Spurs target unreal Dragusin upgrade in "incredible" £29m superstar

There’s no escaping it now: this season has been dreadful for Tottenham Hotspur.

In fact, the one thing preventing it from being a full-blown disaster is the fact that the club have a League Cup semi-final to look forward to.

However, when it comes to their Premier League form, Ange Posetcoglou’s side have been dire, and while some blame must fall at the feet of the manager, he has been dealt a lousy hand in the form of an injury crisis at the back.

So, recent reports linking the club with someone who could solve the manager’s biggest problem and serve as an upgrade on Radu Dragusin should excite fans.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Tottenham are one of around 11 sides interested in Paris Saint-Germain defender Milan Skriniar.

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report claims that Napoli, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Roma, and Atlético Madrid are all keen on the experienced defender.

However, while this level of outside interest is far from ideal for the North Londoners, the good news is that he may not cost an arm and a leg to sign, as the story has revealed that PSG will make him available for around €35m – £29m – next month, and could be willing to go as low as €25m – £21m – in negotiations.

In all, it could be an incredibly complicated transfer to get over the line, but given Skriniar’s ability and experience, it’s one worth pursuing, especially as he’d be an upgrade on Dragusin and help solve Ange’s biggest problem.

How Skriniar compares to Dragusin

So, of all the issues Postecoglou has faced at Spurs this season, the defensive injury crisis has been the most significant.

Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies have all missed a sizable portion of the season thus far, which has meant that 18-year-old Archie Gray and the error-prone Dragusin have had to form a makeshift and rather flimsy centre-back partnership, and now it looks like the latter will be out for a little while as well.

So, in signing a new defender, the club will be addressing, and hopefully solving, the Australian’s most significant pressing this season.

Moreover, if the centre-back they sign ends up being Skriniar, then that would also see Dragusin fall further down the pecking order, as while he’s had some decent performances, he’s also had too many dire ones.

For example, he picked up a red card on his European debut for the side, gifted Victor Osimhen a goal against Galatasaray and looked utterly clueless against Rangers.

However, the “incredible” PSG gem, as dubbed by journalist Jerry Mancini, would be a brilliant addition to the squad in his own right and not just as an upgrade on the Romanian.

For example, he has bags and bags of experience, making 246 appearances for Inter Milan and winning the league in Italy and France while also making 77 appearances for Slovakia.

Moreover, on top of being a 6 foot 2 titan who certainly wouldn’t be bullied in the Premier League, he’s no slouch with the ball at his feet, as FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe’s top five leagues, places him in the top 1% of centre-backs for passes attempted and passes completed, per 90.

Ultimately, Spurs are in desperate need of new defenders, as not only are their starting centre-backs seemingly injury-prone, but their replacements aren’t good enough.

Therefore, the North Londoners should do all they can to sign Skriniar next month, as he’d be the perfect solution to this problem.

Pep must ruthlessly drop Gundogan to unleash Man City’s "ridiculous" star

Manchester City return from the international break this evening as they prepare to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League at The Etihad.

Pep Guardiola has had two weeks to formulate a plan to turn his side’s fortunes around after they went into the last international break of the year off the back of four defeats in succession.

One of those losses came at the hands of Spurs, at their ground, in a 2-1 win for Ange Postecoglou’s team in the League Cup, thanks to goals from Pape Matar Sarr and Timo Werner.

Pep Guardiola for Barcelona.

The Cityzens have also lost their last two matches in the Premier League, against Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion, and find themselves five points behind Liverpool in the race for the title.

Matt O’Riley’s winning goal off the bench for Brighton last time out, five minutes after Joao Pedro had equalised for the hosts, was the most recent blow for City.

They have now had two weeks to prepare for this clash with Tottenham and look set to have some of their stars back and available for selection.

The latest Manchester City team news

Jack Grealish, Ruben Dias, Oscar Bobb, Rodri, and John Stones were all absent from the squad for the 2-1 defeat to Brighton last time out, with two of them now set to return against Spurs.

The Standard have reported that Grealish and Stones have both been pictured in training for Manchester City this week, which is set to provide Guardiola with a boost at both ends of the pitch.

With Dias also out, the manager turned to academy graduate Jahmai Simpson-Pusey from the start against Brighton and the youngster lost three of his four aerial duels in the defeat.

As you can see in the table above, Stones has been a dominant force at the back when available in the Premier League and could come in to improve City’s defence this weekend.

Meanwhile, Grealish, who has created 15 chances in seven Premier League games this season, could return to provide competition to Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes on the left flank.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The Standard also stated that Kevin de Bruyne has been in training with the Cityzens and Guardiola must now ruthlessly ditch Ilkay Gundogan from the starting XI to make space for the Belgian star.

Why Ilkay Gundogan should be dropped

Firstly, the 34-year-old central midfielder played 72 minutes of the defeat to Brighton and failed to offer much to the team at the top end of the pitch.

He was reliable enough with the ball at his feet, completing 93% of his attempted passes, but did not provide any creativity or quality to open up the Brighton defence. The German whiz ended the match with zero key passes and zero ‘big chances’ created for his teammates.

ilkay-gundogan-transfer-gossip-josh-brownhill-burnley-leeds-united-farke

Gundogan’s struggles in the final third have been constant since his return to Manchester City on a free transfer from Barcelona in the summer transfer window, as he has failed to get back to the kind of performances he displayed in the past for the club.

The veteran midfielder has scored 61 goals and provided 39 assists in 319 appearances in all competitions for the Cityzens, but has only produced one goal and one assist in 15 outings since his return.

As you can see in the table above, Gundogan is yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League this season and has not created a single ‘big chance’ for his teammates.

This suggests that the former Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona star has not provided a consistent threat in the final third from a midfield position for City, which they have needed when you consider that they have failed to score more than one goal in each of their last three matches in the top-flight.

Therefore, Gundogan should be ruthlessly dropped down to the bench for this clash with Tottenham to provide another player with a chance to shine.

The player Guardiola should replace Gundogan with

Guardiola must unleash de Bruyne from the start against Spurs, in place of the German midfielder, to provide his quality at the top end of the pitch.

The Belgium international, whose footballing brain was described as “ridiculous” by Thierry Henry, made his return from injury by coming off the bench against Sporting and Brighton before the international break, and should now start for the first time.

De Bruyne, who has scored 103 goals and provided 171 assists in 390 games for City, is a midfielder who can consistently impact games in the final third at the top level.

The 33-year-old star scored four goals and created a staggering 21 ‘big chances’ in just 15 starts in the Premier League during the 2023/24 campaign, whilst Gundogan is yet to create any ‘big chances’ in ten league outings this term.

As you can see in the table above, de Bruyne also had a terrific start to the current campaign before his latest injury, with four goals and ‘big chances’ created in just four starts, along with more than twice as many key passes per game in comparison to Gundogan.

To put it simply, the Belgian magician is a world-class creative talent who has consistently proven his ability to make things happen in the final third for City, particularly at Premier League level, and that is why he should be brought back into the XI.

He has had two substitute appearances and an extra two weeks of training without any competitive matches to get himself in a position to start, and Guardiola must unleash him ahead of Gundogan at The Etihad against Spurs this evening.

INEOS send Man Utd scouts to watch teenager who plays like Kobbie Mainoo

INEOS have sent Manchester United scouts to watch a hugely in-demand young player, according to a recent report. The Red Devils enjoyed their first Premier League game at Old Trafford under new head coach Ruben Amorim on Sunday, as they cruised to a 4-0 win over Everton. It has been a good week for United, as Amorim continues to get to grips with his new squad.

Manchester United’s unbeaten run continued under the reign of Ruben Amorim.

ByMatt Dawson Dec 1, 2024 Man Utd transfer news

Amorim will get to know his players very well over the coming weeks, as United play every three to four days in various competitions. However, as any new manager or head coach does, he may already know which players are not going to be part of his team going forward and have replacements in mind.

Midfielder Christian Eriksen looks set to leave Old Trafford at the end of this season. The Denmark international is out of contract at the end of this campaign, and as things stand, he will not be offered a new deal and therefore will be allowed to leave for nothing, as the Man United boss targets two new midfield signings.

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Amorim has requested that United look to sign Patrick Dorgu from Leece in the January transfer window. It has been stated that signing a left-back is a priority for the Red Devils, and Dorgu could be that addition in the New Year.

INEOS send Man Utd scouts to watch Valentin Atangana

According to Alan Nixon, relayed by Inside Futbol, Manchester United had scouts present to watch Reims midfielder Valentin Atangana in action last week. As previously mentioned, signing a midfielder or two is on United’s radar, as Eriksen looks set to leave soon and there is still talk of an exit for Casemiro in the summer.

Atangana is 19 years old and has come through the ranks at Reims, playing 35 times for the first team over two and a half seasons. The French under-21 international has started all 13 league games he has played in Ligue 1 in this campaign but has yet to find the back of the net or register an assist.

The midfielder is not being watched just by United, as there are also many other Premier League teams keeping an eye on his situation. Teams such as Brentford, Liverpool, Everton, and Aston Villa are also tracking the player and have had scouts tracking him as well.

Interestingly, When looking at Fbref’s comparison tool, which evaluates players based on key statistical metrics, Atangana is very similar to United’s own Kobbie Mainoo.

No change to Law governing the bouncer, says MCC following consultation

Marylebone Cricket Club has opted not to make any alterations to the existing Laws governing the use of bouncers, after reaching the conclusion that to do so would cause too great a change to the way the game is played.MCC, the custodians of the Laws of Cricket, recently commissioned a global consultation into short-pitched bowling in response to growing concerns about the dangers of concussion in sport. In 2014, the Australian batter, Phil Hughes, died after being struck on the back of the neck by a short ball during a Sheffield Shield fixture for New South Wales, while more recently, the Derbyshire wicketkeeper Harvey Hosein was forced to retire at the age of 25 after suffering a series of concussions. The Victoria batter, Will Pucovski, is also facing “hard questions” about his own future in the game, following 11 career concussions. However, in a statement, MCC said that it would focus its efforts on educating players about the dangers of concussion, but would stop short of instigating any Law changes.Instead, the onus will be on umpires to make greater use of the existing Law 41.6, which permits them to call a no-ball in the first instance, and withdraw the bowler from the attack thereafter, to protect lower-order batters from “dangerous” bowling. The provisions of the Law permit the umpire to take “into consideration the skill of the striker, by their speed, length, height, and direction they are likely to inflict physical injury.”Such a scenario could, in theory, have applied at Lord’s last summer, where England’s No.11, James Anderson, was subjected to a ten-ball over featuring numerous short balls. Under the existing interpretation of the Laws, only balls above head-height are deemed to be no-balls.”The results of the consultation show that short-pitched bowling, within the Laws, is an important part of the makeup of the sport and in fact, to change it would materially change the game,” Jamie Cox, MCC’s Assistant Secretary for Cricket and Operations, said.”Given that the Laws allow for umpires to intervene should they believe that there is a safety consideration with the batter on strike, we encourage them to use their discretion and ensure that any risk of injury is minimised,” Cox added. “We will also continue to educate players and officials about the risks of concussion.”

Tour in doubt as Hope, Hosein and Greaves among five more positive for Covid-19 in West Indies camp

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Dec-2021West Indies’ ongoing tour of Pakistan has been cast into doubt with five more members of the touring party testing positive for Covid-19. The five include players Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, and Justin Greaves, along with assistant coach Roddy Estwick and team physician Dr Akshai Mansingh.Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed that all three players will be unavailable for the remaining games – one T20I on Thursday and three ODIs – and that all five members who tested positive will remain in isolation for 10 days. They will not be allowed to join the main group until they return negative tests. Once all remaining members of the touring party have been tested again, CWI and PCB officials will meet to determine if the tour can continue.Related

Shadab's all-round display seals Pakistan's series win

With Sheldon Cottrell, Roston Chase and Kyle Mayers having already been ruled out due to positive Covid-19 tests earlier, and a finger injury to Devon Thomas (sustained during the first T20I), the West Indies are now short of six players, raising questions over the viability of the tour continuing. That leaves the tourists with only 14 available players to choose from in their T20I and ODI squads, with the batting particularly hard hit. Only Nicholas Pooran, Brandon King, Shamarh Brooks and Darren Bravo remain available among specialist batters.Cottrell, Chase and Mayers had returned positive results in the initial tests that were done after the team’s arrival in Karachi on December 9. The trio missed both the T20Is that have been played so far, with Pakistan taking a series-winning 2-0 lead after winning both. The third T20I is scheduled for Thursday, December 16.West Indies were already without many of their senior players for the tour, due to rest, injuries or personal reasons, with none of Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder, Evin Lewis or Fabian Allen available.

Goldbridge thinks it’s "stupid": Man Utd could hire perfect Ten Hag upgrade

And so it remains quiet. Manchester United’s executive committee have held talks, but as yet, there are no suggestions that Erik ten Hag is set to join the ever-growing list of managers to have faced the axe in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

There was so much progress in year one, a third-place finish and a Carabao Cup success, with Alejandro Garnacho emerging and Marcus Rashford looking reborn after netting 30 times in all competitions. Were United coming back?

No, frankly, is the answer to that question, with year two providing a car crash of a campaign, resulting in the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish. A triumph at Wembley, however, served as a more than adequate sticking plaster and a reminder of what the Dutchman could achieve in the dugout.

The 54-year-old had cried injuries last season – and rightly so – but after another summer of heavy spending and with largely a fully fit squad at his disposal, the excuses have run dry. There is nowhere left to turn.

This is Ten Hag’s team, and on current evidence, it simply isn’t a very good one. The Red Devils find themselves languishing in 14th after their poorest start to a Premier League season. The records just keep tumbling.

A week of chaos in Porto but relative calm at Villa Park has provided more confusion than clarity over the former Ajax man’s future. Now the question remains as to how many United execs does it take to change a lightbulb? Or sorry, rather how many United execs does it take to change a manager?

Man Utd's manager search

Is it Sir Jim Ratcliffe? Is it Omar Berrada? Is it Dan Ashworth? Quite who will be the man to pull the trigger at Old Trafford remains to be seen, with the club’s new boardroom gaggle now facing a pivotal week to contemplate just what to do with their floundering manager and his team.

Man Utd execs – Ashworth, Ratcliffe, Berrada

If recent reports are to be believed, candidates are already being lined up, with Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst reporting earlier this week that out-of-work boss, Thomas Tuchel, is under consideration.

That has been backed up by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, who also threw another contender into the mix who is already operating in the Premier League – Thomas Frank.

It is believed that the Brentford boss has ‘admirers’ at the Theatre of Dreams and could come into the equation, having also been linked with the Chelsea vacancy over the summer, prior to Enzo Maresca’s appointment.

Thomas Frank's record vs Ten Hag

On the face of it, there may be those who would see the hiring of the Dane as rather uninspiring, considering that he has only thus far managed Brondby and the Bees at senior level.

Vocal United content creator, Mark Goldbridge, is among those to have voiced his opposition to the 51-year-old in recent times, as he stated that the club wouldn’t be that “stupid” to turn to a manager who “thrives on 30% possession and counters.”

In truth, it would be stupid not to consider Frank amid the work he has done in the capital in recent years, having steered Brentford into the top flight and kept them there with relative ease for three seasons.

He may not be a glamorous name – nor play the tippy tappy type of football of the likes of Maresca, as Goldbridge alluded to – but boy is Frank’s approach effective. As shown above, he’s also not one to mince his words…

Ten Hag himself has no doubt come unstuck against the west Londoners in recent years, memorably seeing his side ship four goals at the Gtech Community Stadium back in August 2022, as the rampant hosts piled the pressure on the new United boss.

United did win the next two meetings between the two sides, although it took a desperate double from Scott McTominay last October at the death to seal a 2-1 triumph.

That was followed by a 1-1 draw in March in which the Red Devils were simply overrun, even despite taking an initial lead through Mason Mount, with the home side attempting 31 shots to United’s 11, while their xG of 3.29 was also far ahead of the visitors 0.59, as per Sofascore.

Yes, Frank’s methods may not be conventional, but he has found a way of playing that can prove almost unplayable, as indicated by his side’s quick starts so far this season, having scored inside the first minute in three successive league games, prior to last weekend.

With Brentford also currently ahead of United in the table – despite Ten Hag’s £600m spend over the last two years or so – it provides further evidence of what Frank can do and just why he could represent an upgrade on the under-fire Dutchman.

With Ten Hag seemingly possessing “no playing style” – as per his compatriot, Rene Meulensteen – the former Denmark youth coach would, at the very least, arrive with a plan in mind.

Such an appointment may not go down well with everyone – including the likes of Goldbridge – but having consistently gone down the route of high profile managers, perhaps a final roll of the dice is needed with someone who has proven his worth in the Premier League already.

After an incredibly tough month of fixtures that saw Arsenal take on Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Atalanta and Manchester City, all away from home, the Gunners are now faced with what should be an altogether more straightforward task: a League Cup home tie against Bolton Wanderers.

Now, Mikel Arteta will undoubtedly approach the match with the same level of respect he does for every game, but due to the opposition’s level, he must use it as an opportunity to rest a number of his players who ran themselves into the ground on Sunday evening.

Fortunately, it looks like he will, as 16-year-old goalkeeper Jack Porter, who became the youngest keeper in Champions League history when he made the bench against Atalanta on Thursday, is set to start. The team should also include the sensational Ethan Nwaneri and another of the Gunners’ most promising youngsters, who made quite an entrance on Sunday.

Why Nwaneri should start

So, there are a couple of reasons why Arteta should look to hand Nwaneri his first competitive start for Arsenal this evening, and the first is simply down to necessity.

Martin Odegaard is still out with the ankle injury he picked up on international duty, Leandro Trossard is suspended due to his second yellow card against City on the weekend, and the player who probably would have stepped in last season, Fabio Vieira, is currently on loan with previous club Porto.

Moreover, Kai Havertz will either start up top or, more likely, be rested, meaning the manager has only one option: hand the sensationally gifted 17-year-old his full debut for the club.

That said, the second reason is that, regardless of the squad situation, the Enfield-born gem would be deserving of a start purely off the back of his form for the youth sides, his cameo against Spurs and the displays he put in during preseason.

For example, the “true goalscorer”, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, has racked up a seriously impressive haul of 27 goals and ten assists in just 52 appearances for the club’s various youth sides, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 1.40 games, primarily from attacking midfield.

Moreover, when he came off the bench towards the end of the North London Derby, he looked utterly unfazed by the magnitude of the game and the intensity of the rivalry, which suggests that he’d be completely fine starting a home game against third-tier opposition, even alongside another Hale End graduate.

Why Myles Lewis-Skelly should start

Yes, while Arsenal are blessed with an abundance of talented youth players, as the fans saw during the preseason tour, the one who should be guaranteed a place in the starting lineup tonight is 17-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly.

If the Islington-born gem is in the XI this evening, then it’ll come as no surprise to the fans that watched Sunday’s clash with City, as when Jurrien Timber went down with cramp in the 92nd minute, instead of moving Declan Rice into the backline and throwing on Jorginho for some more big game experience, he turned to the Hale End graduate and threw him into the deep end.

Moreover, the Spaniard did so despite the exciting prospect already picking up a yellow card on the sideline for giving instructions to David Raya and then getting into an argument with Erling Haaland, which just shows that even at his age, the “unbelievable” gem as dubbed by podcaster Will Balsam, isn’t phased by anything.

However, it’s not just his incredible mentality and willingness to throw himself into intense situations that warrant his inclusion from the start tonight; it’s also his technical ability and positional versatility.

For example, while he played in central and defensive midfield roles in the academy, driving forward with the ball with purpose (video below), Arteta has primarily used him as cover for left-back, which is likely where he will start tonight with both Timber and Riccardo Calafiori coming off on Sunday.

Ultimately, while it’s a big step-up for the pair of them, Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly should be handed their full Arsenal debut this evening alongside Porter, and if they can keep up the form they have shown in their cameos, the fans will be in for a treat.

Arteta must axe Martinelli and start "unbelievable" Arsenal ace instead

The sensational star needs game time.
