they want to remain there and bond as a team.

Dalot explained: "Ultimately, we're talking about our second home, which is where we spend the most time after our personal homes with our families. So I think you should be able to feel good once you come in. I think these facilities right now are exactly what we thought it would be and even better."

Dalot, incidentally, was the first player to make use of the barber shop to get a fresh trim.

Kohli leaves South Africa, likely to be back for first Test

Virat Kohli has left South Africa for personal reasons, but is likely to rejoin the Test squad ahead of the Boxing Day Test in Centurion. Kohli didn’t take part in the Indians’ three-day intra-squad match, the only red-ball outing for a number of senior players including captain Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, ahead of the two-Test series.Ruturaj Gaikwad, meanwhile, has been ruled out of the two-Test series because of a finger injury. Abhimanyu Easwaran, who is currently part of the India A squad that is on a shadow tour of South Africa, has been named* as Gaikwad’s replacement as the reserve opener. Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal are likely to continue their partnership at the top of the order, like they did in the Caribbean in July-August, which was India’s most recent Test assignment.Abhimanyu struck an unbeaten 61 on the second day of the practice game in Pretoria before he was retired by the team management. Abhimanyu is expected to feature for India A in the second four-day match against South Africa A, also beginning on December 26, barring any last-minute changes. He will then link up with the national squad ahead of the New Year’s Test in Cape Town.Gaikwad is expected to head back home and to the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. He picked up the injury on the ring finger of his right hand while fielding during the second ODI against South Africa in Gqeberha. In his absence, India handed a debut to Rajat Patidar for the series-deciding final ODI in Paarl, which India won.India’s Test squad has been in preparation for the past four days in Pretoria under Rahul Dravid’s coaching staff. KL Rahul, India’s stand-in ODI captain, and Mukesh Kumar are expected to link up with the Test squad after a day’s rest following the ODI series. Shreyas Iyer, who was also part of the ODI mix, had been released from the squad after the first ODI to prepare for the Tests.Iyer and Rahul will be returning to Test cricket after a prolonged absence. Both of them last featured for India during the Border-Gavaskar series at home against Australia in February. Rahul, who opened in the series, lost his place after the second Test. He missed the subsequent WTC final and the Caribbean tour because of a hamstring injury. He is likely to take over wicketkeeping duties for the Tests. Iyer, too, hasn’t played a first-class game since March, and has been on a steady diet of ODI cricket following his comeback from back surgery. The upcoming series is India’s second assignment in the new WTC cycle for 2023-25. They won the first Test in the Caribbean and were denied an opportunity to win the second by rain.

David Willey: England contract snub was 'final nail in coffin'

Retiring allrounder says he was “upset, angry, disappointed” after not being offered a deal

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Nov-2023David Willey has described not being awarded a central contract by England as “the final nail in the coffin” of his international career, following the announcement of his retirement earlier in the week.Willey, 33, called time on an eight-year England career that had seen him play more than 100 times in the white-ball formats, as well as collecting a T20 World Cup winner’s medal. But speaking to Sky Sports, he admitted to being “upset, angry and disappointed” at being the only member of England’s ODI World Cup squad left out of the batch of contracts for 2023-24 and beyond, saying it had made his decision to retire easier.”That for me was probably the final nail in the coffin really, and made my decision a lot easier,” he said. “These conversations around contracts all happened before we came out. So when we joined up at Lord’s [before flying to India for the ODI World Cup], I knew I was the only one that didn’t have one. It was difficult.Related

Stokes to undergo knee surgery after World Cup and 'hopefully be fine' for India Tests

“I feel with two World Cups in 12 months, knowing my position in the squad, should there be injuries or whatever, I’m a chance and feel like I’m always a chance. I’m not involved in how these [things] are put together, who selects them. I don’t necessarily have to agree with them. But you know, there are decisions that are made and I have to respect them and, and I make decisions based on how I feel around them.”[I was] upset, angry, disappointed. But as I said, I respect their decision. Don’t have to agree with it and it made my decision a lot easier.”Willey has rarely been a default pick for England but battled back into contention after the disappointment of being left out of the 2019 World Cup squad at the last minute, with Jofra Archer parachuted into the side. He was involved in the 2022 T20 World Cup win – although didn’t play a game at the tournament in Australia – having previously been part of the XI beaten in the final of the 2016 event. He has also had to juggle involvement in franchise T20 tournaments with family life and playing for England. Willey has signed up for the ILT20 in January and could be retained for the subsequent IPL, having also appeared in the Big Bash, PSL and SA20.”So over the last six to eight months, the landscape’s changing,” he said. “It’s always been hard for me to make sure I’m in [England] squads and I’ve got no guarantees, and the anxiety leading up to every selection. Then when I am playing, looking over my shoulder, it starts to weigh heavy on you and I’ve done that for a long time now.”I was desperate to play in this World Cup and it was great to be here. But you know all that rolled into one. I just felt I’ve given my all and I don’t think I can to do that anymore.”Having been left out at the start of the ongoing ODI World Cup, Willey has been one of England’s better performers after coming into the side, taking five wickets in three games. But with their World Cup defence effectively over, he decided now was the time to make an announcement on his future.”Towards the back end of the summer, I knew it was always going to be around this time. I knew it was coming. I wasn’t sure what my involvement would be in the white-ball stuff in England before we came. [I] made the side here, and I’ve managed to get into the side and perform.”I just feel that there’s not very many opportunities in cricket to walk away when the time is right for you. And I really wanted to finish my career, whatever my involvement is in these last three games, able to enjoy it, and not carrying the weight of this decision, and looking over my shoulder thinking if I’m not performing, I’m out of the side again”To have played three games …and that game against India, full crowd in a World Cup in India. I walked out to bat there, they were doing a strobe light show, you know, and I thought as I walked down the steps, I thought I’m done.”

Liverpool and FSG make contact to sign new £40m+ forward to replace Nunez

Liverpool have made contact to sign a £40m+ striker instead of the heavily linked Alexander Isak to replace Darwin Nunez this summer.

Liverpool eyeing multiple signings despite successful season

The Reds and Arne Slot may have plenty of work to do this summer, despite being on course to lift the Premier League title in the Dutchman’s first season in charge at Anfield.

Trent Alexander-Arnold looks on course to sign for Real Madrid, whereas Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah are also out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

Sky Sports: Arne Slot holds talks to sign £40m+ "monster" for Liverpool

He’s a top priority for the Dutchman.

Salah has starred in the final third once again, and his brilliance has arguably carried the likes of Diogo Jota and Nunez. Both Jota and Nunez have been linked with Anfield exits of their own this summer, meaning FSG may need to splash the cash on a marquee attacker.

Newcastle star Isak, who scored against the Reds at Wembley earlier this month, has been heavily linked with a move to Merseyside. However, his asking price could be in excess of £100m, and it looks as if Liverpool have identified a cheaper alternative.

Liverpool make contact over £40m+ Joao Pedro move

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool have been in contact with the agents of Brighton & Hove Albion striker Joao Pedro, as Nunez’s Anfield exit is looking ‘increasingly likely’.

Brighton & Hove Albion'sJoaoPedroin action with Manchester City's Ruben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov

The Brazilian has caught the eye of Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain this season, but it is Liverpool who have started preliminary talks over a move to Anfield. The report states that Pedro could cost around €50m (£41.8m), ‘nearly half of what is required for Isak’.

Pedro, 23, made the move to the Seagulls from Watford in 2023 and has gone from strength to strength on the south coast. In total, the forward has made 65 appearances for Brighton, scoring 28 goals and registering 10 assists.

As can be seen, most of his assists in a Brighton shirt have come this season, and he was hailed by Alan Shearer earlier in the campaign after his starring display against Bournemouth.

Shearer said on Pedro: “He was superb today and they just edged it in those forward positions.

“This for me is a brilliant centre-forward goal. The way he follows it up and he is expecting the rebound to get there. He reacts before anyone else does and then he gets his reward. His hold-up play was superb at times when he had to keep hold of the ball and bring his team-mates into play.”

By the looks of things, a Liverpool move for Pedro will be one to keep an eye on, and it’ll be interesting to see if any other interested side make contact over the coming months after Liverpool’s opening talks.

'Many things he didn't understand' – Luis Enrique's 'significant confrontation' with Ousmane Dembele revealed as ex-Barcelona chief reveals 'mistakes' with PSG superstar

Former sporting director Robert Fernandez, who was key in helping the Catalans sign Dembele from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, recently admitted that Barca made many mistakes in the handling of the Frenchman. Fernandez also explained the key difference between Barcelona and PSG boss Luis Enrique's approach with Dembele, highlighting how he unlocked his potential to the maximum at Parc des Princes.

  • WHAT ROBERT FERNANDEZ SAID

Speaking to Fernandez explained why Dembele has thrived at PSG, acknowledging that Barca as a club didn't figure out the best way to deal with him.

"Ousmane came to Barcelona too young and, as soon as he arrived, he suffered a misfortune at Getafe, a hamstring injury that really hurt him. Being so young, there were many things he didn't understand, and we also made mistakes by not knowing how to rectify that situation," he said.

“Barcelona are a club with many interests and many different views among the press and fans. Ousmane was a good player who needed to be given time because he had two injuries. Many things were said at Barcelona that weren't true, like that he went out a lot at night. Then he was often accused of being late to training, but many players arrive late. They are protected. Dembele was very vulnerable at Barcelona; they always waited for him to be seen.”

“Luis Enrique, who deserves all the good things he's getting as a coach, had a significant confrontation a few months ago (with Dembele) because he understood that he could have given him much more than he was, and look at what he's doing now."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Dembele arrived at Barca in a sensational €148 million move from Dortmund in the summer of 2017. However, his time at Camp Nou was constantly hampered by fitness issues, lack of consistency, and rumours of off-field distractions. The 28-year-old didn't justify his outrageous price tag, and his time in Barcelona ended unceremoniously in 2023. PSG signed him that year, and his first season at Parc des Princes was not much different from his previous six in Spain. However, Luis Enrique showcased immense patience and faith, changing his position on the pitch — from a winger to a false nine — which has brought the best out of Dembele and also worked wonders on a collective level, with PSG sweeping all trophies on offer in the 2024-25 season. Now, the attacker is in pole position to be awarded this year's Ballon d'Or.

Arteta has told Arsenal board to sign £150m star with next few weeks "key"

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told the Gunners board to try and sign a marquee player this summer, with this next month described as pivotal in determining whether the Premier League heavyweights can get a deal done.

Andrea Berta agrees Arsenal deal as new director with targets identified

Over the weekend, news surfaced that Arsenal agreed a deal with ex-Atletico Madrid chief Andrea Berta to become their new sporting director.

The 53-year-old left Atletico after 12 fruitful years at the Wanda Metropolitano, and his availability piqued serious interest from Arsenal, who entered negotiations and sought to tempt him with a move to the Emirates.

Following positive talks with the Italian, both Arsenal and Berta shook hands on an agreement for him to succeed Edu Gaspar, following his departure from N5 in November.

This comes as excellent news for Arsenal and Arteta, with Berta expected to immediately get to work on the club’s transfer activity. According to reliable journalist Ben Jacobs, the chief has already identified targets ahead of next season, and one of them is Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.

The Sweden international, who currently stands out as a superstar striker in the Premier League, is enjoying yet another fine season at St James’ Park with 22 goals from 32 appearances in all competitions.

Two of those strikes actually came against Arteta’s side, once in the top flight and another in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, so Arsenal know full well just how dangerous he can be in front of goal.

Newcastle are adopting a firm stance when it comes to selling Isak, though, with some reports suggesting that the Magpies won’t even entertain bids of less than £150 million (Ben Jacobs).

However, Arteta is believed to be a massive fan of Isak, and won’t completely call time on the chase for his signature this summer – despite the many hurdles in Arsenal’s way.

Arteta has told Arsenal to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United

According to a report from Spain, the tactician is more determined than ever to land him.

Indeed, it is believed that Arteta has told the Arsenal board to try and strike a deal for Isak, who has become their main target ahead of next campaign. The club are prepared to mount a challenge for the 25-year-old in response to their manager’s request, and Arsenal believe he could be the player who transforms them into eventual Premier League champions.

As well as this, the next few weeks are apparently “key” when it comes to Isak’s future and a potential move from Arsenal.

Ex-Nigeria international Sunday Oliseh has described the former Real Sociedad star as one of the most exciting and “underrated” players in the division, and there is no arguing Isak’s quality. That being said, it is exactly why Newcastle will come as a major hurdle for Arsenal.

Their demands are set to be extravagant, so Arteta’s side may need to smash their transfer record if they have any hope of reaching an agreement.
