CSA director of cricket wants to “ask some hard questions of Australia and challenge them” for postponed tour
Firdose Moonda24-Feb-2021South Africa are hopeful of playing against India “a number of times” in the next cycle of bilateral series, and several exchanges between the two sides are on the verge of being signed off, according to Cricket South Africa’s director of cricket, Graeme Smith.Speaking on TV commentary during the domestic T20 cup, Smith outlined a busy international programme after this year’s IPL, while continuing to acknowledge the fallout from the indefinitely postponed three-Test series against Australia, which was scheduled for March.”Myself and Sourav [Ganguly, the BCCI president] go a long way back and we’ve had a number of conversations,” Smith said. “India have been very supportive of us. Hopefully, in the next cycle we will have a number of tours against India that are actually pretty close to being finalised.Related
Relations between CSA and CA 'strained', admits Smith
Ireland to host South Africa for ODI, T20I series in July
SA likely to re-engage Kallis in batting consultancy role
“Tom Harrison and the ECB have been brilliant as well. Even the handling of the England situation [when England left South Africa in December without playing three ODIs on their white-ball tour] was good. That has already been rescheduled. There has been a joint resolution and understanding of that.”But Australia have been the one that has stood out in terms of the difficulties, and we never found the same sense of working together as we did with the others. We’ve also got to ask some hard questions of them and challenge them as well. That’s important for world cricket.”CSA has lodged a formal complaint with the ICC, asking the game’s global governing body’s dispute resolution committee to consider whether Australia’s decision not to tour South Africa constituted unacceptable non-compliance of the FTP and the World Test Championship terms. “Even if we don’t win that – because I don’t think there is any precedent for it – the message is loud and clear,” Smith said. That message is multifold as South Africa seek financial compensation, assurances that countries would be obliged to fulfil their fixtures and not unilaterally pull out, to avoid the big three of India, England and Australia monopolising the international calendar, and for all ICC members to work together to get as much cricket played as possible.
“Our teams are going to be very busy post IPL to build up to the T20 World Cup and identify the right squad”Graeme Smith
“Each country is facing different challenges. It’s important that the members get together and support each other, and try and find ways to get as much done as we can,” Smith said. “That added to the disappointment of Australia. So far, everyone we have worked with has had that mindset and understood that, and my sense is that Australia didn’t. That’s what let us down. You work with members to try and find the safest way to get cricket played. It’s become a collaborative approach with the medical teams and operations teams and how finances will work.”South Africa were to play India in March 2020, but had to return home after only one ODI of a three-match series, as countries around the world went into lockdown because of Covid-19. But they are scheduled to host India for three Tests in the 2021-22 summer.Smith further said that India apart, South Africa are currently in talks with West Indies and Sri Lanka to play winter tours in those countries before the T20 World Cup. “Our teams are going to be very busy post IPL to build up to the T20 World Cup and identify the right squad,” he said. Before the IPL, South Africa would be hosting Pakistan for three ODIs and four T20Is between April 2 and 16, with Smith hoping that spectators would be allowed into grounds to send off this summer on a celebratory note. “We are working closely with the government. When Pakistan come, we’d love to have some element of fans in the stadium,” he said.South Africa are currently on Level 3 of a five-stage lockdown – with Level 5 being the strictest – and most sectors of the economy are open. Current restrictions include an 11pm curfew and a ban on fans in stadiums but with the Covid-19 infection rate declining, there is a possibility that by April, there will be a further easing of measures to stop the spread of Covid-19.The ongoing domestic T20 tournament is being played behind closed doors and in a bio-secure environment in Durban, but the concluding stages of the first-class competition – which will take place next month – will not be played in a bubble. That may be an indication that conditions are becoming safer for playing sport at multiple locations and with fewer limits on player movements. All nationally contracted players are obliged to make themselves available for these domestic matches as South Africa aim to accelerate their rebuilding process. “The goal is to get cricket played, to get ourselves moving forward,” Smith said. “We do need to improve our cricket standards, so these are an important four to five weeks of cricket for us.”

"The ambassadorial role, I don't know in depth the situation, but it doesn't matter why, it doesn't matter what, Sir Alex has the most important thing of all, the love and respect of every Manchester United fan around the world. More important than any role, or a few pounds he doesn't need… The most important thing is the love and respect every fan has for him."

West Ham United travel to Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon and David Moyes will be well aware that failing to win will end the fading chances of qualifying for a fourth successive season in European competition.
The Hammers know that, in all likelihood, they won't be continuing their sparkling continental journey next season but there is no doubt that the playing squad boasts enough firepower to maintain a position of promise in the English top flight over the coming years, despite the lingering situation surrounding Moyes' future at the London Stadium.
Moyes, 61 years old, is out of contract in a matter of weeks and after winning the Conference League last season, he has dealt with the departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal to propel his side back into the top half of the league table.
Despite this, he can't seem to shake the negativity pervading from prominent supporter circles that have made their voluble opinions known that he should part ways with the side this summer, largely down to his perceived conservative style of football.
Still, West Ham are usually well drilled, disciplined and oiled to get the job done, and given that they have already won away to Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal in the Premier League this season, they will be confident Stamford Bridge can be added to the collection tomorrow.
West Ham team news
West Ham could welcome Konstantinos Mavropanos back to the matchday squad in west London after the Greek international's absence over the past three matches due to injury.
However, Sunday's game comes too soon for Nayef Aguerd, meaning veteran Angelo Ogbonna will partner captain Kurt Zouma in central defence once again if Mavropanos is not ready to play from the outset.
West Ham manager David Moyes.
Chelsea might have impressed during their midweek victory over Spurs but the hosts are battling a catalogue of injury issues and Moyes might spy a chink in the armour to exploit, with the majority of his team fit and raring to go.
That doesn't mean he won't make a tweak or two though, with Chelsea's recent performance possibly giving the Scotsman food for thought when it comes to Vladimir Coufal, and whether he should start at Stamford Bridge.
Vladimir Coufal's season in numbers
Coufal has been an excellent addition to Moyes' West Ham side, joining from Czech outfit Slavia Prague in a £5m transfer in 2020 and amassing 152 appearances, supplying 20 assists for his teammates.
This season, as per Sofascore, the defender has started 33 Premier League matches and racked up seven assists, averaging 0.9 key passes, 1.8 tackles, 2.4 clearances and 3 out of 9 successful duels per game.
He might not be in the finest form right now but Coufal does have his strengths, ranking among the top 18% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for assists, the top 10% for clearances and the top 21% for aerial duels won per 90, as per FBref.
But the 31-year-old's certain lack of mobility will impede his and his side's chances of victory at a pivotal moment and Moyes must consider dropping him.
Why West Ham must bench Vladimir Coufal
Coufal was rag-dolled when Newcastle United defeated West Ham several weeks back, branded with a 4/10 match rating by The Evening Standard's Malik Ouzia, brutally exposed by the pace and power of Anthony Gordon.
What does that tell us? It tells us a lot. Coufal has been dribbled past five times across his past two matches in the Premier League, against Crystal Palace and Liverpool, shipping seven goals during this timeframe and losing possession 31 times – 15 times against the Eagles and 16 times against Liverpool.
Chelsea are an imperfect team but they are filled with talent and have a range of tools that can inflict damage onto the Hammers. They create chances and they stretch the opposition with their wide pace and swift overloads. Coufal will suffer.
Mykhaylo Mudryk has certainly had his detractors since joining Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in a £88.5m transfer back in January 2023, but he has been in promising form recently and has started six of the past seven matches in the Premier League, showcasing his skills superbly last time out.

His athleticism and breakneck speed will cause Coufal so many problems, and so Ben Johnson – who is approaching the end of his West Ham career, out of contract this summer and rumoured to be heading to Crystal Palace on a free transfer – must start in his stead.
Johnson's starting roles have arrived intermittently this season, starting only four games in the Premier League, but the 24-year-old's pace and ground-covering style make him the perfect Irons player to attempt to deal with Mudryk, who has an immense natural talent but hasn't gelled it all together with constancy at Chelsea yet.
Next West Ham manager: Who could replace David Moyes?
Julen Lopetegui appears to have taken a step closer to becoming the new Hammers boss…
ByStephan Georgiou May 6, 2024
While Chelsea are looking to string together some impressive late-season form, West Ham have plenty of tools to cause an upset and Johnson must be unleashed to ensure that the best chance of victory is placed.
Chelsea will be fighting to secure a top six finish in the Premier League by the end of this week as they prepare for their last two matches of the season.
The Blues travel away from Stamford Bridge to take on Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday night before playing host to Bournemouth at the weekend.
Mauricio Pochettino's side are currently level on points with Newcastle United in sixth, but below them on goal difference, and will be looking to overtake them over the next six days.
Chelsea could still, therefore, secure Europa League, instead of the Europa Conference League, football for the 2024/25 campaign with a strong end to the term.
However, the focus behind the scenes may already be on what they could do in the upcoming summer transfer window to bolster the playing squad.
In fact, Chelsea were linked with an interest in a former Premier League magician earlier this month, and he could come in to replace Noni Madueke as a starter next season.
Chelsea's interest in Barcelona star
It was recently reported by Graeme Bailey that the Blues are one of a number of clubs who have been alerted to the potential availability of Barcelona star Raphinha this summer.
The outlet claimed that Chelsea and West Ham have both shown previous interest in the Brazil international and have now had it made clear to them that he could be on the market this time around, although it remains to be seen whether or not either team will come in with a firm offer for the winger.
It was also revealed that Newcastle United, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, and Arsenal are also interested in the former Leeds United whiz.
They have all been spoken to about his status heading into the summer transfer window and have shown some interest in signing the left-footed dynamo.
Barcelona star Raphinha.
The report claimed that he is set to be available for a move as Barcelona are looking to raise funds to make new additions of their own for Xavi's squad.
It also added that the Spanish giants will hope to make a tiny profit on the £50m that they splashed out to sign him from Leeds in the summer of 2022. However, no exact figure was mentioned so it remains to be seen how much Chelsea would need to pay to land the attacker.
If Todd Boehly and his team can get a deal over the line for the Brazil international, ahead of their Premier League rivals, then Pochettino could boldly ditch Madueke from his starting XI, despite the talented gem's recent form for the Blues.
Noni Madueke's Premier League form this season
The young ace is another left-footed winger who mainly operates down the right flank, like Raphinha, and it is, therefore, his position that would be under threat if the Barcelona wizard arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer.
He has been in impressive form in recent weeks and has been a regular starter for Pochettino of late, with eight straight starts in all competitions.
Madueke has racked up three goals and two assists in his last seven Premier League appearances, having managed two goals and zero assists in his last 14 matches in the division this term.

As you can see in the table above, the England U21 international has been directly involved in seven goals in 21 league games so far this season, which is not an outstanding return.
He has only created one chance per game on average for his teammates and, bar his recent run of form, has not offered a consistent threat as a scorer or a creator of goals in the top-flight.
At the age of 22, Madueke still has plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and improve over the years to come but Chelsea could land an instant upgrade on him by swooping for Raphinha.
That would leave the former PSV wizard as a back-up for that role on the right side of the attack, or at least needing to fight for his place in the XI, or it could force him to consider his short-term future with the London giants.
Why Raphinha could replace Noni Madueke
Raphinha could replace Madueke on the right wing for Chelsea as he is an experienced and proven top-level winger who has showcased his ability to make a big impact in the final third on a regular basis in Spain and in England.
During his time with Leeds, the Brazil international produced 17 goals, 12 assists, and 22 'big chances' created in 65 Premier League matches, which earned him a move to the Nou Camp.
Former Leeds star Raphinha.
This shows that the left-footed star has already proven that he has what it takes to perform consistently in the English top-flight, with an impressive stream of goals and assists.
He would, therefore, be less of a risk to sign than, for example, a player coming in from another league with no prior experience of football in the Premier League, or England at all.
Raphinha, whose crossing with both feet was hailed as "dangerous" by Xavi, then hit the ground running in LaLiga with an eye-catching return of seven goals scored, seven assists, and 17 'big chances' created in 25 starts during the 2022/23 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the 27-year-old sensation has significantly outperformed Madueke at league level this term, with over four times as many assists and over five times as many 'big chances' created, with the same number of goals.
This suggests that they both offer a similar goal threat but the Barcelona maestro would create considerably more for his teammates if he arrives at Stamford Bridge.
The £207k-per-week star, who was once dubbed a "magician" by former teammate Dan James, could be a fantastic signing to bolster the Blues attack, which is why Pochettino and Boehly should swoop to secure his services this summer.
Couple his current form in comparison to Madueke with his history of being a lethal performer in the Premier League and the evidence is there to suggest that the manager could boldly ditch the English forward for Raphinha next term.
