Everton lodge enquiry over "world-class" Harrison upgrade

Everton have come perilously close to losing their ever-present Premier League status in the last couple of years, claiming a couple of last-day victories to preserve their record for another year.

However, in 2023/24, Sean Dyche’s side managed to finish 14 points clear of the relegation zone, despite receiving an eight-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s PSR rules during the previous financial year.

It was a brilliant achievement from Dyche’s side and one that was thoroughly deserved with the Toffees boasting the best defensive record of any side in the division – bar the top three of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Despite the achievement given the circumstances, this summer remains crucial for the club if they are to build on the successful campaign, with new players needed to take Dyche’s side to the next level.

The club have already announced who will be departing Goodison Park this summer – namely Andre Gomes – with the Merseysiders reportedly identifying one player as a replacement for one of the outgoings.

Everton interested in German Bundesliga star

According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Everton are one of five clubs to enquire about the availability of Heidenheim winger Jan-Niklas Beste ahead of the opening of the summer window.

The 25-year-old, who is also subject to interest from Villarreal, Fiorentina, Genoa and Galatasaray, enjoyed an excellent campaign in the Bundesliga during 2023/24, scoring eight and providing 11 assists for his teammates – a tally that was the second-highest in the league that season.

It was Heidenheim’s first time in Germany’s top flight since their reform back in 2007, with Beste one of the players who caught the eye in their staggering eighth-placed finish.

Whilst Plettenberg claims that the winger would like to stay in the Bundesliga, Dyche’s side must try and convince him to move to England, with the club getting a bargain at £8.5m and signing an upgrade on one player in the process.

Why Beste would be an upgrade on Jack Harrison

Attacker Jack Harrison joined Everton on a season-long loan last season after Leeds United’s relegation back to the Championship, with the 27-year-old managing a tally of three goals and three assists in his 29 Premier League outings.

Upon the completion of the 2023/24 campaign, the Toffees announced he would be returning to his parent club, but as a result of Daniel Farke’s side losing in the play-off final, it was reported that they would reconsider another loan move for the one-time England U21 international.

However, with the emergence of the Beste link, the club should avoid another tempora move for Harrison, with the German a clear upgrade on the 27-year-old former loanee.

Beste has averaged 2.8 progressive carries in the Bundesliga this season, also posting a tally of 0.4 assists per 90 – a figure that is four times higher than the Leeds United attacker.

It’s clear that from the table above, Beste is dominant in attacking areas, but, the 25-year-old has also excelled defensively, averaging 2.7 tackles per 90 – a tally that ranks him in the top 1% of all attackers in the Bundesliga for 2023/24.

The “world-class” talent, as described by UEFA B license coach Invert The Wing, has proved his worth in the Bundesliga in recent months and is more than deserving of an opportunity in England’s top flight.

Whilst they may face tough competition for signature, the Toffees must push hard to win the race for his signature if they are to build on what they achieved this season.

Liverpool looking to hijack Man Utd target to sign £80m+ Matip replacement

As Jurgen Klopp's last Liverpool game approaches, so does Joel Matip's after the Reds confirmed that the defender will be leaving upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season.

Liverpool transfer news

It's fitting in many ways that Matip is leaving on a free deal, given that he is likely to go down as one of the best free agents to have ever signed for Liverpool, particularly in the Premier League era. The defender won every major trophy there is to win in English football with his infamous mazy runs from the backline becoming synonymous with Klopp's Liverpool.

Now, Liverpool must find a replacement for those mazy runs and defensive prowess, which has already seen the likes of Goncalo Inacio and Ousmane Diomande steal the headlines. The two Sporting CP defenders have both enjoyed excellent campaigns under once Liverpool-linked Ruben Amorim, but it may not be either of them who Liverpool sign to replace Matip.

"World-class" £200,000-a-week Liverpool star "has offers" for shock move

The Reds may see a familiar face again sooner than they think…

ByTom Cunningham May 17, 2024

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are eyeing a move to sign Antonio Silva in a move that could see the Reds trigger his €100m (£86m) release clause to hijack Manchester United's potential deal. In one move, the Reds could get one over on their rivals and replace Matip with a statement-making arrival from Benfica.

ousmane-diomande-joel-matip-liverpool-opinion

The central defender, who is still just 20 years old, even has the potential to eventually help Liverpool replace Virgil van Dijk in the long-term, whilst alongside the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Jarell Quansah. They may not even have to rely on triggering Silva's hefty release clause too, with Benfica reportedly willing to negotiate a cheaper price in desperate need of easing financial concerns this summer.

"Hero" Silva could kill two birds with one stone

At the top of Liverpool's defensive priority list should be to replace Matip, but with replacing Van Dijk not too far down that list, ticking both off at the same time would certainly be ideal. And at such a young age, Silva has the time and potential to do just that. Described as a "hero" by Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig, he certainly has his fans too.

Beating Manchester United to Silva's signature would certainly be an ideal way for Michael Edwards to kick off his first summer back at Anfield, especially if he can negotiate a cheaper price in the type of move he's become famous for over the years.

With that said, Silva will be one to watch when the summer transfer window swings open and Liverpool look to bolster their defence under Arne Slot.

Arteta must now drop Jesus and unleash “ridiculous” Arsenal star

The Allianz Arena is the next venue for Arsenal to attend, as Bayern Munich welcomes the English side to their back garden on Wednesday evening.

The last time that the Gunners won away at the German giant was in 2013, and a similar scoreline will be needed this time around if they’re to progress into the quarterfinal.

The Champions League anthem had already rung around the Emirates this time last week, when the tie ended in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

Unfortunately, the preparation going into the game hasn’t been ideal, with Aston Villa defeating Mikel Arteta’s side 2-0 last weekend, and therefore, the boss may look to change a few individuals ahead of the season-defining clash.

Gabriel Jesus drops out of the side

Gabriel Jesus hasn’t featured quite as much as anticipated in the Premier League this season, with the Spaniard often opting for Kai Havertz up front.

Nevertheless, the Brazilian has made 22 league appearances, scoring four goals, but despite his best return coming in the Champions League, netting four goals and providing three assists in seven matches, he may not make the starting lineup for this evening.

The former Manchester City star did start at the weekend in the defeat, where he failed to get on the scoresheet for a seventh consecutive game.

With Bayern set to be an even tougher opposition than Villa, particularly when playing at home, it wouldn’t be a surprise for Jesus to drop out of the side completely, even being replaced by a midfielder.

Who will come into the team to play Bayern

Jorginho has been fantastic when featuring for Arsenal this season, playing 22 games in the English top flight and eight in the Champions League.

The Italian has often been drafted into the side ahead of important ties, notably the recent match against Manchester City and the second leg versus Porto.

However, on Wednesday night, the former Chelsea player will once again have an enormous task on his hands, and that is to stop Jamal Musiala from working his magic in the gaps between the midfield and backline.

Last week, the 32-year-old started against the Bundesliga side, and he impressed during his 67 minutes on the field, influencing the side from both an in-possession and an out-of-possession perspective.

Tonight, it may not be Jorginho’s technical ability that makes him so important, but more so his experience of performing on the big occasion, which we’ve seen when Italy won the Euros and when Chelsea lifted the Champions League trophy.

With Bayer Leverkusen knocking Bayern off their perch in the league, the atmosphere could become overwhelming, which suits the level-headed and composed star.

Furthermore, the “ridiculous” midfielder, as labelled by football analyst Ben Mattinson, is extremely composed in possession, often making the right decision and hardly losing the ball, as shown by the earlier table.

However, during the first leg, he also showed his defensive capabilities, making three tackles, one interception, and only being dribbled past once, which is an achievement in itself against the tricky Musiala.

Overall, Arsenal must play as a unit, and Jorginho could just prove to be the glue that keeps the side together. Therefore, he simply has to start alongside Declan Rice.

Arsenal hit the jackpot on "sensational" star who’s worth the same as Rice

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu marshalled the Gunners excellently well last summer to help them have a stellar transfer window. They spent £211m on four players, who have proven to be superb pieces of business for one reason or another.

Arsenal broke their club transfer record to sign Declan Rice from West Ham United for £105m, a deal which has proven to be excellent value for money, despite the large price tag. Many consider Rice to be one of the best number sixes in the Premier League this season.

They also signed David Raya on loan from Brentford and paid a loan fee of £3m. That is a move that is set to be made permanent, with the Bees receiving an extra £27m, meaning Raya will stay in north London for the foreseeable future.

Another excellent piece of business conducted by the Gunners was to bring in Ajax defender Jurrien Timber for £38m. Frustratingly, the Dutchman has been out injured for much of the season, after suffering a right knee injury. With that being said, he is set to return to first-team action before the end of the season.

However, there is one other piece of business conducted by Arsenal last summer that has proven to be an excellent deal for both the club and the player.

Kai Havertz's transfer value at Arsenal in 2024

The player in question here is Germany international Kai Havertz. Arsenal signed Havertz from Chelsea for a fee of £65m, and many were sceptical about the move when it first went through. With that being said, Havterz has been wonderful in recent weeks and has settled in superbly to life in the red side of London.

Since joining the Gunners, Havertz has seen his transfer value skyrocket. According to CIES Football Observatory, the 24-year-old is now valued at £85m, already £20m more than what they paid Chelsea to sign him last summer.

Interestingly, Havertz’s value is one of the highest in the Arsenal squad. His valuation is the same as fellow summer signing Rice, as well as Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli and centre-back William Saliba. Only Bukayo Saka at £171m and Martin Odegaard at £128m are valued higher.

This high estimation is certainly reflective of Havertz’s excellent form in recent months, and both he and his manager Arteta should take credit for that, considering the opinion of many fans when the German signed for the club.

Kai Havertz’s season in numbers

The attacking midfielder's excellent debut season at Arsenal did not necessarily start out in the same vein of form he is ending it in. The German struggled to find his feet at the Emirates Stadium and was at first playing in the midfield role that Granit Xhaka vacated last summer.

Since moving to play as a centre-forward under Arteta throughout the second half of the campaign, he has found his best form in front of goal. Havertz has scored 12 Premier League goals and registered six assists so far. Saka is the only Gunners player with more goal involvements, registering 24 in the Premier League, as per Sofascore.

In fact, Havertz is having one of the best years of his career so far. According to football statistician Statman Dave, this is Havertz’s joint second-best campaign in terms of pure goal involvements. He has equalled his tally from 2019/20, and is now two goal contributions away from equalling his best season, 2018/19.

Havertz is a player clearly rated by Arteta. Following the win against Tottenham, Arteta was full of praise for the German, explaining he was “sensational in every department” after the former Chelsea man managed to claim his first North London Derby goal.

Arsenal midfielder Kai Havertz.

There is little doubt that Arsenal’s signing of the £65m man last summer, orchestrated by Edu, has been a success. The 24-year-old has seen a huge rise in his transfer value, not that he will be leaving Arsenal, and has enjoyed a superb season individually.

He will now be hoping to help spur Arsenal on to win the Premier League.

Kai Havertz's incredible form could spell the end for Arsenal's £68m ace

The supremely gifted star could be the biggest loser from the German’s excellent form.

Chris Silverwood savours 'good headaches' as new-look Test team takes shape

England’s successes are just the first step in a longer journey, says head coach

Chris Silverwood, England’s head coach, has praised his young squad for finishing a rollercoaster Test winter on a high, but insisted that the gains made during a come-from-behind series win in South Africa are only the first step in a “two-year project” that culminates with the next tour of Australia in 2021-22.Victory in Johannesburg capped a dramatic upsurge in form for England’s Test team, which endured a 1-0 series defeat in New Zealand before Christmas before touching rock-bottom in the Boxing Day Test at Centurion, where an illness-ravaged squad were beaten by 107 runs to fall behind in their four-Test series in South Africa. But from that moment on, and as the Benoni sickness bug was gradually shaken out of their systems, Joe Root’s men found their poise with three wins in a row at Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and the Wanderers, where Mark Wood excelled with nine wickets in a fast and furious Player-of-the-Match performance.”It’s been quite a journey since we arrived in South Africa,” Silverwood told Sky Sports. “Obviously to go from the build-up to the first Test, and the result of that first Test, to get to where we are now, is really pleasing.”[The illness in the squad] was tough but you can’t use it as an excuse,” he added. “The one thing it did do, was it pulled us together as a unit. We had a good chat in the dressing room after the first Test, and you could see the determination on the guys’ faces. So I wasn’t surprised when they came out and played as well as they did, but I’m obviously very proud of them.”Given that Silverwood had also flown home early from New Zealand due to a family bereavement, he might have been entitled to wonder what he had signed up for, after taking over from Trevor Bayliss at the end of the English season. But, he insisted, the groundwork that England laid on those flat decks in Mount Maunganui and Hamilton was integral to England’s subsequent success.”We started something in New Zealand, and you can see the blueprint that we said we wanted,” he said. “Big first-innings runs, and we were also learning to take 20 wickets with the Kookaburra ball. So to see it come to fruition – to see some of the youngsters come through and put their hands up, and for the older guys to do the same – is obviously really pleasing.”The success of England’s core of new players was the clear stand-out feature of the series. Dom Sibley’s century at Cape Town helped turn the series, while his opening partnership with Zak Crawley went from strength to strength; Ollie Pope and Dom Bess played integral roles in the Port Elizabeth win, while Sam Curran chipped in with key runs and wickets throughout. But Silverwood was particularly pleased with how England’s variety of batting styles helped to ensure regular 400-plus totals.”To get a batting order that has the ability to get big first-innings runs, you need to create a variation in how they are going to play,” he said. “So you can see the one, two, three we’ve got [Sibley, Crawley and Joe Denly] go about things in their way, which is completely different to how Rooty, [Ben] Stokes, Pope and [Jos] Buttler will go about their business.ALSO READ: Wood’s nine-wicket haul seals England’s 3-1 series win”I think there’s a nice mix of skills in there, which allows us to have a top seven to build big totals, and equally we’ve seen how the lower order can then be entertaining as well. You saw Woody and Broady here [with an 82-run stand for the tenth wicket]. If you build the platform, anything can happen.”Wood’s raw pace was England’s big find in the final two Tests. He managed to play back-to-back matches for the first time since 2017, and gave the impression that a new, extended run-up has taken some of the strain out of an action that previously seemed to invite regular injury setbacks.Silverwood, however, said that England would continue to monitor his fitness on a game-by-game basis, to help ensure that he is able to give his best efforts on the field more regularly. He even hinted that Wood and Jofra Archer, currently labouring with an elbow injury, might be used on a rotational basis in future Test outings.”We will make to make decisions based on what’s best for him,” Silverwood said of Wood. “We will look at how he trains as well, making sure he’s not wasting all his best deliveries in the nets. Whatever he does, he does it 100 percent. So can we tailor his training to make sure that his best effort goes out on the pitch for us, and equally when he needs to rest, we’ll know we’ve got a backup with Jofra and others to come in.””It’s a great headache to have for Rooty as captain and me as head coach,” Silverwood added. “In an ideal situation, we’d like to have two or three fast bowlers kicking around but we don’t have to play them every game. In this Test, Woody comes in and makes an impact, but another day, we can give him a day off because we’ve got Jofra coming in now.”With England’s next tour of Australia looming in just under two years’ time, Silverwood earmarked Jamie Overton and Olly Stone as the types of 90mph back-up with which England will be looking to augment their squad, and compete with the established names, such as James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes.”We’ve got these guys to nurture and bring through in a two-year project, for when we get out there [to Australia],” Silverwood said. “But also we’ve got to look after the guys we’ve got.”As we’ve also seen in this series, your Andersons, your Broads, your Woakeses. I wouldn’t want to dismiss them lightly. Chris has trained so hard all trip. He got his opportunity here and showed once again he’s a class act.”Three members of the victorious squad will get an immediate chance to test themselves in Australian conditions, with confirmation from the ECB that Sibley, Crawley and Bess have been retained in the Lions’ four-day party for games in Hobart, Melbourne and Wollongong next month, ahead of England’s Test tour to Sri Lanka in March.

Sheffield Wednesday dropped a clanger when they signed Seedorf’s teammate

Sheffield Wednesday's transfer business this January ended up galvanising spirits at Hillsborough when the mood was low, with Ike Ugbo entering through the door at breakneck speed on loan to bag six goals from 11 Championship appearances.

Ian Poveda has also been a welcome breath of fresh air as a skilful and daring winger acquired on loan too, but the Owls haven't always been so effective in windows of the past when bringing in new talents.

One notable blunder saw Wednesday think they'd pulled off an almighty coup to sign a former AC Milan man, the player in question lining up alongside the likes of Clarence Seedorf and Filippo Inzaghi previously in his distinguished career before relocating to South Yorkshire in a disastrous switch.

Why Sheffield Wednesday signed Urby Emanuelson

When you cast an eye over the lack of football Urby Emanuelson had played before surprisingly moving to England, it's no real surprise to see that the former Ajax star flopped at Hillsborough.

The Dutchman would only make a combined 33 appearances in total for his previous clubs in Hellas Verona, AS Roma and Atalanta before joining Wednesday in ill-fated circumstances where he would end up becoming a no-show too.

The Owls were simply blinkered by the circles the 5 foot 9 midfielder had found himself in early into his career at Ajax and in Italy, boasting 106 appearances for AC Milan on his resume before everything fell apart in South Yorkshire.

Sourced by Transfermarkt

It must have been a culture shock for Emanuelson adjusting to the demands of Championship football away from the luxuries of playing alongside icons such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, in a move that ultimately saw the versatile Dutchman leave Hillsborough as abruptly as he entered.

Urby Emanuelson's statistics at Sheffield Wednesday

The 5 foot 9 former Rossoneri man was also viewed as a shrewd purchase initially, considering his adaptability saw him, at the San Siro, line up in defence and midfield whenever he was needed to fill gaps.

Wednesday would never see this flexibility from Emanuelson however, who ended up making just one appearance for the Owls before being released at the conclusion of the 2016/17 season.

The ex-Ajax man wouldn't be helped by constant injury issues during his forgettable one-season stay, but considering he donned a Wednesday strip for just one meagre 16-minute run-out, the move has to go down as a colossal flop.

Earning £25k per week that same pitiful campaign according to Capology, which saw him pocket the same healthy pay packet as Fernando Forestieri and nearly double that of a rising Barry Bannan, everyone with connections to the Owls were happy to see Emanuelson and Wednesday inevitably cut ties when it happened.

Emanuelson would go on to patch his career up back in his native Netherlands with FC Utrecht, whilst the Owls were left to learn an invaluable lesson about not wasting money on players who had once graced the limelight a long time ago.

Fast forwarding to the present, Danny Rohl and Co will hope faces such as Ugbo and Poveda stick around past this season to become fully-fledged Wednesday heroes and not forgotten to time much like Emanuelson.

South Africa call up van der Dussen, Pretorius among six uncapped players for England Tests

Beuran Hendricks, Dane Peterson, Pieter Malan and Rudi Second also in line to make their Test debuts

Firdose Moonda16-Dec-2019South Africa have named six uncapped players in their squad for the first two Tests against England, the first of which begins on Boxing Day. Fast bowlers Beuran Hendricks and Dane Paterson, opening batsman Pieter Malan, allrounder Dwaine Pretorius, wicketkeeper-batsman Rudi Second and middle-order batsman Rassie van der Dussen are all in line for a debut.Aidem Markram has also been named in the squad after he had fractured his wrist while on tour on India and hasn’t played since, but Lungi Ngidi, who suffered a Grade 1 hamstring tear ahead of the Mzansi Super League (MSL) playoff, was not considered. The squad includes only a single specialist spinner in Keshav Maharaj, with Dane Piedt and Senuran Muthusamy both left out from the party that toured India. Theunis de Bruyn, the No. 3 batsman, was the biggest casualty from the India whitewash and has been dropped while allrounder Andile Phehlukwayo has been recalled.”The high number of uncapped players coming into the squad is a reflection of our policy to acknowledge players who do well at franchise level and have put their hands up for selection,” Linda Zondi, CSA’s recently reinstated independent selector, said.Paterson is the best example of that. He is second on the list of wicket-takers in the 4-Day Franchise Series, with 18 wickets at 21.55. The leading wicket-taker, Malusi Siboto, was not considered while the third-placed bowler, 19-year-old Gerald Coetzee, suffered a hamstring injury at the Mzansi Super League (MSL) and will play in the Under-19 World Cup instead. Paterson’s competition is likely to be Hendricks, who has only played in two first-class matches this summer and has taken three wickets at 32.33.”Paterson has been the second leading wicket-taker in four-day cricket this season, including a seven-wicket haul in an innings, and we want to go into the Test series with a full arsenal of fast bowlers who have always provided one of our traditional strengths. Beuran Hendricks is also part of this strategy and adds variety to the attack as a left-arm swing bowler,” Zondi said. This means South Africa’s first-choice attack is likely to be made up of familiar names: Rabada, Philander, Maharaj and the recently-capped Anrich Nortje. Paterson and Hendricks could come into the mix if an all-pace attack is considered, especially at the usually spicy Centurion wicket where the first Test will be played.South Africa may also consider a seam-bowling allrounder, which is where Pretorius and Phehlukwayo could be in contention. Pretorius has recovered from a broken hand he suffered during the MSL, and is fit for today’s final. Phehlukwayo, meanwhile, has been a regular white-ball player for South Africa. He has played just four Tests – two against Bangladesh, one against Zimbabwe and one against India – but scored 156 runs in six innings and took five wickets in his three matches for Dolphins this summer. Allrounder Wiaan Mulder, who made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in February, was not considered because of a back injury.South Africa’s bigger conundrum will be in the batting line-up, where everything from Elgar’s opening partner to the middle order is up for debate. Markram has not played any cricket since punching a wall in Pune, but will have a chance to prove his worth in a round of 4-day fixtures starting Thursday. If he doesn’t impress, Malan may come into the reckoning. He lies 10th on the list of run-getters, with 199 runs in six innings at an average of 33.10, identical figures to his younger brother Janneman, who has also been overlooked. At No.3, Zubayr Hamza has been preferred to de Bruyn, who scored 82 runs in five innings in India (one as a concussion substitute) before being dropped. De Bruyn has instead been picked in the South Africa A side that will play England in a warm-up match from Friday, and could make a case for selection during the second half of the Test series. Temba Bavuma will captain the A team, which also includes Reeza Hendricks and Kyle Verreynne, both of whom may consider themselves unlucky to have missed out on the Test squad.ESPNcricinfo LtdVerreynne sits fourth on the first-class run-charts and Hendricks ninth, but van der Dussen is the batsman the selectors have gone with for the first two Tests.Van der Dussen was South Africa’s second-highest run-scorer during the World Cup where he showed remarkable composure. He also hung around the Test squad for the first match in India before returning home to score 307 runs in three matches for the Lions at an average of 76.75, including one hundred and two fifties. Van der Dussen is currently 10th on the Franchise 4-day charts and third on the averages. The wicketkeeper position, which has been Quinton de Kock’s for most of his career, is also in competition. Second, who was included in the squad to tour India but withdrew after an injury, is back in contention. Second has scored 220 runs in four Franchise first-class matches this season at 31.42 and has been included in the squad, leaving no room for Heinrich Klaasen, who made his debut in India. The A team, meanwhile, will be coached by former Test opener Ashwell Prince, and includes MSL stars such as batsman Pite van Biljon and bowler Nandre Burger. Prince will be assisted by former national assistant coach Malinbongwe Maketa and former Warriors coach Piet Botha.”The selection of the A side to play England in a three-day tour match is confirmation of our policy to make this team our official South African second XI and it has a good mix of experienced and young players,” Zondi said.Squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Dean Elgar, Beuran Hendricks, Keshav Maharaj, Pieter Malan, Aiden Markram, Zubayr Hamza, Anrich Nortje, Dane Paterson, Andile Phehlukwayo, Vernon Philander, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Rudi Second, Rassie van der DussenSouth Africa A squad: Temba Bavuma, Nandre Burger, Theunis de Bruyn, Reeza Hendricks, Pieter Malan, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dane Piedt, Lutho Sipamla, Glenton Stuurman, Pite van Biljon, Kyle Verreynne

Of the other members of Pakistan’s squad for the World Cup, their last international assignment, Mohammad Hafeez has been left out, and is currently playing for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League, while Shoaib Malik has retired.Iftikhar, who made the last of his three ODI appearances in November 2015, returns on the back of impressive displays in the Pakistan Cup 50-overs tournament, where he made back-to-back hundreds for Punjab. Nawaz made a pair of half-centuries in the same tournament, playing for Federal Areas.Misbah explained that Iftikhar’s List A batting record, and his ability to bowl a bit of offspin, made him an enticing pick in the post-Hafeez/Malik era.”Iftikhar has a 51 [51.65] average in List A, he has been a top performer in the last three to four seasons,” Misbah said. “He is, I think, our fifth bowler, and you can utilise him, his fitness is excellent. He is a mature player, he is a three-dimensional player, fielding-wise good, he can do bowling, he can bat, he has 91 strike rate and 51 average and that’s the reason we have brought him [into the squad]. Previously he was not coming into the team became of Hafeez and Shoaib, now he is in the team and he can bowl offspin too.”Mohammad Nawaz celebrates a wicket•Associated PressRizwan, meanwhile, was left out of the World Cup squad despite scoring two hundreds against Australia in an ODI series leading up to the tournament, when captain and regular keeper Sarfaraz Ahmed had been rested. He is now back, and possibly not just as back-up to Sarfaraz, with Misbah making a special mention of his batting skills.”Sarfaraz and Rizwan’s roles are different,” he said. “If someone has scored two hundreds at No. 4, you have a chance. You have the added advantage of having two wicketkeepers, fitness-wise he is very good, and he will be in the loop. We are trying to encourage such players and we will try to give them matches whenever we have a chance.”Responding to a question on Sarfaraz’s own form as batsman, and his place in the side, Misbah said: “Future is known to almighty only. Let’s give him a chance. Sarfaraz has worked a lot on his fitness. The biggest mistake was that Sarfaraz didn’t give himself a chance to prove [himself] as a batsman. If he gives 100% chance to himself, he is a player who can give you performances. Sarfaraz should not underestimate himself as a batsman.”Hafeez and Malik, Misbah said, were going to remain in contention for the T20I squad in the lead up to next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia.”Here we had a chance, one or two players [who] were not getting a chance, we should utilise [them],” he said. “Obviously we have a lot of opportunities before the World Cup, we have to go to Australia, we have to make a balanced team, and whosoever is effective we should consider the players.”Shoaib and Hafeez have performed well in the last ten T20s and we can’t ignore them, but this is the opportunity for other players to show their skills.”
