West Ham must swerve Antonio Valencia move

[ad_pod ]

The father of Antonio Valencia has claimed that West Ham are one of the candidates to sign the Manchester United captain at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

What’s the word, then?

Speaking to El Universo, via the Daily Mail, Luis Valencia said that West Ham were in the race alongside Arsenal, Inter Milan and a club from the Chinese Super League.

The 33-year-old has been with United since 2009, making 338 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions.

Valencia has made just five Premier League appearances this term, however, and has only turned out once for the club in 2019.

Despite still being club captain, the Ecuadoran will move on this summer.

West Ham are said in the hunt for the midfielder-turned-defender, but the Hammers should swerve a move for the experienced ace despite his impressive credentials.

Why should West Ham drop their interest?

It seems likely that Pablo Zabaleta will be leaving West Ham this summer when his contract expires.

The Argentine has been a good servant to the London club, but was part of a team that conceded three times against Huddersfield Town on Saturday afternoon.

Ryan Fredericks has had some decent moments in recent weeks, but neither he nor Zabaleta have really convinced in that area of the field.

As a result, the interest in Valencia is not all that surprising; after all, this is a player with an incredible amount of Premier League experience.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

The 5ft 11in ace will be 34 before the new campaign begins, though, and he has hardly kicked a ball over the last few months.

West Ham need to improve their defence in this summer’s transfer window, but Valencia would not be an upgrade on either Zabaleta or Fredericks and therefore the club should be looking elsewhere.

Tottenham fans heap praise on Jan Vertonghen after north London derby draw

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on Jan Vertonghen after the defender played a key role in helping Spurs avoid defeat to Arsenal in the north London derby.

The 6 foot 1 Belgian international put in an impressive display in general, but it was his stoppage time heroics that helped Spurs leave Wembley with a vital point after seemingly being seconds away from defeat that will grab the spotlight.

After Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fluffed his lines from 12 yards, the ball was fizzed back into the box for the Gabonese forward to have another chance, but Vertonghen somehow managed to divert his goal bound effort over the bar.

That isn’t the first time that the 31-year-old has saved his side this season, and it certainly won’t be the last as the former Ajax man emerges as one of Mauricio Pochettino’s most important figures.

Let’s take a look at how the Spurs fans on Twitter reacted to his performance…

Tottenham fans think selling Dembele was a big mistake

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham fans are missing Mousa Dembele after the Lilywhites suffered yet another setback that could well be the nail in the coffin of their title challenge.

Tottenham lost their eighth league match of the season on Wednesday night, falling to a 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge to a revitalised Chelsea side, and they are now eight points behind Manchester City.

While the Blues deserve a lot of credit for bouncing back from their cup final defeat, Mauricio Pochettino will not be happy with his side, as they were poor in all three phases.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min looked out of sorts up front, while Toby Alderweireld, Kieran Trippier and Hugo Lloris all had difficult evenings at the back.

The midfield might just be the biggest problem of all the three though, where Pochettino has just two players to pick from on a regular basis in Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko.

Neither of them covered themselves in glory on Wednesday night, and fans are bashing the decision to sell Dembele.

The Belgian international departed in January for a fee of around £11m, as the 31 year-old was set to be out of contract this summer.

Despite his contract situation, £11m is pocket change for a player who always delivered in the biggest matches, and the Twitter reactions down below are regretting the club’s decision to move him on…

Matthias Ginter could be a great signing for Tottenham

Tottenham may well have said their goodbyes to any chance of silverware this season but that shouldn’t stop them from trying to finish as well as they can.

With the Champions League still being a possibility, albeit a small one, Tottenham must now focus their priorities in order to progress further in that competition, as well as ensuring the finish in the top four this season.

That, wouldn’t be a bad season for Tottenham but to improve they must eye some new players in the summer, after not spending a single penny this season.

Some areas on the pitch demand reinforcements more than others and defence is certainly one of those for Tottenham.

At centre-back, Tottenham could bolster their options by signing Borussia Monchengladbach’s Matthias Ginter.

Ginter, (who is valued at £31.5 million on Transfermarkt) is a player Tottenham should seriously consider investing in.

With both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld extending their stay in Tottenham colours until the summer of 2020, they need to have solutions in mind to just how about they will go about replacing the pair should they leave.

At the age of 25, Matthias Ginter – who has been linked with Spurs and bitter rivals Arsenal by Sky Sports – still has plenty of time left in his footballing career, time that could well be spent helping Tottenham to achieve bigger and better things.

In his 20 appearances this season, Ginter has helped keep seven clean-sheets, as well as supplying one goal at the beginning of the campaign.

His reputation in Germany is a strong one after the capabilities he has shown whilst at Monchengladbach and Dortmund alike, so there is no reason to think that Matthias Ginter wouldn’t be a success at Tottenham. With the new stadium on the way, moving for the enforcer would certainly make for an exciting summer.

Liverpool fans react to Henderson’s England display

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Liverpool fans have been reacting to England’s dominant performance against Czech Republic, and they’ve got plenty to say about Jordan Henderson.

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions kicked off their Euro 2020 qualification campaign in fine style on Friday night, sweeping Czech Republic aside thanks to a Raheem Sterling hat trick.

Wembley was witness to some lovely football in the first half, and it was Henderson, together with Harry Kane, who forged the opening opportunity for Jadon Sancho to lay on a plate for Sterling’s first.

The 5-0 scoreline doesn’t flatter Southgate’s side either – they were first to every ball and better in absolutely every aspect, though their defending at set pieces is cause for concern.

Mo Salah has been brutally mocked for his recent diving antics in a new video by 442oons. Check it out below…

Just as he is at Liverpool, Henderson is the leader in Southgate’s midfield, and his pressing and passing were both top notch against a very weak Czech side.

The Reds skipper led the game in touches with 102 and completed 86 per cent of his passes, per Whoscored.

There are a few on Merseyside who are not too happy though, taking issue with the captain’s departure from the game in Munich and subsequent absence against Fulham after he romped about the Wembley turf at 100 per cent for a full 90 minutes.

Either way, you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Neil Warnock accuses Leeds of having a "soft belly", says they’ll miss out on top two

[ad_pod ]

Former Leeds United manager Neil Warnock has told talkSPORT that Marcelo Bielsa has done a good job with the Yorkshire outfit, but he expects them to miss out on automatic promotion this season after saying they have a “soft belly”.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Cardiff City boss was asked about the club he took charge of between 2012 and 2013 on talkSPORT, and in true Warnock form he certainly didn’t hold back.

Norwich City and Sheffield United currently occupy the top two following the latter’s win at Elland Road last weekend, and the 70-year-old expects it to stay like that while aiming a slight dig at the famous Yorkshire side.

He said: “He’s done a good job, Bielsa, but I think Leeds will miss out.

“I just think Leeds have got a soft belly at times at the back when they’re under pressure, in comparison with the other two.”

Bielsa’s next team talk done for him

The Whites need to bounce back with three points when they host Millwall at the end of the month, but the Argentine should simply pin up Warnock’s words on the dressing room wall pre-match.

It is something that should act as a big motivation for the players, to prove that they are strong and that they can still finish in the top two with a strong set of results at the end of the campaign.

The words of the club’s former manager may well be the catalyst to help Leeds finally get over the line.

Alexis Sanchez’s Manchester United career effectively over after latest injury

Things just can’t go right for Alexis Sanchez at Manchester United, can they?

The Chilean is the latest victim of their “cursed” number 7 jersey, failing to impress even in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s rejuvenated system. Despite improving nearly everyone else, even the ever-smiling Norwegian’s admitted to being unable to do nothing to improve him.

The Chilean’s latest setback is the knee injury he picked up in United’s thrilling win over Southampton. The fact that the players kept on playing trying to get the equalizer, despite seeing him in pain itself spoke volumes of his reputation. After he was replaced with the sizzling Diogo Dalot, United were able to turn things around and record a crucial home win.

Sanchez now faces another two months out with an injury and will return when United’s other injury problems are solved. By consistently underperforming this season, where he’s scored 2 goals in 27 appearances, Sanchez’s completely lost supporters’ faith.

Nobody will want him selected ahead of either Anthony Martial or Jesse Lingard, with many even preferring Dalot ahead of him. Being plagued with so many injuries recently, it’ll be nearly impossible for him to find back his lethal form which lit up Arsenal all those seasons ago.

By piling on United’s wage bill and causing controversies with his enormous wages, Ed Woodward would want to write him off the club’s expenses. We think Sanchez will probably be allowed to leave in the summer, thus ending a frustrating tenure which was never meant to be.

A premature end to one of United’s biggest wastes of money is surely likely. The curse of the number of 7 strikes again.

Marega would kickstart Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City era

The arrival of promising Brendan Rodgers has opened new doors for Leicester City, waving away the doom and gloom of their previous employer.

It has been a sad old season for Leicester City fans who, week after week, watched their title-winning side amble, limp and collapse into absolute mediocrity under former boss Claude Puel.

The Frenchman’s painfully negative football was made even worse by the fact that he had one of the best sides on paper outside the top six – littered with quality young talent such as Ben Chilwell, Demarai Gray, Harvey Barnes, Hamza Choudhury, and James Maddison.

All complimented by the already established players in Jamie Vardy, Harry Maguire, Ricardo Pereira and co.

However, as good as this all is on paper – their extremely poor run of form in 2019 has made it increasingly obvious that they are in dire need of a booster.

A Moussa Marega shaped booster, according to Portuguese outlet Correio da Manha.

Porto’s star forward has been in scintillating form this season scoring 17 goals in 34 games in all competitions, including six in the Champions League.

As far as we are aware, Marega is an incredibly physical player gifted with pace, and though his technical game is a little questionable at times, he more than makes up for it with his ability in front of goal.

Of course, it is always going to be difficult to shake Jamie Vardy from the starting line-up, which is why Marega’s preferred role as a second striker is absolutely ideal.

The 27-year-old would make a far better alternative than current options Kelechi Iheanacho and Shinji Okazaki – that much we are sure of.

Leicester fans, do you think signing another striker should be your priority, and is Marega that man? Let us know in the comments below…

Leyton Orient: O’s can’t afford anymore slips ups going into the business end of the season

Saturday was a reminder that Orient aren’t invincible in the league, and now things are getting serious.

The draw against Barnet signalled the end of the O’s six-game winning run in the National League, with Justin Edinburgh’s side now just one point ahead of Salford City in the league table.

The two games in hand are a massive bonus for the east London side, but now these matches have become must-win events for the club, and from now until the end of the season Edinburgh must be treating each of the remaining seven games as if they are cup finals.

To go along with the literal cup final Orient play against AFC Fylde next month, the O’s have to ensure promotion to League Two is secured as quickly as possible and winning their three games in the span of eight days will be the perfect springboard for the title.

Edinburgh has the talent and squad depth to gain promotion to League Two before the O’s game away to Solihull Moors on the penultimate day of the season, but to ensure a party that day Leyton Orient have to take each game as they come in the National League, and ensure they don’t slip up in any of the remaining games.

Had it not been for the two games in hand Orient have, Saturday’s draw with their London rivals would have been seen as a calamitous day for the club in their bid back into the Football League. Now Edinburgh must rectify that slip up by getting back to winning ways on Tuesday night against Bromley, and a win will make all the difference in the world for the O’s.

Leyton Orient fans, can the O’s get to winning ways on Tuesday? Let us know!
