Sunderland hold real interest in signing free agent who Alex Ferguson loved

With the appointment of Regis Le Bris finally ending Sunderland's search for a new manager, the club can now look to bring in the new players that they hope can take them back to the top six of the Championship next season.

Sunderland target new talents this summer

The latest news out of the Stadium of Light has focused on the club bringing young stars to the club. Former West Ham man Divin Mubama is one name linked with a move to Wearside after the 19-year-old left his boyhood club at the end of last month.

Sunderland are also said to be one of a host of second tier clubs attempting to sign Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi on loan this summer. Whilst the Black Cats will face stiff competition to secure the services of the 21-year-old, the club's record of developing young talent could be what tips the scales in their favour.

Whilst rumours of Sunderland signing new players will excite much of their fanbase, the news of Chris Rigg's new contract at the Stadium of Light could be the club's best business of the summer. The 17-year-old academy graduate has agreed a new deal to keep him at the club until 2027.

With young players clearly important to Sunderland's strategy this summer, the club are also in the market for established second tier talents.

Sunderland interested in former Sheffield United star

As first reported on the X account of reliable Sunderland journalist Michael Graham, the Black Cats hold a very serious interest in signing experienced free agent Oliver Norwood. The 33-year-old was released by Sheffield United upon the expiration of his contract and Sunderland are now poised to make a move for the midfielder.

Graham claims that the Black Cats will face stiff competition from fellow second tier outfits West Bromwich Albion and Watford to secure Norwood's services this summer.

Norwood featured 27 times in the Premier League last season as the Blades suffered relegation back down to the second tier. Whilst the 33-year-old struggled against some of the top flight's elite talents in the middle of the park there is no doubt that his 381 appearances in the Championship would be a huge asset to Sunderland next season.

Whilst Norwood has been something of a journeyman across English football throughout his career, the midfielder started out as a product of Man United's youth academy. Despite never breaking into the first team at Old Trafford, Norwood made 33 appearances for the Red Devils' under 21s and even earned the praise of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Speaking to The Athletic back in 2020, former Man United reverses manager Warren Joyce recalled Sir Alex's admiration of Norwood telling the outlet: “The gaffer (Ferguson) really liked Norwood. He saw him as a good man, a genuinely good character. So, he came on to me and suggested I get in touch with Scunthorpe."

Whilst a career at the Theatre of Dreams never quite materialised, Norwood has gone on to become a proven performer at Championship level and could be a vital part of a Sunderland side that will no doubt be looking to make the playoffs next season.

Com a larga vitória conquistada em Cotia, o São Paulo teve maior tranquilidade e conseguiu administrar o jogo de volta em Porto Alegre, garantindo o empate por 0 a 0 e a vaga na final.

Azhar Ali: 'We feel we have enough runs on the board'

Kyle Jamieson, meanwhile, reckons Pakistan have a ‘par’ total on a pitch made for quick runs and quick wickets

Umar Farooq03-Jan-2021Azhar Ali believes Pakistan’s first-innings total of 297 is “decent and enough to build on”, given the grass cover on the pitch at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. That said, he felt there were runs to be had on the surface provided the batsmen stayed focused throughout, and left balls on length.Azhar fell seven short of scoring his 18th Test hundred, after anchoring two vital partnerships that revived Pakistan after they had stumbled to 83 for 4 shortly before lunch. First he added 88 with Mohammad Rizwan, who counterattacked with a brisk 61 off 71 balls, and then another 56 for the sixth wicket with Faheem Ashraf.Pakistan scored quickly throughout their innings, particularly in the post-lunch session when they made 130 runs at 4.33 per over.”I knew that the first couple of hours will be tough and obviously when you see this much grass on the pitch you have to focus for a longer time,” Azhar said at the end of the day’s play. “We were positive, especially when the ball is in your zone you must score off it, on these kind of wickets, because you’re going to get one good ball at some stage. You have seen the run rate was good so it’s a good enough pitch to score runs but obviously in between you need to leave on length, which was the key in my batting.”If you look at the pitch it’s a decent total, especially batting first. It’s been tough all day so we feel we have enough runs on the board and we can build on it tomorrow.”Kyle Jamieson was New Zealand’s most threatening bowler on the day, picking up his third five-wicket haul in just his sixth Test match. He had the top order reeling with a spell of 8-3-26-3 before lunch, and ended the innings with figures of 5 for 69 in 21 overs. He looked unplayable at times, especially when he dismissed Fawad Alam with a short ball that came back into the left-hander and reared towards his head.Azhar faced 37 balls from the 6’8″ Jamieson, scoring 26 runs including five fours.”The guy is quite tall and hitting good lines and lengths and swinging the ball both ways, so it was fun and tough as well,” Azhar said of his contest with Jamieson. “With this height we obviously needed to consolidate as much as we can. But when the ball is there to hit and whenever we got the opportunity we did score boundaries as well. But it was a tough spell to negotiate and at the end of the spell Rizwan got out when he was hitting the ball quite nicely but as far as that partnership was concerned we were very happy, especially the way we scored the runs during that period, it was fantastic.”Kyle Jamieson dismissed Fawad Alam with an unplayable short ball•AFP via Getty ImagesNearly 58% of Pakistan’s runs came in boundaries. Jamieson, who conceded 12 of the 43 fours struck on the day, said there had been more scoring opportunities for the batsmen here than during the first Test in Mount Maunganui because the pitch here had demanded fuller lengths from the bowlers, and consequently afforded them a smaller margin for error.”It was frustrating,” Jamieson said of the Azhar-Rizwan partnership. “I guess the difference between Bay Oval and here is, our natural length at Bay Oval was back a little bit, so when your natural variation is slightly fuller or slightly wider they don’t score as quickly, whereas at grounds like this, when your length needs to be fuller, it does provide scoring opportunities. It kind of felt like we were beating the bat a lot and they were also scoring freely, and that’s a tough one to get your head around. That’s two of probably their best batters, and it was I guess a pivotal time to pull them back and get one of them back in the sheds.”Jamieson said the pitch at Hagley Oval, over recent seasons. has usually lent itself to matches moving at pace, both in terms of runs and wickets.”I still think it’s down to the lengths you need to bowl,” he said. “We’ve seen in games gone by here and certainly in domestic cricket as well, that when your length is fuller, it’s pretty hard to nail that every time, and your natural variation, which is just either side of that, it does provide scoring opportunities. Through my five or six years I had playing domestic cricket down here, I guess that was certainly the case, where guys scored quicker but things happened quicker from a bowling point of view as well.”Going into the second day, Jamieson agreed with Azhar’s assessment about Pakistan having a decent total, but was confident his side could handle the tests thrown at them by Pakistan’s bowlers.”I think it’s a good one,” he said about Pakistan’s total. “I think it’s it’s probably par. I think they played well but like we saw, it was still good enough to to score and it wasn’t impossible to bat. So, you know, there’ll be challenges, I guess, in terms of the ball moving and potentially with bounce and and sideways movement, but it’s nothing new than what our guys have seen for four years and years. It’s a reasonable total and I think how we start will be pretty important.”

U.S. international Antonee Robinson helped seal a massive win for Fulham against Brentford with a last second assist to secure three points.

Fulham were behind for nearly all of Monday's clash with Brentford, with Vitaly Janelt's 24th-minute goal giving the visitors a lead they held until stoppage time. Harry Wilson leveled the scoreline at 1-1 with a goal in the 92nd minute, seemingly earning Fulham one point.

They'd end up with all three, though. Robinson broke through on the left and whipped in a cross in the 97th minute, putting the ball right on Wilson's head. His flicked-on header found the back of the net, sealing a huge come-from-behind win at Craven Cottage.

Robinson continues to be a key piece for Fulham, with his latest big moment earning the club a win that few could have predicted. The American was Fulham's Player of the Season in their last campaign and, to start this one, Robinson already has three assists, including Monday's vital set-up of Wilson's last-gasp winner.

That's great news for the USMNT, as Robinson remains a key piece on the left side of defense under new coach Mauricio Pochettino.

Fulham will play one more match before the start of the international break, with Robinson assumed to be part of the USMNT squad for the key Nations League clashes with Jamaica. Prior to that, though, Fulham will face Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in their final pre-international break match.

Crystal Palace ready to make a move for £20m "diamond" to replace Olise

With the wounds still fresh from Michael Olise's departure from Crystal Palace, the club are already looking for the Frenchman's replacement at Selhurst Park.

Olise alternatives at the top of Parish's to-do-list

Whilst the loss of Olise will be a significant blow to Oliver Glasner's side, the £50 million fee received will give the Eagles a much-needed boost in the transfer market. With Steve Parish now in a position to open his chequebook this summer, Palace have already been linked with a number of highly-rated wingers.

Jaden Philogene has been the name most prominently linked with the vacancy in Palace's wide areas with the Hull City star eager for a move to the Premier League this summer. It has been reported that the Eagles have already submitted a bid for the England under 21s ace.

The Championship is clearly the market of choice for Palace as they are also interested in deals for Sunderland talents Jack Clarke and Jobe Bellingham. Whilst the latter is more of a central midfielder than a wide man, there is no doubt that Clarke would be an exciting addition for Olise in Glasner's side.

With a new winger the top priority for Palace, it appears that the club are interested in a player with no shortage of experience in England.

Palace set to make a surprise move for Sarr

As reported by Give Me Sport, journalist Alan Nixon is claiming that Palace are ready to make a "dramatic" move to sign former Watford star Ismaila Sarr. The South London outfit have reportedly been interested in a move for the Senegalese winger for many years with Parish and Co viewing this summer as the best time to finally pull the trigger on a deal.

Currently playing at Marseille, Nixon reports that the French outfit would want a fee in the region of £20 million in order to part ways with Sarr this summer. The 26-year-old has struggled for form following his July 2023 move to the South of France with the most recent campaign seeing the winger score just three league goals.

ismaila-sarr-transfer-gossip-watford-everton-dyche-arnaut-danjuma

Despite his recent issues, there is no doubt that Sarr would still be a quality acquisition for the Eagles. The winger would arrive at Selhurst Park with no shortage of experience in England thanks to his 131 appearances for Watford.

The Senegalese attacker contributed 34 goals and 22 assists during his time with the Hornets, establishing himself as one of Watford's star players.

A November 2021 interview saw former Watford boss Claudio Ranieri sing the praises of the 26-year-old, saying of Sarr: “For me he is a diamond. He is a diamond and I have to work with him in every direction. I think he can achieve very big things.

“When I worked in France I was told there are so many diamonds there but it is important to work with the general football philosophy that is in Europe. Ismaila is one of the players who can decide – in any moment – the match"

Whilst the loss of Olise will be a significant blow to the Palace faithful, there are few better replacements on the market than Sarr when it comes to replicating his unpredictable flair on the flanks.

Cooper’s 1st move: Leicester could sign exciting star who dominated England

There has been another twist in the tale involving who will be the next Leicester City manager, as Steve Cooper now looks to be the new frontrunner to replace Enzo Maresca.

It felt almost inevitable at one point that Graham Potter would be occupying the Foxes dug-out next season, but as per football journalist Sami Mokbel, the newly promoted side are edging closer to the former Nottingham Forest boss being their chosen successor for the Italian instead.

There could now be some disappointment in the air at the King Power Stadium from supporters of the Foxes, with Cooper's win percentage in the Premier League standing at a low 21%, but the powers that be at Leicester must have seen something in the Welshman, to make him their next manager for the top-flight season ahead.

Cooper will hope to be backed in the transfer market to help Leicester consolidate themselves in the elite division, as rumours about incomings begin to heat up.

Leicester looking at entertaining Iceland international

According to a recent report in the Sunday Mirror, as relayed by TBR Football, Leicester are keen on adding Iceland international Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson to their ranks this summer, who now could be Cooper's first capture in the Foxes hot seat.

Both Newcastle United and West Ham United are also named as interested parties looking at the OH Leuven winger, who scored against England at Wembley in a 1-0 win for his nation before the Euros kicked off, terrorising Gareth Southgate's shellshocked Three Lions in the process.

Hammering home an early first-half effort past stand-in England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, the new Premier League side could be looking at the Scandinavian gem as a rival for Stephy Mavididi next season, who took the Championship by storm last campaign, with Leicester winning the league title at the end of the 46-game marathon.

What Thorsteinsson could offer Leicester

With no other real recognised left wingers in the Foxes camp right now minus Mavididi, Thorsteinsson signing on the dotted line soon could be a worthwhile capture as Cooper attempts to stamp his mark on his new Leicester team.

archie-gray-stephy-mavididi-leeds-opinion

Last season, playing out in Belgium, the in-demand 25-year-old picked up seven goals and seven assists from 40 clashes in all competitions.

Played through the centre as an attacking midfielder, or down the left wing last season, Thorsteinsson's lively nature – which was evident in the nine duels he went in for against England – was clear for all to see when donning a Leuven strip too, amassing nine yellow cards across those 40 games, as a tireless midfielder with a bite present in his game.

Some way off being as explosive as Mavididi when venturing forward over the last year, as can be seen when comparing the two wingers above, Thorsteinsson will still aim to push his ex-Arsenal counterpart all the way if signed, who managed 19 goal contributions in the second-tier.

Cooper loved hard-working utility figures, like the Icelandic Foxes target, when he was still at the helm at the City Ground, with figures such as Philip Zinckernagel never quite the main man under the Welsh boss at Forest, but he still impressively boasted seven goals and ten assists during the 2021/22 campaign, which ended in the glory of promotion.

Thorsteinsson could be just that for Cooper in the here and now, if he is to take the reins at the King Power shortly, as Leicester embark on a season back in the Premier League very soon.

European club thinking of making a move for "excellent" £4m Rangers striker

With the transfer window now in full swing, it appears that some of Rangers' most valuable talents could be on their way out of Ibrox this summer.

Rangers braced for numerous stars to exit this summer

The most recent news out of Ibrox has concerned the future of some of Rangers' biggest names. The future of current club captain James Tavernier has occupied many of the headlines in Glasgow, with the full-back offered an astronomical deal to leave Ibrox and reunite with former boss Steven Gerrard at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

Latest Rangers transfer news: Gers want PL teen; Saudi link to midfield ace

Who is Philippe Clement eyeing up in the transfer window ahead of his first full season at Ibrox?

ByRoss Kilvington Jul 9, 2024

Centre-back Connor Goldson was also thought to be joining Tavernier in Saudi Arabia, though recent links to Birmingham City could see him swap the Champions League for League One next season. Goldson grew up in nearby Wolverhampton and could be tempted by a move back to the Midlands during the transfer window.

To make matters worse for Philippe Clement, Rangers have been dealt a significant blow in terms of their incomings, with a deal to sign Norwich City's Kenny McLean falling through after the parties failed to agree on personal terms.

Norwich midfielder Kenny McLean.

With much of the Ibrox faithful hopeful that their club would use this summer to bolster their squad, the Scottish Premiership runners-up look to have been dealt a further blow as a European club consider a move for a Rangers striker.

Italian club discuss a deal to sign Dessers

As first reported by Sport Witness, the Italian press are claiming that Cagliari are thinking about Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers to improve their squad next season. The Ibrox outfit reportedly value the striker at €5m (£4m) and the Nigeria international's current deal is set to keep him at the club until 2027.

Dessers was a vital part of Clement's team last season, scoring 16 goals in the league as Rangers fell agonisingly short of the Scottish Premiership title. This tally saw Dessers finish as the club's second-highest scorer, just behind penalty-taker Tavernier.

The 29-year-old only joined Rangers last season in a move from Italian outfit US Cremonese. Since then, Dessers has gone on to establish himself as a regular fixture in the Gers' starting XI.

The striker has also been a player who has stepped up in big moments for Rangers, with former boss Michael Beale waxing lyrical about Dessers after the UEFA Champions League play-off first leg against PSV back in August 2023:

"It is a new team, and we have got new players. I thought Cyriel Dessers was excellent. He backed into the centre-halves, but he got us up the pitch. At times I would like people to get closer to him."

Whilst the fee received for Dessers will go some way towards funding new recruits, it is likely that Clement will struggle to find a player that can match the Nigerian's output for his side.
