Best signing since Pereira: West Brom have struck gold on "special" star

West Bromwich Albion are in danger of falling out of the playoff positions in the Championship now after their first defeat in seven in the difficult division popped up away at Norwich City.

Goal difference is the Baggies’ best friend currently in sixth spot, with the likes of Middlesbrough and Bristol City breathing down the necks of Tony Mowbray’s men to try and leap into the second tier’s nervy lottery at the expense of the West Midlands outfit.

Mowbray will just pray that his key West Brom personnel can step up to the mark when needed between now and the close of the regular season, with Baggies managers of the past such as Slaven Bilic relying on the magic of Brazilian superstar Matheus Pereira to seal promotion.

Pereira's promotion heroics at West Brom

The second-tier high-flyers hit instant gold when snapping up Pereira on an initial loan deal back in 2019 as the South American ace made the Championship his very own playground.

Indeed, the one-time senior Brazil international would light up the notoriously strenuous league with top-drawer display after top-drawer display, leading to a mammoth 28 goal contributions coming his way across 43 total contests in that debut year.

Promotion was won automatically off the back of the now 28-year-old’s sublime heroics, with Pereira then going to solidfy himself as a Premier League-calibre performer with 11 goals and six assists picked up from 33 top-flight clashes.

Mowbray doesn’t quite possess such flashy options at his disposal at the moment – away from the likes of assist king Tom Fellows perhaps – but there is one face in the West Brom camp who could be the side’s best purchase since the golden days of Pereira, even as he remains injured.

Former West Brom attacker Matheus Pereira.

West Brom's best signing since Pereira

Mowbray re-entered the building back in January with a sizable injury issue troubling him, considering he would have been told to help his new outfit win promotion even with a star player sidelined.

The star player is, of course, Josh Maja, who has found himself out of the West Brom first-team set-up for an agonising 14 games now after suffering a nasty lower leg injury that has since required surgery.

This has been a bitter pill for Mowbray and Co to swallow with the ex-Sunderland striker a man possessed in front of goal before this horrible setback, with Maja up to a stunning 12 goals and two assists from 26 Championship contests before January’s heartbreaking development.

Further lauded as a “special” talent by former West Brom boss Carlos Corberan before his departure to Valencia, it did feel as if Maja’s goals alone could have been the kick the Baggies needed to consolidate a playoff spot, knowing that he can cause second tier defences all sorts of bother in the blink of an eye.

Despite missing large portions of the campaign, the injury-prone 26-year-old still finds himself proudly top of the goalscoring charts, with the decision to bring in Maja on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 more than paying off even if he finds himself stuck in the Hawthorns treatment room.

It could be argued, therefore, that he’s been the best bit of business conducted by West Brom since Pereira’s explosive arrival onto the scene, with a hope Maja can be back fit if his side reach the playoffs, having been ruled out now for the rest of the 46-game season.

If he can inspire that same promotion-winning feeling, memories of Pereira’s heroics would certainly come flooding back.

Amorim must offload Man Utd flop who’s been a worse signing than Onana

Over the last few years, Manchester United have spent a small fortune in the transfer window, as they look to return to Premier League glory after a decade-long wait for a title.

Former boss Erik ten Hag splashed over £600m on new additions during his three summers in charge at Old Trafford, but many of his signings have failed to deliver.

The Red Devils currently sit in 14th place with just 11 games remaining, all but ending their hopes of securing a place in any form of European football for next season – unless they win the Europa League.

Manchester United manager RubenAmorimreacts on the touchline

Ruben Amorim has struggled to work his magic with the current crop of players in the North West, desperately needing the summer to make his stamp on the first-team squad.

Questions have started to be asked about one of Ten Hag’s additions, especially after his displays under Amorim over the last couple of weeks.

Andre Onana’s stats for Man Utd in 2024/25

Andre Onana joined United back in the summer of 2023 for a fee in the region of £47m, looking to provide a replacement for fan-favourite David de Gea after Ten Hag decided he wanted a change between the sticks.

The Cameroonian has impressed in spells since his move, keeping 16 clean sheets over the last two years in the Premier League, achieving a 72% save percentage in the current campaign.

However, his time at the club has been littered with mistakes, none more so than the recent clash with Ipswich Town in midweek, when he was potentially at fault for both of the opponent’s goals.

The first saw the 28-year-old come rushing out with Patrick Dorgu, knocking the ball past him for an open net, whilst failing to deal with a cross that found its way right into the bottom corner.

Despite the recent form of Onana, one other first-team member has been a huge disappointment for the Red Devils, with Amorim needing to offload him when having the chance this summer.

The player who’s been a worse signing than Onana for United

Given the lack of impact from the majority of Ten Hag’s signings, a whole host of players could depart Old Trafford in the coming months, handing Amorim funds to make his own signings.

One of those who needs to be sold after his recent run in the side is striker Rasmus Hojlund, who has been way below the expectations placed upon him after his move in 2023.

The Dane cost a mammoth £72m, joining from Italian side Atalanta as he looked to provide the goods in the final third for United – something which they’ve struggled with in recent years.

However, he’s been unable to find his best form in Manchester, scoring just 23 times in his 77 appearances to date, enduring a horrid run of form in recent months.

The 22-year-old has only managed seven goals in 2024/25, with only two of which coming in the league, failing to find the net in any of his 17 games across all competitions.

As a result, he’s previously been dubbed “hopeless” by journalist Samuel Luckhurst, with the manager utilising different options at the top end of the pitch – including Kobbie Mainoo, who was deployed as a false nine against Crystal Palace.

His figures from the Premier League to date have been nothing short of disastrous, averaging just 1.1 shots per 90, highlighting the lack of attacking threat he’s produced this campaign.

He’s also been dispossessed 1.5 times per 90, unable to make the ball stick at the top end of the pitch, not fitting into Amorim’s philosophy, which demands the centre-forward to often play with his back to goal – as seen with Viktor Gyokeres at Sporting.

Given his lack of form over the last couple of months, United will struggle to recoup all of their big-money investment, expecting to lose a huge chunk if Hojlund were to depart in the off-season.

However, it’s evident that improvements are desperately needed to overturn the current lack of goals, with the Dane needing to be sold to provide Amorim with the funds to make his stamp on the forward line.

Afghanistan's status as ICC Full Member unlikely to be affected

Despite dim prospects for an Afghanistan women’s team being formed so long as the Taliban remain in power, Afghanistan’s status as an ICC Full Member is unlikely to be affected. The matter is set for wider discussion at the next ICC board meetings in Dubai in March, when the ICC’s working group on Afghanistan will provide an update on progress in the country. ESPNcricinfo understands that the group, headed by the ICC’s deputy chair Imran Khwaja, will push for not penalising Afghanistan’s status and shed greater light on the difficulties the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) faces in pushing to develop the women’s game.Khwaja has met with ACB officials and government representatives in Doha twice in recent months, to get a clearer handle on the broader situation for cricket since the Taliban took over, as well as how women can be helped to play cricket. Those meetings are believed to have been “productive”, according to one official who attended.Related

  • Afghanistan Cricket Board urges patience with women's initiatives

At the second meeting, in February, the ACB assured the ICC’s working group that the board remains supportive of women’s cricket, but the political reality meant that an overt push for it could still prove dangerous for those involved.”Afghanistan is a delicate situation,” Ross McCollum, an ICC board member (Ireland) and member of the working group, told ESPNcricinfo. “The guys from ACB do want to see things happen with women’s cricket. But it’s not down to them, it’s down to the people in charge.”Forcing women to play cricket could lead to serious repercussions. We have to tread carefully, it will be a slow process. In December the Taliban banned secondary and higher education for females through the country, the latest manifestation of their repressive policies against women. The ICC working group was told, however, that there are differences in opinion within the Taliban about the role of women in society and that there exist exemptions which allow women to work in the medical sectors. That has not yet come through for any sports.Even before the Taliban takeover, little progress had been made on women’s cricket in the country. In October 2020, the ACB had held a national team trial camp and announced their intention to award 25 central contracts for women. Cultural sensitivities, officials pointed out at the time, were such that quicker, deeper progress was proving difficult and Afghanistan had been a Full Member for three years then. The working group has been told that the Taliban are not interfering otherwise in the running of the ACB. The government has apparently provided some funding to a board that had been hit hard after the Taliban took over, as international sanctions made it difficult to send money into the country.Changes to status for Full Members, in any case, are rare and none other than Zimbabwe have ever been suspended or had membership downgraded. But the fact that Afghanistan continues to be the only Full Member without a women’s team, or even a set-up in place – otherwise part of the ICC’s membership criteria – has been persistently highlighted in recent months.Australia cancelled an ODI series against Afghanistan in response to the education ban imposed on females•IDI via Getty Images

They were the only member to not have a presence at the pathbreaking U19 T20 Women’s World Cup in January and then at the T20 Women’s World Cup right after. That point was not lost on the ICC CEO, Geoff Allardice, who said ahead of the U19 tournament that it was concerning no progress had been made on the matter.FICA, the global players’ body, has also called the ban on women’s sport a “significant blow” and pointed out that Afghanistan is “in breach” of its Full Member requirements. But it did not call for a ban on Afghanistan, instead calling on the ICC to “embed its human rights responsibilities as a business in its governance and regulatory frameworks.”A number of Afghan women cricketers have also been very clear in calling for the ICC to play a more proactive role. According to ABC Radio’s , 22 of the 25 cricketers who were part of that original pool have left the country and resettled in Australia. Speaking on the show in January, several of the players asked why the ICC had not been in touch to offer support since they fled.”If we have the support of the ACB, the ICC, the people of Afghanistan and other countries that play cricket, then it is possible for us to keep playing,” one of the players, Firooza Afghan said on the show.”In Australia we have a lot of support – lots of equipment and facilities. But my question is, women have been playing cricket in Afghanistan since 2010 … why did the ICC not send anyone to check on us?”The players wrote to the ICC a couple of months ago, asking for ways in which the global body could help the women form a team. The ICC pointed out that constitutionally any such help would have to go through the member – the ACB – but intend to keep the dialogue open with the cricketers. And considerable thought has been given to the matter within ICC management as it stands, including the idea of funding a women’s team outside of Afghanistan, and one that runs outside of ACB approval. That only represents initial exploratory thinking on the subject and actioning it would require buy-in from the ICC board. On that platform, support and understanding for the ACB remains. At a recent Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting, members reiterated their support. Pakistan, in fact, have agreed to play a three-match T20I series with Afghanistan, to fill the hole left by Australia’s cancellation of an ODI series.Cricket Australia is the only board to have publicly acted in response to the Taliban’s policies. They first postponed a one-off Test they were to host Afghanistan in – the first the two countries would have played – and more recently cancelled the ODI series, in response to the education ban imposed on females. Most other ICC Full Members have remained silent on the matter so far, though the majority still see the rise of Afghanistan’s men’s team as a fairytale that should be allowed to continue and grow, rather than be curtailed.”It needs to be discussed seriously (at board level),” McCollum said. “Each Full Member will have their own interpretation. I don’t think it’s a straightforward decision because it’s complex and there are ramifications.”

Kane Williamson on Martin Guptill: ‘He has been one of our best white-ball players ever’•Getty Images

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has admitted that the team will miss Martin Guptill, who has chosen not to take up a central contract and has subsequently been released by NZC. The 36-year old opener has joined a growing group of New Zealand players looking to explore career opportunities outside the country. The proliferation of franchise cricket is such that there is a T20 league for virtually every month of the year now, presenting an attractive package for many cricketers. Trent Boult, James Neesham and Colin de Grandhomme have all opted to pursue that line of work leaving New Zealand with a bit of a juggling act.Related

“Obviously, he has made a decision to explore a few other options,” Williamson said, “But as a player and as an experienced member of the group, he has added so much value over the years and been one of our best white-ball players ever.”With over 10,000 white-ball runs, Guptill has been a crucial part of New Zealand’s success but they appear to have moved on from him. He didn’t play any of their games at the T20 World Cup and was dropped from the squad altogether for the ongoing India series.Williamson was appreciative of Guptill taking those calls in stride. “Without getting a playing opportunity, he was outstanding and offering to all the players in the group. So, he’s been fantastic in so many areas of the environment. Absolutely, he will be missed, but like I say he’s not retired. So there’s a lot to keep working through over the next period to get a real feel for how the picture looks.”It is learnt that Guptill may be in line for a BBL deal with the new season starting in December. Boult already has one with the Melbourne Stars, following which he will be in the UAE playing for MI Emirates. De Grandhomme is retired, the announcement coming soon after his name unexpectedly popped up at the BBL draft earlier this year. Neesham is the only one of the four currently in the team preparing to face India on Friday. While NZC have stressed that they’d like to give preference to players who are under contract when picking their squads, Williamson understood that the situation has changed and that they have to figure out a way forward that benefits both the team and the individual.”It’s just trying to strike that balance, like we’ve seen with a few other players who have also sort of looked at some of those other opportunities. It’s a bit of a moving landscape. So it’s trying to weigh that up and look at how it can all work moving forward.

Watch India tour of New Zealand live on Prime Video from Nov 18 to 30.

“Guptill hasn’t retired. He is looking at playing some other tournaments while still being available, but like I say, it’s balancing that moving forward. He’s still very motivated to keep playing and getting better. And I think that’s important for all players, even though he has played such a long, amazing career. As a mate and a team-mate over a long period of time, we had a few good chats. And it’s managing that time. As a player, you always go through different periods and you get to different stages, and you’re trying to basically manage that as best you can.”Williamson himself is facing similar questions, playing and captaining New Zealand in all three formats, but last week he reiterated his desire to keep doing so.

Dragusin upgrade, Hojbjerg heir: 5 players Tottenham must sign this summer

Tottenham Hotspur fans received a deadline-day boost when the club confirmed the signing of highly rated French winger Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.

The 19-year-old, often compared to Thierry Henry and Kylian Mbappe, reportedly turned down interest from multiple Premier League rivals to join Spurs, where he will compete with the likes of summer signing Dominic Solanke for a spot in the frontline.

How Tel will fare in north London remains to be seen, but even if he excels, several glaring issues still need addressing for Ange Postecoglou’s side. Much to everyone’s surprise, Spurs have been stuck in the bottom half this season, exposing key weaknesses across the squad.

Tottenham's most expensive signings of all time

A detailed look at Spurs’ 10 most expensive signings of all time.

ByCharlie Smith Sep 5, 2025

One of the biggest concerns is the lack of solidity in defensive midfield – a lingering problem since Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s departure to Marseille last year.

Injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven have further highlighted the need for defensive reinforcements, as backup options Ben Davies and Radu Dragusin have struggled to fill the void.

A new, world-class goalkeeper should also be on the club’s radar, with Guglielmo Vicario’s inability to command his box at corners proving to be a major issue.

With all that in mind, here are five players we believe Tottenham should target in the summer.

1 Marc Guehi Crystal Palace

Tino Livramento battles with Marc Guehi

Due to a combination of injuries and a lack of quality, Tottenham’s biggest issue this season has been their defence. While Postecoglou’s side has been prolific in attack, they have struggled to keep goals out.

In an attempt to address the problem, Spurs made a surprise £70m bid for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi on deadline day, but their offer was swiftly rejected.

With competition expected in the summer, Tottenham should make every effort to secure his signature. Since joining Crystal Palace in 2021, Guehi has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top centre-backs.

He has also proven his ability on the biggest stage, delivering standout performances for England during their run to the Euro 2024 final.

2 Arda Guler Real Madrid

Despite being one of Europe’s most promising young talents, Arda Guler has become something of an outcast at Real Madrid, struggling to fully break into a forward line stacked with superstars like Kylian Mbappe, Rodrygo, Vinícius Junior, Endrick and Brahim Diaz. Injuries haven’t helped his cause either, further limiting his opportunities.

Too gifted to waste away on the bench, Guler should seek a move where he can truly showcase his abilities, and Tottenham could be the perfect destination to give him that chance.

Often compared to the great Lionel Messi due to his elegant dribbling, lethal finishing and exquisite left foot, the Turkey international would be a fantastic addition to Spurs’ frontline – one with the potential to become a club icon in the years ahead.

The main obstacle is that Real Madrid have made it clear they have no intention of selling Guler, while the player himself is also understood to want to remain in the Spanish capital and fight for his place in Carlo Ancelotti’s star-studded side.

However, things can change quickly in football. If the 19-year-old continues to struggle for regular game time, he may reconsider his options by the end of the year.

The 11 most expensive youngsters of all time

These wonderkids all moved for big money, but only some were able to live up to the hype.

ByBrett Worthington Jan 30, 2025 3 Caoimhin Kelleher Liverpool

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Ask any Tottenham fan, and they’ll likely tell you that while Guglielmo Vicario has had a promising spell in north London, he doesn’t seem like a long-term solution as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

A player who could be, however, is Liverpool No 2 Caoimhin Kelleher.

The Republic of Ireland international has consistently impressed when called upon, most notably in the Champions League against Real Madrid, where he denied Kylian Mbappe from the penalty spot to help secure a 2-0 victory for the Reds.

Despite his talent, he has never been able to fully displace Alisson as Liverpool’s No 1, and he recently made it clear that he wants regular first-team football elsewhere.

With seven clean sheets in 14 appearances this season, Kelleher has already proven he belongs at a top Premier League club. Spurs should seize the opportunity to make him their long-term goalkeeper.

4 Milan Skriniar Fenerbahce/PSG

While a fully fit trio of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and potentially Marc Guehi should, in theory, provide enough defensive stability for Spurs next season, this campaign has shown that relying on limited depth is a gamble they can’t afford to take.

Additional cover is essential, even if only to ensure Postecoglou can avoid relying on Radu Dragusin.

A viable and high-quality option could be Slovakian defender Milan Skriniar, who is currently on loan at Fenerbahce from Paris Saint-Germain. He is not expected to remain in Turkey beyond this season, and reports suggest he will be sold by PSG in the summer – probably on the cheap.

At 29, he still has plenty left to offer at the top level, and his strong passing ability would make him a strong fit for Spurs’ system.

5 Ederson Atalanta

Spurs have invested heavily in their search for a dynamic, all-action holding midfielder in recent years – spending significant sums on Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr, Moussa Sissoko and Tanguy Ndombele, among others.

Yet, none have truly lived up to expectations, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – now at Marseille – arguably coming the closest to success.

Atalanta’s Ederson could finally be the player to bring that long-running search to an end.

Back in January, South American football expert Tim Vickery described Ederson as a “strong, well-built central midfielder”.

“Strong on the ball, versatile, box-to-box. Strong personality as well,” Vickery said to Sky Sports of the Brazilian, who has been capped twice by his country.

Vickery added: “The first time I remember him was his professional debut, really. He was thrown in the deep end in a big team called Cruzeiro, who were really on the slide. They were relegated in dreadful form and even in this bad context, he stood out, so a lot of virtues.”

Atalanta are reportedly willing to listen to bids in excess of £42m in the summer, which would be a bargain for a player of his quality.

Beth Mooney has reclaimed the No. 1 spot for batters in the ICC women’s T20I rankings after topping the CWG 2022 run-scorers’ chart, finishing with 179 runs from five innings. Tahlia McGrath (No. 5) has joined Mooney, Meg Lanning (No. 2) and Alyssa Healy (No. 9) in the top ten, while Jemimah Rodrigues is now one of three Indians – who finished runners-up to Australia in Birmingham – in the top ten after a seven-spot jump to No. 10; Smriti Mandhana (No. 4) and Shafali Verma (No. 6) are the others.Full rankings tables

Mooney had slipped behind Lanning in the previous rankings update, but knocks of 70* against Pakistan, 36 in the semi-final against New Zealand, and a 41-ball 61 in the final against India gave her a tally of 179 runs for the tournament, and took her back past Lanning to the top. Lanning didn’t have a particularly good time of it with the bat in Birmingham, totalling just 91 runs, but it was enough to keep her in second place.Rodrigues went through a career slump recently, but has bounced back strongly, aggregating 146 runs at CWG 2022, with her best outings coming against Barbados (56 not out), against England in the semi-final (44 not out) and against Australia in the final (33). Only Mandhana scored more in the tournament among Indians, 159.2:23

Rodrigues: ‘This team has a lot of potential and will do wonders’

Among the bowlers, Sophie Ecclestone held on to the top spot after picking up five wickets in Birmingham, but there were some changes below her within the top ten. Katherine Brunt picked up five wickets too, at an economy rate of 5.06 (Ecclestone went at 6.29) and rose to No. 2, while Shabnim Ismail and Megan Schutt both moved up two positions, to fourth and fifth respectively. Sarah Glenn, who was at No. 2, has dropped to third place.Sophie Devine had a memorable tournament on the personal front, while leading New Zealand to a bronze-medal finish. Devine hit 177 runs, only behind Mooney’s tally, and picked up six wickets at an economy rate of 6.59, to stay atop the allrounders’ table. Ash Gardner, meanwhile, has moved up to No. 2, crossing Nat Sciver after scoring 96 runs and picking up five wickets in Birmingham. Deepti Sharma has moved up to fourth on that table. Some South African players also made gains, even though their team didn’t make the final four. Nonkululeko Mlaba has risen to eighth, up 14 places, among bowlers after picking up three wickets in three bowling innings, while batters Anneke Bosch (up five spots to No. 20) and Tazmin Brits (up six places to No. 22) were also on the move.

Romano: Chelsea eyeing up Mudryk upgrade who’s "England’s next superstar"

Chelsea have scored the joint third most goals in the Premier League this season, with only front-runners Liverpool and Tottenham scoring more. The Blues have scored 39 goals in 20 games played, averaging 15.8 shots per game (4th highest shots taken per game on average in the division).

That being said, much of the attacking burden has been on Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson (who had been running hot for a few months). Palmer has scored 13 goals and provided six assists so far this season, whilst Jackson has scored nine and assisted three.

Cole Palmer in action for Chelsea

Enzo Maresca’s wingers often need to provide that goal threat, especially in games where teams look to pack the box and defend central areas.

That being said, only Madueke has scored more than three goals in the Premier League from the wing, with five goals in 18 appearances.

As a result, could another forward player arrive in the January transfer window?

Chelsea looking at English winger

According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is being closely monitored by Chelsea. Along with the Blues keeping tabs on the 20-year-old, Liverpool are also said to be scouting him, along with other top Premier League clubs.

Romano does mention that a summer move is more likely for the highly-rated youngster, but with clubs already beginning to circle like sharks, a move in January could be feasible in order to get ahead of the competition that will surely be there for his signature in the summer.

Bynoe-Gittens has made 23 appearances so far this season for Dortmund, scoring nine goals, providing five assists and totalling 1,519 minutes.

How Bynoe-Gittens compares to Mudryk

With Mykhailo Mudryk currently suspended and his Chelsea career not quite panning out the way it had been planned, it could finally be time for the Blues to replace him with someone like Bynoe-Gittens, who has been labelled as “England’s next superstar” by one German outlet.

Since joining the club, Mudryk has made 73 appearances, scoring ten goals and providing nine assists in 3,613 minutes played. Put it simply, he hasn’t been great and Gittens could be a seismic upgrade.

You can instantly see when comparing Mudryk and Bynoe-Gittens, the extra goal threat the Englishman provides, with a higher shot volume (2.38 compared to 1.75), more goals per 90 (0.54 compared to 0.32) and higher xG generated (0.22 compared to 0.19).

Along with this, you still get the progressive carrying quality, successful take-ons/1v1 ability and creative passing (higher progressive passes but fewer key passes). This profile would be brilliant for Chelsea, especially when you consider what Jadon Sancho offers Maresca as a different option on the left too.

Chelsea winger Mykhaylo Mudryk

It’s clear another forward would be welcomed at Stamford Bridge, one that could help the likes of Palmer in providing goal threat and output in those attacking areas, helping to break down those “low blocks” Chelsea have struggled with in recent weeks. Bynoe-Gittens could be exactly that, whether it’s in January or the summer.

Will Young 96 shores up Northants in draw with footsore Yorkshire

“Yorkshire set for victory against Northamptonshire” had been one morning headline, but as the Tykes contingent came down to breakfast, they would not have been that confident. Their third-day declaration had indicated their fear that it was going to be a hard slog and there was no certainty that they had the pace attack to flourish. Any such pessimism proved justifiable as Northants refused to yield on a placid surface. There were many shakes of head from the county’s travelling savants when Yorkshire failed to declare at tea on the third day when the lead was 452. Northants had never managed more than 411 in the fourth innings in their history. No side had ever chased more than 472 in the fourth innings of the Championship – Middlesex to beat Yorkshire eight years ago. In defiance of such statistics, Yorkshire opted to top-load for four more overs until they led by 498, smacking of a side not confident in its bowling resources. In their defence, the docility of the fourth-day pitch did suggest that offering a more chaseable target would have been strewn with pitfalls.Allowing yourself 120 overs to bowl out the opposition does seem ample, a view expressed afterwards by Yorkshire’s coach, Ottis Gibson. Eight points for a draw also makes any declaration a 50-50 gamble – eight points risked for eight points gained – a far less attractive proposition than it once was. Yorkshire, furthermore, still have the threat of points deductions hanging over their head as the Azeem Rafiq racism enquiry limps on. Are they chasing the title or avoiding the drop? Shouldn’t they be told? And everyone has to rock up and do this all again on Thursday as the counties try to negotiate what essentially on these deliberately-demanding, educational pitches are the equivalent of seven back-to-back Test matches. It is only a few years since two successive Test matches for England were regarded as an onerous undertaking. Already, around the counties, there are almost as many absent pace bowlers as there are those available.Northants’ resistance was organised by Will Young, the New Zealand opener, who was only four runs short of an unperturbed hundred when Matthew Revis managed to bring one back off the seam – a rare sight – and Young played on from a limp bottom edge. Young had batted for six hours and more than eight hours in the match. Resilient contributions from Rob Keogh and Lewis McManus, on loan from Hampshire, also help Northants towards a draw that will strengthen their conviction that they can survive in Division One.Related

Had Young’s edge against Haris Rauf, on 3, been held the previous evening by the wicketkeeper Harry Duke, the story might have been different. Duke flung himself to his right in the fourth over of the innings and failed to hold a tough, dipping catch. It was not his first blemish while keeping to Rauf this season as he comes to terms with his extra pace.Young’s Test career had a blip with three single-figure scores against South Africa in two Christchurch Tests in February, but he enjoyed a brief stint with Durham last season and he ticked along in risk-free fashion, leg-side singles to the fore, until he was sixth out with 26 overs remaining. Yorkshire managed only one more success as Northants went on to establish their highest fourth-innings score against Yorkshire. In the injury absence through injury of Matty Fisher and Ben Coad, and with David Willey’s impact being made at Royal Challengers Bangalore, the pedigree was lacking. Rauf has the firepower to unsettle batters on the most docile of surfaces, but his first-class experience is scant and at times his self-admonishment at not quite getting it right was clear to see. His last act, appropriately enough, was to kick at the ball in frustration. As for Fisher, he is out for a month with a “stress reaction” in his back (a possible precursor to a stress fracture) and will regain fitness, conveniently, just in time to be considered for the international summer. The rest of Yorkshire’s pace attack was a bit of a patched-up affair. The seasoned skipper, Steve Patterson, was supported by Jordan Thompson, who failed to repeat his threat in the first innings and two batters-turned-allrounders, Matthew Revis and George Hill.Revis had an excellent game – three wickets in each innings, and proof of his all-round usefulness that might well have kick-started his county career. But it was illustrative that most threat was carried by a player whose first-class record amounted to 2 for 19 against Nottinghamshire last September, and who hadn’t really thought of himself as a bowler until the former Yorkshire bowling coach, Richard Pyrah, proposed it two winters ago. He cranked it up to 81mph more than once and that was beyond all but Rauf, with Thompson markedly down on pace.Three morning wickets and Yorkshire’s victory would seem feasible. They duly delivered that number with Rauf roughing up Northants’ top order to good effect. Ricardo Vasconcelos, who has yet to find batting form as captain, fended a chest-high ball to gully. The short ball that removed Emilio Gay in Rauf’s next over was more waspish – a straight, head-high delivery which Gay, a tall, stately figure, played well enough, apart from the fact he plopped it into the hands of Dom Bess at short leg. Revis had his first wicket of the day when he seamed one across Saif Zaib for Duke to hold the catch.Young found redoubtable support from Rob Keogh in a fifth-wicket stand of 99 in 39 overs during which Yorkshire experimented with Dawid Malan’s legspin; no turn there either. Hill had Keogh caught at short extra off a leading edge with the first ball he bowled and it may be a long time before he bowls to such attacking fields again.Bess’ offspin is a key component, a player with England ambitions. But he carried little threat, his one moment of delight coming when he did straighten one to have the left-hander, Luke Procter, lbw. When he first burst on to the scene as Jack Leach’s partner in crime at Somerset, he had a shorter, fuss-free run. Now he has a longer, but halting run, coming to a stop halfway through his approach to make the first part appear superfluous.Yorkshire found no joy with the second new ball. Rauf resorted to yorkers and bouncers but was repelled. Instead, it was Revis who struck twice more, first Young then the Australian Matthew Kelly, yorked. Kelly had almost run himself out attempting a madcap single, but Thompson’s throw was off target. It would have taken something random for Yorkshire to win this. Instead, the sides shook hands on a stalemate and, bodies aching, they must do this all again on Thursday.
