Player Zone: Liverpool are looking to get in early on Sobhi’s expected rise

Before Ramadan Sobhi even arrived in England two summers ago, he’d already developed a preceding reputation – one that seemed too good to be true.A promising return of 17 goals in 71 appearances across all competitions for Al Ahly had earned him the monikers ‘Egyptian Messi’ and ‘Ramadona’, so after signing for Stoke City instead of one of the Premier League’s top clubs in a £5million deal, the immediate assumption was one of such lofty comparisons being more to sell transfer rumours than give a genuine evaluation of the winger’s ability and potential. No doubt, one-and-a-half seasons into his Premier League career, Sobhi is still a gigantic chasm away from being anywhere near parity with two of the greatest talents South America has ever produced. He’s not even a guaranteed starter for a Stoke City side currently in the relegation zone and averaging just a shade more than one goal per match in the top flight. But two goals in two appearances against West Brom and Huddersfield last month highlighted the steady progress Sobhi has made over the last 18 months, especially by the standards of a 20-year-old undertaking a drastic transition from Middle Eastern to Premier League football while plying his trade with one of the division’s most turbulent sides. That’s perhaps why Jurgen Klopp has taken an interest in Sobhi, according to Sky Sports’ Peter O’Rourke.

There’s little doubt the Liverpool boss has an eye for a player ready to elevate his game to the next level. That’s exactly what Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Georginio Wijnaldum have done at Liverpool, and it’s exactly how he managed to develop a Borussia Dortmund team of young, emerging talents into back-to-back Bundesliga winners and Champions League finalists. Clearly, Klopp sees something worthwhile in Sobhi too.

Of course, it’s still very early days and any move for the 19-cap Egyptian is far more likely to come in the summer than by the end of the January transfer window, not least because the Potters find themselves in a relegation battle. But combined with his two goals, Sobhi boasts two statistical returns this season that particularly stand out as signs of real promise – the grit and determination to average 1.4 tackles per ninety minutes, alongside the natural flair to complete 2.1 dribbles in the same time frame.

Prolific dribblers are always exciting talents, simply because they can manipulate the ball so well and cause so much devastation when they reach top speed, but it’s the combination with industry when out of possession that will impress Klopp most.

Don’t expect immediate movement on this one, but don’t be surprised if we see Sobhi given a chance at Anfield in the near future either; with figures in the transfer market spiralling out of control, it makes far more sense for Liverpool to invest in the young winger early before his price-tag goes through the roof.

Arsenal boss reveals Giroud facing spell on sidelines

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that Olivier Giroud is facing a spell on the sidelines after picking up an injury against West Ham United on Tuesday night.

Giroud appeared to pull his hamstring in the latter stages of the EFL Cup quarter-final, which the Gunners won 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Danny Welbeck.

The 31-year-old has been linked with a move away from Arsenal in recent weeks having struggled for Premier League action during the 2017-18 campaign.

That said, the forward, who is valued at £19.8m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has made 25 appearances in all competitions for his London club this season.

Wenger has admitted that he is unsure of the extent of Giroud’s injury, but the Arsenal boss is concerned that the issue could lead to an extended spell on the sidelines.

Wenger told reporters:

“In his statement [to me], it doesn’t look very good. It looks like that (missing the rest of the month). We have to wait. Nowadays you do the scan 48 hours after the injury.

“That will happen on Thursday, then we’ll have a precise kind of grade on what his hamstring is.

“When you listen to him, the pain is quite big, but the grade is not always linked with the intensity of the pain.”

Arsenal and Manchester City both booked their spots in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup with wins on Tuesday night.

Arsenal will return to Premier League action with a clash against Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.

In Focus: Moving for Souare would be a risk for Newcastle United

Newcastle United are interested in signing Crystal Palace left-back Pape Souare on loan for the rest of the season, according to talkSPORT presenter Geoff Peters.

What’s the word?

Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez made it clear in the summer that he did not have the perfect transfer window.

The Spaniard now has an opportunity to add some new players to the squad.

A large number of rumoured transfer targets have been linked with loan moves to St James’ Park.

On this occasion,ÂtalkSPORTÂpresenter Peters has claimed that Newcastle have opened talks with Palace over the signing Souare on a temporary basis.

There is believed to be a desire from all involved to get a deal done.

Is Souare a good option for theÂMagpies?

Benitez has seemingly been hunting for a left-back for a while due to Paul Dummett’s lengthy injury absence.

The defender has been on the sidelines for the majority of the season so far with an injury that he picked up on the opening day of the campaign in August.

The 26-year-old has since returned to the fold, playing in four games so far.

From Souare’s point of view, the move would be a positive one as he is in need of some game time.

For Newcastle, though, there is a risk involved given the left-back’s injury history.

The 27-year-old had to fight back to fitness after breaking his leg in a car crash in September 2016.

Since his recovery, Souare has struggled to secure a regular spot in the team, having made just three appearances in all competitions this season.

Bringing in a left-back with little game time during a relegation battle, may not be the wisest move.

In Focus: Sturridge could have been the Newcastle signing that guaranteed survival

According to reports in The Guardian, Newcastle United look set to lose out to West Bromwich Albion in the race to sign Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge on loan before the January transfer window slams shut on Wednesday.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Guardian says that the Baggies are set to sign the out of favour Reds centre-forward on a temporary basis until the end of the season despite reports to the contrary earlier that suggested the England international was heading for St James’ Park.

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is desperate to add a new striker – and possibly two – before the close of play on Wednesday, but it doesn’t look like it will be the 28-year-old after The Guardian reports West Brom have agreed to pay £1.5m to bring him to the Hawthorns on loan for the remainder of the campaign.

The Tyneside outfit will now have to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements, with Feyenoord’s Nicolai Jorgensen still a top target.

Would Sturridge have been a good signing for Newcastle?

If he they could have kept him fit, he certainly would have been.

The 28-year-old has shown throughout his career that he is a natural goalscorer if he is consistently on the pitch, and he has scored 75 Premier League goals in his career, as well as 64 in 133 games for Liverpool in total.

With the Magpies only scoring 22 goals in their 24 top flight matches this season, it is easy to see where one of their biggest issues lies, and they need to add goals to their team in the last couple of days of the January window.

How much of a blow is it to miss out?

It will be a huge blow for Benitez, especially losing out to a team currently in 19th position.

While they may also want someone like Jorgensen, Sturridge had that Premier League experience and know-how, and he was a proven goalscorer at this level.

His presence in the team would have given a huge boost to a club that is desperately in need of one, and there would have been a confidence that the England international would have got the goals to keep the Magpies up.

What happens next?

Newcastle will continue working on other targets, and will have to hope they get at least one over the line by the close of play on Wednesday.

Player Ratings: Who was Liverpool’s best player vs Tottenham

Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham at Anfield had it all, if you’re a fan of football. It had controversy, drama, late action, dodgy decisions and stunning goals from both teams.

Unfortunately, though, if you’re a fan of Liverpool, you’re probably unlikely to see it that way – at least until a few days after the game when all has calmed down a bit.

Controversy aside, when you’re leading after a stoppage time goal – courtesy of Mohamed Salah – you should probably win the game. But a point in a game where the Reds were dominated for long periods without the ball is not the worst result they could have had.

Still, in the end, a point keeps Liverpool in the hunt for a top four finish. Form is important at this stage of the season, especially with the Champions League just around the corner, so it’s a good chance to look at which players played well on Sunday afternoon.

With that in mind, Liverpool fans, we want to know who you thought was your best player. There’s probably only going to be one winner here, but it would be remiss of us not to take anything for granted and at least ask the question. Give us your rating out of ten for each of the players below….

Arsenal fans feel sad looking back at past glory

Every so often, football clubs post tweets looking back at past wins or major transfers.

Today, Arsenal’s social media team posted a throwback picture of Thierry Henry’s goal celebration against Real Madrid.

The Gunners became the first English team to win at the Bernabeu thanks to the Frenchman’s strike in the first leg of their last-16 clash in the Champions League.

The win was made even more dramatic as Henry found the goal in the 93rd minute of the encounter against the star-studded Galacticos.

The retired striker is a well-loved figure at Arsenal as he helped the team win two Premier League titles, three FA Cups and scored 228 goals during an eight-year spell at the North London club.

Fastforward 12 years from that match against Real Madrid, and Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal team are now competing in the Europa League having failed to finish in the top four last season.

Fan reacting to the Twitter post expressed sadness that the glory days are far behind them.

In Focus: Zenit over-confidence is something Celtic can exploit

As reported by The Scottish Sun, a former FC Zenit stalwart expects the Russians to be able to overcome the challenge of Celtic in UEFA Europa League action this evening.

What’s the story?

Aleksei Igonin made over 150 appearances for the Russian outfit between 1998 and 2003 so is more than familiar with the expectations of the visitors to Celtic Park.

However, the retired player’s belief that Zenit can deal with what Celtic have to offer perhaps highlights an over-confidence in the Russian camp that the Hoops can exploit after kick-off.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, Igonin said of tonight’s encounter:

I have no doubts the Scots will endlessly load high balls in from the wings in their own half. So it is important Zenit stand up to this onslaught early on. But I am certain Zenit will score at least once. Aleksandr Kokorin is in great form, but the best player at the moment is Emiliano Rigoni. He is a constant danger on the right wing and is capable of producing dangerous crosses. He is key to Zenit getting through.

It’s clear that Igonin may not have seen much of Celtic in action recently given his belief Brendan Rodgers’ will be loading high balls forward and perhaps it’s a misconception that plays into the Hoops’ hands.

Will Zenit be ill-prepared for Rodgers’ possession-heavy approach to football, something he has refused to compromise regardless of the level of opponent so far in his Celtic career?

Zenit’s dangers

One thing Igonin is certainly right about is the key men that Celtic will need to stop if they’re to have hope of progressing to the last 16 of the competition.

Aleksandr Kokorin, who has scored at Celtic Park before with Dinamo Moscow, is showing a lethal touch this season with 18 goals in all competitions. That’s especially true in European competition where he’s netted eight times in just nine appearances.

The other big danger is Emiliano Rigoni, who averaged a goal every 77 minutes in the Europa League group stages this season, netting six times in total and also providing two assists, both of which came away from home.

The pair scored 11 of Zenit’s 17 goal haul in the last stage, a team total that was more than any other side in the competition.

Can the Hoops defence raise their game and stop this deadly duo?

Sunderland fans are fuming with Coleman’s comment on home form

Sunderland fans are not happy with Chris Coleman’s comments about their home form.

Speaking after yet another home defeat on Tuesday, Coleman seemed optimistic about the game at QPR this weekend solely because it isn’t at home.

“We have another game in 4 days, maybe it is good it is away from home because we do not perform here,” the Welshman said.

Coleman’s side showed all their worst qualities against Villa on Tuesday night, allowing Lewis Grabban to score from a failed clearance before letting James Chester nod home in first half stoppage time to double the lead.

The hosts showed little signs of life before conceding the third goal, prompting shouts of “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” from the home fans.

Three-nil did not flatter Aston Villa, and the home form simply cannot continue if Sunderland are to stay up. The Black Cats have won just twice at home in the league all season.

The final home game of the season is against promotion favourites Wolves, but Preston, Sheffield Wednesday, Norwich and Burton Albion all make trips to the Stadium of Light before then. While none of these are easy fixtures, they are certainly winnable.

Sunderland fans have been reacting to Coleman’s comments on Twitter, and they are not best pleased…

Sunderland fans fuming with home ticket prices

Sunderland fans have been taking out their frustrations on Twitter after the club announced home tickets for sale at £25.

It’s been a miserable season for Sunderland fans, and what will make it even more infuriating is that the worst of it has come at home.

The Black Cats are on track for a historically bad home record this season, having won just twice at the Stadium of Light all season (1-0 wins against Hull and Fulham, not exactly exciting for the fans).

This week, the club announced tickets on sale for their final home games of the season, and needless to say fans are less than impressed with the pricing.

The upper tier of the Stadium of Light is set to be closed next season to improve the atmosphere as attendances drop. Matchday tickets are now being sold at £25, and some fans are suggesting they give them away for free if they’re so intent on improving the atmosphere.

The club ownership, most notably Ellis Short, has come under considerable criticism from fans for quite some time, and their decision to keep ticket prices relatively high for a Championship club is not sitting well with the fans.

Everton fans will love reports on Antonee Robinson

Everton fans are impressed by loaned out defender Antonee Robinson, and they’ll love what Bolton fans are saying about the youngster.

Robinson received his first international call-up for the United States this week, and the young left back has been in sensational form on loan at Bolton this season.

Robinson joined Everton aged 11, and has won league titles with the U18s and U23s. After his successful time in the youth setup with Everton, he moved to Bolton on a season-long loan last summer.

The 20 year-old has impressed Bolton fans with his blistering pace and tireless forward runs, grabbing four assists in 22 Championship starts from left back this season.

He has now received his first international call-up, and will be in the United States squad for their upcoming friendly against Paraguay.

Everton have had their fair share of defensive troubles this season, with Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman both missing time through injury. Baines is now 33, prompting plenty of links to Luke Shaw in recent days, but the solution to replacing Baines could already be at the club.

Something that will particularly please Everton fans is how highly Bolton fans are speaking of Robinson. Some of the best Twitter reactions can be found below…
