Big Targett upgrade: Newcastle already sold "incredible" Hall replacement

As Newcastle United get set to face Liverpool in the League Cup final, the Magpies will likely be missing a few key players.

Anthony Gordon is suspended for the game after being sent off against Brighton and Hove Albion, while Lewis Hall will miss the rest of the season having suffered a foot injury against Liverpool in February.

The long-term loss of the full-back, in particular, will provide a real headache for manager Eddie Howe…

Lewis Hall's major injury blow

Hall featured in all but one of Newcastle’s matches this season before the foot injury sidelined him until the 2025/26 campaign.

Lewis Hall in action vs Man City's Savinho

The 20-year-old was one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League for the Magpies this term. Indeed, he created five big chances, averaging 1.3 key passes per game while succeeding with 61% of his dribble attempts, proving to be a key component of the side going forward.

The youngster also won 54% of his total duels per game and made 2.1 tackles each match for the club in the top flight, and he will be a huge miss for Howe.

Matt Targett is the obvious replacement for him at left-back, but did Howe sell an upgrade on the 29-year-old during the January transfer window? A player who didn’t really get a chance at the club during the first half of the season.

Newcastle already sold the perfect Hall replacement

Targett has played just four times for the Toon this term, with only one of those coming in the Premier League.

Due to Hall’s injury, however, he could find himself slotted into the starting XI between now and the end of the campaign.

Matt Targett

Injury issues plagued him last season too, playing just seven games for the St James’ Park side in all competitions.

Howe allowed Lloyd Kelly to move to Juventus in January on an initial loan deal, before the Serie A club have an obligation to pay £20m to make the deal permanent this summer.

Kelly made just 14 appearances for the Toon before leaving, but he has already played six times for Juventus.

Hailed by former manager Gary O’Neil as “incredible”, the English defender can either play centre-back or left-back and would have solved the crisis Howe is now undergoing by slotting into the space vacated by Hall.

Across his three Serie A games for the Italian giants, Kelly has averaged a pass success rate of 88%, while keeping two clean sheets, recovering four balls per game and winning 4.7 total duels per game.

An impressive array of statistics given he was thrown into the deep end in Serie A. Howe must regret moving him on during the winter window, although he wasn’t expecting Hall to miss the remainder of the season due to injury.

Targett must now come into the side and perform well, especially if Newcastle want to stand any chance of winning the League Cup, claiming their first major domestic honour in nearly 70 years in the process.

Rangers can sign £11m+ star for half price with 49ers aware of transfer

Rangers can sign a star player for just over £5m in the coming months, and prospective new owners the 49ers are aware of a deal.

49ers plans for Rangers after agreeing a deal in principle

It promises to be a busy few months both on and off the pitch at Ibrox, with interim manager Barry Ferguson looking to take Rangers to the Europa League final in Bilbao.

Ferguson, who has already got the better of Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce, will soon turn his attention to a quarter-final with Athletic Club.

The Scot appears to be impressing in caretaker charge and also guided Rangers to a 3-2 win at Celtic prior to the international break. Ferguson is keen on taking the Rangers job on a permanent basis, according to his older brother Derek, whereas Lee McCulloch has also backed the ex-midfielder to get the role on a permanent basis.

Meanwhile, the 49ers Enterprises have agreed a deal in principle to take over in Glasgow and are hopeful all the relative paperwork will be completed ahead of the 2025/26 season.

A concern for the Gers…

Reports have suggested that the 49ers may back with a £20-25million budget this summer, once a takeover is completed.

One of their first player moves could be to make Vaclav Cerny’s loan into a permanent transfer. Recent reports claimed that a full-time deal could cost around £8m, however, a new update from reliable journalist Keith Jackson has stated it could be less than that.

Rangers can sign Cerny for half price £5.5m with deadline set

As per a story for The Daily Record, Jackson revealed that Rangers have the chance to sign Cerny for just £5.5m from Bundesliga outfit Wolfsburg. The option was included in the loan deal that brought Cerny to Ibrox, and Rangers have a deadline until before the end of May.

Vaclav Cerny

The 49ers are aware of the urgency around Cerny’s contractual situation, with the winger attracting interest around Europe as a result of his impressive performances in Scotland.

Should Rangers not sign the 27-year-old for £5.5m, it is expected that Cerny’s ‘price tag could more than double’ to £11m+. It looks as if a £5.5m deal is a no-brainer for everyone involved at Ibrox, and it appears as if Cerny himself is also keen on a transfer.

Ellie Threlkeld, Tara Norris fifties secure Thunder's second tie of season

Thunder secured their second tie in this season’s Rachel Heyhoe Flint Trophy in the most dramatic fashion when Ellie Threlkeld’s 60 and Tara Norris’s unbeaten 51 brought their side within one run of chasing down to 262 to defeat Southern Vipers. This outcome seemed unlikely in the extreme when Georgia Adams’ bowlers were restricting the home side’s reply and the match featured a fine debut by Australian fast bowler Maitlan Brown, who took 3 for 52 from ten overs. But in all other respects, a superb match will be remembered for Threlkeld’s extraordinary assault and for Norris’s fearless hitting as Thunder scored 66 runs off their last five overs. The home side’s No. 9 hit a six off Adams’ penultimate ball of the match before being restricted to two runs off the final delivery.Related

In the opening hour of the day, the visitors’ openers, Ella McCaughan and Abi Norgrove gave their side’s innings a fluent and productive start, 42 runs being scored in the first ten overs. The true wicket and glassy outfield ensured that batters received full value for their attacking shots throughout the day and Norgrove, in particular, warmed to her task, hitting successive boundaries off both Mahika Gaur and Norris. It was no surprise that Thunder skipper Threlkeld called on her battery of spinners early in the innings but they made no breakthroughs until the 21st over when Emma Lamb had Norgrove stumped by Threlkeld for 48, thus ending her 85-run stand with McCaughan. In the next over Adams was bowled through the gate by an off-spinner from Fi Morris but the loss of wickets did little to curb a run rate than cantered along at a minimum of four an over throughout the innings.Emily Windsor continued the assault but was caught behind by Threlkeld off Laura Jackson for 49 when attempting the cut that would have brought her a half-century. Linsey Smith maintained the charge and was unbeaten on 42 when the innings closed.None of Thunder’s bowlers escaped punishment but Morris returned the respectable figures of 1 for 34 from eight overs and Lamb took 2 for 35 from seven and Jackson 2 for 43 off nine. In addition to her catch and stumping, Threlkeld conceded no byes and kept magnificently throughout the 50 overs.Despite the early loss of Lamb, who was athletically caught and bowled by Brown, Thunder’s attempt to score at 5.26 runs an over to win the game began positively. Both Seren Smale and Naomi Dattani seized every opportunity to attack and it was almost a shock in the twelfth over when Smale was lured forward by a flighted off-spinner from Ava Lee and stumped by Rhianna Southby for 22.That wicket still left Thunder reasonably placed on 50 for 2 but the next hour’s cricket went a long way towards deciding the outcome of the contest. First Morris was hurried into a pull by Brown and skied a catch to Mary Taylor at mid on.Then, having made a composed 43, Dattani drove a return catch back to Adams and two overs later Smith claimed the vital wicket of Deandra Dottin, who played inside an arm ball and was leg before wicket for 21.Threlkeld’s late assault on the Vipers’ attack put the outcome in doubt for a time but her dismissal, leg before to Adams in the 48th over, seemed to have settled matters before Norris brought her side far closer to their target than anyone had believed possible.

Prajapati ton in vain for Oman as hosts take another step towards the ODI World Cup

A valiant Oman fell achingly short of the finish line, as Sean Williams’ 142 trumped Kashyap Prajapati’s 103 – the first ton by an Oman batter against an ICC full member – to help Zimbabwe secure a narrow yet crucial 14-run win to kick off the Super Six stage.Williams’ masterful innings was aided by cameos from Sikandar Raza and Luke Jongwe, along with several other useful contributions right throughout the order. Then with the ball, Tendai Chatara and Blessing Muzarabani picked up three apiece, and Richard Ngarava grabbed a pair to stall Oman’s charge.Oman penalised for slow over-rate

Oman were fined 40% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate – they were two overs short of the target after time allowances were taken into consideration – against Zimbabwe.
Their senior bowler Kaleemullah, meanwhile, had one demerit point added to his record for a code-of-conduct breach relating to using inappropriate language, actions or gestures.

The result means Zimbabwe have one foot in the World Cup proper, with another win from their next two games securing qualification – though they can qualify even with two losses, provided other results go their way.For Oman, while their chances of qualifying are now virtually non-existent by virtue of their inferior net run rate, their performance was yet another reminder of the closing gap between Associate nations and their full-member counterparts.Oman will rue missed opportunities with each of Williams, Raza and Craig Ervine dropped, while there were also several easy runs given away and run-out chances missed. By contrast, Zimbabwe grabbed every inch, most notably when Raza completed an awe-inspiring over-the-shoulder grab to dismiss the set Prajapati. In the twilight of his career, Williams is currently at the peak of his powers, putting up scarcely believable numbers. In Bulawayo, a ground where he has played countless hours of club cricket, he struck a 103-ball 142 – nearly becoming the second man after Sanath Jayasuriya to score back-to-back scores of 150 or more in ODIs. His average is vying with his strike rate, and he is now on 532 runs for the tournament with three more games potentially left to play.Kashyap Prajapati’s 103 was the first for Oman against a Full Member team•ICC/Getty Images

On Thursday, he arrived in the middle overs and shifted gears effortlessly. The surface in Bulawayo was not completely to the batters’ liking but in Williams, Zimbabwe had a man for all occasions. He was part of key partnerships throughout – 64 with Wessly Madhevere, 103 with Raza, 41 with Ryan Burl for 41 and finally 21 with Jongwe. In each of those, Williams was the more dominant partner, finding boundaries all around the ground when needed. Only the excellent Kaleemullah managed to keep him to a strike rate of less than 100 (90).When Williams fell with still five overs left, Oman might have had hopes of getting in a few miserly overs but Zimbabwe’s tail wagged significantly – through a combination of excellent running, streaky boundaries and fielding lapses – to take 55 off the final five.At that stage, with a target of 333 set, on a track that wasn’t exactly straightforward to bat on, Oman went about their chase with the nous of more seasoned campaigners – never letting the required rate get out of hand, finding boundaries when necessary and limiting dot balls. But where Oman had provided the Zimbabwean batters with breathing room, Zimbabwe kept the pressure on, and when the chances came they didn’t flinch. Though no one was surprised; they’ve only been doing it all tournament.

Tottenham told "huge" fee to sign target after claims Levy had bid £30m

Tottenham Hotspur have work to do in the summer window, and Ange Postecoglou has now found out how much it would take to bring one of his key targets to N17 amid recent reports.

Tottenham set their sights on squad rebuild this summer

Even the most optimistic Tottenham fan would admit this season hasn’t gone to plan, even if they can still snatch a backdoor route to Champions League football by claiming the Europa League title in May.

Nevertheless, with Ange Postecoglou yet to convince the masses, a strong window is likely the perfect tonic for Spurs to return to being a recognisable force in 2025/26.

In what would be a blockbuster statement of intent, Tottenham are ready to go all in for Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres this summer following his 40-goal return for the reigning Portuguese champions.

Looking to fill the void left by Harry Kane, if the Sweden international shows willingness to seek a new challenge, that could speed up the process of a deal being concluded.

Contrariwise, Tottenham may need to source defensive reinforcements if Cristian Romero joins Real Madrid. The Argentina international is reportedly keen on a move to the Santiago Bernabeu and has just over two years left on his contract in north London.

Defensive frailties have haunted Postecoglou this season, and injuries have forced the likes of Archie Gray and Djed Spence into unfamiliar roles, so losing someone with a World Cup-winning pedigree is undoubtedly something they won’t want be on the agenda in the upcoming window.

Either way, fresh blood is needed to supplement a squad hampered by inconsistency under the Australian. Spurs have now found out the cost of a key defensive target, per recent developments.

Tottenham find out Rayan Ait-Nouri's price tag

Previously, reports emerged stating Tottenham had bid £29m for Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Rayan Ait-Nouri, of whom they are said to be the most likely candidates to sign despite alternative interest from Liverpool and West Ham United.

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke now claims it may take Spurs a ‘huge’ £40m to bring in Ait-Nouri this summer. The Molineux club face a fight to retain his services following a poor campaign in the West Midlands amid further admiration from Manchester United and Arsenal.

Ange already has the perfect Son replacement in Spurs' "fearless" teen star

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 21, 2025

Concerns over Destiny Udogie’s consistency have led to Djed Spence appearing on the left flank frequently, though the Englishman’s lopsided nature, being naturally right-sided, has led Postecoglou and Daniel Levy to consider their options on the market.

Becoming a shining light in a tough campaign for Wolves, Algeria international Ait-Nouri has registered four goals and five assists in 32 appearances across all competitions.

Furthermore, the 23-year-old has ranked as the Old Gold’s second-most consistent Premier League performer behind Matheus Cunha, per WhoScored, chalking up an average match rating of 6.84/10.

Changes are coming at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Ait-Nouri may be the ideal candidate to perfect the balance between defence and attack on the left-hand side.

With just one day left before the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup kicks off, LAFC star forward Denis Bouanga is still riding the emotional high of the goal that booked his team’s place in the tournament. The Gabon international delivered the decisive strike in extra time during the playoff match that eliminated Club América and secured LAFC's spot in the competition, replacing León.

Speaking with TNT Sports, Bouanga described the goal as the most important of his career – not just for what it meant in terms of qualification, but for the unforgettable emotions it sparked.

“It was a magical moment and the most emotional goal of my life. The moment the ball hit the net, I got goosebumps. Seeing the stadium erupt, my teammates celebrate, and my family cheering – there’s nothing like it," he said. "Coming from behind to tie it up and then scoring the winner, that’s something I’ll never forget."

Bouanga and LAFC are gearing up for a demanding group stage, where they’ll take on Chelsea, the current UEFA Conference League champions, as well as Espérance de Tunis and Flamengo, all battling for a place in the Round of 16.

Steve Cherundolo’s team arrives at the tournament after a dramatic win over Club América – a match in which LAFC came in as underdogs. Regardless of what happens in the competition, the club now finds itself with an opportunity that would have seemed out of reach just months ago.

“Personally, I’m extremely proud to be part of this great tournament that brings together the 32 best clubs in the world. It felt like a final – we won it, and that’s something truly special for Los Angeles FC,” said the Gabonese striker.

No Estadual, o Corinthians atingiu exatamente a meta e arrecadou R$ 750 mil.

'We're allowed to lose' – Alyssa Healy not worried by close defeat at The Oval

Australia captain thrilled by strong crowds in England and looks forward to next T20I at Lord’s

Valkerie Baynes06-Jul-2023Australia may be looking to arrest a run of two flawed performances, but for their captain Alyssa Healy, it’s far from panic stations after conceding defeat to England in their second T20I before a huge crowd at The Oval. While Australia managed to scrape a four-wicket victory with one ball to spare in the opening match at Edgbaston on Saturday, a sub-par fielding performance by their lofty standards, and a batting collapse from 59 without loss to 96 for 5 on Wednesday, allowed England to keep the Women’s Ashes series alive.”It felt like we were slightly off in every facet of the game again – and we mentioned that after the last game – but we were probably a little bit worse again tonight,” Healy said. “I guess it’s some sort of comfort to know that we didn’t play our best and still only lost by four runs. We’ll just pinpoint it over the next day and a half, and hopefully put it all together for Lord’s [for the third T20I].Related

Danni Wyatt and spinners keep England alive in the Women's Ashes

“We’re allowed to lose games of cricket. England also came out at the start of the series and said this is their strongest format. So you’ve got to potentially think they’re going to challenge you at some point, and they did tonight. It’s the game of cricket. You win some, you lose some. Fortunately for us, we haven’t lost a lot. But in saying that, hopefully we learn a lot more out of the loss tonight.”Australia still lead the Ashes by six points to two, with one more T20I and three ODIs – each worth two points – remaining. And they nearly recovered to chase down a target of 187 at The Oval, thanks to Ellyse Perry’s unbeaten 51 off only 27 balls, after Danni Wyatt’s 76 had led England to 186.It was the second-highest total conceded by Australia in the format, behind the 187 in December against India, who won that match in a Super Over, Australia’s only other T20I defeat in their past 25 completed matches as England prevailed by three runs on this occasion.”We spoke about what [are] some areas that we needed to improve on for the last game, and I think we improved in some of them,” Healy said. “But we’re still sort of letting ourselves down in some little one percenters in the game – whether it be the fielding or execution with bat and ball – so there’s not much you can do about it.”You can train all you like but ultimately if you turn up with a ruthless attitude and a want to win, you can get yourselves over the line. I’m not saying that’s what the issue, is but we just [have to] reset, refocus.”

“We [have] set our sights on what is going to be an amazing occasion at Lord’s on Saturday night… We’re playing at some of the biggest grounds in the country, and people are wanting to turn up and watch because they know what they’re going to get”Alyssa Healy is thrilled with the response of the public in England

Just as they have set the standard as reigning T20I and ODI world champions, Healy believed this series was doing the same for the Women’s Ashes, with bumper crowds attending ahead of the next fixture at Lord’s on Saturday, only the second time England Women have played there since their World Cup victory in 2017.Some 20,328 fans had packed into The Oval to roar England to victory, their first against Australia in any format since February 2020, when they had won in a Super Over in Canberra during the tri-series also involving India. The crowd figure surpassed the 19,527 at Edgbaston for the first T20I after 23,207 attended the Test over the course of five days at Trent Bridge.”It was a great game of cricket at one of the most iconic grounds in England, which was a great showcase for women’s sport. And you see what you can do when you play on a good ground with a good wicket – people want to turn up and watch,” Healy said of The Oval. “We [have] set our sights on what is going to be an amazing occasion at Lord’s on Saturday night. This Ashes series has been such an amazing one so far.”We’re playing at some of the biggest grounds in the country, and people are wanting to turn up and watch because they know what they’re going to get. So to tick Lord’s off, it’ll be a really a special occasion for the girls who get that opportunity. But I’m sure that the girls that aren’t playing, there’s going to be plenty more opportunities in future Ashes series because they’ve set the benchmark now, which is really exciting.””Some of us are emotional because it’s been a long time coming,” Sarah Glenn on England’s win in the second T20I•Getty ImagesFor England’s part, Sarah Glenn, who took two wickets and shared an important 31-run stand for the eighth wicket with fellow spinner Sophie Ecclestone, said the victory in the second T20I was an emotional one, having pushed Australia during stages of the Test and in the previous T20I.”Oh God, so many emotions. Really happy,” Glenn said. “Some of us are a bit emotional just because it’s been a long time coming. We’ve had lots of really close calls, and we’ve always known we can beat them. It’s just actually [about] getting over the line against a top line-up, who have had momentum for a long time.”We really improved from the last game, but I think there’s still a lot to come from us as well. We will celebrate the win definitely, but with a top-class side, they’ll just come back just as hard or even harder. So I think we’re just going to prepare for the next couple of days, how we can try and get over the line again, and just keep that momentum with us.”
