Tom Haines, Ben Brown score maiden List A centuries as Sussex beat Middlesex in thriller

Captain Tom Haines and Ben Brown scored maiden List A centuries as Sussex ended their Royal London Cup campaign by beating Middlesex by three runs in a thriller at Hove.Haines made 123 and Brown 105 as they shared a stand of 219 for the second wicket, the county’s fourth-highest partnership in one-day matches, out of a total of 333 for 4 after Haines had won the toss. With Travis Head and David Wiese adding 54 off 21 balls at the end, Sussex finished with their second-highest List A total in matches at Hove after plundering 130 off the last ten overs.Middlesex, who needed to win to have any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages, were in a decent position on 145 for 1 in the 28th over, but Sussex’s four slow bowlers maintained pressure and wickets began to fall, including opener Max Holden who top scored with 94.But left-hander Jack Davies made a rapid 51 off 37 balls and even when he departed in the 46th over Martin Andersson kept his side in the hunt. Middlesex took 23 off the penultimate over from Danny Ibrahim and when Andersson hit Wiese for six off the first ball of the final over they needed eight off five balls and were favourites. But Wiese held his nerve. He had Josh De Caires caught in the deep and conceded singles off the last three deliveries to see his side home. They swapped places with Middlesex to finish seventh in Group 2.Haines and Brown had earlier come together in the eighth over after Middlesex captain James Harris held a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Ali Orr for 13.It was the last success Middlesex enjoyed for 36 overs as Haines and Brown built their partnership in ideal batting conditions. The only chance either of them offered came when Haines was dropped on 117. He struck 11 fours and four sixes with only De Caires going for less than five runs an over.Haines made 123 from 131 deliveries before he was caught at deep mid-wicket off a mis-timed pull and Brown also departed to a standing ovation when he holed out to deep extra cover, his runs coming off 109 balls with eight fours. Head and Wiese then thrashed 54 from just 21 balls, 46 of which came in boundaries, Wiese making 33 off 11 and Head 46 from 20.Middlesex made a solid start with Holden sharing 65 with Steve Eskinazi (28) and 80 with Varun Chopra (45), but the required rate had climbed to nine an over by the time skipper Peter Handscomb was lbw sweeping James Coles for 16.Holden moved to 94 from 95 balls with 12 fours when Head took a sharp return catch to end a fine innings. The Australian off-spinner finished with 2 for 35 while Wiese and Will Beer also picked up two wickets.

City are said to be keen on signing Marmoush in the January transfer window after a difficult couple of months during which they have slipped to sixth in the Premier League table. The Egyptian is still an Eintracht Frankfurt player for now and was on target after been named in their side to take on St Pauli on Saturday – but the club's head coach Markus Krosche admitted before the game that talks have taken place with an interested club.

Marmoush is reportedly keen on the move this month but Eintracht will take some convincing to sell as they resume their domestic season sitting third in the Bundesliga. Pep Guardiola is desperate for reinforcements and will view the Egyptian as a player who can play anywhere across the frontline – but City may need to part with €80 million (£67m/$82m) to sign him now.

Asked before the game about the stories, Krosche said: "One club has made contact. A club has expressed its interest. We hope that he stays."

City sold Julian Alvarez to Atletico Madrid in the summer and may see the versatile Marmoush as his eventual replacement. The Egyptian is joint-top of the Bundesliga goal contributions chart, alongside Harry Kane, and his current team will fancy their chances of continuing to compete at the top of the league should they keep him this month.

Back in the summer of 2022 – with the Red Devils already having doubts over how long Cristiano Ronaldo would remain at the club, with his contract eventually terminated in November of that year – the decision was taken to spend big on another winger.

According to , United expressed interest in Brazil international Raphinha, who boasted useful Premier League experience from a spell at Leeds. Ten Hag was, however, to convince the Old Trafford board that a raid should be launched on his former employers at Ajax for Antony.

Cody Gakpo, who was then on the books at PSV, also registered on the recruitment radar in Manchester. No deal was done there either, with Antony prised away from Amsterdam in the same window as Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez.

Antony has now been allowed to join Real Betis on loan, having registered just 12 goals and five assists for United through 96 appearances. Agreement reached: 20-year-old Rangers gem seals out of window Ibrox exit

A young Rangers player has sealed a move away from Ibrox after an agreement was reached outside of the transfer window.

Latest Rangers news

The Gers returned to a newly-renovated Ibrox for the first time in many months on Saturday, taking on Dundee in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup.

On an emotional occasion, Philippe Clement’s side delivered a strong performance and result, cruising to a 3-0 victory to book their place in the semi-finals. Cyriel Dessers scored twice for the hosts, while a James Tavernier penalty was sandwiched in between, on a positive day all round for Rangers.

For Clement, this was a particularly important result, considering the Belgian is reportedly under pressure to keep his job, following a hit-and-miss start to the season in the Scottish Premiership. His side have already slipped five points behind Celtic, and he will know that a dominant run of form is needed to take some of the heat off him.

A trip to Malmo in the Europa League is up next on Thursday evening, followed by Hibernian’s visit in the league, representing another important week for the manager. Now, a fresh piece of Gers transfer news has emerged, despite the window not being open currently.

Rangers youngster seals move away

Rangers’ official website has confirmed that young defender Connor Allan has joined Kelty Hearts on loan for the rest of the 2024/25 season, with an agreement reached to take him there.

The 20-year-old has sealed a switch to the Scottish League One side despite the summer transfer window closing at the end of last month, as he looks to enjoy more regular playing time between now and May.

It makes total sense to give Allan this opportunity, considering he isn’t seen as a remotely integral part of Clement’s plans at Rangers currently.

In fact, he has exclusively been a Gers B team player, making 43 appearances for them – he has four goals and two assists to his name for good measure – but not yet making the grade for a single game in the senior setup.

At 20, it is so important that Allan gains vital minutes at a good level, in order not to go stale in the B team, so this feels like a move that may benefit everyone concerned. It will allow the Scot to return to Ibrox a more experienced player next summer, at which point the club may decide whether to retain his services moving forward or look to receive a fee, letting him leave permanently in the process.

He's now worth £4m: Rangers must regret letting Ibrox star leave for £0

The Ibrox side could do with having a former player in their squad right now…

ByRoss Kilvington Sep 19, 2024

It is encouraging that the Rangers youngster has already made one appearance for Kelty Hearts, coming in the Scottish League One on Saturday, in a 1-0 defeat away to Alloa Athletic. He played all 90 minutes, suggesting he will be considered a regular man from the off, making his development one to watch.

Chelsea may be without "dangerous" player till November after injury update

Manager Enzo Maresca could be without a “dangerous” Chelsea player till November, as an injury update comes out of Cobham this week.

Chelsea preparing for Liverpool after international break

A fantastic start to the new Premier League campaign for Maresca has seen the Blues clinch impressive victories over Wolves, Bournemouth, West Ham and Brighton – whilst also cruising through to the next round of the EFL Cup at the expense of Barrow and beating Gent 4-2 in the Conference League.

Their early season record could’ve been even better, as Chelsea were arguably unlucky not to come away from their home game against Crystal Palace with all three points, with goalkeeper Dean Henderson putting in a heroic display at Stamford Bridge to earn Palace a 1-1 draw.

One of the most thrilling draws you’re ever likely to see – Chelsea’s 1-1 with Nottingham Forest in west London just before the international break – saw both keepers pull off sublime saves to keep the score level and ensure the latter side’s impressive unbeaten run on the road continues.

Maresca’s only defeat as Chelsea boss in the league came against English champions Man City on the opening weekend, and now an equally tough test awaits the Blues on Sunday as they prepare to take on title contenders Liverpool at Anfield.

Star players Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, Noni Madueke, Jadon Sancho and Moises Caicedo, who have all been excellent so far, are set to play a key role on Merseyside – but the same cannot be said for others. Ben Chilwell is pushing to leave Chelsea, while uncertainty surrounds the futures of Mykhailo Mudryk and Carney Chukwuemeka, among others.

Omari Kellyman is also sidelined with a hamstring injury, expected to keep him out for the foreseeable, while defender Reece James has just resumed full training for the first time in months.

Chelsea could be without Reece James until November

The England international has been absent since pre-season, and while a return to Cobham training signals that a return to training may not be too far away, Maresca and his staff will be mindful of his torrid injury history as they look to ease him back in gently.

That is according to Standard Sport, who estimate that James could remain out at Chelsea until November, despite his recovery.

They believe Chelsea’s face-off against Noah in the Conference League on November 7 may be the game he makes his long-anticipated return, and Maresca will be hoping that the worst of his fitness record has now come and gone.

“He’s got everything. If I made the complete right-back, it would be him,” said Kyle Walker in a BBC interview about James.

“He can defend, attack, technically (brilliant) and can use both feet. He’s dangerous in the dead-ball situations, he’s quick.

“If I was to built an ideal right-back, I’d use my strength, Hakimi’s pace, Cancelo’s technical ability, Trent’s passing, Carvajal’s mentality and Reece James’ football brain. If I was to round all of them up in one, I’d be Reece. He’s got a little bit of everything!”

Arsenal wasted £15.6m on Wenger signing who earned even more than Saka

Mikel Arteta’s transformation of Arsenal has been nothing short of phenomenal, taking the club from strugglers to Premier League title challengers in just a couple of years.

When the Spaniard took over, the Gunners were a mess on the pitch, finishing eighth after taking over midway through the 2019/20 season, which was impacted by the COVID pandemic.

However, just a handful of years later, the 42-year-old developed the squad into title challengers, becoming Manchester City’s closest challengers in the 2022/23 season – but they narrowly missed out on a first league title since the invincible campaign.

The club’s investment in players all over the pitch such as Gabriel, Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Jesus, has allowed for the rapid transformation – with credit needing to be handed out to the recruitment team.

Despite their activity in the market, the club also have their academy to thank, with the emergence of one star undoubtedly bolstering their title ambitions in recent times.

Bukayo Saka’s time in Arsenal’s first-team

After making his first-team debut back in the 2018/19 campaign, winger Bukayo Saka rapidly integrated himself into a star at the Emirates – becoming the latest gem out of the club’s Hale End academy.

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka

It was the following campaign that the Englishman made a name for himself, registering 16 goal contributions during his first full season as a first-team member.

Since then, the 23-year-old hasn’t looked back, becoming a key player under Arteta and producing some phenomenal numbers over the last couple of years.

The 2022/23 season saw Saka burst into life, registering 26 goals or assists as the Gunners narrowly missed out on the Premier League title.

It’s also allowed him to become a regular player in the England national side, featuring at Euro 2020 along with the World Cup in 2022 and the recent European Championships, as the nation fell to a defeat against Spain in the final.

However, despite all his recent successes, he still earns less than one player who failed to make his mark during his stint in North London.

The man who earned more than Saka at Arsenal

Alexis Sanchez was a huge part of Arsenal’s success during the latter years of Arsène Wenger’s tenure at the Emirates – but his move to Manchester United sparked a swap deal between the two clubs.

The Chilean attacker moved to Old Trafford in January 2018, a deal that saw attacking midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan move to North London as part of the transfer.

The Armenian star arrived with high hopes given his experience at the top level, but whilst he demonstrated moments of magic, his spell with the Gunners overall was a disappointing one.

He made only made 59 appearances during his 18-month stint at the club, scoring nine times after arriving under legendary boss Wenger.

Mkhitaryan, who was previously dubbed as “disappointing” by journalist Stuart Mathieson, pocketed a huge sum whilst featuring for the Gunners, earning £200k-per-week, as per Capology.

His subsequent earnings are higher than current Arsenal star Saka who pockets a reported £195k-per-week at the Emirates after his recent emergence over the last few years.

When combining Mkhitaryan’s total earnings during his time in North London, he cost the club a whopping £15.6m in wages – a huge sum given his lack of consistent impact at the Emirates.

Whilst his experience could’ve certainly helped Arsenal during a tricky period on the pitch, the move never worked out with the midfielder costing the club a small fortune.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Wright was reacting to the controversial red card awarded to Myles Lewis-Skelly by Michael Oliver in the first half of Arsenal's clash with Wolves at Molineux on Saturday, when a foul on Matt Doherty was deemed "serious foul play" and not reviewed by VAR. The Gunners went on to win the game 1-0 but the decision has still prompted outrage from players, staff and fans.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal feel they have been hard done by in terms of refereeing decisions this season. Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard were both sent off after receiving second yellow cards for kicking the ball away earlier on in the campaign, costing their side potential victories against Brighton and Manchester City. They currently sit six points behind league leaders Liverpool, with their rivals also having a game in hand.

  • WHAT WRIGHT SAID

Commenting on the decision, Wright said on Instagram: "It's a joke. Anyone that has ever played the game knows it's never a red. Yellow card, nobody says a word. Time and time again, this level of refereeing in the Premier League – the inconsistency, the excuses, the apologies – they just want to be the centre of attention, for me." Wright added in the caption: "They are going to try and find all sorts of angles and slow mo's to try and justify the incompetency and inconsistency of PGMOL."

The former Arsenal striker also suggested the Premier League should bring in foreign referees to improve the falling officiating standards. "We can't criticise too hard because where are the refs going to come from? Where are we going to get them? But, I'm sorry. This is the highest level of football and we do not have the highest level of referees," he said. "When will the Premier League bring the best refs into the so-called best league in the world. Because, at the moment, with this level of referees, we're nowhere near it. Nowhere near it."

Second ODI washed out after Ireland post 282

Harry Tector’s half-century and cameos from George Dockrell and Lorcan Tucker propelled the hosts but rain had other plans

No result Heavy rain invaded the ground after the Ireland innings, thus washing the game out with no further cricket possible during the second ODI in Belfast. It started raining around 2.30pm during the innings break, and relented after 40 minutes. An inspection was scheduled for 4.15pm, but the umpires remained dissatisfied with the state of the ground. Eventually, the game was called off at 5.15pm.Earlier, Harry Tector fired at the death to propel Ireland to 282, as his rapid innings of 55 from 42 balls ensured Ireland put up a healthy score after being inserted by Zimbabwe under cloudy skies. Ireland scored 110 in the last ten overs – and 57 in the last five – as Tector combined first with George Dockrell and then Lorcan Tucker to help the hosts accelerate after a quiet start.Tector reached his fourth ODI fifty off just 39 balls despite starting sedately with only 11 off his first 16 deliveries. That is when he hit his first six, gently lofting Wellington Masakadza over long-off in the 41st over. Two overs later, he cracked Luke Jongwe to the point fence for four – the ball was hit so hard that it trickled into the rope despite clipping the leaping Sikandar Raza’s fingers at point – before finding consecutive boundaries off Blessing Muzarabani. But with Ireland still on only 225 with five overs left, he got into Jongwe again, slamming two fours and a six before mistiming a pull off Richard Ngarava to be caught-and-bowled. Earlier, Dockrell hit 28 from 19 balls – including two fours and a six – before Tucker, who fell in the final over, cracked 32 from just 20 deliveries. However, the innings was set up by Ireland’s openers William Porterfield and Paul Stirling, who survived testing conditions and some accurate bowling from Muzarabani and Ngarava first up. While an opening stand of 88 in more than 22 overs isn’t typically rapid – not least by some standards set by batters in the modern days – they had to weather some early storm in the form of sharp movement and bounce gained by Zimbabwe’s new-ball pair of Muzarabani and Ngarava.Muzarabani set the tone right with the first ball of the innings, when he got one to angle across the left-hander Porterfield and past his outside edge. The right-arm quick in particular generated appreciable swing, beating the bat with movement and bounce off the surface, with his figures reading 5-1-15-0 at one point.Eventually the stand of 82 was broken by Sean Williams, with Raza taking an outstanding diving catch at midwicket, snatching the ball with his stretched out left hand to send Stirling back. New man Andy Balbirnie entertained with 40 from 43 deliveries, before Ngarava got both him and Porterfield, who took exactly a hundred deliveries for his 67.The abandonment leaves Zimbabwe 1-0 up in the series, with both sides being allotted five World Cup Super League points. The third and final ODI takes place at the same ground on Monday.
