Calvert-Lewin sold: Three Everton players TFG must axe in January

Change will soon be afoot at Everton, but how drastic, and surface-level, remains to be seen. Will Sean Dyche stand in the dugout this time next year? Will the Friedkin Group have completed their club takeover? Will the squad bear many different faces?

Everton need reorienting. It’s been difficult, over the past several years, for a club whose prestige and devoted fanbase yearns for a place on the top floor of the Premier League, but instead languishes near the pit.

The first-team squad is obviously going to need reinforcing, with various positions demanding improvements. But Everton must ensure that they free themselves of several struggling stars to ease the process.

The money won’t flow, not from the offing in any case. Everton bosses will need to approach the market with tact and a shrewd eye.

Let’s take a look at three players who might receive the chop this winter.

1

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin

First up, we have Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Most Everton supporters are aware that the 27-year-old striker is nearing the end of his £100k-per-week contract, but a January departure should not out of the question, amid the risk of losing him for nothing next summer.

He’s started each of Everton’s 11 Premier League fixtures this season but has failed to marry an impressive level of performance with his rekindled fitness.

To have manufactured nine big chances in front of goal this season and taken only two of those seems to be emblematic of Everton’s woes. This is a team bereft of attacking inspiration, but also encumbered by a striker lacking a finishing touch.

Beto is making headway in an Everton shirt for the first time and Armando Broja will be looking to make his debut in the coming weeks. There is cause for optimism up front at Goodison Park.

Given the financial issues that the Merseysiders are beset with, it would be tempting to accept an offer for Calvert-Lewin, should one be forthcoming this winter. There are sufficient options to compensate for a player who, truthfully, is flattering to deceive as the end draws near.

The 11-cap England international might not be the only one to leave before his time. This next Evertonian is really struggling to impress.

2

Jesper Lindstrom

Everton winger Jesper Lindstrom

At the start of August, Jesper Lindstrom aimed to “show the world I still have my level,” but unfortunately that hasn’t been the case. Or, if it has, then his level is one that languishes low.

The Danish winger has some attractive properties: he’s technically sharp and proactive both in and out of possession – Lindstrom works tirelessly, in attack and defensive situations.

His end product has let him down, and in a team that is fighting relegation and lacking a free-scoring centre-forward, this is a big problem. The Athletic’s Paddy Boyland said though: “Still, at least he’s troubling defenders and a bit of something different for Everton in attack.

It’s not all that different, though, given that he can’t conjure up a steady stream of goalscoring. Signed from Napoli on a one-year loan deal, with an option for a £18m purchase next summer, he has since posted just one assist across ten appearances, yet to score.

Jesper Lindstrom for Everton

Is this enough to suggest that he deserves a permanent place in an Everton squad heading into a new era? Honestly, if the club are hoping to level up in the years to come, Lindstrom will need to showcase some dramatic improvements, especially with transfer targets like Luiz Henrique being considered.

Henrique is making waves in the Brasileiro Serie A, and reports late last week revealed that the Toffees have been dazzled by the winger’s quality and could table an official bid in 2025.

Henrique ranks among the top 8% of attacking midfielders and wingers across divisions similar to the Brazilian top flight over the past year for progressive carries per 90 (2.82), as per FBref, and could bring that electric flair to Dyche’s team.

He’d need a player of quality and security behind him down the right lane, though, and while veteran Seamus Coleman will hope to keep his role in the first-team squad, Ashley Young must surely be ditched.

3

Ashley Young

Ashley Young looks dejected for Everton

Young is 39 years old and still kicking (literally) in the Premier League. He’s led one of the most storied careers in English football across the past two decades, but Father Time is calling and he can’t reprise his role in Everton’s squad next year.

In fact, it might be in the outfit’s best interests to rid themselves of the versatile defender next year. He’s out of contract next summer, having penned a one-year contract extension this summer.

Remarkably, he’s still operating at a good level, most notably coming out on top in 65% of his ground duels this season, as per Sofascore, but Young’s recent bright patch is not going to be sustained, and indeed, has been preceded by some dreadful performances that led to him being described as “diabolical” by pundit Andy Hinchcliffe, who also lambasted his “dreadful defending.”

Nathan Patterson’s fitness levels have left plenty to be desired, but the Scottish defender is a talented player and will be desperate to restore his place in the squad, having been an unused substitute for Dyche’s side across the past four matches in the Premier League, previously sidelined for the duration of the season’s early stage.

Young only earns £40k per week, but it’s going to be a fresh start for Everton, hopefully, and Young must be ushered out to avoid further stagnation.

Shadab's all-round display seals Pakistan's series win

For the second night in a row, Pakistan’s well-rounded bowling attack saw the home side successfully defend a total, and in the process gave the hosts an unassailable 2-0 lead over West Indies in the three-game T20I series.Ten overs into the chase, West Indies looked on course to chase the 173 target down courtesy opener Brandon King’s elegant strokeplay, but it all unravelled rather quickly thereafter.Shadab Khan strangled the batters with 0 for 22, Mohammad Nawaz got crucial wickets, Mohammad Wasim Jr bowled to his plans, Shaheen Shah Afridi claimed three middle-order victims in one over and Haris Rauf dismissed King – and the tenth wicket off the game’s last ball – to seal the deal for Pakistan. In hindsight, though, Shadab’s more crucial contribution came with the bat and not the ball. His 12-ball cameo of 28 in the first innings ended up being the difference between the two sides with Pakistan winning by only nine runs.Akeal Hosein’s encoreOn Monday, Hosein got Babar Azam for zero in his spell of 1 for 19. Tonight, he indirectly effected Babar’s dismissal for 7 when he strangled the run-scoring from one end after Pakistan chose to bat. Mohammad Rizwan tried to look for a run that wasn’t there and ran his opening partner out in the third over when they took on Hayden Walsh Jr’s arm from backward point. Hosein’s stock ball was the length delivery that drifted into the right-handers when the ball was brand new, not allowing them to free their arms. When Fakhar Zaman came in, West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran persisted with Hosein despite what conventional wisdom suggests for a left-arm fingerspinner. He dragged back a delivery’s length – in the first ball of the fifth over – after spotting Fakhar giving him the charge, and the away movement in the air took the ball past the bat for Pooran to stump him. Hosein bowled four straight overs after taking the new ball, and was done for the evening by the seventh over, taking 1 for 16 with 14 dot balls. At the time, Pakistan’s score read 55 for 2 and with Rizwan and Haider Ali at the crease, the situation was eerily similar to the first T20I.A middle-order wobbleBut it wasn’t to be like the first T20I where Rizwan and Haider struck exquisite fifties to lift Pakistan to 200. Instead, Rizwan fell for a 30-ball 38 off sixth bowler Odean Smith’s first delivery of the match, just when he looked to accelerate. In Smith’s next over, Haider was caught at deep point for a struggling 34-ball 31. Neither of those were wicket-taking deliveries though, Rizwan was out to a wide slower ball that he bunted to cover and Haider had almost enough in his shot for a six after heaving a wide ball over point. The 15th over brought another wicket with Nawaz sweeping a Walsh delivery strongly, but was gone for 1 after finding the only fielder in the deep on the leg side. With three wickets falling for 25 runs, it seemed that Pakistan would miss out on the impetus they needed for a big whirl in the death overs.Iftikhar, Shadab turn it onIftikhar Ahmed, though, stayed aggressive despite the fall of wickets. He came in after Rizwan’s wicket, and punished Walsh’s half-tracker early for four. He then dealt in quick runs between the wickets in Asif Ali’s company. And when Oshane Thomas brought back some extra pace in the 18th over, he punished the tall right-arm quick by drilling two sixes over deep midwicket and long off. However, just when Iftikhar looked to give Pakistan a big flourish, he was caught behind off Thomas’ last ball of the over for a 19-ball 32.With two overs to go and Pakistan having gained some momentum after the middle-overs trouble, Shadab took over. The 19th began with him hitting a four and a six, and the 20th saw Shadab smacking Romario Shepherd over his head for two sixes. Shadab uses the depth of the crease to get right under the ball, and his 12-ball cameo of 28 lifted Pakistan to a competitive 172 for 8.Brandon King gave a good account of himself•PCB

King’s regal inningsHis first boundary was streaky, an inside edge down to fine leg, but after that, the opener found his range. Nawaz, who shared the new ball with Afridi, was drilled over long on for six in the second over and Rauf was swatted over mid on in the penultimate ball of the powerplay. In between, he resorted to safe shots along the ground while hitting occasional fours after watching Shai Hope and Shamarh Brooks return to the dugout for low scores. While King got on top of the bowlers, the No. 4 Pooran struggled to hit the gaps. He scored only 20 runs in his first 24 balls. Then came Pooran’s first six in the 11th over, cracking Nawaz over deep square leg but was holed out next ball as he tried to repeat the process. In Rovman Powell’s company, King reached his fifty in 35 balls by finding a boundary behind point in the 13th over and then swatted Shadab for a one-handed six over the bowler’s head. But like King’s previous partner Pooran, Powell was not fluent, and was gone for an 11-ball four.Nonetheless, with six overs to go and six wickets in hand, the target was within touching distance for West Indies, more so with King out there and the line-up possessing big hitters right up to No. 9. He brought the equation down to 55 off 29 after smacking Rauf over deep midwicket for six, but just like Pooran, was out next ball trying to repeat a maximum. His 43-ball 67, though, had set the base for rest of West Indies’ batters to get to the target with a few big shots every over.Shaheen too hot for West IndiesBut Afridi still had two overs up his sleeve when West Indies needed 46 off 24, and the first of them brought three wickets. Odean found Asif on the boundary line, Dominic Drakes edged one to Rizwan and an almost-yorker rattled Walsh’s stumps. The score of 127 for 5 now read 131 for 8, only one result likely from here on.But Romario Shepherd had one last throw of the dice. After pumping a six in the 18th and a four in the 19th, the equation read 23 off the last over that was to be bowled by Rauf.Shepherd eked out two off the first ball and followed it up with a six over square leg. After refusing the No. 11 a single, Shepherd then found the third-man boundary to bring the equation down to 11 off two. The fifth ball had four written all over it after Shepherd drilled a shot over cover, but Asif ran along the boundary line and got his thigh in the way to stop the four. And with the No. 11 on strike for the final ball, Rauf ensured Pakistan claimed all ten wickets for the second night in a row by bowling a yorker that was too good for Oshane.

£175m asking price: Spurs could suffer Kane 2.0 if incredible ace is sold

The weight of the goodbye merely drew attention to the connection that Harry Kane forged with Tottenham Hotspur across the lion’s share of his career.

England and Spurs’ all-time top goalscorer now plies his craft with Bayern Munich in the German Bundesliga, having completed a £100m transfer to the Bavarian outfit in August 2023 after many years of service on the white patch of England’s capital, notching 280 goals and 61 assists across 235 fixtures.

He might not have won any silverware with Tottenham but Kane certainly etched his name into English history, arguably the country’s finest-ever striker, absurdly clinical in the Premier League.

His sale was not so much necessary as forced by the club’s failings over the seasons leading up to that fateful moment – but why would he have stayed, given the direction, or lack thereof?

Ange Postecoglou has since spun Tottenham back around and there’s a restored identity and bite to the Lilywhites, but flawed football confirms that there is plenty of work still to do, and it’s paramount that the Australian manager does not lose another star man.

Spurs could lose important player

Cristian Romero has risen to prominence as one of the game’s finest centre-halves over the past several years in the Premier League, and Real Madrid have taken note.

Tottenham defender Cristian Romero

Carlo Ancelotti’s imperious outfit appear to be surveying the market for a new central defender and Romero has been earmarked.

That said, reports from Spain over the summer suggested that the north Londoners have immediately slapped a jaw-dropping £175m price tag on the 6 foot 1 titan’s name, hoping to dissuade the La Liga and Champions League title holders from advancing their intrigue.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has placated in recent days the fear at the fanbase’s collective heart after confirming that, despite reports from Argentina, there is indeed no €65m (£54m) release clause in Romero’s contract.

Still, Los Blancos usually get what they want, but Daniel Levy and his senior office will need to work overtime to convince the 26-year-old that his place is in Postecoglou’s backline.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Why Spurs must not sell Cristian Romero

Romero has been at Tottenham for a few years now, moving from Italian side Atalanta in a deal worth around £42m in 2021. He’s completed 106 matches, scoring seven goals, and has been praised for his “incredible” technical quality by Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold.

As per FBref, Romero ranks among the top 8% of centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 10% for pass completion, the top 12% for progressive passes, the top 19% for blocks and the top 16% for tackles and aerial battles won per 90.

He’s infamous for his aggressive, tough-tackling defensive game but Romero expertly adds a dimension from deep in the final third, drifting forward to latch onto set-piece deliveries, while he’s also blessed with a ball-playing game that allows Postecoglou’s fast-flowing style of football to operate to the nth degree.

Losing him would be cataclysmic, akin to that of Kane’s sale. The Argentina international, champion at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has been pronounced the “best defender in the world” by his compatriot Lionel Messi and simply will not be replaced effectively, for players of his category are scanty.

Oh sure, there’s plenty of defensive talent stubbled across the face of the footballing landscape, but Romero’s skillset is a singular thing, and his captaincy of the Lilywhites across the past two Premier League matches – including the extraordinary 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford – only underscores further the importance of keeping him down N17.

Micky van de Ven, athletic and imposing, earns plenty of plaudits for his flashy movements and loping strides, but he’s not on Romero’s level, not if you look a little closer. You can take a peek now, and see how Romero is far crisper, far more influential, far more involved and assertive.

We looked earlier at Kane’s brilliance at Tottenham, and though his sale was somewhat inevitable, for he had concluded the penultimate year of his contract and Spurs had finished eighth in the Premier League, closing the door on European competition, it still shouldn’t have happened.

Tottenham should not have fallen so heavily by the wayside after losing the Champions League final against Liverpool in 2019, a bitter defeat that knocked the project askew for several years onward.

Postecoglou, let’s not forget, took the reins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium following the misery of Antonio Conte’s tenure, with so many loose parts creating an air of negativity and helplessness.

Now, there’s light at the end of the tunnel, with a cautiously tangible sense that Tottenham might actually win something, this year, next year – who knows?

The drought will end, but only if linchpins such as Romero are kept on the books. If Romero leaves, it sets a precedent that could topple the work that is being forged.

Romero has just under three years left on his £165k-per-week contract, and Romano has indeed quashed rumours that a £65m release clause is embedded in that tome of contractual terms and conditions.

Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero

Tottenham’s fast start under Postecoglou last season showcased a level of attacking quality that could have achieved great things, had it been sustained and injury issues not boiled up.

Kane would have been sensational at the spearhead. Instead, he plundered 44 goals and 12 assists across 45 appearances for Bayern.

Now that framework has been placed and held in the Tottenham squad, Postecoglou must throw the kitchen sink at keeping Romero at the core of his plans over the coming years, lest Spurs suffer a regression and fail to realise their trophy-triumphing potential.

Starc set to face Sri Lanka after 'nervous moments' following blow on knee

Mitchell Starc is set to take his place in Australia’s line-up against Sri Lanka after overcoming a fierce blow on the knee from a Mitchell Marsh shot during training although coach Justin Langer admitted the team “were really worried” for a short time.Starc was struck on the right knee by a straight drive in his follow-through during Australia’s Tuesday night training session at the ICC Academy. He left the session with a heavy limp and in some discomfort, but was moving without assistance.Starc trained fully on Wednesday with a compression bandage on his knee but did bat and bowl during the session with medical staff continuing to monitor his bruising but Langer was upbeat.”He’ll be playing, don’t worry about that. We had a couple of nervous moments. In the nets Mitch Marsh smacked one back at him and hit him straight in the right knee,” he told . “We were really worried about it, but he is that tough. He is an elite athlete and he’s bloody tough. He came out, trained yesterday and he’ll be up and running.”Related

  • Starc's clarity of role brings confidence in white-ball cricket

  • Langer says Australia will be flexible in selections depending on conditions, opposition, match-ups

Australia have two matches in three days, as they face Sri Lanka on Thursday and England on Saturday, and management of their fast bowling stocks will be critical.Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins all played in Australia’s opening win against South Africa in Abu Dhabi as part of an attack with only four specialist bowlers. It was the first time all three had played a T20I together, having played six times together in T20s for Sydney Sixers in 2012, with the Sixers winning all six games.Kane Richardson and Ashton Agar were left out of the win over South Africa and Langer said the decision was very tough. The coach stressed Australia would be flexible throughout the tournament with their selections, depending on conditions and match-ups.

Dyche could drop Doucoure by unleashing "standout" Everton star

Much has happened since Everton claimed their first point of the Premier League campaign at Leicester City last week, with The Friedkin Group set to purchase Farhad Moshiri’s majority stake in the club and usher in a new era.

For Sean Dyche, it could be the beginning of a new project on Merseyside, but he will know that he is teetering on the precipice at Goodison Park, and that a poor result against Crystal Palace this afternoon could have dire consequences for his tenure.

Everton’s dicey defending this term has led to some dreadful results – The Toffees have led across each of their past three top-flight matches but capitulated in the first two, slipping from two-goal leads, as well as allowing Leicester to come back and draw last weekend.

It couldn’t be a better time for Jarrad Branthwaite to make his anticipated return.

Jarrad Branthwaite's return from injury

Branthwaite returned to action last weekend for Everton’s U21s, winning 4-3 against Sunderland U21s and playing the full 90. He’s been absent throughout the start of the senior squad’s season due to a groin problem, but could bring his hulking presence into the rear against Palace.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

The 22-year-old was a mainstay for Dyche last season, forging a formidable defensive partnership with James Tarkowski. He impressively won 68% of his contested duels and was even hailed as an “absolute monster” by talent scout Jacek Kulig for his efforts.

Standing at 6 foot 5, he’s a real unit and offers an athletic mobility that will ensure that he restores some defensive steel both aerially and on the ground.

It’s crucial that he starts against an Eagles side that need three points just as much as Everton. However, he’s not the only change that must be made, with Tim Iroegbunam’s skillset also required to put Palace to the sword.

Why Tim Iroegbunam must start vs Crystal Palace

Iroegbunam signed for Everton from Aston Villa in a reported £9m package this summer, with the 21-year-old starting the first four of the club’s Premier League matches and even being hailed by The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland as one of the “standout” players from the side’s season thus far.

Tim Iroegbunam for Everton

The deep-sitting midfielder needs to refine his ball-playing game but has impressed through his defensive metrics, winning 3.4 tackles and averaging 6.4 ball recoveries per game, also succeeding with 6.4 duels, as per Sofascore.

Such numbers actually see him rank among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for tackles, the top 6% for interceptions and the top 9% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref, leading reporter Chris Beesley to hail him as “the brightest spark from a tough start”.

He could be crucial in nullifying Ebere Eze, who has the capacity to run rampant for the visitors. Eze has only scored one goal from five Premier League matches this year but has averaged two key passes, 1.8 dribbles and 5.8 successful duels per game.

A magician of a playmaker with incredible physical powers, Eze will need to be contained if Dyche is going to engineer a positive turning point, and Iroegbunam’s defensive ability – ahead of the returning Branthwaite – is apt to stifle him.

Against Leicester, Abdoulaye Doucoure partnered new signing Orel Mangala in the middle of the park, but this will not do against the south Londoners.

Doucoure, aged 31, worked tirelessly and covered a lot of ground, but Leicester won 56% of the contested duels in the contest, with Doucoure losing four of his seven attempts while committing three fouls.

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure

Palace have struggled to adapt to the new campaign after an emphatic end to last season, and this is understandable after a summer of significant change, but Everton must now exploit this and could benefit from unleashing Ireogbunam once again ahead of Doucoure, with his combativeness potentially key in shackling Palace’s main man, Eze.

He could be Gnonto 2.0: Leeds lining up swoop for "electric" sensation

Leeds United have enjoyed a strong start to the 2024/25 Championship campaign with one defeat in their opening seven matches in the division.

The Whites smashed Coventry City 3-0 in their latest outing at Elland Road on Saturday, thanks to goals from Wilfried Gnonto, Jayden Bogle, and Joel Piroe, and are now preparing for a trip to Norwich City on Tuesday night.

Gnonto scored his second goal of the season against the Sky Blues and provided an assist for Piroe’s goal, as the Italian continued his impressive start to the campaign, with two goals and three ‘big chances’ created in the league.

The Italian whiz has emerged as a key player for Leeds in recent seasons since arriving at the club as a young and exciting talent, and the West Yorkshire outfit are now eyeing up a gem who could follow in his footsteps.

Leeds eyeing up EFL starlet

According to journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, Leeds are interested in Bristol Rovers winger Kofi Shaw ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.

The reporter claims that the Whites and Premier League side Aston Villa are both keeping close tabs on the League One starlet, as Daniel Farke lines up a swoop for the talented teenager.

It states that Shaw is currently happy with the third tier outfit and is, therefore, in no rush to force a move away from the club ahead of the second half of the season.

There is also no mention of how much Bristol Rovers would demand in order to part ways with the 17-year-old winger after the turn of the year.

Farke could, though, land Gnonto 2.0 by securing a deal to sign the teenage sensation ahead of Aston Villa when the transfer window opens again.

Why Kofi Shaw could be Wilfried Gnonto 2.0

Like the Italian forward, Shaw – who is only 17 – would arrive at Elland Road as a teenager with heaps of potential to fulfill during his time at the club.

He would not come in with huge expectations straight away, just as Gnonto did not when he joined as a teenager in the Premier League, and the youngster could be a player the manager looks to work with over the course of a number of seasons.

Shaw also plays in similar positions to the Italy U21 international, as he is a right winger who can also play centrally, and could be developed as his understudy.

The 17-year-old whiz, who was described as “electric” by Bristol Rovers podcaster Joshua Hemmings, has already emerged as a first-team option for his club and recently caught the eye against Spurs in the EFL Trophy.

As you can see in the table above, Shaw found the back of the net and completed an eye-catching six dribbles, whilst winning 11 of his 14 duels, which shows that he can hold his own from a physical perspective.

The Leeds target has also played twice, starting one game, in League One this season and won 80% of his ground duels, which suggests that the teenage wizard is ready for the physicality of professional football.

Therefore, Farke should swoop to sign the electric gem as the club’s next Gnonto, who has scored 15 goals in 80 games, as a young right winger with the potential to develop into a key first-team operator.

Ornstein: 43 y/o who Tom Wagner brought in now set to leave Birmingham City

An influential Birmingham City figure who Tom Wagner brought to the club is now set to leave, according to an update from reliable journalist David Ornstein.

Birmingham face crunch clash with Wrexham

The Blues went into the 2024/25 season as one of the favourites to seal promotion from League One to the Championship, having suffered relegation from the second tier last time around.

Birmingham have made a positive start to the campaign, sitting fourth in the table after four matches and only dropping two points in that time. Wins have been picked up against Wycombe Wanderers, Leyton Orient and Wigan Athletic, with the only draw coming at home to Reading on the opening weekend.

Next up for Chris Davies' side is a crucial clash with current league leaders Wrexham, who continue to impress during a memorable spell for the club, with their recent exploits under Hollywood owners making them one of the most talked-about teams in the Football League.

Birmingham supporters will be hoping to silence the Welsh outfit on Monday night, however, showing that they are the team to beat in League One this season, but they have received a blow in the lead-up to the game.

Birmingham dealt off-field exit blow with Cole set to leave

According to The Athletic's Ornstein, Ashley Cole is now set to leave Birmingham and join the FA as a full-time coach, having been a part of Lee Carsley's coaching team for England's recent UEFA Nations League clashes with the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

The 43-year-old was brought to St Andrew's by owner Wagner last year when Wayne Rooney came in as manager, but it looks as though his time at the club has reached its conclusion after this latest development.

Losing Cole could be considered a blow for Birmingham, considering the wealth of experience he possesses in the game, arguably standing out as England's greatest left-back of all time, enjoying superb spells with Arsenal and Chelsea, prior to impressing in a coaching capacity.

Davies may well be losing a key figure in the dugout, which could have a negative impact on the Blues' promotion hopes, with former interim manager Gary Rowett praising his training expertise last season, saying:

"I’m pleased for Ash because Ash and the lads do a lot of work on set pieces but we’re not the biggest team in the world and they don’t get many rewards from it. It’s a second phase set piece that Ivan smashes in so it was nice for them – I think Ash celebrated it with a little dance."

From Cole's perspective, it is understandable why his head has been turned by the prospect of being involved with England, though, in what represents a huge opportunity to prove himself.

It looks increasingly as though Carsley could replace Gareth Southgate as the Three Lions' next boss, and Cole could be viewing this as a wonderful chance to be heavily involved heading towards the 2026 World Cup.
