A lot of the noise coming out of north London in the past fortnight has been centred around Arsenal's ongoing talks over a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, which has dragged on for quite a long time now.

Once, or if, Mikel Arteta sees his compatriot sign for Arsenal before deadline day – the Spaniard may be hoping he can bring in one more forward option. Indeed, a striker has long been viewed by some critics as the final missing piece of the jigsaw at London Colney.

Arsenal were rumoured to hold a serious interest in Ivan Toney as far back as 12 months ago, and have been regularly tipped to move for a striker ever since.

After Toney, Edu was tipped to bid for Victor Osimhen of Napoli, while Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres has also been on Arsenal's radar. Even Dominic Solanke was linked with an Arsenal move, before he opted to join their north London rivals Tottenham for a total fee of around £65 million.

Arsenal hold talks with Evanilson agents in search for forward

According to HITC, it is believed FC Porto striker and two-cap Brazil international Evanilson is now turning heads in north London.

Indeed, Arsenal have apparently held talks with Evanilson through his agents, following the 24-year-old's exceptional haul of 25 goals in all competitions for Porto last season.

However, the Gunners are not the only Premier League side registering their interest in Evanilson, as Manchester United, Liverpool, Newcastle United and West Ham have all done the same.

There are two other English sides currently above Arsenal in the race for him as well. Both Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth are the only sides to have formalised their interest in the South American marksman, who is rumoured to command a price tag of around £60 million.

Jofra Archer likely to miss first half of IPL 2021

Fast bowler set to return to England post T20I series against India as Rajasthan Royals await formal update from ECB on his availability

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Mar-2021Jofra Archer is set to miss at least the first half of IPL 2021 for the Rajasthan Royals, as the ECB has decided to send him back home from India to tend to an elbow condition, which had kept him out of the second and fourth Tests against India.ESPNcricinfo understands that Archer will return to England after the T20I series, and will not feature in the three-match ODI series against India to be played between March 23 and 29. The IPL is scheduled to start on April 9.It is understood that on returning home, Archer, who has an ECB central contract to play in all three formats, is going to be administered one more injection in his right elbow before being assessed by the ECB medical staff around mid-April, after which a call would be taken on whether he would return to India for the IPL or not.Although the Royals have not issued a public statement, it is understood they have been updated about Archer’s availability, or the lack of it.England captain Eoin Morgan said that the final decision would rest with the medical team keeping the long term in mind, adding that Archer’s injury had “definitely gotten worse”.”We’re not quite sure yet,” Morgan told the press after the fifth T20I in Ahmedabad. “We’re going to wait until tonight and tomorrow to see how Jofra has pulled up. He’s clearly had a progressive injury that has become worse and does need attention, so it’ll be over to our medical team to make a decision and hopefully the decision that Jofra comes to will be the best for us in the long term.”I think it’s rare when a bowler isn’t managing pain – what they do is a tough job and if you ask any of them, are they ever pain-free, it’s a pretty rare instance if they say yes. Most of our bowlers are normally carrying niggles but certainly Jofra’s situation has definitely got worse, so it does need attention.”Archer was bought by the Royals in the 2018 auction for INR 7.2 crore (US$ 986,000 approx.) and the fast bowler has justified the high price by delivering some of the best spells of fast bowling in the tournament, finishing as the MVP in 2020. Although the Royals have not ruled out Archer returning for the second half of the tournament, it is understood the franchise is considering back-up plans – including finding a replacement – but are waiting for a formal communication from the ECB.Related

Morris was picked up by the Royals for INR 16.25 crore (US$ 2.226m approx.) at the 2021 auction, making him the most expensive player in the history of the IPL.Having missed the second Test in Chennai, Archer sat out the final Test in Ahmedabad as the elbow injury flared up, initially casting doubts over his availability for the five-match T20I series, which concludes on SaturdayAfter the Test series defeat, England head coach Chris Silverwood had conceded that Archer’s elbow injury was a concern. Although he ruled out surgery, Silverwood had said that the ECB medical staff was “talking about how we deal with this [issue in the] long-term”.Archer received a painkilling injection to the right elbow immediately after the first Test of the India series. In a media release, the ECB had pointed out that the injury was separate to the stress fracture he had suffered during the South Africa tour in January 2020, which had then ruled him out of the Sri Lanka tour and IPL 2020, both of which ended up being postponed. England are particularly keen to manage Archer carefully with an eye on the T20 World Cup and the Ashes later this year, both of which are long-term priorities.Archer pledged after the first T20I to “do everything in my power to make sure that I am going to the World Cup and the Ashes”, and said in an in-house interview on Friday: “Managing yourself is going to become more important than ever to make sure that you’re still fit or fully fit when that time comes”.England are yet to name their squad for the ODI series, which starts on Tuesday, March 23 in Pune, but have not flown any players out to India since the start of the T20Is. As a result, the ODI squad will be selected from the same group of 18 currently in India – the 16-man T20I squad, plus two reserves in Jake Ball and Matt Parkinson.

West Ham frontrunners to sign £25m talent who’d make Duran unplayable

The commencement of the 2024/25 Premier League season is just over four weeks away, and West Ham United are working night and day to fortify Julen Lopetegui's first-team squad.

While transfer news – of which there are plentiful rumours – dominates the Irons discourse right now, Lopetegui has been working hard on the pitch, with the club enjoying a week in Austria and recently drawing 2-2 against Hungarian champions Ferencvaros in a friendly.

There was plenty to admire from a tactical standpoint: high pressing, sharp fitness and solid positional understanding form the basis of the Spaniard's tactical remit, with Luis Guilherme catching the eye with his electrifying pace.

Former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui

The 18-year-old winger was signed from Brazilian club Palmeiras for £25.5m this summer and will prove invaluable in adding a dimension to the frontline. Lopetegui appears to be eyeing another fleet-footed winger to complete his attacking repackage.

West Ham transfer news

According to talkSPORT, West Ham are fighting to sign Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson after agreeing a deal for OGC Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo, who appears to be holding out for a move to Juventus.

Technical director Tim Steidten might appear to be prioritising the backline but West Ham are understood to be leading the race to sign Nelson, with Arsenal hoping to collect £25m for his sale.

Why West Ham are pushing to sign Reiss Nelson

Nelson, aged 24, has featured 89 times for Arsenal since graduating from Hale End, scoring eight goals and adding nine assists. He's also enjoyed loan spells overseas with Feyenoord and Hoffenheim, hitting the mark on both occasions.

Arsenal forward Reiss Nelson.

Preferentially performing on the right flank, he would make excellent competition for Jarrod Bowen, who was United's top scorer last season with 20 goals from 44 appearances.

Since returning from his loan spell in Holland at the end of the 2021/22 season, Nelson has started once in the Premier League, and with Mikel Arteta bent toward winning the title, it's unlikely that the snappy winger is going to see an upswing in opportunity next term, should he remain at the Emirates Stadium.

His pace and skilful dribbling could indeed see him serve as the perfect foil to Bowen, and perhaps even form a deadly partnership with fellow West Ham transfer target Jhon Duran.

Aston Villa's Duran is one of the Premier League's most fearsome young talents, scoring five goals across his first full season last year despite only starting five games, hailed as a "nightmare for defenders" by Villa captain John McGinn.

Nelson needs a change of scenery. But with his speed and playmaking, he could be the perfect man to drag defenders and create space for Duran to strike on goal. The Colombian centre-forward, albeit not playing much football, ranked among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues last season for goals scored per 90, as per FBref.

While it's hard to draw accurate conclusions about Nelson's ability given the sparsity of match action he has been afforded over the past couple of years, he has been called a "joke in training" with an "elite mentality" by one-time teammate Alex Iwobi – this is music to Steidten's ears no doubt.

He needs to take the shackles off and show England exactly what he's made of, and while West Ham have a talented team, Nelson has the skillset to finally rise to the fore. Alongside Duran, he could shape a deadly new duo.

Jack Wildermuth's double leads Queensland's inroads amid the rain

Queensland made good use of the limited time available on a rain-reduced opening day against Victoria by taking four wickets at Allan Border Field.A delayed start and further stoppages meant just 21.4 overs in the day but Jack Wildermuth continued his impressive form with two wickets in an over while Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett claimed one each.Nic Maddinson had been quickly out of the blocks after Victoria had been put in, the first runs off the bat coming from a hooked six in the opening over and he followed that by flicking a full delivery from outside off over the midwicket fence in the 10th over. However, the ball after that second six he drove hard at Wildermuth and was held at third slip. Two balls later Wildermuth struck again when he pinned the in-form Peter Handscomb lbw by one which nipped back.Victoria’s batsmen aided in their demise as Matt Short played well away from his body to give a catch to Joe Burns at first slip and provide Neser with a wicket on his Sheffield Shield comeback. The same could be said of Jake Fraser-McGurk who was also snapped up by Burns to leave Victoria in trouble at 4 for 75.Rain arrived an over later and this time there was no further breaks leaving Marcus Harris and Seb Gotch needing to do a repair job on the second day.

Kyle Mayers, the West Indies batting all-rounder, will play for Birmingham Bears in the last three games of the Vitality Blast group stage.Mayers, who scored an unbeaten double-century on Test debut in February, played his first T20I in New Zealand last year after impressing for Barbados Tridents in the 2020 Caribbean Premier League (CPL) with 222 runs. He has played six Tests and two T20Is and earned his maiden ODI cap in the first of three ODIs against Bangladesh at the beginning of this year, going on to play the remainder of that series.Mayers was lined up as a replacement overseas player by Rajasthan Royals in the 2021 IPL and had arrived in India shortly before the tournament’s postponement.Kyle Mayers said: “I hope that I can contribute with the bat and ball during these final three important games of the Blast… I’m very proud to join this list of players. Hopefully I can make some important contributions, which secure our path through to the knock-out stages.”Paul Farbrace, Bears Director of Cricket, said: “Being able to add Kyle, as a hard-hitting batsman and skilful seam bowler, to our squad as we bid for a quarter-final place is great boost. We also recognise how motivated Kyle is by this opportunity to feature in another leading T20 tournament with an ICC T20 World Cup just around the corner.”Mayers will be available for Friday’s derby at Worcestershire Rapids, followed by the return match at Edgbaston a week later and the final group game at home to Northants Steelbacks on July 18. The Bears sit fifth on the nine-team North Group table, level on 11 points with fourth-placed Durham and six points behind leaders Nottinghamshire.

Man Utd struck gold on "fabulous" star who’s worth even more than Ugarte

Manchester United are certainly pushing ahead in the transfer market to add a number of new gems to their ever-growing squad, with one bumper deal nearing its completion imminently.

The Red Devils are reportedly close to tying up a deal for Uruguay international Manuel Ugarte to join Erik Ten Hag's camp this summer, bolstering their central midfield spots subsequently.

The current Paris St. Germain man could end up partnering Kobbie Mainoo this coming season, therefore, with the now fully fledged England international eager to kick on at Old Trafford even more, after a stunning breakout campaign saw the teenager score in the FA Cup final.

Kobbie Mainoo's breakout season at Man United

There was plenty of hype surrounding Mainoo's name in Man United quarters when he was advancing up the youth ranks, with the slick 19-year-old midfielder accumulating 56 appearances for the U18s and U21s before being given his first real senior break.

Mainoo has now picked up 35 first-team appearances, with mostly all of those coming under the watchful guidance of Ten Hag, with five goals and one assist managed along the way.

Away from his general attacking output for his boyhood club, Mainoo's energy and tenacity for an often forlorn-looking Red Devils outfit when things have been stacked against them has also definitely made him a firm fan's favourite for those with connections to the red side of Manchester.

From his 24 top-flight games last campaign, the teenager made an average of four ball recoveries per clash, on top of winning five total duels on average, with this constant energy in the tank also helping England out in Germany this summer.

His best match during England's adventure out in Germany would arguably come against the Netherlands when glancing at his match numbers on the night, with the Man United youth product winning 100% of his duels against Ronald Koeman's nation, on top of completing one key pass when venturing forward.

Mainoo vs Ugarte transfer value

There's no doubt that the future is looking very bright for the Man United number 37 currently if he keeps this up and he could shine even more when paired up with a potential new teammate next to him in the form of Ugarte.

Yet, as much as Ugarte could arrive with a high price tag above his head, Mainoo is worth more than the PSG gem, according to the CIES Football Observatory.

Indeed, Mainoo's value in the midst of his explosion onto the senior scene now stands at £62m, which is £4m more than what the French titans are now reportedly demanding Man United cough up for Ugarte.

That is the case despite the South American midfielder having more experience on his side over the exciting 19-year-old, accumulating 200 senior matches across his career to date, all whilst only being four years older than the Red Devils teen.

Ugarte actually betters Mainoo in a number of areas when glancing at their respective games above too, with the Uruguayan target far more defensively sound than his exuberant counterpart, with his value potentially rising if he is a success in England soon.

The world will be expected of the 19-year-old this season to come regardless of the amount of incomings through the door, as the "fabulous" star – as he was labelled by his ex-Three Lions boss in Gareth Southgate – strives to improve even more as the years go on.

He could well find he learns more about himself partnered next to Ugarte, as another thrilling Premier League season now comes into view.

Irrespective of who he plays alongside in 2024/25, United have certainly struck gold with their academy graduate.

Winger with "outrageous" skill is now open to joining Everton this summer

Everton have received a big boost in their efforts to sign an "outrageous" attacking target this summer, with the player believed to be open to the move.

Everton transfer news

The Blues continue to search for new signings ahead of the new Premier League season, with attacking reinforcements appearing to be a key point of focus. Almeria forward Largie Ramazani has emerged as an eye-catching target, being seen as an alternative option to Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto.

Meanwhile, a new midfielder is required after Everton suffered the blow of losing Amadou Onana to Aston Villa earlier in the transfer window. Colombia and Palmeiras and Richard Rios has been mentioned as a strong target for the Merseysiders, with the 24-year-old starting six times for his country at Copa America.

Everton target Richard Rios in action for Colombia.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah has been linked with a switch to the Blues, too, with the Englishman potentially wanting a new challenge, in order to be more of a regular starter than he is at the Emirates. A loan move to Marseille does look on the cards, however, even though the transfer hasn't gone through yet, giving Sean Dyche a slight chance to hijack the move.

In what would be a shock deal, Everton have also been mentioned as possible suitors for former Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip, who is a free agent after departing Anfield at the end of last season, following eight years there. The 33-year-old may be hesitant to join, considering his Red past, but he is a hugely experienced figure who would add great squad depth at Goodison Park.

Everton boosted in pursuit of "outrageous" ace

According to a fresh report from TEAMtalk, Everton have now been boosted in their efforts to sign Ramazani this summer. The update claims that the 23-year-old "would be open" to joining the Blues "should they come in for him this summer", having shown interest in him during the January transfer window.

UD Almeria forward Largie Ramazani.

Ramazani would be such a strong signing for Everton before the new campaign gets underway, coming in as a young attacker with bags of potential. The Belgian chipped in with three goals and five assists in La Liga last season, which was a solid return considering his Almeria side eventually finished 19th in the table and suffered relegation, and he could thrive playing alongside superior footballers at Goodison.

Ramazani has been hailed as an "outrageous" talent by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who also described him as "the mini-Vinicius", such is his pace and trickery out wide.

Forget Phillips: Everton could land their own Caicedo in £17m sensation

The fact that he can play on either wing and also in a central position means he would bring great versatility to Dyche's squad, giving them much-needed pace and unpredictability in the final third too. He has scored three times for Belgium's Under-21s in the past, appearing for four different teams at youth international level, and will be hoping a big move to England can push him on towards senior caps.
