Sky Sports claim that Chelsea value Jackson at between £80-100m ($108m-135m), with United among the teams keeping an eye on him. They add the Blues are under no pressure to sell the striker, and teams in the Premier League, Europe, and Saudi Arabia are interested in signing him.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Jackson has been Chelsea's first-choice striker in recent years but that may change with the summer signings of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. The Senegal international had a disappointing end to last season but going by these reports, Chelsea value Jackson very highly and don't seem keen to cash in on him. As a result, it makes it very difficult for a potential suitor to sign him.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Former Villarreal man Jackson, whose Stamford Bridge contract runs until 2033, has scored 30 goals and added 12 assists in 81 appearances for Chelsea so far. Of those games, 70 have been starts but he may not be a regular next season.

Are England cursed?! Thomas Tuchel weighs in on whether England can end 60-year wait for trophy at next World Cup

England coach Thomas Tuchel believes there is no reason why his team cannot replicate the success of the women's and under-21 sides and win a trophy.

Coach doesn't feel pressure after women's & U21 triumphsSenior team haven't won a trophy in 60 yearsTuchel believes successes can be 'good omen'Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

England's U21 side won a second consecutive European Championship this summer while Sarina Wiegman's side successfully defended their women's Euros title in thrilling fashion. It means that the senior team is the only side that has not won a major trophy within the last decade, with the U17s and U20s each winning the World Cup.

AdvertisementWHAT TUCHEL SAID

"No. If it is something then it is a good omen and I was so happy for Sarina [Wiegman] and Lee [Carsley] because they made it and they made an extraordinary effort and a huge success with back-to-back victories," Tuchel said. "It is possible [to win a trophy with England], there is no curse on English teams and it is a good omen and we will do our very best to follow their example."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The senior team lost the last two European Championship finals under Gareth Southgate but Tuchel believes they can be inspired by the achievements of the women's and U21 teams and go all the way at the 2026 World Cup. And he does not think that those triumphs have put more pressure on his team.

PSL broadcast and media rights sale delayed

Bids were due to be submitted by December 22, but after the meeting between the PM and PCB head, bidders were informed that the process would be delayed

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Dec-2023

Naseem Shah, Shadab Khan and Azam Khan arrive for the PSL draft in Lahore•PSL

The bidding for the broadcast and media rights for the PSL has been delayed by two weeks to the beginning of January, meaning the ninth season of the league will only land a broadcast deal a month before it is due to start. Though bids will be submitted to the PCB, the winner will have to be approved by IPC, the government’s ministry for inter-provincial coordination. The delay once again highlights the limitations of the current interim PCB administration, which is under a government mandate to only make decisions on day-to-day affairs and organise elections to set up the Board of Governors. Zaka Ashraf, the current PCB head, met with the interim Prime Minister and patron of the PCB in Islamabad earlier in the week and was told once again that organising the elections and managing daily affairs were his priority.”The Prime Minister/Patron PCB directed PCB that all decisions having financial and contractual implications shall only be taken with the approval of Prime Minister/Patron PCB,” reads a note sent by the IPC to Ashraf after the meeting, and seen by ESPNcricinfo. “Any appointment or awards of rights or contracts of any sort will be violation of the directions of Patron PCB.”The note ends with another reminder that no progress report has been given by the PCB on the organisation of its elections.Related

Sams, Hendricks, Ngidi set for maiden PSL stints

Technical bids for PSL broadcast were due to be submitted by December 22, but after the meeting between the Prime Minister and Ashraf, potential bidders were informed by the PCB that the process would be delayed. The PSL’s broadcast rights have been an important source of revenue for the PCB, fetching USD 24 million for two seasons under the deal just ended. That, in itself, represented a 50% boost on the preceding deal.It is believed the new deal will be for two seasons, in 2024 and 2025. A number of local sports channels are expected to submit bids and there has been speculation about multiple broadcasters forming a consortium to submit bids. Traditionally, the PSL is broadcast live on multiple channels available for viewing in Pakistan, including PTV (Pakistan Television, the state-run broadcaster).Though the draft for the ninth season was held last week, a schedule has not yet been finalised for the ninth season. The start of the season is complicated by general nationwide elections in the country from February 8. The tenure for the current administration also ends on February 4. It is likely the season will begin in mid-February and though there had been talk of moving the start to the UAE, it will go ahead in Pakistan. It is unusual for the state to be directly involved in approving broadcast deals, but it illustrates the administrative limbo the game is in Pakistan at the moment. Because the authority of the administration is so limited, they have been unable to fire the previous team management set-up, but have new personnel in place. Mickey Arthur, the former team director, and Grant Bradburn, the head coach, have been replaced by Mohammad Hafeez in both capacities, but neither of them have been officially ousted by the board. When Ashraf’s tenure ends, and depending on the new government post-elections, it is very likely a new PCB administration will be in place, which may involve yet more upheaval.

Left for £39k: Celtic have already sold an "incredible" Taylor replacement

It’s set to be all change this year in terms of left-backs at Celtic for Brendan Rodgers.

Neither of the Hoops’ current players in that position are contracted to the club beyond 30 June, more on both shortly, while a local hero is poised to return to Parkhead.

However, did Celtic let go the best left-back of them all for just £39k, after he never made a competitive appearance for the club?

The latest on Greg Taylor's future at Celtic

Following Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Hearts, manager Rodgers admitted that left-back Greg Taylor is likely to leave the club upon the expiration of his contract in June, stating “it’s probably more likely now that Greg will move on than stay”.

Rodgers added “we know we’ll need to have someone else if Greg moves on… which is a big shame for me because I love him”.

Davorin Olivari of Croatian outlet Jutarnji List has previously reported that GNK Dinamo Zagreb have ‘sent an offer’ to Taylor, seeking to snap him up on a free transfer, with this his most-likely destination at the moment.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey Schlupp has usurped Taylor in the pecking order, starting the last four Premiership matches, as well as the away leg in Munich, albeit the Ghanian international’s future is up in the air too, given that he’s only on loan from Crystal Palace.

Regardless, Kieran Tierney is set to commence next season as Celtic’s first choice, having reportedly agreed to rejoin his boyhood club on a Bosman from Arsenal.

Of course, Tierney is undeniably a fans’ favourite in Glasgow, and his return will bring with it much fanfare once it is announced, but did Celtic sell an even more impressive left-back for just £39k?

Celtic's forgotten former left-back on fire in MLS

Back in January 2019, Celtic signed a 22-year-old defender by the name of Andrew Gutman from Indiana Hoosiers, after the American had been on trial at fierce rivals Rangers.

Gutman said he was “really honoured” to make the move, adding “I can’t wait to join Celtic and be part of such a storied institution.”

Well, unfortunately for Gutman, he did not play much of a part, never making a competitive appearance in hoops, loaned out to both Charlotte Independence of USL League One and then FC Cincinnati in Major League Soccer, before moving permanently to MLS outfit Atlanta United for only $50,000 (£39k) in General Allocation Money in March 2021.

Since then, Gutman has rather bounced around MLS, spending time at both New York Red Bulls and then Colorado Rapids, before joining the Chicago Fire ahead of the start of the 2024 season.

Back in his home state of Illinois, Gutman has really looked at home under Gregg Berhalter this season, scoring during victories over both FC Dallas and Toronto, earning rave reviews, including from Felipe Cárdenas of the Athletic, who labels him ‘incredible’.

So, let’s assess how his statistics compare to Taylor.

As the table outlines, during a similarly sized sample size, Gutman’s performances in MLS are similar to those of Taylor in the Premiership, with the American actually coming out on top when it comes to most defensive metrics.

Also worth noting that, according to Global Football Rankings, Major League Soccer is the ninth strongest division on the planet, with the Premiership down in 34th place.

So, perhaps letting Gutman leave for a small fee was a mistake, as he could’ve been an upgrade on Taylor had he been given an opportunity, especially considering Transfermakt believe his current market value to be around £586k, around 15 times more than he was sold for.

'Games like this are a real highlight' – Scotland coach Watson after beating West Indies

“Playing to get into a World Cup is as big as it gets,” Richie Berrington, Scotland’s captain, told the host broadcaster after their victory over West Indies in Harare. And it’s the second time he is doing it.Berrington was one of five players who were in the starting XI on March 21, 2018, when their World Cup dream ended with a defeat to West Indies at the same ground. It was Berrington’s wicket that changed the game. With Scotland on 105 for 4 in the 32nd over, chasing 199, Berrington was given out lbw against offspinner Ashley Nurse and with no DRS available, could not request a review. Even to the untrained eye, the delivery appeared to be missing leg stump. Four overs later, the rain came down. Scotland were five runs behind the DLS target of 131 – which would have been fewer had Berrington not been dismissed – and lost the match, and along with it, a chance to appear at the 2019 World Cup.This time, there was not a cloud in the sky as Scotland skittled West Indies for 181 and chased the target with 6.3 overs to spare. Poetically, Berrington played the shot that levelled the scores and was at the other end when the winning runs were scored; runs that will keep West Indies out of the World Cup for the first time in history and gives Scotland another chance of getting to the main event. “Thats’ a blueprint of how we want to play,” Doug Watson, Scotland’s coach, said at the post-match press conference.Scotland used the new ball well in helpful conditions and had West Indies in trouble at 81 of 6 in the 21st over. Although the seventh wicket partnership of 77 went on for longer than Scotland may have liked, West Indies never got away from them. Their chase, dented by the early loss of Christopher McBride, was clinical.Brandon McMullen starred with both bat and ball and is now Scotland’s leading run-scorer and second-highest wicket-taker in the competition. He is quickly becoming the star of the side, after being spotted by former Scotland coach Shane Burger at Durban’s Hilton College and making his debut just seven months ago. McMullen bowled an opening spell of nine overs in this match and has established himself as a go-to player for Berrington and Watson. “He is a lovely team man; gets in and helps everyone,” Watson said. “Just a beautiful human being to be around.”The good vibes coming out of the Scotland camp extend beyond McMullen, with the squad as a whole feeding off their strong string of results in the World Cricket League Division 2, which saw them automatically qualify for this event, and a preparation period that included a training camp and playing in a domestic T20 tournament in West Indies. Against the backdrop of their own reckoning with racism, Scottish cricket has not had a smooth ride over the last few months, but their performance at this campaign has given them reason to believe they can go one step further. They have four points to their name and two matches left to play, which means they could reach eight points. Both Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka could end up on the same number, which will bring net run rate into play in the final calculation. For now, as Berrington said, Scotland just want to acknowledge “the importance of every game,” and be “clear in our plans.”They have already overturned two Full Member sides, Ireland and West Indies, and take on a third in Zimbabwe on Tuesday. Watson is confident that even with the home crowd behind them, Zimbabwe are fallible and that Scotland can give them a run for their money. “It shows that we can compete at this level,” Watson said. “Associate cricket is hard. Games like this are a real highlight for us. We see it as a privilege to play in them.”

Tammy Beaumont rides luck to realise her 2005 dream with Ashes Test ton

England opener survived a non-review on 61 to finish second day unbeaten on 100

Valkerie Baynes23-Jun-2023″Just pump your legs fast… and if you have to dive, dive.” That’s all Tammy Beaumont told herself as she sprinted for a second run that would take her to a maiden Test century in the penultimate over of a tough but hugely rewarding day.She had spent a day-and-a-half fielding, mostly at close quarters, as Australia reached a massive first-innings 473 before becoming only the second woman behind Heather Knight, her captain and batting partner for a large part of her knock, to score a hundred in all three international formats.Unbeaten on 100 at the close, Beaumont also had the satisfaction of keeping her side in an Ashes Test that looked to be headed firmly Australia’s way earlier on the second day. And she said she was no stranger to close encounters when big milestones presented themselves.”I think I should have been run out in my first ODI hundred,” Beaumont said. “I should have been run out on 99 hitting it straight to a fielder and running. For me, there was an opportunity there and it was probably the fastest one I ran in the day but hey, who cares? I’m in.”I knew I could get there. I knew it was going to go my end and I had a good chance of getting there. If I don’t dive in then you know I don’t think I’m close. I’m pretty much an idiot, always got grazes on my elbows because I’m always on the floor, but if it’s not tight I don’t dive.”Tammy Beaumont scored her maiden Test century•Getty ImagesBeaumont’s innings, which included a century stand with Knight and an unbroken 67-run partnership for the third wicket with Nat Sciver-Brunt, helped England to 218 for 2 on a batting friendly surface at Trent Bridge with their opener in fine touch, having scored 201 not out in last week’s warm-up match.England still trail by 255 and Beaumont said the end result would ultimately determine where this innings ranked in her international career, which began in 2009 and now spans 210 matches across formats.”It feels pretty good,” said Beaumont, who a year ago lost her place in England’s T20 side for the Commonwealth Games and T20 World Cup. “There were probably moments where I thought I wasn’t going to face enough balls to get there tonight it’s put the team in a good position going into tomorrow so hopefully we can bat long tomorrow and that’s what it’s all about at the minute.”For me, it’s all about whether I contribute to the team so if we win this Test match and we go on to win, I think it will be right up there. Let’s wait and see. It’s great to tick it off and yes, as a kid, I dreamt of scoring an Ashes Test hundred. Pretty much since 2005, that probably has been my goal but as I’ve gone on, for me, it’s about contributing to the team.”

She enjoyed a stroke of luck on 61 when she hit legspinner Alana King into her boot and the ball hooped to Phoebe Litchfield at short leg, but the catch wasn’t awarded and Australia didn’t review.”I knew I hit it, I knew it hit my foot, I didn’t know if it hit the floor as well,” Beaumont said. “But not my decision to make and not mine to overturn or anything like that. I think it’s hard to tell when it hits your foot whether it’s also hit the ground at the same time. So I guess I got lucky with one. But then again, I’ve probably had a couple of unlucky decisions in the last month or so in regional cricket, so I guess the luck came at the right time.”Knight admitted Beaumont “had got away with one” but was impressed with her opener’s performance, which she described as “really powerful”.”I thought, ‘Oh, that’s close.’ I chatted to Tammy in the middle and she was like, ‘Yeah, I was out,'” Knight told Sky Sports. “She’s got tiny feet as well, I don’t know how she’s managed to hit that up. But yeah, obviously they didn’t review it and Tammy got away with one there.”I’m pretty sure she was desperate to get it [her hundred] before the end of play… really proud of her. It’s hard work being out in the field for so long but I think the concentration and the skill level that she showed was outstanding.”Related

Annabel Sutherland, who scored an unbeaten 137 for Australia off the back of another century in a warm-up against England A, made a case for promotion from No.8, although she was happy to slot in wherever required as part of “a pretty solid lineup”.”It’s pretty special,” Sutherland said. “I’m not sure it’s quite sunk in yet. “It’s something you dream of growing up, just to pull on the Baggy Green, but to do that job for the team yesterday and today it was pretty cool and I had great support at the other end. The main thing was just getting in there and spending time out there, that was what was required for the team and I was just happy to play my part.”Tammy and Nat in particular batted exceptionally well but in saying that we created seven or eight chances, so I think given we’re 260 ahead, still well and truly ahead in the game. If we can we can start well tomorrow morning then that’ll put us in good stead and hopefully we can sharpen up a little bit in the field so we can take those chances. You never know, there’s still three days to go and lots of time in the game.”
