Steven Croft century drives Lancashire to emphatic win

Steven Croft smashed his maiden T20 century to power Lancashire Lightning to an imposing 204 for seven and set up a 35-run victory over Northamptonshire Steelbacks at Wantage Road.Croft took the attack to the Steelbacks attack, blasting seven sixes and five fours in his 101 and shared a 146-run partnership in 12 overs with Daryl Mitchell (48). The pair had led a belligerent fightback after Ben Sanderson (2 for 29) had raised home fans’ hopes by removing England power hitters Jos Buttler (0) and Phil Salt (12) in his first two overs. With Luke Wood (3 for 39) taking three wickets in an over in the powerplay, the hosts’ hopes rested once more on Australian big hitter Chris Lynn but when he fell for 21, it was left to all-rounders Tom Taylor (40) and AJ Tye (35) to entertain the crowds in a lively stand of 58 in five overs as the Steelbacks fell to their sixth defeat of the campaign. Lightning now have five wins from nine games, keeping them firmly in contention for a playoff spot. The Steelbacks’ evening had started promisingly when they restricted Lightning to just 39 for three off the powerplay. Sanderson trapped Buttler leg before in his first over and removed Salt in his second thanks to keeper Lewis McManus who took a diving legside catch. Wells became the third wicket to fall when he holed out off Taylor with Willey taking a well-judged catch. That though brought Mitchell and Croft together who were quick to go on the attack. Mitchell hit his first delivery for four and later dispatched Tye high over extra cover.Croft hit the first six of the game over long on off Sanderson and greeted Freddie Heldreich by sweeping him over square leg for two sixes and a four in his first over. He pulled Taylor over deep square for six and then hit the next two balls he faced, both from Heldreich, for two further maximums.Mitchell was also clearing the ropes, smashing two sixes down the ground off Zaib’s only over. He offered the bowler a sharp return chance though, but the bowler could not hold on.Justin Broad, playing his maiden first-team game for Northamptonshire finally made the breakthrough in his only over, accounting for Mitchell who was caught by Lynn off an attempted scoop.Croft fell soon after reaching his century thanks to Zaib who held onto a steepling chance at deep backward square off Tye, who also removed Tom Hartley in the final over.Liam Livingstone (25) played some big shots, clubbing England teammate Willey down the ground for six before he was run out off the final ball of the innings.Northamptonshire’s new opening pair Ricardo Vasconelos (15) and Emilio Gay (13) took 22 off the first two overs. Gay hit three consecutive boundaries off Jack Blatherwick before he was caught off the leading edge off the first ball of a highly eventful over from Wood.Vasconcelos pulled a free hit from Wood for six but departed to the next delivery when the bowler took a sharp low return catch. Wood then accounted for Willey next ball, caught by Salt, before Zaib safely survived the hattrick ball.Zaib hit Blatherwick into the top of the Turner Stand but was caught behind by Buttler off the next delivery to leave the Steelbacks in real trouble on 47 for four.Broad (14) looked unfazed on the big occasion, reverse sweeping Hartley for four and crunching Wells through extra cover before he was put down at long-on. Wells soon had his man though when Broad was caught by Mitchell at long-off.Lynn needed to play another powerhouse innings for the Steelbacks and had a stroke of luck when he was put down on the boundary off Hartley with the ball running away for four. But Hartley struck soon afterwards when he had Lynn caught off a top edge attempting to hook. Three overs later Wells picked up his second wicket when he bowled Lewis McManus (11).Tye and Taylor were determined to go down all guns blazing and took on the bowlers to give the home fans something to cheer. Tye dispatched Livingstone over the ropes and hit Blatherwick for an even bigger six over deep square leg. The fun ended when the Australian tried to uppercut Mitchell over the infield on one leg and was caught by Blatherwick for 35 (two sixes, three fours). Mitchell then had Sanderson caught and bowled two balls later.Taylor continued to blaze away, ending the game with an enormous six over deep midwicket to finish unbeaten on 40 (one six, two fours).

Luke Wells sets up Lancashire win with maiden T20 half-century

Lancashire Lightning beat Derbyshire Falcons by four wickets to start the 2023 Vitality Blast campaign as they aim to end it – with victory at Edgbaston. The Blast will conclude in Birmingham with Finals Day on July 15 and Lightning took an impressive first step towards that showpiece with a win in the first half of the inaugural Blast Off opener in the Second City sunshine. The Falcons’ 179 for 5, underpinned by Wayne Madsen’s classy 50 from 35 balls, was solid but no more than par on a good batting pitch.Lightning then reached 183 for 6 with four balls to spare after Luke Wells laid the foundation with a violent 66 off 35 balls, his maiden T20 half-century.After the Falcons were put in, Luke Wood began with a wide but his second ball was straight enough to win an lbw decision against Haider Ali. Madsen was soon motoring to his 25th T20 half-century though, supported by a sprinkling of lively, if fleeting, cameos.Second-wicket pair Luis Reece (23 off 21) and Madsen added 64 in 48 balls before the former fell lbw to Tom Hartley. Madsen struck four sixes on his way to a 34-ball fifty but perished next ball when he lifted Danny Lamb to Hartley at deep midwicket.Leus du Plooy clubbed three sixes in a 16-ball 33 then fell in pursuit of another when he holed out to Wood. Anuj Dal and Aneurin Donald connected with a blow or two and, after Mattie McKiernan clouted Tom Bailey for a last-over six, only the openers had failed to clear the ropes. The suspicion was, however, that it was a 200-pitch and the Falcons were a few short – and so it proved.Even without star batters Keaton Jennings (injured) and Phil Salt, Liam Livingstone and Jos Buttler (IPL-duty) Lightning reeled in their target. They started briskly as Pakistan quick Zaman Khan suffered a bracing welcome to the Blast. His first ball was hoisted far over long leg for six by Wells in an over that went for 18. Zak Chappell’s opening over then went for 15 as the Lightning thundered to 44 in three overs.Opening pair Wells and George Bell added 59 from 26 balls before the latter spliced Khan to mid on. Steven Croft was run out after finding himself at the same end as Wells but the opener thrashed a 24-ball fifty and left his side very strongly placed, needing 68 from ten overs, when he fell in familiar Blast fashion, caught in the leg-side deep.Daryl Mitchell’s cleanly-hit 31 off 19 balls kept Lightning’s foot on the Falcons’ throat and victory was closed out with more comfort than a last-over finish suggests.

Dean Elgar applauds his pacers for firing warning shots in short Gabba burst

South Africa captain feels his attack managed to open up “old scars” by roughing up Australia’s top order despite a tiny target to work with

Firdose Moonda18-Dec-2022Despite losing the Gabba Test in two days, Dean Elgar is confident South Africa still managed to fire a warning shot against Australia with their strong pace pack.South Africa’s four quicks took 14 Australian wickets in the match, including four in the successful second-innings chase of 34. Had South Africa scored “another 60 runs”, Elgar said, they might have been able to claim the unlikeliest of victories. Still, Elgar believes they’ve shown the Australian line-up what they are made of.”It was to try and open some old scars, to bring in our intensity and maybe get them three or four down so those batters go to Melbourne with maybe less confidence,” Elgar said. “It worked out nicely. The result aside, it was one of the game plans that worked out for us over the last two days. I can’t say there were many.”Related

South Africa put their best and their worst on show at Gabba

In particular, the short-ball strategy worked for Kagiso Rabada, who has snapped out of his T20 funk (he was South Africa’s least successful bowler at the T20 World Cup) and got into his role as Test spearhead. He finished the Brisbane Test with eight wickets and is now the leading bowler in Test cricket in 2022, with 45 wickets at 20.04, two ahead of Nathan Lyon.”It gives us confidence,” Elgar said. “He is a massive figure for us, not just in our bowling group but in our 16-man squad. When he puts his hand up like that it’s difficult not to follow.”Among Rabada’s victims was David Warner, whom he removed for a golden duck in the first innings and for 3 in the second. Warner is the only batter Rabada dismissed twice in the match and he has now got rid of him six times in seven Tests. Rabada targeting Warner appeared to be a well-planned tactic to take advantage of a player in a slump. Since his last Test fifty against Pakistan in Lahore, Warner has scored 169 runs in 10 Test innings, and his average in 2022 of 20.61 is the lowest for a calendar year in his Test career. But Elgar said South Africa were not specifically going after him alone. “It’s not just him. It’s all of them. We are always trying to find another way to have an edge over your opposition. If this was a way of getting into their minds further, brilliant. I know a guy like KG is the most feared bowler we have here, purely because of his reputation and record. If he has got that confidence running into the next Test, it’s brilliant for us.”Elgar noted how the rest of the attack respond when Rabada is at his best. “What you find is that really got [Anrich] Nortje fired up as well and he was starting to crank it up even more,” he said. “Hopefully that can inspire our batting unit to get their heads right and to knuckle down and get some performance under their belt for us.”

“I can’t see us hitting more balls and becoming better cricketers. We have played enough cricket in our personal careers and guys know their games really well, so hitting another 100 or 200 balls is not going to make you a better cricketer.”Dean Elgar

Well documented as South Africa’s weaker suit, their line-up slumped to a new low in Brisbane. They were dismissed for under 200 in both innings to make 2022 the year in which they’ve racked up their most sub-200 scores: eight times. They’ve had a lean World Test Championship run, with only two centuries in the campaign, the least among the competing teams, and they appear to lack both confidence and the ability to apply themselves. Still, Elgar defended their latest blowouts.”The guys in the change-room have played enough cricket to know this was one of those instances where we need to be honest and real about what’s just happened,” he said. “It’s not like our guys were throwing wickets away. We were getting absolutely jaffered out and they bowled properly,” he said. “That’s the way I will be approaching that. Coming into this game, our batters were confident. We prepared well and we played the warm-up game. It’s not like the confidence was low.”With a week between games, Elgar won’t be demanding any extra nets or time with the analyst. “I can’t see us hitting more balls and becoming better cricketers. We have played enough cricket in our personal careers and guys know their games really well, so hitting another 100 or 200 balls is not going to make you a better cricketer,” he said. “I speak from a personal point of view. It’s just one of those games where you failed. I am still confident going into the next one. We will definitely break it down and have chats. I would rather see the guys not do anything until we get to Melbourne. That’s just me.”He also hopes they don’t get too wrapped up in their own heads and enjoy the occasion of being in Australia over the festive season, which no South African team has done since 2008. “Guys need to tap into their mental spaces, which can be the biggest enemy, because you can really withdraw yourself instead of dealing with what’s happened and facing it,” he said.Asked if South Africa would consider changes to their XI, including an extra batter, Elgar said “all options are on the table” but repeated his preference for a six-five split, to accommodate the specialist spinner. “The option of seven-four was a talking point but I like having a specialist spinner. We didn’t even get to day three let alone four or five where the wickets are going to spin so Kesh’s [Keshav Maharaj] role was nullified by the game being over in two days,” he said. “I am still very much a captain who wants a spinner because he gives us a lot of control and allows our seamers to have a break where we can rotate them from one end but all options are open going into the next one.”Elgar confirmed that if South Africa were to include an extra batter, “Theunis de Bruyn is the next batter in”.

Newcastle now open talks to sign "direct" Almiron heir in bargain deal

Following Miguel Almiron’s departure to join MLS side Atlanta United, Newcastle United have reportedly opened talks to sign a rising star in a bargain deal for Eddie Howe.

Newcastle transfer news

Like many in the Premier League, Newcastle have left things late when it has come to potential reinforcements, having waited for the sale of Almiron to fund a last-gasp attempt to sign Bryan Mbeumo. Despite reportedly making a late approach to sign the Brentford star, who is valued at a hefty £60m, it seems as though the Magpies are set to miss out this time around.

That may not be the end of the matter, with Mbeumo someone who is on Newcastle’s radar following an excellent campaign. When the summer arrives, the Bees will no doubt face another battle to keep hold of one of their star men.

If successful later down the line, the Magpies could be welcoming a future star alongside Mbeumo, as there is a deal that they’re seemingly already setting in motion towards the end of the current window.

Bryan Mbeumo celebrates for Brentford

According to Mail Online, Newcastle have opened talks to sign Antonio Cordero from Malaga on a pre-contract agreement, which would see the 18-year-old winger arrive on a free deal in the summer.

Newcastle could move on from Wilson in late swoop for "electric" star

Newcastle have been offered a chance to sign the Serie A attacker.

ByDan Emery Feb 1, 2025

The young Spaniard could instantly become the heir to Almiron as a player on the rise and one to watch in the coming years.

"Direct" Cordero is one for the future

Whilst Almiron handed Howe an ageing option who was past his best, Cordero would instantly hand the Newcastle boss an exciting player who is yet to reach the peak of his powers. At just 18 years old, the Spaniard has already made an impact for Malaga’s senior side, scoring four goals and assisting another two in the Segunda Division in Spain.

Earning deserved praise as a result, analyst Ben Mattinson described Cordero as “direct” and “exciting” earlier this year, in what is a preview of what St James’ Park may witness in years to come if Newcastle get their deal over the line.

As the January transfer window comes to a close and Newcastle set their sights on summer additions, all signs are pointing towards a rising star in 18-year-old Cordero.

The Kickoff: Can Lionel Messi's Inter Miami bounce back from CONCACAF Champions Cup exit?

GOAL takes a look at some key storylines heading into Matchday 11 of MLS action in 2025

Matchday 11 is upon us, and some tasty storylines – and matches – are on the cards.

Perhaps the most shocking storyline in North American soccer this year, Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were knocked out of the CONCACAF Champions Cup Wednesday evening, falling to the Vancouver Whitecaps across two legs in the semifinals of the competition. Now, the and their Argentine talisman have a quick turnaround before hosting 2024 MLS Cup runners-up New York Red Bulls Saturday evening. With their stars in Messi and Luis Suarez not particularly at their best at the moment, can Javier Mascherano and his squad find a result against a talented RBNY side? Or will their unexpected early-season skid continue?
Meanwhile, two of the Eastern Conference's finest teams to begin 2025 clash this weekend, too, in Charlotte FC vs. Columbus Crew. With a bit of touchline unrest from Wilfried Zaha, though, will Dean Smith's men be distracted ahead of the match? For the Crew, can their terrific start to 2025 remain in tact – or will CLT unlock their stout defense?
Then, in the Western Conference, it's up to Diego "Moon Boy" Luna to figure out how to defeat the Whitecaps – MLS's team best to start 2025. Can the in-form U.S. international lead RSL to an unexpected victory?

GOAL dives into all that and more in The Kickoff, a weekly preview of each MLS Matchday.

Get the MLS Season Pass today!Stream games nowGetty Images SportCan Miami bounce back from Champions Cup exit?

Inter Miami have, unexpectedly, lost three-straight games across all competitions. Bounced from the Champions Cup, and in a bit of a rut in domestic league play, they've got a lot to play for this weekend against the New York Red Bulls.

The host the 2024 MLS Cup runners-up and will be in search of a big three points, while needing their stars to step up.

Suarez has scored just one goal this season, though he has contributed five assists. Miami is in desperate need of help in front of the net if it wants to get back to its best. Messi himself, meanwhile, is on a four-game skid across all competitions without a goal contribution. In league play, the Argentine's last goal came on a 1-1 draw with Toronto FC on April 6, and his last assist in league play came on the opening day of the season on Feb. 22.

RBNY, meanwhile, have lost just three matches on the season, and are coming into the match off a 1-0 win on Matchday 10 over CF Montreal. With the likes of former Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in the mix alongside Emil Forsberg, the have a tall task ahead of them to try and churn out an important victory amid an unexpected skid in form.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWill Charlotte and Zaha be able to overcome Nancy and Columbus?

After a social media outrage postgame from Wilfried Zaha highlighted Charlotte FC's loss to the New England Revolution last weekend, the club will be looking to bounce back and return to winning ways on Matchday 11 – but it will be no easy task on the road against the Columbus Crew at Lower.Com Field.

The hosts, meanwhile, are looking to maintain their fine form. With just one loss under their belt this season, a one-goal defeat to Inter Miami, they're looking to keep their record against conference opponents as tight as possible, too.

Columbus, who sits second in the East, and Charlotte, fourth in the same conference, are separated by just two total points. On paper, the two teams are matched up brilliantly, with Zaha and U.S. international Patrick Agyemang in the attack alongside shock 2025 MLS MVP candidate Pep Biel – who has nine goal contributions in 10 appearances this season.

The Crew, meanwhile, will look to get new $4.5 million forward Daniel Gazdag – who they acquired from the Philadelphia Union ahead of the transfer deadline – going in the attack as he's goalless in three appearances so far this season.

A matchup between two of the league's best, it's a highly-anticipated Eastern Conference affair.

Can Diego Luna heroics lift RSL past Vancouver?

Vancouver's top-tier form at the moment is officially no fluke – the club is a CONCACAF Champions Cup finalist. It is, at the moment, the team in MLS nobody wants to play – home or away.

RSL, though, have an ace up their sleeve in Luna – and amid match congestion due to continental competition – the U.S. international could be the difference maker for them on Matchday 11 when they clash with the Whitecaps.

Coming off a brace last weekend, including a brilliant individual goal, the 21-year-old is in fine form and has become "the guy," for the Western Conference side.

With new striker Willy Agada in the mix, a deadline day acquisition from Sporting Kansas City, Luna has a new option to play within the attack, and that will only bolster RSL's odds of making something happen against a talented Vancouver side.

With a bit of positivity in their ranks after their performance against San Diego FC last weekend, there's a chance Pablo Mastroeni's men could take advantage of the moment and capitalize on some potential rotation within Vancouver's team, or tired legs from the past 10 days. If that happens? Surely Luna will play a role in some manner.

Henry Tomkins provides MLS League predictions for the weekend: New England’s recent tight-knit defense should make it even harder for Toronto to find the back of the net, which is something they've struggled to do lately. Montreal and LA Galaxy still haven’t won across this MLS campaign. There’s a high likelihood that this may continue against Philadelphia and Sporting KC, respectively.

San Jose vs Portland are tied for the most goals scored in the league, with 20 each. Therefore, their match could feature plenty of goals. Cincinnati could create some distance at the top of the Eastern Conference if they continue their winning streak and earn another three points.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The U.S. last won the Gold Cup in 2021 and are looking to right the ship after a disappointing showing at the CONCACAF Nations League Finals, where they lost to both Panama and Canada in succession.

The Americans generally have a strong record against their opposition. The USMNT are 5-0-0 (W-L-D) in the Gold Cup against Trinidad and Tobago, although the island nation famously knocked the team out of World Cup qualification in 2018.

The host nation is 3-0-1 against Haiti and has a mixed record against Saudi Arabia in international competition – losing 3-0 in 1992 before winning 2-0 in 1999.

The U.S. have a dominant record in the two Texas cities in which they will play, going 5-0-0 in Austin and 6-0-0 at AT&T Stadium.

  • WHAT POCHETTINO SAID

"Overall, I’m excited about the draw," USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino said in a statement. "This is an important opportunity for our team, not only to compete for our confederation championship but also to continue to build our understanding of the group and who will be able to help us be successful at the FIFA World Cup next summer."

Man City in advanced talks with £50m ace who’s open to January Etihad move

Manchester City are in advanced talks to sign a £50 million international forward who is open to joining the Blues in January.

Man City transfer news

Given how the 2024/25 season has gone for City so far, this month has the makings to be a busy period for Pep Guardiola’s side, as they look to try and get back to the top of the Premier League and make the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Big upgrade on Grealish: Man City plotting to re-sign "electric" £37m star

Manchester City could shock the Premier League by re-signing an old winger.

ByBen Gray Jan 8, 2025

It appears there are a few areas of the pitch that Guardiola would like to strengthen this month, with a new defender and midfielder high on the list of targets. Earlier this week it was reported that City are ready to make a move and sign Juventus defender Nicolo Savona. The full-back has impressed City, and they are ready to bring him to the Etihad as they are also ready to move Kyle Walker on at some point this year.

As well as defence, signing a new midfielder will be seen as important by Guardiola, as City have struggled since Rodri was sidelined with a season-ending injury. It’s been reported that City are ready to go all out and sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad after holding internal talks over the player. Meanwhile, it was reported on Wednesday that the Blues are also ready to make a move for Lazio midfielder Nicolo Rovella. The 23-year-old is at Lazio on loan from Juventus, and City are ready to pay £33 million to bring him to the Etihad this month.

Man City in advanced talks with £50m ace

A new defender and midfielder are not the only positions the Premier League champions are looking at, as according to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Man City are now in advanced talks to sign Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt, and the player is open to a move this month.

It was reported earlier this week that City had held talks with Marmoush over a possible move to the Etihad after the 25-year-old continues to impress in the Bundesliga this season. The forward joined Frankfurt on a free transfer in July 2023, and since then, he has gone on to become one of the best attacking players in Germany, with only Harry Kane scoring more than him so far in the Bundesliga this season.

13 goals in 15 league games have alerted the attention of City, who, according to Plettenberg, are now in advanced talks to sign the forward. He states that concrete negotiations are taking place between the Premier League side and the management of Marmoush, and these talks are advanced, but a full agreement has yet to be reached.

He goes on to add that Marmoush “loves” Frankfurt, but he is open to a move this month as it represents a good opportunity for him. The Blues are offering the Egypt striker a contract until 2030, but as of now there are still negotiations between the two clubs, with Frankfurt wanting between 50 and 60 million euros, which is roughly £41-50 million.
