Inside Man Utd's new state-of-the-art £50m training ground: Smart urinals to test hydration, a padel court requested by players and underwater treadmills

The Red Devils have finally caught up with their rivals after a year of upheaval at Carrington and GOAL has taken a look inside the revamped facility.

Cristiano Ronaldo sounded the alarm in his final bombshell interview as a Manchester United player and less than three years later the club has heeded the call, unveiling a completely revamped training centre on Friday. And Diogo Dalot believes that his Portugal team-mate and former club companion would be happy with the results. He might even send Ronaldo pictures of the £50m ($67m) makeover, which United firmly believe has brought them into line with their main rivals, if he asks to see it.

"I'm sure he would love it if he would be able to see it. But overall I think the message was clear that this club deserved even more," Dalot told reporters at the opening of the renovated training facility at Carrington. "We've been waiting for a long time at the club, so all credit to Sir Jim and his team. I think they did an unbelievable job and I think finally we're getting to a level where this club deserves and now it's up to us to, on the pitch, also match that standard."

United's players spent last season training at the women's and academy facilities while work was completed on their building but the project was completed on budget and on time, more than a week before the new campaign. Sir Jim Ratcliffe cut the ribbon to open the new facility in a ceremony attended by the whole squad and coaching staff.

Sir Alex Ferguson was also there and he unveiled a plaque to the late Kath Phipps, the club's receptionist who served United for 55 years and in the words of the legendary manager, "this was her life, every day."

As well as honouring the club's past, this was about taking the club into the future. Ratcliffe said: "This is one of the most recognised brands in the world, it stands shoulder to shoulder with Coca-Cola and Apple. The club has to compete at the highest level that is appropriate to the size and history of the club. While a world class training facility won’t take us to that position alone, it is one of the key ingredients in the modern facility. Now we have one."

The facility has been carefully designed to take United back to being the elite club they were when Carrington opened in 2000 – the year after the Red Devils won the treble. In the words of Dalot: "What I like the most is now there's going to be no excuses."

And GOAL has taken a tour of the building, getting an inside view of how players and staff will benefit from the new facilities. And here are the things that stood out the most…

  • Nigel Young/Foster + Partners

Smart urinals in the dressing room

One of the most important areas in the revamped facility is the first team changing room. It is roomier than before and each player has a digital screen in their allotted space showing the agenda for the week. There is more natural light than before, while there is also a private space within the changing room for players to take calls.

Alejandro Garnacho and Antony still have spaces in the changing room despite being up for sale and not currently training with the squad. So too does Jadon Sancho although he does not have a squad number.

The bathrooms within the changing rooms are no usual bathrooms. They contain 'smart' urinals, which can measure whether a player is dehydrated and tell them how much liquid to intake to get back to ideal hydration levels.

There is also a separate changing room for players who are based at the academy but training with the first team and trying to break into Ruben Amorim's side. The likes of Diego Leon, Chido Obi and Sekou Kone will be making use of it until they establish themselves in the team.

    Brighter medical area

A lot of United players have spent significant periods of time recovering from injury recently, with Mason Mount missing big chunks of the campaign and Lisandro Martinez's season being ended in February with a serious knee injury. Andre Onana got injured in the first week of pre-season training although he should be able to face Arsenal on the opening weekend. The good news is that injured players will be able to use vastly improved facilities and a much more welcoming space to nurse their ailments and get back to action.

The previous medical room at Carrington has been described as "a dungeon" but the new area is far brighter, which is designed to improve wellness and help players recover on a psychological level. The medical room is located opposite the training pitches. This is to encourage injured players to get back to action soon although if the sight of watching their team-mates train in front of them is too much, they can pull down the blinds.

Many injured players have tended to conduct their recovery away from the club, often abroad. But the club now hope that the improved facilities will encourage stricken players to get back to full fitness at Carrington.

    Padel court for the players

The players were asked their opinions on what they wanted at the facility and they all decided to petition for a padel court. Many players, in particular Dalot, are keen padel players, as is Amorim and several of his coaches.

The court has not yet been built but once it is finished players will be more likely to want to stay at the training ground after their usual sessions are finished.

    Barber shop & F1 simulator

The players' lounge is a wide open space facing the training pitches, which can be viewed from an outside balcony when the weather is nice as well as through the giant windows. A huge dining area is the main feature of the players' area but there is also a barber shop and a Formula One simulator. The idea is for the players to feel comfortable around the training ground so they want to remain there and bond as a team.

Dalot explained: "Ultimately, we're talking about our second home, which is where we spend the most time after our personal homes with our families. So I think you should be able to feel good once you come in. I think these facilities right now are exactly what we thought it would be and even better."

Dalot, incidentally, was the first player to make use of the barber shop to get a fresh trim.

Simarjeet and Gaikwad keep CSK's campaign alive

CSK’s bowlers executed their plans perfectly on a slow pitch to consign Royals to their third straight defeat

Sidharth Monga12-May-20241:19

‘Royals were a batter short so couldn’t take risk’

Chennai Super Kings signed off their home league campaign with a win, giving themselves a decent chance of coming back to Chennai for the last two playoff games. Despite losing their 11th toss out of 13 and being asked to field in the afternoon heat 40 hours after finishing their last match in Ahmedabad, the CSK bowlers used a slow pitch expertly to keep Rajasthan Royals down to 141, which they chased down with relative ease. The slow pitch was right up the home bowlers’ alley, and they kept Royals quiet in a wicketless powerplay after which Simarjeet Singh kept getting wickets every time Royals tried to push back. Royals never really succeeded in mounting an attack, which CSK’s New Zealand batters, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell, successfully did to put their chase on course with a Shivam Dube putting them on top.Related

Samson: Losses make it 'challenging to focus on the controllables'

As it happened – Royals slip to third straight defeat

The win took CSK up to 14 points from 13 matches, level with Sunrisers Hyderabad who have a game in hand, and two points clear of the nearest challengers outside the top four. Royals suffered their third straight defeat, which will be a cause for concern for them going into the playoffs, especially with Jos Buttler not expected to be available for the final week.RR’s power-less-play
These are the two slowest teams in the first two overs of the IPL. They like to suss the pitch out before they start attacking. Royals stayed true to form, scoring just seven off the first two, but they couldn’t kick on even after that with Tushar Deshpande, Maheesh Theekshana and Shardul Thakur giving them nothing to drive. Their 42 for 0 was the slowest wicketless powerplay of IPL 2024, one run behind their 43 for 0 against Punjab Kings, but that came in a small chase.Simarjeet Singh exults after dismissing Jos Buttler•BCCI

Simarjeet cashes in
Usually CSK go to Ravindra Jadeja in the seventh over, but perhaps because of the right-left combination, which didn’t let their orthodox spinners bowl in their last match against Gujarat Titans, they bowled Simarjeet in the seventh over. Playing only his third match this year, Simarjeet had ground to make up after going for 60 in that Titans match. On this slow pitch, he was immediately on target: hard lengths and no room. When Yashasvi Jaiswal tried to take him on, the ball got big on him and resulted in a skier to cover. In his next over, Simarjeet became the beneficiary of an odd shot from a frustrated Buttler: a ramp on a slow pitch with fine leg back on the fence. With Royals’ only left-hand top-order batter gone, Jadeja rattled through his four overs for just 24 runs to go with Theekshana’s four overs for 28. Sanju Samson just kept looking for singles while Riyan Parag tried the odd boundary. It seemed as if Royals had decided they needed to get somewhere around 160 and not aim too high. The final kick doesn’t arrive
Even to get to 160, they would need two a ball for the last six overs after getting to 89 for 2 in 14 overs, which is when the spinners bowled out. Royals were banking on cashing in on pace, but just when they tried to go hard they handed Simarjeet another wicket: Samson caught at mid-off. Again Royals were pushed back.Deshpande and Thakur stuck to their plans in the death overs, and Royals never got the big overs. Only Parag’s 47 off 35 took them to 141, which was 23 less than the lowest total successfully defended in this IPL. Royals attacked just 30 balls in their innings, the sixth-lowest figure this season in non-all-out innings when setting a target.Shivam Dube played a crucial cameo after CSK had gone 39 balls without a boundary•Associated Press

Ravindra, Mitchell get chase going
CSK have been the only team slower than Royals in the early goings but they were mindful of not letting the bowlers settle into their defence. Ravindra flicked Sandeep Sharma for a six over midwicket in the second over, and went after compatriot Trent Boult in the third. Even though R Ashwin got Ravindra out in the fourth, Mitchell kept up the intent. Their 56 for 1 was their fourth-highest powerplay of this IPL.Royals claw back but Dube breaks chase open
In the middle overs, Royals clawed their way back. Yuzvendra Chahal got Mitchell, the spinners kept Moeen Ali and Ruturaj Gaikwad quiet, Moeen got out for 10 off 13, and 39 balls went without a boundary. Still it was 50 needed off seven overs. This was when Ashwin came on to bowl his last over with Dube on strike. Dube took the veteran spinner on for 6, 4, 4, with a leg-side wide in between, and while Ashwin came back with Dube’s wicket, CSK needed 35 off the last six.Captain Gaikwad stayed true to his anchor role for this chase, and saw his team home despite Jadeja getting himself out obstructing the field.

Simon Harmer takes four as Essex rout Kent by an innings

Essex are now just two points behind Division One leaders Surrey, who lost to Hampshire on Sunday

ECB Reporters Network27-May-2024Essex have routed Kent by an innings and 96 runs in the Vitality County Championship at Canterbury.Simon Harmer took 4 for 32 and Shane Snater 3 for 15 as the visitors skittled Kent for 109 in their second innings, to cut the gap to Championship leaders Surrey to just two points.Joe Denly’s 23 was Kent’s highest score, and the hosts are destined to finish this round of fixtures at the bottom of the Division One table if Lancashire avoid defeat against Warwickshire at Old Trafford.Kent were 197 behind going into the final day and home fans were hoping that a combination of the grit shown on day three and a biblical weather forecast might see them escape with a draw. They were severely disappointed. There was torrential rain almost everywhere else in the county but play began on time and Kent endured a gruesome morning session, the tone for which was set when Zak Crawley survived just four balls before he was lbw to Snater.Essex threw the ball to Harmer after just 12 overs and he struck with his third delivery to get Ben Compton lbw for 12. Marcus O’Riordan was next to go, making nine from 25 balls before Harmer had him caught at short leg by Nick Browne.Daniel Bell-Drummond was lbw to Matt Critchley for 20 in the next over, the 20th, and Harry Finch inexplicably tried to reverse sweep Harmer while on 4 and was lbw, although in mitigation, he seemed to have been hit outside the line.Kent were 64 for 5 at lunch, after which there was a mere 10-minute delay for rain.Denly and Joey Evison at least offered some resistance, but having dealt with the spinners fairly comfortably Evison was lbw to Snater for 16. Snater then sent Grant Stewart’s off stump cartwheeling for one to claim his hundredth first class wicket for Essex.Denly tried to drive Harmer but was caught by Aaron Beard for 23. With Wes Agar unable to bat, the victory was confirmed when Critchley got Parkinson LBW for 10 in the 58th over.

Australia replace India as No. 1 Test team in ICC rankings after annual update

Australia have replaced India as the No. 1 Test team in the ICC men’s rankings after the annual update. India, though, have retained the top spot in the ODI and T20I rankings. In this cycle, the matches played only after May 2021 are taken into consideration for the ranking, which means India’s 2-1 series win in Australia in December 2020-January 2021 has dropped out. All results between May 2021 and May 2023 are weighted at 50%, while the ones in the following 12 months are weighted at 100%.As a result, Australia, who also won the World Test Championship last year, now have 124 rating points, four clear of second-placed India (118), and 19 ahead of third-placed England (105). They have, however, been advised to slow down and draw up longer terms plans. Ex-Football League star Rory Delap – father of Chelsea striker Liam – has said at the launch of : "There will be a lot of hype around Wrexham and Birmingham and it’ll be interesting to see how they handle what is a massive leap from League One to the Championship. Avoiding relegation would be a good season for Wrexham, but with Birmingham it’s a bit different because they’ve got players with Championship experience.

"So far, it seems like Birmingham have a bit more Championship pedigree than Wrexham. A lot of people are predicting automatic promotion for Birmingham, but it will still be a tough season for them – they’ll be in and around the play-offs though. Wrexham will be focusing first and foremost on staying in the Championship. Then they’ll be able to kick on in the next season or two."

'He thought I was an idiot and why the hell had they signed me?' – Big time Real Madrid flop explains why he made 'embarrassing' decision to wear a fur coat to transfer unveiling

Antonio Cassano looked back on his disastrous Real Madrid stint, admitting to weight fines, regrets and turning up to his unveiling in a fur coat.

Admits fur coat was a shocking choiceJoined Real Madrid in 2006 after Roma riseKnown more for antics than football in SpainFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Italian forward Cassano has reflected on his ill-fated Real Madrid stint, revealing why he believes club legend and sporting director Emilio Butragueno thought he was an “idiot” after turning up to his unveiling in a fur coat. The outspoken Italian, who joined Los Blancos in 2006, admitted he made a “madman” decision during his arrival in Spain, which immediately shaped the perception of him inside the club. Cassano’s story came from a revealing interview where he opened up about the first impressions he left, and why, in hindsight, he agrees with them.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Cassano’s time at Madrid remains one of the most chaotic chapters of his career. Despite his undoubted talent, he failed to make an impact in Spain due to poor discipline, lack of fitness and personal clashes. The anecdote about his fur coat perfectly captures the culture clash and lack of professionalism that derailed his stint at the Bernabeu. While the likes of Butragueno embodied the old-guard values of the club, Cassano’s flamboyance and unpredictability didn’t align, making his Madrid spell more memorable for off-field stories than footballing achievements.

AFPWHAT CASSANO SAID

Recalling the moment he first met Butragueno, the former Italy international painted a vivid picture of his eccentric debut: "Great, Butragueno. Polite, very shy, calm. Always reserved. I remember arriving [in Madrid after his signing] with a fur coat that, my goodness… I'm embarrassed. And he said: 'Please, tomorrow put on a suit'. I told him to relax, but then I thought that these people had signed me knowing that I'm crazy. And I went with that coat. They introduced me to Di Stefano, another legend. And I remember Emilio looking at me, petrified, and I think that in his head, Butragueno believed that I was an idiot, an imbecile, and why the hell had they signed me. And today I agree with him. Because only a madman like me could do something like that."

Cassano made just 29 appearances and scored four goals during a chaotic 18-month spell at Madrid. He was suspended for disrespecting coach Fabio Capello, claimed on air he’d walk back to Italy to rejoin Roma, suffered injuries and was eventually loaned to Sampdoria. His time in Spain was also marred by poor fitness, Cassano admitted to gaining 14kg and receiving weekly fines for being overweight. Despite his flop at Madrid, he revived his career in Italy, winning Serie A with AC Milan and playing a key role in the Azzurri's run to the Euro 2012 final.

The former defender captained Mourinho's Porto to Champions League success in 2004 and played 530 games in all competitions, winning 50 caps for Portugal along the way. Mourinho spoke about Costa at a press conference ahead of Fenerbahce's Champions League qualifier against Feyenoord and paid tribute to his former skipper.

    MOURINHO'S EMOTIONAL TRIBUTE

He told reporters: "It's part of my history that goes. You have captains and you have leaders. It's not always about the armband but what you represent. And Jorge was one of these guys who cleaned the garbage and let the coach do his job as a coach. That's perfection for a coach when his captain does this work. Of course, I'm very sad it's part of my history that goes. But let's forget football, let's focus on him, on Jorge, on his kids, who I met when they were really kids, but now are grown men. So of course I am very sad.

"And I'm here now because if he could speak with me now he would tell me, come on, do your press conference. And he would say tomorrow play the game Mister, win the game and forget about me. That would be Jorge. So that's what I'm going to try and do, do my job today, do my job tomorrow and then cry after. But today and tomorrow I have a job to do and I know Jorge would tell me to do my job."
