Man Utd could sign "sublime" Malacia replacement this January

The same problems witnessed during the opening weekend against Wolves are still occurring to this day, resulting in the Manchester United faithful becoming infuriated.

Erik ten Hag’s side are eighth in the Premier League after 20 matches, scoring an abysmal 20 goals and losing nine matches.

With that in mind, the boss will look to reinforce his squad this January in an attempt to save the season and his future at the helm of the Red Devils.

Man United transfers latest – Miguel Gutierrez

According to the Sun, Man United are keeping an eye on Miguel Gutierrez. United scouts have been sent to watch the Girona star over the last few weeks, who is valued at £17m.

It's said they are now closely tracking the player, however, a move this January is unlikely unless outgoings occur at Old Trafford.

Miguel Gutierrez’s style of play

Tyrell Malacia is a name that Man United fans won’t have heard of in a while, with an unknown injury picked up in the summer keeping him out of action for 179 days.

The Netherlands international has yet to feature for United this season, and with Sergio Reguilon returning to his parent club, Spurs, the left-back position is rather weak.

Manchester United's loan defender Sergio Reguilon.

As a result, the acquisition of Gutierrez could well send the young full-back packing. After all, he has been “sublime” – as was previously noted by sports commentator Javier Balboa in Spain. The left-back is currently thriving in an exciting Girona side that is currently second in La Liga and has only lost once in 19 matches.

The 22-year-old has started all but one game this season, registering a goal and an assist in the process.

The table below shows Gutierrez’s statistics from the last 365 days across the top European leagues and how he subsequently ranks compared to his positional peers.

On the evidence of the above, the Real Madrid youth product is clearly extremely comfortable in possession, and he rarely gives the ball away cheaply, allowing his side to maintain control.

The Spaniard is an intelligent footballer who also has the ability to invert when on the ball to help in the buildup phase of play, which United particularly struggle with.

Importantly, the Girona full-back has a vast, accurate passing range, which allows his side to spring into attack quickly. This is shown by the pass completion percentages and also by the fact that he forces the play into the penalty area when the opportunity arises.

The 5 foot 11 sensation has been described as a “weapon” from defence by scout, Antonio Mango, referring to him creating the third-most big chances in the Girona squad this season.

Girona defenderMiguel Gutierrez.

The left-footed ace has quick feet and can skip past an opponent, making him press-resistant, which allows him to wriggle out of tight spaces. Gutierrez is an aggressive defender who likes to get tight to the winger and take a proactive approach to defending. This is displayed by his ball recoveries statistic, but his biggest strength by far is his in-possession class.

Gutierrez is already showing signs of being an excellent full-back, but he also has the potential to become elite. If he did sign for the Red Devils, it is reasonable to presume he wouldn’t be a guaranteed starter, especially when Luke Shaw is available, but he would be a fantastic backup. The Spaniard has aspects of his game that he must improve, but his quality is undeniable.

Journalist drops claim as Liverpool named in Joao Palhinha transfer race

Liverpool have their eyes on an "amazing" defensive midfielder who could be a difference-maker in the Premier League title race, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Liverpool linked with Andre Trindade

Much was made of the Reds' struggles in midfield throughout last season, with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson a far cry from the players they used to be when they sealed title glory in 2019/20. It was clear that major surgery was needed in the middle of the park, so Jurgen Klopp focused exclusively on that area, offloading dead wood and bringing in four new signings.

The difference has been immeasurable to date, with Dominik Szoboszlai the star addition to date, but Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo all providing more energy.

There have been calls from some supporters to sign a proper No.6 like Fabinho at his peak, though, with Mac Allister largely doing well in the deep-lying role, but naturally more of a No.8. Fluminense ace Andre has been talked about as an option for the Reds, but those rumours do appear to have quietened of late.

Liverpool have their eyes on Joao Palhinha

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones said Liverpool are interested in signing Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, claiming it could help turn them into Premier League champions:

Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha.

"I'm surprised Liverpool haven't already made their move on Palhinha if they were going to do it. They've had their eye on him for the past year and it seems very clear to me that Palhinha is a player that they could do with.

"If Palhinha was playing number six for Liverpool, I think that they would have a much better chance of going on to win the league this season than they would without him. Certainly when you see Alexis Mac Allister having to play that role. There doesn't seem to be a defined person right now at Liverpool who can play that role."

There is no doubt that Palhinha is an impressive midfielder who can be so dominant in the middle of the park, standing out so often in a Fulham shirt. In fact, no Premier League player has made more tackles so far this season than Palhinha, and exactly the same applied last term, when his tally of 147 was 47 more than second-place Moises Caicedo (100). His teammate Alexsandar Mitrovic is a huge admirer, too, saying of him in the past:

"I think this year there’s been some sensational [signings] that we have made. For me personally, [Joao] Palhinha is the signing of the season so far, amazing, amazing [player]."

That being said, Palhinha is now 28 years of age, so he could drift past his peak relatively soon after joining Liverpool, and the money that Fulham will demand could make it a risk.

Klopp isn't one to sign players of this ilk, especially midway through the season, so it feels far more likely that he will end up sticking with the midfielders already in his squad, hoping they can do enough to get over the finish line in the title race.

Arsenal’s "woeful" £280k-p/w flop must be banished from the XI vs Newcastle

Arsenal are back in action in the Premier League this evening, as the Gunners face a trip to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United on match day 11 of the 2023/24 campaign.

Mikel Arteta’s side will be desperate to get back to winning ways in the North East, after suffering a disastrous defeat to West Ham United midweek in the Carabao Cup.

Tonight’s opponents will be far from easy to overcome, as Eddie Howe’s squad are unbeaten in their previous six in the Premier League.

Arsenal team news vs Newcastle United

Despite collecting only their second defeat of the 2023/24 campaign on Wednesday, Arsenal will remain full of confidence on their return to league football, as the Gunners remain unbeaten from their opening 10 games.

Rotation and an overridingly poor performance ultimately dealt Arsenal their premature Carabao Cup exit, with the issue of squad depth still not solved despite Arteta and Edu’s efforts in the summer transfer window.

Adding to the strain of selection, the manager confirmed last week that both Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey will be absent for ‘a few weeks’ due to injury, while Emile Smith-Rowe has also been ruled out for a similar time frame.

The Englishman’s latest blow has left the north Londoners two players short in midfield, with some worry also surrounding captain Martin Odegaard, who will be assessed in training before the Newcastle challenge.

To add to the midfield that is stretched for personnel, there have been some far-from-adequate performers on show this season, with one name calling to be dropped from the XI after his display against the Hammers.

The stats that show that Kai Havertz should be dropped against Newcastle

Kai Havertz has had a far from easy start to life at Arsenal, as he continues to struggle for form and make an impact on Arteta’s side enough to see him granted consistent game time.

From playing in midfield to a more advanced position, the German is yet to find his best role in north London, with patience beginning to run thin as his performances fail to progress.

Former professional Curtis Shaw described the former Chelsea flop as “woeful” earlier in the season, following up on his criticism of the 24-year-old after his performance on Wednesday evening saying he’s “not good enough” in Arsenal’s current squad.

Against the Hammers, Havertz failed to make an impact or to impose himself in a highly-contested midfield, as he was dribbled past twice, lost possession seven times, and won just two of his six aerial duels, via Sofascore.

The 6 foot 4 Germany international must be dropped ahead of the trip to St James’, with Howe’s side boasting a high-energy and combative midfield, an environment that the £280k-per-week dud may crumble in.

kai-havertz-arsenal-transfer-edu-arteta-leandro-trossard-international

In terms of options to replace him, Fabio Vieira and Jorginho are the most likely candidates available to partner Declan Rice, with both players also dropping poor displays in midweek to add to Arteta’s selection worries.

To continue their impeccable form in the Premier League, the Gunners must look to find a long-term solution to cover for Partey in the middle of the park, with Havertz far from being up to the task as of yet.

Therefore, Arteta must banish the disappointing ex-Chelsea flop from the starting XI in order to stand a chance against Newcastle's high-tempo outfit.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

He is now 39 years of age, but is showing no sign of slowing down – with 42 goals to his name this season. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has, however, been subjected to “Messi” chants from rival supporters on a regular basis – leading to him serving a ban at one stage after delivering a crude response to his detractors.

Ronaldo’s contract is due to run until the summer of 2025, with Saudi football expert Ben Jacobs expecting that deal to be honoured despite obvious frustration on the part of CR7.

    WHAT EXPERT SAID ABOUT RONALDO

Jacobs has told : “I think he’ll do another season. I think Ronaldo still feels that he’s the one capitalising this. So there’s a personal aspect that feeds into maybe his ego that he started all of this. By the same token he’s frustrated. Al Nassr are second, they're out of the Saudi Super Cup, he got sent off late in a game against Al Hilal. And every time he does anything wrong, opposition fans are chanting the name ‘Leo Messi’. And that juxtaposition of Messi winning the World cup, Ronaldo being in Saudi Arabia, I think is really irking him. I expect him to do one more season, but quite clearly there's aspects out there now that are irritating Ronaldo. Particularly, and oddly at this stage of his career, when people are chanting the name Lionel Messi at him.”

The 23-year old Shreyas Iyer has been appointed vice-captain and will also be vying for a place in the Indian one-day side. Batsman Prithvi Shaw, who earned his maiden Test call-up for the fourth and final Tests, has also been included. In the recently concluded five-match Test series in England, Rahane scored 257 runs in ten innings at an average of 25.70. His two half-centuries came in the Nottingham and Southampton Test where he scored a first-innings 81 and a second-innings 51 respectively. In December 2017, Rahane had been unavailable to play for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy knockouts due to national duties for the ODI side during the South Africa tour.Mumbai squad: Ajinkay Rahane (captain), Shreyas Iyer (vice-capt), Prithvi Shaw, Jay Bista, Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dubey, Siddhesh Lad, Aditya Tare, Eknath Kerkar, Akash Parkar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Shams Mulani, Vijay Gohil, Tushar Deshpande, Roston Dias.

Unpaid Kalabagan players meet BCB CEO

This is not the first recent instance of Dhaka Premier League players turning to the board to resolve pay disputes with their clubs

Mohammad Isam13-May-2018

Kalabagan Krira Chakra’s players have met the BCB chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury, informing him that they are yet to be paid their dues for playing in this season’s Dhaka Premier League.Following the pre-season players’ draft, the BCB had instructed the clubs to pay the players 25% of their fees before the start of the league, 25% at the end of the league’s first phase, and the remaining 50% six weeks after the end of the Super League. By this time, the players should have been paid their dues in full.Tasamul Haque, who played for Kalabagan in the recently concluded 2017-18 season, said the players were forced to inform the BCB since their club had made it clear it wouldn’t be paying the squad their dues.”Some days back we had written to the BCB who had informed the club,” Tasamul said. “They also replied to the board, based on which the board will now sit with the club, but we are unaware of any decisions. They cannot withhold our payment. We have informed the BCB that we want the remaining 50%. The club has told us that after we give our complaint in writing, only the board can pay us. Not the club.”Chowdhury said the BCB would engage in talks with the Kalabagan club officials to resolve the pay dispute. “Players are important to us while clubs are also stakeholders,” he said. “We will try to end the dispute with the concerned club as soon as possible.”The complaint has come up because the club didn’t pay in the stipulated time. We will talk to the club officials directly, and try to solve it.”This is not the first time DPL players have had to rely on the BCB to get their full payment. BCB had to pay Kalabagan and Cricket Coaching School players in 2016 while Victoria Sporting Club also refused to pay their players in the same year. The link between the two years is the players-by-choice draft system, by which the clubs have to adhere to board instructions in paying players in installments. In the open-market transfer system, the players and the club go into a verbal (and sometimes written) agreement in which case most players are paid at least 80% of their fee in advance.Clubs have successfully arm-twisted the BCB into using the players-by-choice system three times now, mainly because of players’ rising payment demands. Under the players-by-choice system, clubs can be less punctual with payments in the knowledge that the players are tied to playing for them, and cannot negotiate with other clubs. The system restricts players into categories, with most taking a pay cut.Nadif Chowdhury, the Victoria captain in 2016, had said at the time that the player drafts didn’t allow instant payment to the players.”The conventional players’ transfer system was much better,” Nadif said. “Under that system, we got a large chunk of the agreed amount before the league started. Sometimes we got around 80-90%. Now we are hardly even getting half of that amount. We are sad that nobody is following the instruction given by the board.”
