Kane Williamson has paid tribute to the “incredible” career of his close friend Tim Southee after the pace bowler announced he would retire from Tests after the England series. The careers of Williamson and Southee have run side-by-side from junior and Under-19 level through domestic cricket into to all formats for New Zealand with the pair playing their 100th Tests together against Australia earlier this year, although Williamson made his debut two-and-a-half years after Southee.Related

Southee chuffed about playing last Test series against England and McCullum

Williamson is New Zealand’s leading run-scorer in Test history while Southee is second only to Sir Richard Hadlee on the wickets list with 385 so remains a chance of reaching 400 against England.”Playing so long together, you just go through so much,” Williamson told reporters in Hamilton ahead of his first game for Northern Districts since 2019 where Southee will also line up. “Both doing stints in leadership roles and you go through different turbulent times, then you have some good ones as well and they are all part of the experience. To do it as long as Tim has is incredible as a fast bowler, there’s not many in the history of the game who have been able to achieve what he has. Such a huge member [and] leader of our side and a close friend as well.”While New Zealand’s historic 3-0 victory in India suggests there could be plenty of good times ahead for the current team, Southee’s retirements marks the latest departure from an era of players that brought considerable success following the likes of Ross Taylor, BJ Watling, Colin de Grandhomme and Neil Wagner while Trent Boult no longer features in Tests after stepping away from a central contract and has also retired from T20Is.”It’s life, isn’t it. You do realise you are closer towards the end than the start which is a certainty,” Williamson said. “It’s [about] navigating those periods because you feel slightly different when you play your first game to when you play your 100th and there’s different levels of excitement, your life changes a little bit, whether that’s family, extra dogs, whatever it is you are into, so the picture does take a slightly different shape and your motivation does adjust.”There’s sadness, but excitement as well for Tim because the end of your time in a sporting professional environment is scary but there’s so much more to come.”Williamson, who will return from a groin injury against England after missing the whole series in India, also turned down an NZC contract this year but remains committed across formats. He termed the victory in India one of New Zealand’s “all-time cricketing memories” although added missing out on being part of it was challenging at times with his fitness assessed on a Test-by-Test basis before it was decided he wasn’t ready.”It was a lot of internal temptation [to try and get there], for sure, then after a few discussions it was keep taking that time to get it right so that’s what I did,” he said. “Suffered a little bit of FOMO, which is a good thing, but just admired it really. To go over and play the way they did, so special, one of our all-time cricketing memories.”Williamson’s groin injury was picked up running between the wickets in the second innings of the second Test in Galle and he admitted the body needed more looking after in the latter stages of his career.”It’s not major, which is good,” he said. “Think post knee [injury] there’s always little curlys that bob their heads so actually making sure I keep putting that time in. For so long you feel invincible, and I’ve certainly had a few reminders that’s not the case recently and making sure that I’m staying on top of all those things and keeping the body in check.”

Their new Rice: West Ham now in the mix to sign PL "monster" for Potter

West Ham United head into the new season with a renewed sense of optimism.

After finishing 14th in the Premier League last season with just 43 points, the club has made it clear that progress is needed.

Graham Potter, who replaced Julen Lopetegui in January, has brought fresh ideas.

The former Chelsea boss signed a two-and-a-half-year contract and immediately faced the challenge of steadying a side that had been struggling under his predecessor.

Despite inheriting a squad lacking in depth in crucial areas, Potter has tried to lay the foundations for a more resilient West Ham side. The Hammers have already moved to secure several key additions.

Lucas Paqueta, cleared of betting allegations, will be keen to repay the club’s support with strong performances this season. The club has also added the likes of El Hadji Diouf, Mads Hermansen, Kyle Walker-Peters, and Callum Wilson.

Mohamed Kudus, a key figure in West Ham’s previous campaigns, has departed to Spurs for £55 million, creating both a gap in midfield quality and an opportunity for fresh talent to step in.

Despite these changes, one of the club’s ambitions this summer remains shoring up their midfield in a way that can transform their competitiveness in the Premier League.

West Ham have reportedly set their sights on a player widely regarded as potentially their best midfielder since Declan Rice.

West Ham eyeing move for Premier League midfielder

Yves Bissouma is a 28-year-old central midfielder currently on the books at Tottenham Hotspur who is attracting West Ham’s gaze, according to Sacha Tavolieri.

The report claims that the Hammers are one of the clubs in the race to potentially land the midfield maestro, alongside Premier League rivals Everton.

Having joined Spurs from Brighton in 2022 for £25m, this “absolute monster” has demonstrated his quality over 100 appearances, scoring six goals and contributing three assists.

Yet, despite these solid contributions, he has found himself on the fringes of the Spurs first team, mirroring the situation faced by other high-profile players in need of a fresh start.

Football Insider recently reported that Spurs would only allow Bissouma to leave if a replacement could be found, and it now appears increasingly likely that the player will depart this summer.

Palhinha has joined on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich, while the club eyes Atlético Madrid’s Conor Gallagher as a potential replacement. Gallagher’s reported £40m price tag has not deterred Spurs, though Madrid remain reluctant to sell.

The timing could be perfect for both player and club. With his contract expiring in 2026, Spurs may view a summer sale as their last opportunity to recoup investment on a player who has yet to consistently feature in Thomas Frank’s plans.

For West Ham, landing a midfielder of Bissouma’s calibre would represent a statement of intent, addressing a key area of the pitch that has long required reinforcement.

The Declan Rice benchmark

West Ham fans will naturally draw comparisons to Declan Rice, who left the club for Arsenal in a £100m deal.

Rice, a product of the West Ham academy, played 245 times for the Hammers, scoring 15 goals and assisting 13, per Transfermarkt.

He flourished under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal, proving his value not only defensively but as a driver of forward momentum.

In terms of statistics, Rice excelled in progressive carries per 90 (94th percentile, 2.66), shot-creating actions (81st percentile, 3.25), and touches in the attacking penalty area (90th percentile, 2.68), per FBref.

While Bissouma does not directly replicate Rice’s profile, he offers similar defensive reliability and the ability to influence the tempo of matches.

Rice’s departure left a void that West Ham have struggled to fill adequately, and Bissouma represents a realistic and attainable option to fill it.

His presence could elevate the team both defensively and in possession, giving Potter the balance required to implement a more consistent game plan.

According to FBref, he ranks in the 83rd percentile for pass completion (88.6%), 91st percentile for tackles (3.09 per 90 minutes), 83rd percentile for interceptions (1.39), and 92nd percentile for clearances (2.65).

His style has been likened to the likes of Boubacar Kamara at Aston Villa, blending defensive solidity with the capacity to drive the ball forward and influence transitions.

West Ham already have several players in the central midfield area, including Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse, and Tomas Soucek.

The addition of Bissouma would give Potter a more dynamic and versatile selection, with a player capable of shielding the defence, winning duels, and contributing to attacks.

With West Ham intent on competing not only for league stability but also for European football, adding a midfielder of Bissouma’s calibre could be transformative.

As West Ham prepare for the new season, they face an opening fixture at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.

Yet, with the summer window moving quickly and Bissouma reportedly nearing the exit from Spurs, Potter could soon have an ideal addition to his midfield.

Potter's own Xhaka: West Ham now targeting "technically gifted" £15m star

FESTA DO GLORIOSO NO FIM DO PRIMEIRO TEMPO

Baroda's 349 for 5 breaks world record for highest T20 total

Baroda broke the record for the highest total in men’s T20 cricket when they smashed 349 for 5 against Sikkim in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Indore on Thursday. They surpassed Zimbabwe’s 344 for 4 against Gambia in Nairobi in October. In all, Baroda hit 37 sixes in their innings, shattering another T20 record. Zimbabwe were the holders of the record for most sixes (27) in an innings – also in that game against Gambia.Related

Shashwat Rawat, who was recently part of the India A side in the Duleep Trophy, and Abhimanyusingh Rajput, who clattered a 19-ball half-century, set the platform for Baroda’s mammoth total with a 92-run opening partnership inside the powerplay. Bhanu Pania launched from that platform and went on to hit a century off 42 balls, including five fours and 15 sixes. He scored his first fifty off 20 balls and second off 22 balls. This was Pania’s first hundred in white-ball domestic cricket, in his 39th innings. He remained unbeaten on 134 off 51 balls, going at a strike rate of 262.75.

Shivalik Sharma and wicketkeeper-batter Vishnu Solanki also joined the run-spree, scoring half-centuries of their own. Shivalik hit 55 off 17 balls and Solanki 50 off 16 balls. Solanki fell in the 17th over when Baroda were ten short of 300, and though Hardik Pandya missed this game, Baroda still ended up breaking the world record. Four of the seven bowlers Sikkim used conceded at 20 or more per over.Chasing 350, Sikkim managed only 86 for 7 in their 20 overs, with only two of their batters passing 15. Spinners Krunal Pandya, Ninad Rathva and Mahesh Pithiya picked up five wickets among them. Baroda wrapped up a 263-run win, the fourth biggest, in terms of runs, in T20 cricket.Baroda have dominated the domestic season so far, topping Group A in the Ranji Trophy, with four outright wins in five games. In the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, they have won six out of their seven games so far.

Tottenham now "ready" to meet club's demands for "outrageous" £40m attacker

Tottenham Hotspur are now ready to meet a rival Premier League club’s demands and sign an “outrageous” attacker, according to journalist Sebastien Vidal.

Tottenham ramping up attacking midfielder pursuit after Maddison blow

With the new Premier League season set to get underway this weekend, Tottenham fans are justified in feeling a little disappointed by their activity in the transfer window, having made very few major additions to the squad this summer.

Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso have completed permanent moves to north London after initial loan spells, but otherwise Spurs have been quiet, with Mohammed Kudus the only other high-profile addition.

Having secured Champions League qualification, it is frustrating that Daniel Levy & co haven’t been able to strike while the iron is hot and bring in some top players, missing out on Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White last month.

Spurs have now held talks over the signing of an attacking midfielder.

Not only that, but the Lilywhites have now lost Son Heung-min and James Maddison, with the former joining LAFC and the latter set for a significant spell on the treatment table after suffering an ACL injury.

Consequently, there is an even more pressing need to bring in a new attacking midfielder, and Tottenham are now ramping up their interest in multiple players, with Leicester City’s Bilal El Khannouss and Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze named as potential options.

Manchester City’s James McAtee and Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott are also of interest, and Spurs are now “ready” to meet the Reds’ demands for the young Englishman, according to an update from Vidal on X.

England's James McAtee applauds fans after the match asHarveyElliottlooks on

The journalist states that Thomas Frank’s side are looking to “boost their attacking creativity”, and a move for Elliott could be on the cards, with the 22-year-old in line to receive regular game time if he moves to north London.

There is a feeling that Liverpool will sanction the England U21 international’s departure this summer, and a £40m fee has been touted.

"Outrageous" Elliott could be ideal Eze alternative

There is certainly no shortage of exciting options on Tottenham’s shortlist, with Eze perhaps chief amongst them, having outperformed the other targets in terms of attacking contributions in the Premier League last season.

However, the Crystal Palace star is also the most senior player at 27-years-old, meaning he received more game time, and it could be difficult for Spurs to win the race, given that Arsenal are thought to be closing in on a deal, having agreed a £55m fee.

Elliott could be the best option out of the remaining targets, given that he has been lauded as “outrageous” by scout Jacek Kulig in the past, while the Liverpool ace also has experience in the Champions League.

As such, it is exciting news that Tottenham are ready to meet Liverpool’s demands, and a fee of around £40m seems reasonable.

World Cricketers Association calls out 'random and inconsistent' support for Afghanistan women

Tom Moffat says ICC and national governing bodies can “exercise leverage” without boycotts

Global cricket needs to move away from “random and inconsistent,” outbursts of support for Afghanistan’s exiled women’s cricketers and towards a “systematic global approach.” That’s the view of the global player body, the World Cricketers Association (WCA) whose CEO Tom Moffat has called the exclusion of women’s players in any country “unacceptable.”In the same week that an Afghan Women’s XI will come together for the first time to play against a Cricket Without Borders team at the Junction Oval in Australia, Moffat spoke to ESPNcricinfo about possible collective action which he says “doesn’t necessarily mean boycotts,” but should include both the ICC and individual boards.”The ICC and national governing bodies run and regulate the game and their tournaments, and have a responsibility to exercise leverage to ensure that the rights of players in our sport, including Afghanistan women’s players, are protected and respected,” Moffat said. “That doesn’t necessarily mean boycotts, there are a number of ways to exercise leverage, but to date the random and inconsistent manner of dealing with it, and of even having the conversation around the world, highlights the need for cricket’s governing bodies to implement a more systematic global approach to protecting basic player rights, along with just about every other aspect of the sport.”Related

South Africa sports minister: Afghanistan at Champions Trophy is 'hypocritical and immoral'

Afghanistan, who have been a Full Member since 2017, does not have a women’s team but was developing one before the Taliban takeover in 2021. In 2020, the ACB contracted 25 women’s players but they never played an international. Under the Taliban regime, women have been banned from participating in sport and there have been increasing restrictions on them in all aspects of public life including education and access to healthcare. The crackdown on women’s rights has drawn criticism from several international organisations including Amnesty International and the United Nations, and though there are asset freezes on some Taliban officials, there are no sporting bans in place. Afghanistan remain members of FIFA and the ICC, to name two global bodies and sent a team of three men and three women, who were living in exile and were not recognised by the Taliban government, to last year’s Paris Olympics.Currently, Australia are the only country who have cancelled bilateral engagements against Afghanistan while England have said they will do the same. Both countries continue to play Afghanistan in ICC events, even as calls to boycott those games grow.In England, a cross-party parliamentary group >wrote to the ECB strongly urging the men’s team and officials to, “speak out against the horrific treatment of women and girls in Afghanistan,” and to consider not playing Afghanistan in their Champions Trophy fixture on February 26. In response, the ECB CEO Richard Gould called for “a coordinated, ICC-wide approach,” which is similar to Moffat’s stance.Similarly, South Africa, who are also grouped with Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy, have received backlash from their sports minister Gayton McKenzie, who compared the Taliban’s treatment of women to Apartheid.Cricket South Africa have actively sought out fixtures against Afghanistan and played them in an ODI series in Sharjah last September and maintain that shunning the men’s team will not have a material impact on the situation facing women in Afghanistan. South Africa’s stance is important because they have first-hand experience of being banned from the 1970s to 1990s and sporting isolation (along with economic sanctions) was a significant contributor to the fall of Apartheid. However, CSA is of the opinion that it will take more than a cricket boycott to force the Taliban to recognise women’s rights.

While there is a need to acknowledge that the freedom to play sport is one of many that have been taken away from Afghan women and girls, there is also a desire from organisations like the WCA to underline how crucial that right is.”Every athlete has the right to equality of opportunity which is protected in the Universal Declaration of Player Rights, underpinned by international law,” Moffat said. “That means each player has the right to equality of opportunity in the pursuit of sport, free of discrimination, harassment and violence, and a player’s right to pursue sport cannot be limited because of his or her gender.”As these rights are not being extended to women and girls in Afghanistan, the WCA reiterated that it is “absolutely supportive of any player who wants to speak up on this issue.” Several Afghan men’s players including Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, have spoken out about the need for education to be available to everyone but have not said anything in support of female cricketers, despite their pleas for support. It is understood that many of the Afghan men’s players have family in the country and fear retribution for speaking out, especially as they have little protection. As things stand, Afghanistan does not have a player association but some of the men’s players are part of the WCA’s global commercial program.

Worse than Idah: Rodgers must drop Celtic star who lost the ball 20 times

Celtic will be playing Europa League football this season after they were beaten 3-2 on penalties by Kairat Almaty in the Champions League play-off clash on Tuesday night.

The Hoops had drawn 0-0 at Parkhead last week, failing to make the most of home advantage, and then failed to get the job done in normal time or extra-time away from home, which led to a loss on penalties.

Adam Idah, Luke McCowan, and Daizen Maeda all missed from the spot for Brendan Rodgers, and it will not have done Idah’s confidence any good after a disappointing start to the season.

Why this will knock Adam Idah's confidence

The Ireland international is yet to get off the mark with a goal this term. In four games in all competitions, the former Norwich City marksman has missed three ‘big chances’ and failed to register a goal or an assist for the team.

He has not proven that he has what it takes to be the main number nine for Celtic as a regular starter, and this latest performance against Kairat will not have helped his confidence.

In his defence, though, his performance after coming off the bench before the penalty shoot-out was not horrendous. He created two chances for his teammates and won two of his three aerial battles to provide an outlet for the team, per Sofascore, but then the striker missed from the spot in the shoot-out.

Performance in Numbers

Want data and stats? Football FanCast’s Performance in Numbers series provides you with the latest match analysis from across Europe.

Despite his penalty miss, though, Idah was not the worst performer for the Hoops on the night. One other player who should be dropped from the team because of their showing is Hyun-jun Yang.

Why Rodgers must drop Yang for Celtic

Rodgers must ruthlessly ditch the South Korea international from the starting XI for the clash with Rangers on Sunday because he put in a poor display on Tuesday evening.

The 23-year-old winger was selected to play off the left flank for the Scottish Premiership giants, with Maeda through the middle and James Forrest on the right, and failed to do enough on or off the ball to impress.

Yang played the opening 70 minutes of the match and did not register a single shot or goal, nor did he create a single chance for his teammates at the top end of the pitch. Whereas, as aforementioned, Idah created two chances for the side after he came off the bench.

As you can see in the table above, the South Korean flop performance was even worse than Idah’s in general play before the penalty shoot-out miss from the striker, as he performed worse in duels, gave the ball away way more, and was less creative.

The Hoops winger did not offer anywhere near enough in any phase of the game to justify his continued inclusion in the starting XI, particularly with a clash against Rangers away from home in their next match in the Premiership.

Michel-Ange Balikwisha is reportedly closing in on a move to Celtic from Royal Antwerp to bolster Rodgers’ options on the flanks, and this means that the manager may have another player to pick from on Sunday.

With this in mind, the Northern Irish boss should ruthlessly drop Yang from the line-up after his dismal showing on Tuesday, to potentially throw Balikwisha in at the deep end this weekend.

Italian swear words and living on Lake Garda! How Jamie Vardy and wife Rebekah are settling into life abroad following Leicester icon's move to Serie A side Cremonese

Jamie Vardy is embracing a new challenge in Serie A, with it revealed that the ex-England international is living in a £2 million villa on Lake Garda while Italian lessons are teaching him “colourful swear words”. The veteran frontman has stepped out of his comfort zone after reaching the end of his contract at Leicester City and becoming a free agent.

Vardy ready to emulate evergreen Ronaldo

At 38 years of age, and with no plans to retire any time soon, Vardy has signed an initial one-year contract with Cremonese – with that deal including the option for a further 12-month extension, which would take him into his 40s.

Vardy snubbed interest from a number of teams in British football, having reportedly registered on the recruitment radar of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at Wrexham, and is loving his new life in picturesque surroundings.

Vardy already knows Italian swear words

He is said to be undertaking “intensive” language lessons, alongside wife Rebekah, with a source telling : “Jamie and Becky are already loving Italian life, and doing all they can to blend in seamlessly. The whole family is having Italian lessons, and Jamie is already au fait with some of the more colourful swear words. ‘Vaffanculo’ is his current fave; he actually knows most swear words in most languages – he is quite the polymath.

“People close to them thought Jamie would base himself out there for the season and Becky and the kids would stay as they are – but in the end they’ve decided to throw themselves in at the deep end as a family.

“Actually she really fell in love with the place a year or so ago when they went there on holiday, and it's early days but they are super happy – it's all going really well, and they've made some great new pals.”

Rebekah and her five children are yet to join Jamie in Italy on a full-time basis, with Vardy having told reporters of an elongated moving process: “They're not here yet at this moment. You have to go through all the procedures to get visas and things like that. But they're really looking forward to it. A real buzz and excitement, especially with getting to learn a new language as well. So, as a whole, we can't wait.”
