California Steel gives Durham unrivalled strength

Durham’s bowlers drove home the advantage after they had made their highest score against Leicestershire since becoming a first-class county. The foundation of Durham’s imposing 525 for 8 declared was Cameron Steel’s 224, the 21-year-old becoming the youngest double centurion in Durham’s history. The California-born Steel, who began the day on 145, reached his 200 off 384 balls, hitting 24 boundaries in the process, before being caught at backward point as the visitors looked to accelerate past 500.Leicestershire’s teenage seamer Matthew Potts then picked up two wickets as the Foxes lost four in the final session of day two of the Division Two match at Grace Road. The 18-year-old from Sunderland trapped Colin Ackermann leg before with a delivery that stayed low before producing a lifter that Harry Dearden could only edge to third slip, where Tom Latham took a sharp catch in front of his face.Chris Rushworth made the first breakthrough, knocking Paul Horton’s middle stump out of the ground when the experienced opener had reached 38, and had added 62 with Dearden when Leicestershire began their reply.Aadil Ali was the last wicket to fall – caught behind off Paul Coughlin – as Leicestershire closed on 124 for four, some 401 runs behind.Having been dropped twice the previous day, by Dearden at second slip on 50 and Ali at backward point on 129, Steel was fortunate again on 165 when Ajmal Shahzad found the edge of his bat with a full delivery, only for Horton to put down a chest-high chance at first slip. The next ball from Shahzad, a half-volley, was driven for four, and the following delivery from the same bowler, a long-hop, pulled to midwicket for another boundary, a sequence summing up the inconsistency of a Foxes attack missing five senior seamers.Having failed to take a wicket throughout the first two sessions of the first day, Leicestershire made it three sessions out of four as Michael Richardson and Steel extended their unbroken fifth-wicket partnership to 147 at lunch. The afternoon session, however, saw a clatter of wickets as Durham began to throw the bat.One of which was that of Steel, one of four victims for Neil Dexter, the veteran all-rounder marking his return from injury by finishing with 5 for71, by some margin his best bowling of a much-disrupted season. He also picked up the wickets of Ryan Pringle, Richardson and Potts as Leicestershire finally found some joy.

Cricket Australia’s team performance executive, Pat Howard, will remain in his position until 2019 after being handed a two-year contract extension. Howard’s contract as executive general manager, team performance, was due to expire at the end of June, but he has agreed to stay on further.Howard was originally appointed to the newly-created role in 2011, following the Argus review, and has been a pivotal figure in the direction of Australian cricket during the past six years. Although Howard has been retained, CA has lost several key figures in the past year, including former commercial boss Mike McKenna, and most recently head of operations, Sean Cary.”Pat is a dynamic, passionate executive and the board and I are delighted that he has agreed to extend his term,” James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia CEO, said. “He has led the evolution of a new team performance structure and success-driven culture for both men’s and women’s cricket in Australia and we see his ongoing contribution as integral to our future plans.”Among many other things, Pat has driven the improvement of structures and systems that support the Australian Cricket Pathway for all young players, with a firm eye on identifying and nurturing talent at an early stage and enabling them with the best opportunities to perform at the highest possible level.”A former professional rugby player, Howard has been at the helm of Australia’s performance through significant ups and downs, with highs including the 2013-14 Ashes clean sweep, the 2015 World Cup triumph at home, and a return to No.1 in the Test rankings last year. Continued struggles in the subcontinent have remained an issue, although Australia’s recent competitive performance in India was encouraging.”In sport there is always highs and lows but if I was to reflect, I am particularly pleased with how much our pathways and talent identification systems have grown, with more than 300 contracted male and female players, as well as the coaching pathway for coaches in Australian cricket,” Howard said. “The cricket landscape is changing rapidly and the need to continue to adapt will be important, this means there is still a lot to achieve.”What the previous 12 months has shown is that we have a lot of talent and depth in the system to be ready for these changes. The goal hasn’t changed, we want to be number one in all three formats across men’s and women’s cricket.”

Man United Expected To Bid For £52m Star Soon

Manchester United are expected to make a bid for Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana, but it could be postponed until next week, according to reports from Italy.

Has David de Gea left Man United?

De Gea's contract with Man United expired on 30th June, and Football Insider reports that the 32-year-old is set to walk away from the club as he has little desire to play second fiddle to a new arrival, with Erik ten Hag identifying multiple targets.

Big names such as Diogo Costa and Thibaut Courtois have been linked in the past, while the lesser-known Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow has also emerged as an option, with reports indicating he could be brought in alongside Onana.

Fabrizio Romano reports the Red Devils have already held a meeting with the Inter goalkeeper's agent ahead of a potential summer move, though there may be a short delay before an official bid is lodged if the latest update is to be believed.

According to reports from Italy (via Sport Witness), Inter are waiting for Man United to make their official bid for the Cameroon international, but there is a belief that it could be some time before it arrives.

The Serie A club have made it very clear they must receive €60m (£52m) if they are to sell their goalkeeper, but that figure is difficult for United to reach straight away.

Ten Hag has been "promised" that the 27-year-old will be brought in this summer, and there is a willingness to get the deal done.

Are Man United signing Andre Onana?

Man United have recently received a boost in their pursuit of the Cameroonian, as Fabrizio Romano has reported he is "open" to a move to Old Trafford this summer, and he could be a real upgrade on De Gea.

Ten Hag's current goalkeeper has often struggled with the ball at his feet, ranking in just the 30th percentile for average touches per 90 in the past year, while Onana places in the 89th percentile.

Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.

In stark contrast to De Gea, the former Ajax man is "remarkable with the ball", and is "equally comfortable using the ball with his right foot or his left foot" according to Eurosport's Alessandro Brunetti.

Hailed as a "superstar" by members of the media, Onana is exactly the sort of modern-day goalkeeper that could help take Man United to the next level, and they should come to the table with an opening offer next week.

West Ham United Eyeing Swoop For "Special" £22.5k-p/w Ace

West Ham United are plotting a swoop to bring Norwich City defender Max Aarons to the Premier League, according to reports.

Is Max Aarons leaving Norwich?

The Canaries right-back’s contract isn’t set to expire until the end of next season, but after personally confirming that he will be departing during the ongoing window, clubs will have been alerted to his availability ahead of the new term.

During his 44 Championship starts last season, Carrow Road’s academy graduate established himself as David Wagner’s both third defensive and offensive best-performing player, so he may not be short of potential suitors, and it’s not the first time that he’s been linked with a move to the London Stadium.

Back in 2021, The Independent’s Nick Mashiter first credited David Moyes with an interest in the 23-year-old, and whilst a deal at the time obviously failed to materialise, it sounds like the boss is preparing to take a second bite of the cherry when it comes to securing his target.

Are West Ham signing Aarons?

According to talkSPORT, West Ham are “set to make a move” for Aarons this summer having been made aware that he is leaving his boyhood club.

The Irons’ interest from two years ago is backed up by the report and it’s believed that Norwich’s defender also “attracted interest” from Barcelona back in the day, and should he put pen to paper, he would “boost” the boss’ options at right-back alongside Vladimir Coufal and Ben Johnson.

Norwich City defender Max Aarons.

Could Aarons be a good addition for Moyes?

West Ham are likely to have a healthy budget to recruit the players that they want should Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal go through and Aarons has clearly been a long-term target for Moyes which is understandable to see why considering the positive impact he has at both ends of the pitch.

Norwich’s “special” right-back, as lauded by their former manager Daniel Farke, made a total of 84 tackles last season which was more than any other member of his squad, via FBRef, alongside averaging 1.4 clearances per second-tier game, but he was also a threat going forward.

Sponsored by Adidas, the £22.5k-per-week earner ranked in the 99th percentile for progressive carries so loves to take on his marker and when having made it to the opposition’s box, whipped 102 crosses into the area which was the second-highest number in the east of England, so he would be a fantastic acquisition should the boss successfully be able to convince him to join.

Newcastle Could Sign Their Own Saka In £51m ‘Wizard’

Newcastle United are believed to be chasing Juventus winger Federico Chiesa after qualifying for the Champions League and now boasting an allure to rival any on the European stage.

What's the latest on Federico Chiesa to Newcastle?

That's according to Italian newspaper Tuttosport (via Sport Witness), revealing that Aston Villa have now joined the race for the Italy international, who has spent the 22/23 campaign reintegrating into competitive action following a long-term injury.

The report continues to state that the interest of Magpies' sporting director Dan Ashworth for the winger dates prior to that of AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali, who is expected to join the ranks at St. James's Park on a €70m (£60m) deal, as per Fabrizio Romano.

While a variety of valuations have entered circulation for the touted star, the Old Lady are believed to have transfer-listed the 25-year-old for €60m (£51m) after financial difficulties resulting in a detrimental ten-point deduction have left the Serie A side scrambling to recuperate what they can.

How good is Federico Chiesa?

Before suffering a horrendous ACL injury in January 2022, Chiesa was riding the crest of a wave and had been instrumental in his nation's triumph in the European Championships the previous summer, earning an average Sofascore rating of 7.05 after scoring two goals, completing 80% of his passes and averaging 2.4 shots per match.

An "exciting" footballer, as per Dean Jones, he has also scored 18 goals and supplied 14 assists across the season-and-a-half before the bitter setback, and while the 41-cap gem has impressed in the closing weeks of the recently-concluded term – registering four direct contributions from his final five league matches – he will be desperate to rekindle his former free-flowing form.

And he could do just that on Tyneside, slotting into a thriving outfit that can offer the Champions League football that has been taken from chastened Juve, and perhaps offer a clean slate from which he can return to prominence on the right flank of Eddie Howe's system.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

A veritable "wizard", as the £153k-per-week ace has been called by Liverpool insider DaveOCKOP, Chiesa could be Howe's answer to Bukayo Saka, with the Arsenal prodigy's performances over the duration of the 22/23 Premier League season a defining factor behind Arsenal's – ultimately unsuccessful, albeit impressive – title challenge against Manchester City.

Saka, who has been dubbed "the best right winger in the world" by GOAL correspondent Charles Watts, scored 14 goals and laid off 11 assists in the Premier League last season, having also scored seven goals for England since last summer.

The discussed pair are listed as comparable players via FBref. Chiesa ranks among the top 4% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 15% for progressive carries, the top 16% for successful take-ons and the top 13% for tackles per 90.

Saka, comparatively, ranks among the top 21% for goals, the top 23% for assists, the top 10% for progressive carries, the top 5% for touches in the attacking box and the top 28% for tackles per 90.

It paints the picture that while both are supremely creative and expert ball carriers, they aren't afraid of the dirty work either, tracking back to help out their defensive colleagues.

With Chiesa still not back at the peak of his powers, it's a daunting prospect for opposition to imagine just how "potent" – as stated by Rio Ferdinand – he could yet become, and at Newcastle, he could rise to the fore and rival any positional peer on English shores with the calibre of his performances.

Tottenham: Ange Hold Spurs Talks For "Magnificent" Star

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has personally held talks with the representatives of Leicester City star James Maddison, according to reports.

Who will Spurs sign this summer?

Maddison is being pushed as a top target for Spurs by sections of the press with some sources even suggesting that the 26-year-old was at the centre of a double bid last week.

The Lilywhites were said to have lodged an offer for both Maddison and his teammate, Harvey Barnes, worth in excess of £50 million which was swiftly rejected by Leicester.

Sky Sports rebuffed this claim, stating while Spurs had a serious interest in both, no formal proposal of any kind had gone in for the duo.

As well as the Foxes playmaker, it is believed that Tottenham are targeting a new goalkeeper, central defender and possible forward additions.

David Raya of Brentford is wanted to replace Hugo Lloris, meanwhile the likes of Man City defender Aymeric Laporte have been tipped with potential moves to Spurs.

Galasary forward Nicolo Zaniolo has emerged as a target in recent days, too, with Postecoglou seemingly looking to strengthen in various areas of the pitch.

Going back to Maddison, a report by Football Transfers has shared some interesting news on Tottenham's chase for the England international.

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.

According to their information, Postecoglou has personally held talks with Maddison's agents recently, and he is thought to have made a really good impression on them,

This has apparently helped to sway Maddison more towards Tottenham than Premier League rivals Newcastle, and the former Norwich City star may be tempted to join.

Despite this, Maddison is yet to have any personal contact with Spurs, but Postecoglou coming across well to the player's camp could be crucial.

How many goals did Maddison score last season?

Maddison starred for Leicester over the course of 2022/2023, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists in the league alone, totalling an impressive 19 attacking contributions (WhoScored).

The Three Lions ace also attempted more shots at goal per 90, completing more key passes and registered their joint-highest rate of successful take-ons in the top flight (WhoScored).

These numbers make one thing crystal clear – he is far too good for the Championship.

Whether it is Newcastle or Spurs, either side may be on to seal a very potent and capable attacking threat in the final third.

Former West Ham and Leicester City star David Connolly has also called Maddison "absolutely magnificent" for his form at the King Power.

Aston Villa One Of The Front-Runners To Sign £48k-A-Week Ace

Aston Villa are one of the two favourites to sign Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh claim.

Is Torres leaving Villarreal this summer?

The Spaniard has arguably been one of the standout players in his position in La Liga in recent years, also becoming a regular for Spain at international level.

Torres started 34 of his side's league games in 2022/23, averaging 4.1 clearances per game and enjoying an 85.3% pass completion rate, too. The £48,000-a-week defender could well be on the move this summer, however, as he looks for a new challenge while in the peak years of his career.

Villa are one of the clubs who have been constantly linked with a move for the 26-year-old, with Unai Emery knowing him well from his time as Villarreal manager. He clearly sees him as someone who could help take his team up another gear next season, as they enjoy European football and look to finish even higher in the Premier League.

The rumour is continuing to bubble under the surface as we approach the official opening of the transfer window, with a new update suggesting that Emery's men still remain in with a chance of signing Torres in the summer.

pau-torres-villarreal-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

Are Villa in the mix to sign Torres?

According to El Periodico Mediterraneo [via Sport Witness], Villa and Juventus are the front-runners to sign Torres before the start of next season, although the player himself would prefer to join the Serie A giants, given their reputation as one of Europe's biggest clubs.

On the plus side, the report claims that the Villans are able to offer the central defender a deal that is "unattainable for almost any of La Liga’s sides", given the financial power they now possess. The fact that his current deal expires next summer means that Villarreal could be forced to sell, rather than lose him for free in 2024.

Torres could be the ideal centre-back signing for Villa, should Emery manage to work his magic and entice him to the club. He is a 23-cap Spain international, which is no mean feat considering some of the colleagues he has been up against over the years, from Gerard Pique to Sergio Ramos, and he has been hailed as a "fabulous" player who is "great in possession" by Owen Hargreaves.

He would prove to be an upgrade on Villa's current options, such is his pedigree – he won the Europa League under Emery in 2021 – and his signing would also be a major statement of intent if they were to beat Juve to his signature.

Arsenal Could Sign Their Own Harry Kane In £97m Monster

Arsenal are reportedly ready to look for reinforcements in the summer transfer window, as the successful 2022/23 campaign comes to an end.

The Gunners have three games remaining, and are still in with a chance of winning the Premier League title, should Manchester City make mistakes in their remaining fixtures.

It’s been a season to remember whether Mikel Arteta’s side clinch the title or not, with the Spaniard leading his side to their first top-two finish since 2015/16.

Next season will mark Arsenal’s first time back in the Champions League in six years, so as expected, ventures into the transfer market ahead of the summer window have already begun.

The Gunners have been shy of a goalscorer since the departure of Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang in 2022, and despite the arrival of Gabriel Jesus, Arteta’s side must find the missing piece in the form of a deadly marksman in the summer if they are to challenge Europe’s elite.

The north Londoners have been linked with a natural goalscorer in Serie A, who favours a move to the Premier League.

What’s the latest on Dusan Vlahovic to Arsenal?

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic could be on the move this summer, with his representatives exploring options for a Premier League move, as understood by 90min.

It’s reported that the forward is expected to leave Turin after joining last summer, where he then received interest from Arsenal before signing for Juve from Fiorentina.

The Gunners look to be back amongst those on the list interested in the £96m-rated Serbian, as the club have kept “tabs on his situation” and wish to strengthen with “a number nine” ahead of next season – as per transfer expert Pete O’Rourke.

What can Vlahovic bring to Arsenal?

The powerful Serbia international has scored 94 goals in 216 career appearances at just 23 years old, proving his prolific nature in front of goal.

In his final season at Fiorentina – the year that first sparked Arsenal’s interest – the 6 foot 3 striker was one of the most prolific in Europe.

Dusan Vlahovic in action for Juventus.

Described by former Juve midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi as a "monster", the young forward remarkably averaged more non-penalty goals per 90 than Harry Kane, with 0.58 per game compared to the Englishman’s 0.36 that season.

Indeed, Vlahovic could well be Arsenal’s own Harry Kane should he make the switch in the summer, averaging close to the Tottenham forward in a number of attributes, and matching him this season for non-penalty expected goals per 90 minutes with 0.42 xG – as per FBref.

Although the Serb doesn't possess the same sort of creativity, the bullish forward plays in a very similar way to the Spurs man as he was breaking through, with the BBC's Raj Chohan previously commenting: "Vlahović is like the 2016-2018 era of Kane under Poch before he then started to drop and become a playmaker. He would clean up in a system that creates more chances."

The goal-scoring prowess of the Juve star is certainly something Arteta is in need of to take his side from title challengers to a team ready to compete in Europe, with the majority of his side’s goals coming from midfield rather than the number nine role.

Only time will tell if Arsenal can get their man, but if the move was to be successful, the Gunners could have a match-changing talent in the Kane mould in their ranks.
