Tom Westley targets England Test return as long build-up to Ashes begins

Essex batsman set to play for MCC in Abu Dhabi curtain-raiser, knowing it’s all up for grabs this summer

Andrew Miller15-Mar-2019It’s all up for grabs at the top of England’s Test batting order. Yet another series has come and gone – this time a 2-1 defeat in the Caribbean – with none of the incumbents making a definitive case for retention going into this summer’s Ashes.Tom Westley knows that feeling well. It’s been nigh on two years since Westley made the last of his five Test appearances in the summer of 2017. In nine innings against against South Africa and West Indies, he managed a solitary half-century at an average of 24.12 before being dropped for that winter’s Ashes campaign. But, having this week celebrated his 30th birthday on Essex’s pre-season tour of Abu Dhabi, Westley has not given up hope of earning himself a second chance at Test level – especially with nearly four months of county cricket in which to hone his form before England’s next Test engagement, against Ireland on July 24.”It’s quite exciting, not only for myself but a lot of county cricketers,” Westley told ESPNcricinfo. “If an individual scores three, four, five hundreds early in the season, they are going to be spoken about to play for England. That’s everyone’s goal, and my goal personally is to play for England again, but the only way to do that is to score those runs.”Two years older and wiser, Westley has vowed that – whatever comes to pass – he will be truer to his own game this season than he was when he last got his opportunity with England.”I just really regret not scoring more runs,” he said. “There are a few technical things that I thought they would make me a better player. I changed my stance a little bit; I thought would help my balance. I changed my back-lift. Not huge changes, but things that I felt were important in order for me to be more successful at international level.”Actually, in hindsight, I should have worked on what I was good at, and increased the intensity and the preparation around that, to elevate the player that I was by 10 percent, rather than try and be someone that you’re not.”You end up taking two or three steps back and only one step forward, rather than actually going through the difficulty of working on what you’ve already got and improving that to take the step forward.”One obvious strength of Westley’s going into his Test debut was the quality of his leg-side play, but in attempting to make himself a more rounded off-side player, he recognises that he perhaps blunted some of his effectiveness.”It was actually explained to me quite nicely by Paul Farbrace,” he said, “whether you are playing at club level or first-class cricket, you are the same player, but you try and improve by 5 or 10 percent because the standard increases, and it was quite refreshing to view it like that.”At the end of the day, you don’t really need to have every shot in the book. I mean, look at players like Jonathan Trott, a verystrong leg-side player, KP, Mark Waugh. Pietersen was not a big cutter of the ball, nor is Trott, but they have strengths in other areas and their strengths were good enough at international level to be successful. I think it’s more having that sort of mind-set and honing those skills in order to succeed.”Tom Westley helped England towards their target•Getty ImagesTalking of mind-set, Essex are set to benefit from the long-term return of one of the toughest players of his generation, with the newly-knighted Sir Alastair Cook set to play the entire first-class season for the club following his retirement from international cricket.”He’s hardly spoken about it!,” Westley joked about Cook’s encounter with the Queen last month. “It’s an honour for him to be knighted, but it’s an honour for us to have him back here full time now, because his impact on the squad goes a long way. He’s an England and Essex legend, so adding someone like that to the squad; it’s always going to help.”Having won the league in 2017, he was a huge part of that; his runs in the early part of the season really set us up. So hopefully he can continue where he left off for England and score bucket-loads of runs for the county.”Would Westley himself be picking Cook’s brains in his bid to regain England recognition?”I’ve been asked that a lot in recent seasons,” Westley said. “He can’t score runs for you and he even said that to me. We sat down before I made my debut and I asked him if he had any bits of advice. He said ‘not really, you’ve got to where you’ve got to because you are good enough, you’ve scored the runs to be here but only you can go out and score runs now for yourself’.””It’s so true because if you strive for bits of secret information – what’s the elixir? The answer? – you’ll never find it. The only way you’re going to achieve that is scoring runs consistently. He’s banged on about that for a long time can’t see anything changing. I’d be disappointed if he now says learn a new shot.”Westley will get his first crack at scoring those vital first-class runs in Abu Dhabi at the end of the month, when he plays for MCC against the Champion County, Surrey, in the season’s curtain-raiser, alongside his fellow Essex players Dan Lawrence and Sam Cook. The conditions may be somewhat different to what will be awaiting back home at Chelmsford, but the opponents are very familiar – given that Westley made a century against Surrey at The Oval in the final match of last season, to set up what turned out to be an incredible one-wicket victory, as Surrey battled back from being bowled out for 67 in the first innings to take the game right to the wire.”They were the team to beat last year and we managed to beat them, so hopefully we can start the season strongly,” said Westley. “I think they’ll admit we controlled the game for most of it, but we made it very, very difficult for ourselves to win. But it was a fantastic game of cricket for the neutral and the spectator, and it was nice to beat them. It’ll go a long way towards us trying to beat them again in 2019.””Places are not nailed down in [England’s] top three, which gives a lot of hope for us county cricketers who want to play for England.”The selectors have been very good; say with [Rory] Burns for instance, he definitely deserved his chance last year because of the weight of runs he scored in the county game.”And picking Joe Denly in the winter gives every 30-plus cricketer hope that, if you do work out your game a bit later or do fantastically well, then you do have the opportunity to potentially play for your country.”That’s very important because it gives everybody hope and a nice pathway. You don’t just feel that no matter what you do your time’s gone.”

Liverpool could land Matip upgrade by signing £34m-rated "future legend"

Having come just two matches away from winning a quadruple during the 2021/22 season, Liverpool finishing outside the top four in the last term was certainly unprecedented.

While Jurgen Klopp will have been unhappy with his side’s display throughout the campaign, last season was important for the club to begin their rebuild from the team that won the Premier League and the Champions League twelve months apart a few years back.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The manager and his recruitment staff made a lot of new additions to the playing staff, selling some high-profile, ageing stars and this rebuild could continue ahead of the January transfer window.

Liverpool transfer news – Piero Hincapie

According to a report from South American journalist Christian Martin, the Reds are one of several European clubs who will battle it out for Bayer Leverkusen central defender Piero Hincapie. The reporter is also claiming that Newcastle United, AS Roma and AC Milan are all keen to secure the Ecuador international’s signature in the near future.

Hincapie signed for Leverkusen from Talleres in Argentina for a reported £7m and had a £39m release clause in his deal with the German outfit. However, having signed a new four-year deal with the Bundesliga’s current league leaders back in February, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed that no buyout clause had been included in his updated contract.

Furthermore, 90min journalist Graeme Bailey revealed last Friday that Hincapie was being scouted by Liverpool’s recruitment team, with his value being placed at £34m, as per CIES Football Observatory.

Piero Hincapie’s stats this season

In his first two seasons with Leverkusen, Hincapie was one of the first names on the teamsheet and made 76 appearances for the German giants in all competitions. However, the Ecuadorian has found himself as a bit-part player this term under head coach Xabi Alonso, having made merely two starts in the Bundesliga.

The 21-year-old started the season with a fractured foot which certainly hasn’t helped his game-time. As a result of his absence, Alonso was forced to utilise a back three of Edmond Tapsoba, Jonathan Tah and Odilon Koussouno. Incidentally, this trio have been in superb form, leaving Hincapie as a peripheral figure this term.

His lack of minutes this season could be the catalyst for a move away from Leverkusen and Liverpool could be the perfect option for him, particularly with both Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip being on the wrong side of 30 now and with the latter’s contract expiring at the end of the campaign, having just picked up yet another nasty knee injury.

Given Van Dijk has played predominantly as a left centre-back throughout his career at Anfield, Hincapie could be the Dutchman’s long-term replacement, particularly as he is left-footed.

However, in the short term, the defender could take Matip’s place in the squad should the veteran leave this summer. In fact, Hincapie is outperforming Matip in several key defensive metrics this term.

Furthermore, Hincapie has played at left-back 35 times throughout his infant career, meaning the youngster could even rotate with Andy Robertson, allowing Klopp to switch to a back three in possession, as he likes to do, with Trent Alexander-Arnold inverting into midfield on the opposite side.

Hincapie has a very bright future in the game, with football scout Jacek Kulig even claiming that the young centre-back is a “future legend of Ecuadorian football”.

With Van Dijk and Matip nearing the end of their careers at Anfield, Hincapie could be Ibrahima Konate’s ideal partner in the very near future.

Newcastle could land £69m-rated Anthony Gordon rival who’s like Saka

Halloween may have passed but Newcastle United are still being haunted by their injury problems with a whopping 12 players sidelined, including star players Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes.

In their 2-0 defeat against Bournemouth on Saturday, the lack of quality in their squad was prevalent as Eddie Howe was forced into playing 17-year-old Lewis Miley in central midfield while Matt Ritchie came on to replace the injured Miguel Almiron to make his first appearance of the season.

With an abundance of attacking talent stuck on the injury table, the January transfer window can't come quick enough for the Magpies as they attempt to acquire a few quality additions that can aid them in their quest for a top-four challenge.

Despite scoring the joint-third most goals in the Premier League – 27 in 12 matches – Howe is still looking to bolster his attack and could land a sensational prospect who is plying his trade in Spain.

Newcastle transfer news – Nico Williams

Newcastle have been chasing Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams for quite some time now but face stiff competition from other European giants.

In September, Spanish outlet SPORT [via Sport Witness] reported that the 21-year-old was a priority target for Barcelona and was 'everything they are looking for' in a player.

Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams.

However, the report also highlighted that the Magpies are one of the English sides 'following the player closely' alongside Premier League rivals Liverpool and Aston Villa.

According to a more recent update from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, William's agent has revealed they are "still waiting" for progression in negotiations over a new contract, which expires in June 2024 – meaning Newcastle, and other suitors, could negotiate a pre-contract deal with the Spanish prodigy once the January transfer window opens.

Much like Anthony Gordon, who has scored four goals in 11 appearances this term, Williams is predominantly a right-footed left winger, who thrives at gliding past the opposition with his searing pace and precise dribbling.

If Newcastle were to successfully agree on a pre-contract agreement in January, he would provide the Englishman with some quality competition on the left flank.

How Nico Williams compares to Anthony Gordon

Williams is quickly turning into one of the most sought-after players in Europe and comparisons to Bukayo Saka, as per FBref, showcase why so many clubs are interested in securing his signature.

Saka is one of the best young players in the world at manipulating the ball onto either foot and weaving past defenders with his precise dribbling but in the past year, William's has outperformed the England star across various attacking metrics, including progressive carries, successful take-ons and carries into the penalty area.

This shows that the Bilbao star is very dangerous in the attacking third with the two fundamentals of his game being his high-energy pressing and explosive ball-carrying that are readily associated with Howe's devastating counter-attack.

Indeed, the extremely dynamic and deceptively powerful Williams, who is valued at £69m (€80m) as per CIES Football Observatory, would provide the Newcastle attack with an added dimension, as demonstrated by how he ranks against the electrifying Gordon.

While the Toon star has scored more goals than the ten-cap Spain international this term ( four v one), the 5 foot 11 phenom is a "difference maker" in the final third, as lauded by Spanish teammate Rodri, having recorded more big chances created (six v five), assists (five v two), key passes (2.1 v 0.8) and balls recovered per game (4.9 v 3.8) than Gordon, as per Sofascore.

The statistics above suggest that Howe should do everything to sign the "true winger", as described by his former coach Luis Enrique, who would light up St James Park with his skill, speed and trickery.

PCB repossesses Multan Sultans after payment failure

The PCB has terminated the eight-year ownership rights of Multan Sultans after the franchise failed to pay their annual fee of $5.2 million

Umar Farooq10-Nov-2018The PCB has terminated the eight-year ownership rights of Multan Sultans. It came to this point after the franchise failed to pay their annual fee of USD 5.2 million. An official from the PCB confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the PCB repossessed the ownership rights, and may put them up for resale before the start of next year’s PSL.The franchise was owned by Schön Group, a Dubai-based enterprise well-established in the real estate business. Last year, they won the rights to Multan Sultans for eight years for USD 41.6 million (USD 5.2 million per season). But within weeks of taking over, the franchise struggled with finances and this year they failed to pay their annual fee. The PCB hasn’t abolished the team, instead deciding to run the franchise’s day-to-day affairs themselves until a new buyer comes forward. The new buyer will have the right to choose their own team name. The PCB will now enter into a tender process to grant “repackaged rights” of the sixth team. “The rights holder will have the option of choosing the sixth franchise city and name. The board shall take complete responsibility of all player and coach contracts,” the PCB said in a statement. “Pending further updates, the team shall be referred to as ‘The Sixth Team’ of PSL.”The immediate challenge for the PCB is to select the squad for the sixth team in the upcoming season of the PSL, which starts on February 14 in Dubai. The players’ draft is set to be held on November 20 in Islamabad. With no owner at this stage, the PCB is likely to exercise its reserved rights to choose the squad with the help of same team management headed by Wasim Akram, which had functioned in the previous season. The arrangement will be carried out under special dispensation, and the new owner will have to accept the new ownership contract, with an already selected team for the upcoming season.”While this is an unfortunate turn of events, we have to ensure strict adherence to contractual obligations for the well-being of the Pakistan Super League,” Ehsan Mani, PCB chairman, said. “We wish Schon Group well with their future endeavours.”I want to reassure our partners – franchisees, sponsors, players, coaches and fans – that the Pakistan Super League will take place as planned. Our preparations are in full swing starting with the PSL draft in Islamabad. The 2019 edition of the PSL will be a memorable one with as many as eight matches including the play-offs and the final scheduled to take place in Pakistan.”PCB appreciates that Schon Group was the only bidder to meet the reserve price (USD 5.2 million per annum) PCB had set for the sale of the Multan franchise,” the statement said. “This was double the amount for which PCB had in 2015 sold the most valuable PSL franchise. Asher Schon in particular has worked hard in building the Multan Sultans brand.””It has been a privilege being a PSL team owner over the past year,” Asher Schon, the former Multan Sultans owner, said in a statement. “I am proud of the support Schon has always extended to Pakistan cricket and current affairs notwithstanding, will continue to passionately support it.”In 2015, the PCB had sold the first five PSL franchises for USD 93 million for a ten-year period. Karachi became the most expensive team, with the ARY Group shelling out USD 26 million to gain ownership. Lahore was sold for USD 25 million, Peshawar for USD 16 million, Islamabad for USD 15 million and Quetta for USD 11 million.

Newcastle want to sign "really good" Premier League ace with Howe a big fan

Newcastle United are believed to be interested in making a January move for a "really good" Premier League player who is currently enjoying an excellent season.

Newcastle eyeing January signings

The Magpies' squad looks decimated at the moment, with a string of injury problems arguably holding them back in both the league and the Champions League. A new fitness issue seems to emerge in almost every game currently, and last Saturday's 2-0 defeat away to Bournemouth was a tired-looking performance that highlighted the need for new signings to arrive in the January transfer window.

Newcastle have been strongly linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, seeing him as arguably a standout option to come in for the suspended Sandro Tonali for the rest of the campaign, while other players are also seen as targets, including Manchester United's Scott McTominay. It is understandable why midfield additions have taken precedence, but the Magpies could also target players in other areas of the pitch, and a fresh claim suggests that they could be eyeing defensive reinforcements.

Newcastle want Jarrad Branthwaite

According to a new update from Football Transfers, Newcastle are keen on signing Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite in January.

"Newcastle United have targeted Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as the man to strengthen the heart of their defence, FootballTransfers can exclusively reveal. Manager Eddie Howe is a particularly big fan of the centre-back, who spent last season on loan at PSV in the Eredivisie.

"Since returning to Everton, 21-year-old Branthwaite has quickly won his place in the starting XI and has been one of the standout defenders in the Premier League this season. Now Newcastle and Howe have earmarked him to become the long-term successor to Fabian Schar, who is now 31."

Branthwaite could be a fantastic signing by Newcastle if they manage to snap him up midway through the season, with the Englishman enjoying an excellent season for Everton to date. The 21-year-old returned to Goodison Park in the summer, following a loan spell at PSV Eindhoven, and he has hit the ground running. Branthwaite has made 10 starts in the Premier League this season, averaging 5.1 clearances and 2.7 aerial duel wins per game in the competition, and the Blues will clearly be desperate to keep hold of him.

The lure of playing for a team once again challenging for Champions League football could be too much for the centre-back to ignore, however, and he may think that he can oust Fabian Schar from the off at St James' Park, becoming Sven Botman's strongest defensive partner for the foreseeable future.

Someone who is clearly impressed with Branthwaite is Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who recently described him as a "really good left-footed centre-half", which is high praise from a big figure in the game. At just 21, Branthwaite is already a regular for a Premier League team, playing a key role in Everton's improvement this season in the process, and he is someone who could mature into a future England international, highlighting why Newcastle would be wise to make a move for him when January arrives.

Real Madrid "hot on the trail" of Chelsea star who "has everything"

Chelsea could be on the lookout for even more signings after a poor start to the season in the Premier League, but they are now reportedly under threat of losing one of their star men.

Pochettino under pressure at Chelsea

After a disastrous time of things at Stamford Bridge last season, things haven't got a huge amount better since Mauricio Pochettino took charge during the summer. Ahead of the weekend league action, which sees Chelsea make the trip to current leaders and huge rivals Tottenham on Monday night, the Blues sit in 11th place in the table.

Pochettino rightly finds himself under a lot of pressure, even though he does need time to make his mark, and it is paramount that there are noticeable improvements sooner rather than later.

The Argentine has had a number of key players injured however – those who will be vital to the club's success moving forward – and a concerning report has dropped regarding one such individual.

Real Madrid "hot on the trail" of Reece James

According to TEAMtalk, Reece James could be set to leave Chelsea for Real Madrid, with the La Liga giants "hot on the trail" of Chelsea's captain as they "hope that he can become their next Jude Bellingham".

The Chelsea defender returned from injury on Wednesday against Blackburn and his form will now apparently be watched "closely" by those in power in the Spanish capital.

The report explains: "Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has admired James for some time and after the incredible impact of Bellingham since he signed from Borussia Dortmund, the manager certainly wouldn’t be averse to bringing another English talent into the fold.

"Los Blancos’ scouts have earmarked James as a perfect candidate to take over from Dani Carvajal on the right side of the defence and reports have been put together on him over recent seasons. TEAMtalk sources indicate that Real Madrid remain very interested in James, and checks will be made on him this season as they consider their options. Prying him away from Chelsea will be far from straightforward, however."

Losing James is something that is unthinkable in the eyes of Chelsea supporters, with the Englishman arguably the best player at the entire club, having come through the youth team and become one of the best right-backs in Europe.

Granted, the 23-year-old's injury problems are becoming a big issue, with a lack of playing time already again this season, but he is Chelsea's skipper for a reason and someone who the team needs to be built around for years to come.

The lure of playing for Madrid is clearly great, though, as Bellingham showed by going there earlier this year, and James could be intrigued by the idea of being Dani Carvajal's long-term replaceent at Santiago Bernabeu.

Chelsea simply must do all they can to retain their skipper's services, having been hailed as a player who has "got everything" by Ian Wright, and the hope is that he remains happy in west London for the foreseeable future, despite the Blues' current form.

Afghanistan spinner Zahir Khan joins Lancashire

The 19-year-old will be part of the squad for the remainder of the season as Lancashire bolster their spin resources

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Aug-2018Lancashire have signed Afghanistan left-arm wristspinner Zahir Khan for the remainder of the season.Zahir, 19, has an impressive record with both red and white ball, having taken 34 first-class wickets at 13.14, alongside 19 at 22.42 in List A and 15 at 13.53 in T20 cricket. He is yet to make his international debut although he was part of Afghanistan’s squad for their inaugural Test against India and played at last year’s Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. He was also part of the Rajasthan Royals squad for this year’s IPL before being ruled out due to an injury, without playing any game.He becomes the fourth Afghanistan cricketer to join a county this season following Rashid Khan (Sussex), Mohammad Nabi (Leicestershire) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (Hampshire).”I’m really excited to be signing for Lancashire for the rest of the campaign, ” he said. “It’s always been an ambition of mine to play county cricket in England and test myself against some of the world’s best players. I can’t wait to get started now.”I have heard a lot of good things about Lancashire and Old Trafford from Jos Buttler when I played with him at the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and I hope to make a significant contribution during my stay here.”Zahir’s signing continues Lancashire’s bolstering of their spin resources after they also brought in Scotland’s left-arm spinner Mark Watt.

Spurs nearly signed £34k-p/w "wall" instead of Micky van de Ven this summer

Tottenham Hotspur were considering a summer deal to sign an exciting young defender instead of Micky Van De Ven, according to a reliable journalist.

Tottenham's summer signings

Before September 1st, Ange Postecoglou recruited nine fresh faces in the form of Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Pedro Porro, Dejan Kulusevski, Guglielmo Vicario, Alejo Veliz, Ashley Phillips, Manor Solomon and Van De Ven, and they have already been linked with several new targets.

Ahead of January, Daniel Levy has reportedly taken Norwich City goalkeeper Dylan Thompson on trial, whilst he is also plotting moves for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino and Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba, though it’s the latter’s teammate who could have previously made the switch to N17.

Meanwhile, Piero Hincapie first emerged as a target for the Lilywhites back in January having held talks under the management of former boss Antonio Conte, but eventually, the hierarchy were priced out of a deal before the deadline at the start of the year.

Now, Ecuador’s centre-back is strongly on the radar of Premier League rivals Liverpool, who are exploring the conditions of a deal, but should the following update be believed, the 21-year-old was almost on his way to North London.

Piero Hincapie transfer update…

Taking to X, The Daily Mirror’s Ryan Taylor revealed in a Piero Hincapie transfer update that Spurs weighed up an approach for the star over the summer, but in the end, decided to pursue Van De Ven instead:

Moises Caicedo’s agent Manu Sierra says he’s held dialogue with Liverpool over his second high-profile client — Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie. Spurs looked at signing the left-sided defender before landing Micky van de Ven.”

Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie.

How good is Piero Hincapie?

According to football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Hincapie is an “Ecuadorian Wall” for the solidity he provides at the heart of Bayer Leverkusen’s backline, which he showed in his high standard of performances last season, so it doesn’t make sense that Tottenham didn’t pursue him as well as Van de Ven.

Sponsored by Adidas (Transfermarkt – Hincapie profile), the left-footed ace averaged 2.5 clearances and two aerial wins per game during the previous term in the Bundesliga (WhoScored – Hincapie statistics), but he’s also capable of making a positive impact at the opposite end of the pitch.

Since joining Xabi Alonso’s side, the £34k-per-week earner (Bayer Leverkusen salaries) has posted five goal contributions (three goals and two assists) in 81 appearances, which highlights his ability to pose a threat to an opposition’s defence from set pieces.

Furthermore, Hincapie has previously operated at left-back and slightly higher up in the midfield alongside his usual role at centre-back, so he could have been a versatile option for Postecoglou to have in the building, and we feel he'd be an excellent future signing to back-up and potentially succeed Cristian Romero, partnering Van de Ven in the long term.
