Hasenhuttl must go all out to sign Mitchell

Southampton fans will be partying long into the night after witnessing their side’s impressive performance against Arsenal, with three points helping their survival hopes massively.

One of the biggest problems for the Saints is their options at the pinnacle of the attack, as Danny Ings and Michael Obafemi currently find themselves out on the sidelines.

However, it looks as if the Saints already have their sights set on securing an attacker in the summer, but it’s not the type of player that fans would be hoping for, as according to the Daily Mail, Southampton have made an enquiry for Birmingham City youngster Ramello Mitchell.

Mitchell has all the ingredients to become a hero at St Mary’s with his pace and finishing ability catching the eye of many clubs. He’s only 16 years of age with the whole of his career ahead of him and he’s been standing out for Birmingham at Under-16 and Under-18 level throughout the season so far, with a number of goals to his name.

The Saints have a strong reputation for developing youngsters into special talents and it’s fair to say that he could be blessed with an opportunity in the first-team in the next few years, so a move to St Mary’s would make sense.

Southampton fans, can you see your side winning the race to sign the youngster?

Newcastle United: Dubravka must repay Rafa’s faith amid Juventus interest

Martin Dubravka has built up a reputation as one of the Premier League’s top goalkeepers since his initial loan arrival at Newcastle from Sparta Prague last January.

Newcastle made a shrewd move in negotiating an option to buy the stopper at the end of his temporary deal, and the Slovakian has gone from strength to strength this season.

His ability had come into question in recent weeks after some high profile errors, but on the whole, his contribution to the Magpies has saved many more points than it has cost them.

But although Dubravka’s contract at St James’ Park is not due to run out until 2022, the Newcastle Chronicle worryingly report that his agent, Pavel Zika, while speaking to the Czech media, has insisted there is interest in his client from European giants Juventus, as well as other Premier League clubs.

He also added, however, that both his, and the player’s, preferred option is to sign an extended deal at Newcastle.

It is easy to see why players would have their heads turned when the likes of Juve are among their admirers, but Dubravka arrived at Newcastle as a relatively unknown figure, and it was Rafa Benitez who gave him the platform in the biggest league in the world.

Any thoughts he may harbour of playing in the Champion’s League, or for a European elite club, should be placed on the back-burner, and his sole focus should be on repaying the faith Newcastle had in him.

Obviously, down the line, his Champion’s League dream will almost certainly lie away from Gallowgate — unless some, as yet unknown, multi-billionaire transforms the Magpies into the next Manchester City — but for now, he should continue building his reputation exactly where he is.

He is adored by the legion of Toon fans who sit behind him in either the Leazes or Gallowgate Ends, singing his name game after game, and he will not be idolised in the same way at many other clubs.

Of course, playing contract negotiations out in public is an old trick, and we believe the likelihood is simply an agent trying to frighten a few extra pounds out of the club when his improved deal is offered.

What are your thoughts on Dubravka? Will he sign a new deal and stay at Newcastle in the long term? Let us know below…

Matchday musings: Newcastle United

A big game is to be held later today at the Vitality, with Newcastle United looking to go level on points with Bournemouth after what has been an unbelievable turn around from Rafa Benitez and his men. The run can’t end now, right?

Finally, it looks as though the Spaniard and his squad are on the same page and performing the way a Newcastle side should be. The Toon Army will be travelling down south with all the confidence in the world after their incredible come back last week against Everton. Indeed, it truly was a Premier League classic.

Still, Benitez must answer questions against an Eddie Howe side who are looking to build off their solid 0-2 away win against Huddersfield, in what is a huge game for the Magpies. Win, and that might just be survival guaranteed.

With that in mind, we take a look at a couple of changes the gaffer could make.

Drop Matt Ritchie

Matt Ritchie has been suffering from a run of poor form of late, and after being subbed against Everton before the magic began, missing a penalty. To be honest, he has looked the shadow of his former self lately, largely because he’s been performing two roles at once.

Not having scored since the memorable 2-1 win over Manchester City, the Magpies will need to look elsewhere in the squad until the Scottish international can get back to being devastating in the final third.

Start Kenedy

Despite struggling to get a real foothold in the squad this season, Kenedy will be looking to his past performance against Bournemouth earlier this season to inspire him. Grabbing his only assist this season against Bournemouth in the 2-1 home win, he will be hoping that a start would help provide the same sort of lift to bring all three points back to St. James’.

Newcastle fans will be remembering the form of Kenedy towards the end of last season, a form that lifted the Toon up and helped pave a way for survival. Is it too late for the 23-year-old to push on and recapture that same late-season form?

Do it: Liverpool fans want the club to activate Toby Alderweireld’s £25m release clause

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to reveal that they want the club to activate Toby Alderweireld’s release clause, which is believed to be £25m.

The Belgian international saw a one-year extension in his contract with Spurs triggered back in January, although that decision meant that his release clause came into play – in this market, it is a fee which could easily be triggered by a top club.

Has Alisson been Liverpool’s most important signing of the season? Check out the video below to find out why Jurgen Klopp thinks so…

Liverpool have, at times this season, suffered with their defensive depth at centre-back and have had to deploy Fabinho in the role on the odd occasion as a result of injuries to Joel Matip, Dejan Lovren and Fabinho.

However, if Alderweireld were to arrive on Merseyside, he could potentially stunt the development of Gomez, who, before his injury, was amongst the top performing defenders in the league and earning rave reviews from all corners.

For just £25m, the question has been put to the Reds’ fanbase on Twitter as to whether or not they’d like to see the former Ajax man arrive at Anfield in the summer.

Unsurprisingly, the majority are in favour of seeing the 30-year-old arrive at the club…

Wolves fans react as Conor Coady misses out on England call-up

[ad_pod ]

Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Conor Coady missed out on a spot in Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad that was announced on Wednesday, and Wolves fans were quick to react on Twitter.

Even though he had never been called up previously, the 26-year-old centre-back looked to be in with a shout this time around having skippered the west Midlands club to seventh in the Premier League following promotion last season, and to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Had Southgate still been playing with a three-at-the-back system – which he did at the 2018 World Cup – then the former Liverpool man may well have been a chance given that is also Nuno Santo’s preferred tactic.

However, the Three Lions boss has chosen a back four in more recent times, and that may well have cost the central defender on this occasion despite his impressive displays and leadership – Burnley’s James Tarkowski got the nod despite his team’s lowly position in the Premier League table.

Wolves supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the decision, and while one said it was “absolute madness” that Everton’s Michael Keane had made it in ahead of him, another labelled it as the “right decision”.

Wolves fans on Twitter react as star forward Diogo Jota is linked with Tottenham

[ad_pod ]

Wolverhampton Wanderers fans on Twitter have been split by transfer speculation linking their striker Diogo Jota with a summer move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Portugal man has been pivotal for Nuno Espirito Santo’s men at times this season, aiding them greatly in their push for seventh position in the Premier League.

His six goals and four assists in the league have been key and the player has also been able to further cement his place as a firm fan favourite at Molineux in 2018/2019.

It’s for these reasons that some supporters have been so apprehensive about Jota’s possible departure on Twitter, one commenting “no chance” and another simply telling Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs that they can “dream on.”

Other members of the wolf pack have shown slightly different attitudes, discounting the rumours as simple paper talk and even eyeing up a swap deal involving Son Heung-min of the Lilywhites.

West Brom fans absolutely loved Johnstone’s performance

[ad_pod ]

It would be fair to say that the West Bromwich Albion fans were delighted with Sam Johnstone’s performance against Swansea City on Wednesday night.

The Baggies recorded a 3-0 victory on home soil, with Chris Brunt, Mason Holgate and Jay Rodriguez finding the back of the net in the Championship affair.

The West Brom fans loved the display of Brunt, but they were also thrilled with how Johnstone performed at the Hawthorns.

According to WhoScored, the 25-year-old made seven saves and there were a few absolute crackers in there, with Swansea somehow failing to find the back of the net.

Johnstone joined West Brom from Manchester United in last summer’s transfer window and has managed just seven clean sheets in the Championship this term, which isn’t fantastic.

His performance against Swansea, though, was very impressive indeed.

Not the answer: Paulo Dybala would be a terrible fit for Liverpool

[ad_pod ]

Paulo Dybala. A player who is obviously a world-class talent, that much goes without saying.

The Juventus man has forged a career from excelling in the No.10 role, showcasing exquisite dribbling skills and an uncanny eye for goal that has seem him rise from mere obscurity at Palermo to a footballing icon at Juventus.

Recent reports have been linking the Argentina international with a move to Liverpool, who are quite clearly in need of some depth in attack with just Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge available as backup.

Are the media letting Jurgen Klopp off lightly for his lack of silverware? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

However, Jurgen Klopp has his formidable attacking trident of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, a trio which works extremely well and would be foolish to disrupt.

This is where the problem lies. Firstly, as aforesaid, the Reds need depth. But it is somewhat of a catch 22 when looking to sign a player to solve this, as any potential arrival would need to understand that they may not be starting week in, week out.

Another issue is replicating Firmino’s role in this system. Few strikers have the mindset that the Brazilian possesses, as he is a player who always puts the team first and finds himself in areas that a forward should be alien to, all to help the team.

Firmino’s tendency to drop deep – very deep – and drag centre-backs infield with him is vital in helping Mane and Salah score the amount of goals that they do; note that the two Africans have both hit 20 goals in successive seasons, whereas Firmino’s tally is a lot lower as he sacrifices personal statistics for the good of the team.

Would Dybala, or anyone else for that matter, arrive at Anfield and immediately throw themselves and their reputation under the bus so Mane and Salah can score goals? Think of it this way: if Dybala arrived in a big-money deal, and only scored around 10 goals, he would be regarded as a flop even if he was allowing Mane and Salah to hit 20 goals yet again.

Firmino’s role is understood well by the Liverpool fans and by most of those interested in the Premier League, and it is a unique one that helps keep the Reds’ attack finely balanced.

In searching for a back-up option, Klopp should perhaps set his sights a little lower than such a huge, world-renowned name like Dybala, in order not to upset the dynamics of the side.

Yes please: West Ham fans urge club to move for Victor Camarasa

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United fans have called on their club to move for midfielder Victor Camarasa in this summer’s transfer window.

The 24-year-old is currently on loan at Cardiff City from Real Betis and has impressed for the Welsh outfit during the 2018-19 campaign.

Indeed, the midfielder has managed five Premier League goals this term, including a strike against West Ham in their league meeting last month.

As it stands, the Spaniard will be heading back to his parent club this summer.

However, ExWHUemployee has claimed that West Ham are considering the 6 ft ace as a potential signing ahead of the 2019-2020 campaign, whilst Marca have also made a similar claim.

The London club’s supporters have caught wind of the news on social media.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

And it would be fair to say that a number want director of football Mario Husillos to pull off a deal for the Betis midfielder in this summer’s transfer window.
