Was confident Jess Jonassen 'would get the job done' – Meg Lanning

Meg Lanning had “full confidence” in Jess Jonassen when she handed the ball over to the left-arm spinner at the back-end of India’s chase. Jonassen took 5 for 12 to trigger a collapse that saw seven wickets go down for 29 runs – she dismissed Harmanpreet Kaur the over after Megan Schutt had sent back Smriti Mandhana and put India’s chase of 156 in a tailspin after they had reached 115 for 3 in the 15th over.”She’s been in fine form bowling for a long time now. For a spinner to be able to bowl the last three overs from one end in a T20 chase is a very good effort. You don’t see that often, but I had full confidence she would be able to get the job done,” Lanning said. “She is very calm and has really good skills and she can bowl at any point in the innings. It’s nice to see her really confident now. She is an important part of the team. Hopefully she can continue her form going forward.”All five of Jonassen’s wickets came in her second spell, in the last six overs of India’s innings, during which they lost a wicket in every over but the 19th. Until then, Mandhana and Kaur had set India up nicely with a 50-run stand.”We talk a lot about trying to stay in the game. T20 cricket can turn very quickly. We knew if we could get a wicket, break that partnership quickly, we could potentially get a bit of momentum back. Mandhana batted brilliantly; sort of hard to slow it down, but once we got that wicket, we were able to turn the screws and put them under pressure, so it’s a good lesson in staying in the game and making sure you just stick it out and hope it will turn your way,” Lanning said.In their previous meeting, Jonassen had opened the bowling and bowled just one over for 11. Sixteen-year-old Shafali Verma had been particularly severe on spinners that day, and Lanning explained that was one of the reasons Australia had to turn to pace in the final.”In the first game, Verma was taking on the spinners a fair bit, so we went to pace a little bit. The wicket today was a bit up and down, so we used a bit more pace,” Lanning said. “In that round [league-stage] game against India, I could have perhaps brought [Jonassen] on a little bit early, and that’s what I looked at in review [of that match]. It’s certainly not a game plan; it’s just a gut feeling but she’s shown she can do the job at any point in the match.”This come-from-behind win has significance beyond just a series title. It comes shortly after the Saturday match during which India had made easy work of a stiff target of 174 and put Australia on the verge of being knocked out from the series. More importantly, it comes less than two weeks before the T20 World Cup, which will start later this month. Lanning acknowledged that winning a tough series like this one was perfect ahead of the big tournament.”It’s been a brilliant series for us,” she said. “We have been put to the test every game we have played [by the] two world-class sides, who are going to do very well in the World Cup coming up. Both with the bat and ball, we feel like we have improved over the tournament.”We still feel probably there are a few areas to do that again. I will take this tournament any day getting into the World Cup, to be put under the pump and having to respond to that is a really good thing for this team and we will take a lot of confidence out of the win today.”

Arteta could already have Arsenal’s answer to Endrick in Hale End star

Handing the youth an opportunity is key to the long-term success of any club, but even more so for a side like Arsenal.

Bukayo Saka is by far the biggest prospect to have thrived in the first team since progressing via the Hale End academy in recent years, but there’s plenty of talent waiting for a chance to shine.

Bukayo Saka.

The Gunners’ number seven will without doubt be a role model to those keen to replicate his exact footsteps, but the academy players will also be inspired by the rise to stardom of a certain Endrick.

The Brazilian has always been a one-of-a-kind prospect, but he truly announced himself in Europe last week on international duty, scoring against both England and Spain.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at an Arsenal U21 diamond who could be their answer to Endrick.

Endrick’s rise to success

At just 16 years of age, highly-rated wonderkid Endrick made his competitive debut for Brazilian side Palmeiras, becoming the club’s youngest debutant.

However, the centre forward was far from suffocated by the hostile atmosphere and experienced opposition, also taking on the status of the second-youngest goalscorer ever in the Serie A, Brazil’s top flight.

Endrick scores for Brazil

During his first real campaign in the first-team setup, Endrick helped Palmeiras achieve a consecutive league title, scoring 11 goals in 31 matches.

This form saw the youngster attract attention from across Europe before eventually signing a £60m deal to join Real Madrid this summer.

But what if Arsenal had their own version of Endrick, who’s just waiting to be given a break?

Arsenal's "golden" Hale End sensation may be the perfect Partey replacement

With the fight for Champions League glory and Premier League triumph set to continue until the end of the season, finding an opportunity to give the youth a chance has been difficult for Mikel Arteta.

However, just like Endrick, Ethan Nwaneri made his competitive debut at an extremely young age, which clearly highlights just how talented the special ace is and how much the Spaniard believes in him.

The now-17-year-old was handed his first competitive appearance for the Gunners against Brentford in 2022, where the versatile ace took to the pitch at just 15 years of age, the youngest ever Arsenal debutant.

Despite holding such a prestigious record, Nwaneri has continued to work tirelessly in the academy to impress, mainly playing as an attacking midfielder this campaign.

As you can see by the table above, the “special” gem, as described by U23 Scout Antonio Mango, has been on fire, taking on more goal-scoring responsibility than creativity, with 14 goals and three assists in just 15 matches.

The number 63 is on a particular hot streak at the moment after being handed a short cameo by Arteta during the 6-0 win over West Ham United, scoring in his last five matches for club and country.

Although the next step for Nwaneri may be away from the Gunners, potentially on a loan, Endrick is the prime example that if you’re good enough, then opportunities will present themselves.

Arteta has certainly shown his intent to include the youngster in his squad, and with the England U-17 international signing his first professional contract this week, Arsenal well and truly have a superstar in the making.

Ratcliffe means business: Big update on future of £300k-p/w Man Utd star

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reportedly made a decision over the future of a £300,000-a-week Manchester United player – one who has been hailed as "world-class".

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's influence growing

It's fair to say that Ratcliffe is a hugely popular figure at Old Trafford right now, with his 25% stake in the club approved last week, not to mention making an instant impact with key decisions.

One of those is trying to bring in Dan Ashworth from Newcastle United, making him United's new sporting director in the process, whereas exciting plans to 'regenerate' an area neighbouring MediaCity and Old Trafford have also been announced.

New signings are also being looked at, with the Red Devils being linked with plenty of players of late, including Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer, who could look to move away this summer. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has also claimed that United are interested in signing exciting Benfica midfielder Joao Neves, scouting him a number of times, with Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel emerging as a target in recent days, too.

There will also be speculation over the futures of certain current players at Old Trafford, and a big update has now emerged regarding one such figure.

'Big' update on Marcus Rashford's Man Utd future

According to a new 'big' update from Football Insider, Ratcliffe wants Marcus Rashford to stay at Manchester United, despite being seen as a possible replacement for Kylian Mbappe at Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford.

"New Man United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS outfit are keen to keep Marcus Rashford at the club amid links with Paris Saint-Gerrmain, sources have told Football Insider. Widespread speculation linking the 26-year-old to the French champions has cropped up again with Kylian Mbappe set to exit the club in the off-season.

"It is believed INEOS are keen to keep him at United as their new regime gets into full swing. A well-placed source has told Football Insider that last season’s heroics from Rashford are fresh in the memories of club chiefs – who 'know what he can do' at his best."

Rashford is having a below-par season to date, with his body language often leaving a lot to be desired, and a tally of five goals in 24 appearances in the Premier League is a disappointing return. The £300,000-a-week ace is still a top player on his day, however, and at 26, there could still be plenty more to come from him.

The fact that Ratcliffe wants him to stay is a good thing, though, and it would be a shock if he didn't come out the other side of his current dip.

India won't 'jump the gun' with Ajinkya Rahane, says Virat Kohli

Despite an up-and-down 2018 in Test cricket and a difficult county stint this year, India’s Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has received the backing of captain Virat Kohli, who reaffirmed that he thought of his colleague as a “solid player”. Speaking before the tours of the USA and the West Indies, where India will play their maiden World Test Championship series, Kohli expected Rahane to “come around” as he has “done the job under pressure”.Once a mainstay in India’s batting line-up, especially on away tours, Rahane was left out of the first two Tests on the South Africa tour last year before returning to the XI for the entire England and Australia series, as well as the West Indies series at home. But, in this period, Rahane didn’t look like the confident batsman of the past, especially in 2014. Since his last Test century – 28 innings ago and spanning nearly two years – Rahane has made only five 50-plus scores. He averages 24.85 during this period.Kohli, however, believes there is no need to “jump the gun” on a player like Rahane because of the composure and the reliability he brings.”Jinks [Rahane] has been a solid player for us through and through and that’s always been our communication,” Kohli said. “He is one of the most sorted guys. Really, really composed, reads the game well also, priceless fielder, we have all seen the impact he can make in Test cricket with his slip catching and everything. I think under pressure he has performed really well. The guy averages 43 (40.55) in Test cricket, it’s not like he is in the early 30s. I don’t think we should jump the gun on someone like Jinks because he has done the job for you under pressure.”Rahane had been the vice-captain for the 2018 South Africa tour too, but his Mumbai team-mate Rohit Sharma was preferred in the XI for the first two Tests because of “the way he (Rohit) was batting against Sri Lanka and in the ODI format,” Kohli explained. On returning to the XI, Rahane scored a fighting 48 at No. 6 in the third innings of the Test, helping India secure their only win by 63 runs.He then went on to score two half-centuries each in England and Australia but his average in those series were 25.70 and 31 respectively, much below the standards he had set for himself at the beginning of his career. Since his 132 against Sri Lanka in August 2017, he has averaged below nine other Indian batsmen who have played at least ten innings in that period.Rahane has turned to first-class cricket several times in this phase: against England Lions before the England Tests last year, versus New Zealand A prior to the Australia Tests, and a county stint this summer with Hampshire. In the county circuit, he began with a century against Nottinghamshire, his first in 39 first-class innings, but couldn’t keep up the tempo. He was unable to score a half-century in the remaining 11 innings and even bagged a pair against Essex, playing all of three balls in the match. What lies ahead of him is a two-Test series in the West Indies, where the hosts’ fast bowlers have troubled many a team recently. Not to forget, Rohit, fresh from hitting five centuries at the World Cup, is breathing down his neck for a spot in the XI.”It’s a patch that anyone can go through but I think he will come around because he is that good a player and when he does, we know he can be very consistent,” Kohli said. “He is one of the pillars of our batting order that we can bank on. Him and [Cheteshwar] Pujara, as I’ve said, have been our most solid Test players. I am sure along with Puji playing so well, myself at No. 4, Jinks will also come into the groove and once he starts scoring, he can spring in scores on a consistent basis.”We are not at all worried about where he’s placed. It’s about giving him confidence and he really wants to turn it around. That’s the most important thing and that’s all that matters.”

Spurs schedule talks to sign Son 2.0 in a deal that could be done ASAP

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be eyeing up their third signing of the January transfer window after deals for Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin…

Spurs' search for a new winger

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Lilywhites are pushing to secure a deal for Club Brugge forward Antonio Nusa to bolster their attack.

The reporter claims that a new round of talks between the two clubs has been scheduled as Spurs look to beat off competition from elsewhere to sign the young whiz.

Antonio Nusa in Norway training.

However, Romano adds that the teenage dynamo would like to remain at the Belgian side until the end of the season, which means that Ange Postecoglou may not have him as part of the squad until the summer.

The Australian head coach could land Heung-min Son 2.0 by winning the race to sign the 18-year-old forward, who The Guardian previously claimed is valued at £25m by Brugge.

Heung-min Son's goal record at Spurs

Tottenham's captain has proven himself to be a lethal scorer for the club from a left wing position over the course of a number of seasons in England.

The South Korea international has plundered an exceptional 157 goals and 85 assists in 393 appearances in all competitions, including 115 goals in 288 Premier League matches.

This means that Son has averaged a goal or an assist every 1.62 games on average throughout his career with Spurs, which shows that he has been a consistently reliable attacking threat out wide as a scorer and a creator of goals.

However, he turns 32 in July, and Postecoglou may have one eye on the future and what life will look like after Son, with Nusa possibly coming in as the long-term successor to his position.

The stats that show why Nusa could be Son 2.0

The 18-year-old has showcased his potential for club and country this season with an impressive return at the top end of the pitch despite limited minutes on the pitch.

Nusa has only started six Pro League matches for Brugge but has chipped in with three goals and two assists, whilst he has also created five 'big chances' for his teammates and could argue that they have let him down in front of goal with their wasteful finishing.

The right-footed left winger, who U23 scout Antonio Mango claimed has "beautiful potential", has also completed 2.7 dribbles per game for his club in the league.

As you can see in the table above, the Brugge starlet has also caught the eye on the international stage with Norway this season with some impressively creative performances for his country.

Nusa has racked up three goals and five assists in seven starts across the Pro League and European Championship qualifiers for club and country this season, which is one goal contribution every 0.86 starts on average.

There is no guarantee that he would be able to remain as consistent as that over the course of an entire season of regular starts but the young gem also has plenty of time on his side to develop that consistency.

The Brugge wizard could learn from Son at Spurs before eventually taking over as his successor and Postecoglou's next version of the South Korean marksman further down the line if he can fulfill his potential, which is why this could be an excellent signing for Spurs.

Zak Crawley stars with home-grown hundred to carry Kent's fortunes

Zak Crawley’s stylish century led a plucky Kent recovery on the opening day of their 107th Tunbridge Wells Cricket Week fixture against first-division rivals Nottinghamshire.Kent supporters, who made up the vast majority of a sun-kissed 2,000 crowd for the first day of this Specsavers County Championship clash, must have feared the worst after seeing five wickets fall before lunch barely four days after being skittled for 59 by Somerset. However, Crawley – educated four miles down the road at Tonbridge School, the alma mater of Colin Cowdrey and Ed Smith – joined forces with Grant Stewart in a seventh-wicket stand that added exactly a century.Kent’s last-wicket partners Matt Milnes and Harry Podmore then added an invaluable 55 in 14.2 overs to take Kent to the relative riches of 309 all out to bank three batting bonus points. In the 10 overs through to the close, Nottinghamshire’s left-handed openers Ben Duckett and Ben Slater survived a couple of scares in reaching 30 without loss, a deficit of 279 runs going into day two.Batting first after an uncontested toss and on a pitch showing some greenish tints following heavy rain in the Royal Spa Town on Sunday morning, Kent lost Sean Dickson to only the third ball of the game from James Pattinson, the Australian Test bowler. Having got off the mark with a thick edge through the cordon to third man, Dickson drove with firm hands at a Pattinson leg-cutter to be caught behind by Tom Moores.Joe Denly, in need of runs to push his case for inclusion in England’s Ashes squad, had only eight to his name when he worked across the line against Pattinson to depart lbw after umpire Steve O’Shaughnessy upheld the appeal.Though neither player looked totally secure, Crawley and Daniel Bell-Drummond took Kent’s score on to 50 before Bell-Drummond (4) offered a low chance that keeper Moores, diving to his right, failed to cling on to, much to the annoyance of Jake Ball, the bowler.Pattinson rested after a fine spell of 8-2-27-2 at The Nevill Ground’s Pavilion End, to be replaced by Luke Fletcher who struck with his ninth delivery by snaring Bell-Drummond leg-before.Fletcher struck again four overs later, running a full delivery past the crab-like defensive prod of Heino Kuhn to peg back leg stump.Crawley posted his 68-ball 50 with nine fours, but Ball’s luck changed just before the break when he had Ollie Robinson caught on the drive after a game off pass-the-parcel in the slip cordon. The thick edge was initially dropped by Mullaney at third, parried by Matthew Carter at second and eventually caught by Duckett at first slip.Soon after lunch, Crawley lost sixth-wicket partner Wiaan Mulder leg before to the excellent Pattinson, bringing Stewart to the crease to forge a century stand inside 32 overs.Stewart reached his 50 from 69 balls while Crawley posted his third first-class century from 157 balls and with 14 fours before Pattinson’s return caused further mayhem.Stewart missed an ambitious drive to have leg stump pegged back then Ollie Rayner, the Middlesex loanee, bagged a golden duck on his Kent debut, leg before when prodding forward propping forward.Pattinson should have had Podmore caught in the deep for 13 soon after tea when Samit Patel downed a low chance on the run at deep mid-wicket, but two balls later the Melbourne-born seamer ended Crawley’s 284-minute stay with his score on ‘Nelson’s’ by running one through the right-hander’s gate to demolish off stump.Podmore was left high and dry on 49 when Milnes nicked off against the second new ball to be caught at first slip against Ball, who finished with two for 59. Fletcher also bagged a brace, but Pattinson was clearly the classiest act on the field in claiming 6 for 73.

Rodgers and Celtic in Old Firm battle for "special" Joe Gelhardt – report

At the end of last month, when it became clear that Wolves striker Fabio Silva was available on loan, Scottish Premiership contenders Celtic and Rangers battled it out for the signing. While it's the Hoops who are top of the table of the moment, the Gers prevailed in this particular scrap, securing the services of Silva on loan until the end of the season.

However, attention at Parkhead now seems to have turned to another young striker, this time 21-year-old Leeds ace Joe Gelhardt. Gelhardt joined Leeds from Wigan in 2020, and spent the second half of last season on loan in the Championship with Sunderland.

He's only made six second-tier appearances for the relegated Whites this season, with just two coming from the start. Partly due to injury, he's been limited to a solitary league outing for Daniel Farke's side since mid-September.

Celtic and Rangers fight for Gelhardt

Now, a report from The Daily Mail's Simon Jones reveals that Celtic and Rangers are showing "interest" in Gelhardt, potentially setting up a repeat of their Silva duel. It's unclear in the story whether the two clubs are eyeing a loan deal or a permanent move, but it should be noted either way that Gelhardt is under contract at Elland Road until the summer of 2027.

Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt.

Leeds have previously told Gelhardt that he'll be staying put, with Farke unwilling to sanction even a temporary exit, but it remains to be seen whether that stance changes. Logic dictates that a young player struggling for minutes would benefit from regular first-team action elsewhere.

Gelhardt can strike fear into SPL defences

Former Leeds player Noel Whelan says Gelhardt possesses "something special" and "scares defenders", and he's been showing that since his days in the youth ranks. The Englishman bagged in 18 goals in 27 appearances at Premier League 2 level before graduating to senior football.

While he inevitably hasn't been quite as explosive in the men's game just yet, his numbers are still respectable. Last season, for instance, he provided six direct goal contributions in 18 league appearances for Sunderland, an average of one every 202 minutes, even though he was playing through injury, according to director Kristjaan Speakman.

In 2021/22, his last full season playing in the Premier League, he scored twice and set-up four more at an even better rate of a goal or assist every 122 minutes. This suggests he's a player who can come up with big moments over the course of the season even when he's occupying a reserve role.

At first, he'd be best suited to serving as an understudy for Kyogo Furuhashi, who's Brendan Rodgers' joint-top scorer right now with 10 goals, but maybe if he impressed in a loan spell, Celtic could think about trying to sign permanently and extract the full potential of a player who's previously been called up to England's under-21 side.

Still, they mustn't get ahead of themselves. The first job is to convince Leeds to make him available, and the second is to persuade him to pick green and white over blue.

What earned Matt Kelly IPL attention?

The Perth Scorchers and Western Australia fast bowler is inexperienced at the professional level, but has already been tipped to play for international honours

Andrew McGlashan12-Apr-2019How has he got his IPL gig?Through impressive performances in the recent Big Bash League for Perth Scorchers, where his skills at the death, particularly his yorker, stood out. Although the Scorchers had a miserable season, Kelly impressed in the seven matches he played taking 11 wickets with an economy rate of 7.74. There is a Western Australia/Scorchers link to Knight Riders as well, with Simon Katich being the assistant coach of the IPL franchise, which could well have helped the move.”I think with the budget we had and the kind of options we had, we felt Matt Kelly fit the bill,” Knight Riders mentor Abhishek Nayar said. “He hits hard lengths, has bowled very well in the BBL in death overs. He also contributes with the bat. So we felt like when we invested in someone like Harry Gurney it was more about seeing the kind of skills he has that adds to the team, which is one of the reasons why we shortlisted Matt Kelly.”Yorkers, you say…Yes, indeed, that skill that has taken a bit of a back seat in recent years with bowlers trying a whole host of variations to try and overcome batsmen who are ever-more innovative with scoops and flicks. It remains a fact, though, that a good yorker (and they aren’t easy to deliver on cue) remains very difficult to score off despite all the shots batsmen have these days. Kelly’s ability caught the eye of someone who used to be world-class at delivering them…

Never mind the IPL, how about Australia selection?Australia are pretty well-stocked with quality quicks across all formats at the moment, but Kelly will certainly be one to keep an eye on with a view to the 2020 T20 World Cup and beyond. Mark Waugh, the former Australia selector, suggested Kelly could be a late inclusion for this year’s World Cup in England if any one of the first-choice picks are injured, even though he’s only played five List A matches.”One thing we do lack slightly is a really good death bowler – a guy who can bowl yorkers at the end of the innings and he’s really good at that,” Waugh told . “He played for the Scorchers and WA. He’s a bit of a smoky but I’d have him the mix.”

Will he get into the Knight Riders XI?Tough to say at the moment. Knight Riders are second on the table, so are going quite nicely although they were heavily beaten by Chennai Super Kings in their last match. That loss, however, was a failure of the batting unit, which could only make 108 for 9. Their four overseas players in that game were fellow Australian Chris Lynn, Sunil Narine, Andre Russell and Gurney. Russell is enjoying the form of his life, Narine is a key allrounder and Lynn wouldn’t be a like-for-like role so it could come down to him playing off for a spot with Gurney. What about the other formats? As mentioned, he only has five one-day matches under his belt but his early numbers are good, with nine wickets at 22.77 and an economy rate of 4.69. It’s not just white-ball, either, where he has shown plenty of promise. He was Western Australia’s leading wicket-taker in the Sheffield Shield with 30 wickets at 28.53 including a career-best 6 for 67 against South Australia. He certainly has a chance of featuring in the Australia A squads for the tour of England, which will be named next week.
