Shami and Kohli put unbeaten India top of the table

India’s pace attack played a starring role in bowling NZ out for 273 despite Mitchell’s ton

Pujara: Shami is ‘always mentally ready’ for games

They were without their most irreplaceable player in a top-of-the-table clash against a New Zealand side that’s had the wood over them in recent global-tournament meetings, and this New Zealand side put them under severe pressure on multiple occasions. But in the end, India continued to typify the 2023 World Cup equivalent of Gary Lineker’s famous quote on a superteam from a different sport: “Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and in the end, the Germans always win.”We’re still only halfway through the league stage, and knockouts are knockouts, but India have looked so hard to beat that even this game, their most intense tussle yet in this tournament, ended with Virat Kohli trying to repeat what he did against Bangladesh on Thursday, and refuse singles with India in sight of victory in order to try and reach his hundred. It didn’t quite happen this time, with the attempted winning six on 95 ending up as a catch on the midwicket boundary, but India sauntered home nonetheless, with Ravindra Jadeja pulling Matt Henry for four to complete the job with two overs to spare. Jadeja made an unbeaten 39, a vital innings given that he came in at No. 7 with India still 83 away from victory. With Hardik Pandya out injured, India replaced him with two players, a specialist batter in Suryakumar Yadav and a specialist fast bowler in Mohammed Shami, which meant India’s batting effectively ended with Jadeja at No. 7.The lack of batting depth was counterbalanced, however, by the increased menace of India’s pace attack, who played a starring role in bowling New Zealand out for 273 after they had been 178 for 2 at one stage. Shami, playing his first game of the tournament, led the way with his second five-wicket haul in World Cups, his bullying of New Zealand’s lower order the centerpiece of a superlative effort by India in the last 10 overs, where they took six wickets while conceding just 54.Particularly impressive was India’s shackling of Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand’s top scorer. Mitchell had put on 159 for the third wicket with Rachin Ravindra, and reached an exactly run-a-ball hundred in the 41st over, but India kept him to just 30 off his last 27 balls. He was ninth out in the final over, caught on the wide long-on boundary to give Shami his fifth wicket.Daryl Mitchell brought up ODI century No. 5•ICC/Getty Images

Each of Shami’s wickets seemed to come with a question attached to it: “You’re keeping on the bench?” He struck first ball after coming on as first change, getting Will Young to play on with a typically upright-seamed inducker. Then he broke the Mitchell-Ravindra stand with an offcutter into the pitch. And he ended New Zealand’s hopes of getting near or past 300, effectively, by splattering the stumps of Mitchell Santner and Henry with consecutive balls in the 48th over.Chasing a significantly smaller target than they may have envisaged at one stage, India began in typically ominous fashion, with Rohit Sharma hitting four sixes in a 40-ball 46 that dominated an opening stand of 71 with Shubman Gill. During this partnership, India extracted a strange sort of revenge for the Old Trafford semi-final of 2019, where their fast bowlers had caused as much trouble with the new ball as New Zealand’s quicks but ended up with significantly fewer early wickets. This time Henry beat both openers’ bats repeatedly – including Gill three times in a row – and Trent Boult saw an edge from Rohit fall short of slip, but there were no wickets in the first powerplay.Thereafter it was all about Kohli, even though he typically did most of his work in the shadows – literally for a while when a spectral fog enveloped the ground, eventually stopping play for around 15 minutes. Kohli was the less-dominant partner in half-century stands for the third and fourth wickets, but where Shreyas Iyer fell to another short ball and KL Rahul played down the wrong line against Santner to be dismissed for the first time in the tournament, he endured, as he always does in run-chases.Ever so often, Kohli imposed himself on the game with an incandescent shot: an on-the-up square drive off Lockie Ferguson to get off the mark; a charging, flourishing extra-cover drive off Henry to get to 40; and in between an inside-out loft for six off Ravindra to release whatever pressure New Zealand had put on him by keeping him to 28 off his first 47 balls. From that point, Kohli scored 67 off 57 balls. A significant hiccup arrived when he got into a mix-up that sent back Suryakumar Yadav, but once Jadeja eased India’s fears over their lack of batting depth, the result became a formality.Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja operated at full intensity•Associated Press

New Zealand would have been disappointed at this because they had put themselves in a commanding position at one stage after India had sent them in. Ravindra and Mitchell had fought extremely hard to get them into that position, coming together after Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Shami had combined to reduce them to 19 for 2 in the ninth over.Along the way, the two of them demonstrated to all other sides a method to combat India’s attack. Mitchell exemplified this with his calculated risk-taking, particularly at the start of overs. He mixed up his pre-ball movements against the fast bowlers, sometimes shuffling across his stumps and out of his crease, at other times stepping back towards his off stump, and manipulating line and length in this manner. Most telling, though, was his calculated assault on Kuldeep Yadav, to whom he used his feet multiple times to launch him down the ground. In all, he scored 43 runs off Kuldeep – the most any batter has scored against the left-arm wristspinner in an ODI innings – off just 28 balls.Kuldeep conceded 48 in his first five overs, which would have worried India considerably, given that they didn’t have a sixth bowler. But the measure of Kuldeep’s skill and self-confidence came over his next five overs, in which he had Mitchell dropped at long-off, took two vital wickets – Tom Latham deceived by a flatter skidder and trapped plumb in front, Glenn Phillips caught off a miscue against the wrong’un – and conceded just 25.Kuldeep’s display was an encapsulation of India’s day. They were put under intense pressure by a formidable opponent, but they trusted their methods and came out unscathed. This India side can be rattled, but for any side to beat them over the next four weeks will likely take a special effort of sustained excellence.

Renshaw fifty gives Queensland a shot at victory against Tasmania

Matt Renshaw continued his good start to the summer with another half-century as Tasmania were left needing a big effort to avoid defeat in their Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland, after going to stumps on day three at 88 for 2 in pursuit of 432 for victory. After Queensland declared their second innings at 202 for 6 just after tea on Saturday, Tasmania lost both openers in the final session at Blundstone Arena. They faced a mammoth task on Sunday to either win the match or hold on for a final-day draw, after their batting crumbled in the first innings. On the back foot in the match since midway through Friday, Tasmania were bowled out for 150 early on day three when Beau Webster was caught at slip for 59.Queensland then opted against enforcing the follow-on, instead allowing Joe Burns to back up his first-innings century with 55 while Renshaw also struck 57. Ben McDermott (42 off 50) and Jimmy Peirson (28 from 25) both hit out before the former was taken superbly by Jordan Silk at cover from a full-blooded slog.Needing to bat through the best part of four sessions to save the match, Tasmania’s openers Caleb Jewell and Tim Ward offered some hope early. The pair got through 12 overs without loss before Jewell was superbly caught at slip by Burns on 22 when he edged a sharp ball from Jack Wildermuth. Ward was then beaten by a Mitchell Swepson ball that spun back at the left-hander out of the footmarks, edging it to wicketkeeper Peirson for 27.Silk and Charlie Wakim survived to the close, but Tasmania must survive three sessions or score another 344 runs to continue their unbeaten start to the season.Making matters more difficult for the Tigers is that Michael Neser has returned to Hobart for the rest of the match and can bowl for Queensland, after missing day two for personal reasons.Neser was expected to miss the remainder of the fixture when he flew home to Brisbane before day two of the match, after being not out on 51 at stumps on day one.”Things are more positive now and I can re-join the team for the remainder of the game,” Neser said in a statement on Saturday.”I am very grateful for the backing we have received and thank everyone for their support and understanding.”Neser has begun the Shield season with scores of 18, 140 and 90 before his 51 on Thursday, after also scoring two centuries in his previous two first-class innings for Glamorgan during the English summer. The Bulls have also been undefeated in their first two games, drawing with New South Wales and beating Victoria.

Athapaththu bludgeons Stars to help Thunder go top

The Sri Lankan hit 69 from 40 balls while Hannah Darlington took 2 for 13

Chamari Athapaththu bludgeoned Melbourne Stars’ attack to help lead Sydney Thunder to the top of the WBBL table with a nine-wicket win at Casey Fields. After Hannah Darlington was in everything with the ball for the Thunder to restrict the Stars to 123 for 5, Athapaththu blitzed 69 from 40 balls to chase down the target with 7.1 overs to spare.Wooden-spooners last season with one win in the entire season, Thunder now have a 4-1 record this summer and loom as genuine contenders. Darlington and Athapaththu continue to be big parts of that. After being overlooked in the overseas player draft and only scooped up by Thunder just before the tournament, Athapaththu has proved a point in the opening weeks. The Sri Lankan’s 69 on Saturday follows scores of 52 and 80 earlier in the tournament, to now be the competition’s second-leading run-scorer.Given a life when Rhys McKenna missed a chance on the long-on rope on 29, Athapaththu whacked 11 boundaries and two sixes in her knock. The most damage came when she helped take spinner Sasha Moloney for 28 off one over, with two sixes over the legside and three fours through the off. Tahlia Wilson also made 45 from 33 in the chase, forming part of a 119-run opening stand with Athapaththu.Earlier, Darlington backed up her 4 for 33 against the Renegades during the week with 2 for 13 from four overs on Saturday. The 21-year-old had an impact from the outset, going for just one in the opening over, before pulling off a direct-hit run-out moments later to remove Sophie Reid. With the ball Darlington was then able to build up enough pressure to have Meg Lanning dismissed for 17. Hit on the pad by Darlington and given not out, Australia’s captain took off for a quick single and was sent back before being run out by Claire Moore. In her next over, Darlington bowled Alice Capsey for 17 with one that stayed low, before trapping Maia Bouchier lbw next ball.Handed her Australian debut as a 19-year-old two years ago, Darlington is now showing that kind of form again for Thunder. While Thunder are flying, Stars have just two wins from their opening seven games and are in real trouble at the competition’s halfway mark.

Fabulous Fakhar pulls off stunning chase to keep Pakistan alive

Chasing New Zealand’s 402, the opener smashed an unbeaten ton to keep up with the DLS asking rate in rain-hit game

Danyal Rasool04-Nov-20231:47

Mumtaz on Fakhar’s knock: ‘Pakistan’s dreams and hopes alive due to one man’

Against all odds, Pakistan somehow remain alive in this World Cup. In a game where they turned in one of their most ordinary bowling displays in World Cup history, a century from Rachin Ravindra and 95 from the returning Kane Williamson saw New Zealand amass 401 – their highest World Cup total – to leave Pakistan on the ropes. But an astonishing counterattack from Fakhar Zaman saw him smash an unbeaten 126 in 81 balls to keep Pakistan up with the DLS asking rate with the threat of rain looming for much of the second innings. And when the rain did arrive, Pakistan were comfortably ahead of the rate they needed to be, pulling off a win that levels them on points with New Zealand and puts a semi-final berth within realistic grasp.Pakistan’s decision to field first after winning the toss raised eyebrows on a flat wicket, suggesting they had as much of an eye on improving their net run rate as they did putting points on the board. But as soon as New Zealand’s innings started, both prospects began to look like distant improbabilities. Devon Conway and Ravindra had started brightly, and Pakistan, who had somewhat curiously gone without either of their two legspinners or Mohammad Nawaz, found themselves turning to Iftikhar Ahmed’s spin in the sixth over.Pakistan fined for slow over rate

Pakistan were fined 10% of their match fees for maintaining a slow over rate in their win over New Zealand in Bengaluru. The Babar Azam-led side was found to be two overs short of their target after time allowances were taken into consideration.

On the field, Pakistan were found to be three overs short at the cut-off time and, as a result, they had to have one less fielder outside the inner ring for the last three overs of the innings that went for 35.

Match referee Richie Richardson imposed the sanction and Babar pleaded guilty to the offence, so there was no formal hearing.

New Zealand went after him too, and it was Haris Rauf who drew first blood with a short delivery that kissed Conway’s bat on the way through to Mohammad Rizwan. It brought Williamson out for just his second game this tournament, but he started like he’d never been away. The duo, on opposite ends of the spectrum in experience, were united in the comfort with which they negotiated a Pakistan attack that looked desperately toothless, with Babar Azam ringing the changes and struggling for respite from any corner. They had long brought up their half-centuries, and were speeding towards three figures, turbocharged by a Hasan Ali over that saw 18 come off it as both approached the 90s. But there was to be no slowdown from either; with New Zealand hovering around 240 for 1, there was little need to stall momentum in pursuit of a milestone. If anything Williamson’s risk-taking increased to reckless levels; he nearly ran himself out three times while within touch of his century. Ravindra, meanwhile, smeared Wasim through the onside to get to 99, before a single brought up his third World Cup hundred in the city of his parents’ birth.Williamson fell looking to bring his own hundred up with a straight six as he holed out to long-off, while Ravindra scooped one up to the midwicket boundary shortly after. But if Pakistan thought two new batters would stem the bleeding, Daryl Mitchell and Mark Chapman soon disabused them of that notion. The pair, along with Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner, put on cameos to see to it that New Zealand put on 140 runs in the 14.1 overs since Ravindra fell, breaching the 400 barrier against a battered, broken Pakistan fielding unit.Rachin Ravindra brought up his third century of the World Cup but it was in vain•Associated PressPakistan needed everything to go their way to have a snowball’s chance in hell, and that’s certainly not how it started. It was the irrepressible Williamson who drew first blood with one of the catches of the tournament, a sensational diving grab running backwards that put paid to Abdullah Shafique. But it was Fakhar who Pakistan needed in a situation like this, and his onslaught against Trent Boult made his intentions clear. Two fours and a six in his third over set the tone, with the 17 he conceded was Boult’s most expensive World Cup over. It was followed up by another 16 in his next as Babar also joined the party. However, it was the Fakhar show. Soon, Tim Southee was also taken on, as was Santner as Pakistan posted 75 by the time the first powerplay ended. Fakhar soon brought up his half-century with a late cut off Ish Sodhi off 39 balls, but he was only getting warmed up.A pair of sixes off Glenn Phillips meant Williamson, too, was struggling to get a handle on Fakhar, who was in that zone where he looked like every ball would disappear for six. Before you looked up, you saw he’d smacked Santner for his ninth six of the innings and was suddenly one ball away from three figures, bringing up a phenomenal 62-ball hundred soon after. When the rains arrived, Pakistan were ten runs ahead on the DLS, but it was to be a relatively brief interruption. When they got back on, though, they rubberstamped their dominance as the chase dwindled to 342 off 41 overs; they had effectively reduced it to a T20 game. Williamson fatefully turned to Sodhi, who conceded 32 in the two overs he sent down, including two gigantic sixes off Fakhar that indicated the break had not sapped any of his momentum. When steady rains began once more, Pakistan were much further ahead, 21 clear of where they needed to be. And on a wet evening, they would never get back on, Pakistan dashing away with the two points in a smash-and-grab for the ages. One whose lore may continue to be told and reinvented if a few results go a certain way in the coming week.

Exodus at Old Trafford: Five Manchester United players tell Red Devils they want to leave this summer as squad rebuild continues under Ruben Amorim

Five Manchester United players have put in transfer requests this summer as the Red Devils continue to rebuild their squad under Ruben Amorim. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia have all indicated their desire to pursue opportunities elsewhere, throwing a curveball into United's pre-season plans.

According to GOAL, Rashford, Garnacho and Sancho have grown frustrated with their diminished roles and are believed to have informed the club of their intent to move on, having found themselves increasingly marginalised.

Rashford is said to be eyeing a move to FC Barcelona. While no official bids have been submitted yet, the 27-year-old remains hopeful of a switch later in the transfer window. His main desire is to play in the Champions League, but he has no interest in relocating to London, nor does his camp support a deal involving a player swap.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Acknowledging the situation, United have adjusted their pre-season approach. The five players who have submitted transfer requests will not be expected to join up with the squad immediately. Instead, they’ve been given additional time to consider their futures and engage in talks with interested clubs.

The club has confirmed that its medical and rehabilitation facilities will remain available to the quintet and virtual support will also be provided. Should any of the players remain at United beyond the current window, they will be reintegrated at Carrington and given full access to training resources. The rest of the first-team squad is scheduled to report for duty starting Monday, as pre-season preparations begin in earnest under Amorim.

After spending last season on loan at Real Betis, Antony has become the subject of interest from multiple clubs. The La Liga outfit are keen to bring him back, though their financial constraints make meeting United’s valuation difficult. Serie A side Como have also shown interest, but sources suggest Antony prefers a return to the Benito Villamarín. Interestingly, former United boss Erik ten Hag's new club, Bayer Leverkusen, are reportedly keeping an eye on the situation.

Meanwhile, Sancho’s next move may be the first domino to fall. Negotiations are progressing between United and Juventus, with both sides working to settle on personal terms and a final fee. The Red Devils are believed to be holding out for around £25 million, a figure the Turin club is working to meet.

Garnacho’s status remains unclear. While Chelsea are reportedly monitoring the 21-year-old forward, no formal proposal has been submitted. Garnacho was used sparingly in the final stretch of last season and his omission from the matchday squad in the campaign’s closing fixture against Aston Villa only deepened speculation. His limited involvement in the Europa League final, coming off the bench rather than starting, was viewed by many as a turning point in his relationship with the club.

Virada do Juventude antes do intervalo.
