He’s worth £16m: Rangers missed a big jackpot with player who left in 2017

Glasgow Rangers enjoyed a fairly successful end to the summer transfer window as they managed to get two deals over the line before the deadline.

22-year-old, versatile, defender Neraysho Kasanwirjo arrived on a season-long loan from Feyenoord and attacking midfielder Nedim Bajrami signed on a permanent basis from Sassuolo.

However, they did fail to bring in the winger that they wanted to add to the squad. They were keen on a deal to sign Sam Edozie on loan from Premier League side Southampton, but balked at their £1m loan fee demand on deadline day.

The Light Blues ended the summer transfer window with 11 fresh faces, including Jefte, Liam Kelly, Mohammed Diomande, Oscar Cortes, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron, Vaclav Cerny, Hamza Igamane, and Robin Propper joining alongside Kasanwirjo and Bajrami.

Seven of those players are under the age of 23 and this suggests that the Gers are looking to bring in young talent who they can then develop and sell on for profit in the future, as they did in the past with the likes of Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey.

The hope will be that Philippe Clement can improve them, whilst still competing for silverware, over the coming month and years to create assets for the club.

Calvin Bassey

One player who could have developed into a huge asset for Rangers was central midfielder Billy Gilmour, who the Gers missed out on hitting the jackpot with.

How much money Rangers received for Billy Gilmour

The Scottish whiz came up through the ranks at Ibrox and played for his country at U15 and U16 level before being snapped up by Premier League side Chelsea in 2017.

He joined the Light Blues in 2009, at the age of 8, and spent eight years in the academy. His performances at youth level for club and country were enough to convince the English giants to swoop for him ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

As Gilmour was not old enough to have signed a professional contract Rangers, at the age of 15, Chelsea did not have to agree a normal transfer fee for his services.

Instead, they were able to sign the central midfielder and then agree a development fee, which Sky Sports reported to be an initial £500k for the teenage star, who had trained with the first-team already in Glasgow.

It was reported that then-Rangers head coach Pedro Caixinha, who had called him up for first-team training, attempted to convince the young starlet to remain at Ibrox, but the 15-year-old wanted to move to the Premier League to test his luck with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Due to the age at which he moved on from the Gers, the Scottish Premiership giants were not able to extract maximum value from his services, as shown by how his career has developed in recent seasons.

Billy Gilmour's time with Chelsea

The talented midfielder initially linked up with their U18 side and produced eight goals and three assists in 26 appearances before being moved up to the U23s.

Gilmour then racked up eight goals and ten assists in 40 outings for the U23s and earned himself a chance to showcase his skills in the first-team.

Former Norwich midfielder Billy Gilmour.

The Scotland international went on to play 22 first-team matches for Chelsea, 11 of which came in the 2020/21 campaign and two of which came in the Champions League – the season they beat Manchester City in the final.

Chelsea then allowed the midfield prospect to spend the 2021/22 season on loan with Norwich City, who had just been promoted to the top-flight.

As you can see in the table above, it was a character-building year for Gilmour as he struggled in the middle of the park for the Canaries, who were eventually relegated from the division.

However, his struggles – losing over half his duels and almost being dribbled past twice per game on average – did not stop Brighton from swooping to sign him for £9m in the summer of 2022.

That move, after less than 50 games of senior club football, showed that Rangers missed out on a huge talent when they lost him at the age of 15 for just £500k, and his latest move has emphasised that point further.

The deal Napoli have agreed for Billy Gilmour

The Scotland international secured a high-profile move away from the AMEX on deadline day to join Italian giants Napoli on a permanent deal.

It was reported that Antonio Conte's side have agreed an initial fee of £12m that could rise to £16m for the central midfielder, and that they had an offer of £8m turned down earlier in the summer transfer window.

Brighton midfielder Billy Gilmour.

Gilmour made 60 first-team appearances for Brighton in his two seasons on the south coast in England, providing four assists but failing to score, and was described as a "popular" figure by technical director David Weir.

30 of those outings came in the Premier League under Roberto De Zerbi during the 2023/23 campaign, as he emerged as a regular fixture in the middle of the park.

As you can see in the table above, Gilmour was dribbled past less than once per game on average, which is a huge improvement on his form for Norwich in the 2021/22 season.

The Scottish metronome was also an incredibly reliable operator in possession, as shown by his 92% pass accuracy, and his form convinced Napoli to pay up to £16m for him.

Overall, Rangers missed out on hitting the jackpot with Gilmour because a player they once lost for £500k is now worth up to £16m, a value rise of a whopping 3,100%.

It would be harsh to blame the Light Blues for their part in it, as there was little they could do to stop him moving on before he coudl sign a professional deal, but it is still a sour one for the Scottish giants all the same.

‘It has to stop’ – Jamie Carragher calls for bans to be introduced after awful David Raya moment in Arsenal’s win over Crystal Palace

Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 5-1Raya mistake nearly proves costlyCarragher wants certain keeper trend bannedFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

During Arsenal's 5-1 win at Selhurst Park on Saturday, keeper Raya put his team in all sorts of trouble when he passed the ball to a backtracking Thomas Partey. Palace won possession in the away team's box but the Gunners got away with it. However, ex-defender Carragher says keepers "have to stop" passing to team-mates when they have their back to goal and are under pressure. He exasperately called for a ban on it in the Premier League.

AdvertisementWHAT JAMIE CARRAGHER SAID

He said while commentating on the game for Sky Sports: "This is the worst passing football – playing a straight pass as a goalkeeper. The amount of goals you see conceded in the Premier League like this. It has to stop. Goalkeepers should be banned from playing straight balls. They should be played out wide."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The debate will continue to rage on about teams' insistence on playing out from the back and running the risk of having the ball turned over so high up the pitch. It can be a high-risk, high-reward strategy but perhaps more pragmatism is needed at times. Despite that, Arsenal are three points off Premier League leaders Liverpool – but the Reds do have two games in hand.

Fabrizio Romano: Celtic have now reached agreement to sign 20 y/o on loan

Celtic are believed to have an agreement in place to sign a 20-year-old rising star on loan during the summer transfer window, according to an update from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops are still pushing to complete some late transfer business, with Arne Engels one of the latest players to be linked with a summer move to Parkhead. The FC Augsburg midfielder has reportedly begun talks with Celtic over a switch, as they look to bring him in alongside attacking midfielder Mateusz Bogusz.

The latter, who is currently playing for MLS side Los Angeles FC, is a rumoured target for Brendan Rodgers before the window slams shut later this week, and has some limited experience on British shores, making one Championship appearance during a spell at Leeds United.

Former Leeds midfielder Mateusz Bogusz.

Hammarby teenager Bazoumana Toure is another player who has been backed to bolster the Hoops' options in the Scottish Premiership and Champions League this season, but Crystal Palace, Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverkusen are also thought to be in the mix.

Celtic could also look for reinforcements at the heart of their defence this week, with Sheffield United centre-back Auston Trusty continuing to be looked at as a strong option. He is a two-time capped USA international, and could give Rodgers the extra depth that he may crave in a key area of the pitch.

Celtic reach agreement over loan move

Taking to X, Romano claimed that Celtic are set to complete the loan signing of Barcelona youngster Alex Valle, having signed an extension with the La Liga side. Another update from the reporter also says a medical is scheduled on Monday, although he confirms there will be no buy option included.

Not a huge amount may be known about Valle, given his age and lack of experience, but there should always be an element of excitement when any Barca player is linked with joining the Hoops. The 20-year-old is yet to make an appearance for the senior side, but he has enjoyed 22 outings for their B team, and won a combined tally of 17 caps for Spain at Under-19 and Under-18 level.

A left-back by trade, Valle could increase the competition for places at Celtic, not only putting pressure on Greg Taylor for minutes, but also ensuring that Rodgers has the depth to rotate his squad effectively, giving them the best possible chance of success across all competitions this season.

As for the player himself, he could see this as a wonderful opportunity to experience a different league and culture, allowing him to grow as a footballer over the next 12 months, prior to returning to Barcelona as a more rounded player.

That means the Hoops should hopefully be bringing in a player who is hungry to keep improving, which can only help them, showing his current employers that his contract extension is fully merited.

"Hard to believe" – Sky pundit "surprised" by transfer news out of Chelsea

Sky Sports pundit Terry Gibson has shared his verdict on some transfer news out of Chelsea, which he's described as "hard to believe".

Chelsea make nine summer signings in busy transfer window

Despite already sealing deals for Tosin Adarabioyo (Fulham), Omari Kellyman (Aston Villa), Renato Veiga (FC Basel), Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (Leicester City), Filip Jorgensen (Villarreal), Marc Guiu (Barcelona), Estevao Willian (Palmeiras), Caleb Wiley (Atlanta United) and Aaron Anselmino (Boca Juniors), the Blues appear set to take their tally of new arrivals into double figures.

Chelsea are in ongoing talks to sign goalkeeper Mike Penders from Genk, and it is believed Enzo Maresca is closing in on a move for Gremio wonderkid Gabriel Mec as well, who would be the second Brazilian gem to join in the last few weeks after Estevao.

If these deals get over the line, it will take Todd Boehly and BlueCo up to 11 new arrivals, but a concern for Chelsea supporters will be that the vast majority of these fresh recruits look like ones for the future – rather than senior upgrades to Maresca's first team.

Indeed, only Tosin, Jorgensen and Dewsbury-Hall appear likely to be featuring regularly in the Premier League next season, despite Chelsea's spending now over the £120 million mark.

Some good news for Maresca, though, is that Chelsea now appear set to add another senior signing. According to reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano and other esteemed media sources, Chelsea have now sealed a £35 million deal for Atletico Madrid striker Samu Omorodion, after selling Conor Gallagher to the La Liga side for around £38 million.

Omorodion has been praised for his potential by certain sectors of the press, but the numbers suggest he is unlikely to be a serial goal-getter for Maresca. The 20-year-old, who will represent Spain in the Olympic gold medal final against France tomorrow, scored just nine goals in 36 appearances in all competitions on loan at Deportivo last term.

Terry Gibson "incredibly surprised" by Chelsea signing Omorodion

Given Chelsea are also attempting to sign Victor Osimhen from Napoli, which would see Romelu Lukaku head the other way in a transfer domino, some critics have questioned the club's £35 million capture of Omorodion.

La Liga expert Terry Gibson, speaking to Sky Sports News this week, said Chelsea's signing of Omorodion is surprising and hard to believe, considering just how unproven he is.

"I'm incredibly surprised by this to be honest," said Gibson. "I find it incredible that Chelsea have lumped in straight away, Atletico Madrid paid six million euros for him on the first day of last season, and they're going to sell him for over 30.

"It's a tough one to be honest to call, I don't want to be too critical of a young player, but the increase in his valuation on the back of eight league goals for Alaves where he lost his place at the end of the season is hard to believe."

A lot of the noise coming out of north London in the past fortnight has been centred around Arsenal's ongoing talks over a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, which has dragged on for quite a long time now.

Once, or if, Mikel Arteta sees his compatriot sign for Arsenal before deadline day – the Spaniard may be hoping he can bring in one more forward option. Indeed, a striker has long been viewed by some critics as the final missing piece of the jigsaw at London Colney.

Arsenal were rumoured to hold a serious interest in Ivan Toney as far back as 12 months ago, and have been regularly tipped to move for a striker ever since.

After Toney, Edu was tipped to bid for Victor Osimhen of Napoli, while Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres has also been on Arsenal's radar. Even Dominic Solanke was linked with an Arsenal move, before he opted to join their north London rivals Tottenham for a total fee of around £65 million.

Last season, Kai Havertz impressed in a makeshift centre-forward role, with the German putting himself ahead of Gabriel Jesus in Arteta's pecking order. However, reports suggest that Arsenal are still very much open to the idea of bringing in a new number nine.

Arsenal hold talks with Evanilson agents in search for forward

According to HITC, it is believed FC Porto striker and two-cap Brazil international Evanilson is now turning heads in north London.

Indeed, Arsenal have apparently held talks with Evanilson through his agents, following the 24-year-old's exceptional haul of 25 goals in all competitions for Porto last season.

However, the Gunners are not the only Premier League side registering their interest in Evanilson, as Manchester United, Liverpool, Newcastle United and West Ham have all done the same.

There are two other English sides currently above Arsenal in the race for him as well. Both Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth are the only sides to have formalised their interest in the South American marksman, who is rumoured to command a price tag of around £60 million.

Cooper’s 1st move: Leicester could sign exciting star who dominated England

There has been another twist in the tale involving who will be the next Leicester City manager, as Steve Cooper now looks to be the new frontrunner to replace Enzo Maresca.

It felt almost inevitable at one point that Graham Potter would be occupying the Foxes dug-out next season, but as per football journalist Sami Mokbel, the newly promoted side are edging closer to the former Nottingham Forest boss being their chosen successor for the Italian instead.

There could now be some disappointment in the air at the King Power Stadium from supporters of the Foxes, with Cooper's win percentage in the Premier League standing at a low 21%, but the powers that be at Leicester must have seen something in the Welshman, to make him their next manager for the top-flight season ahead.

Cooper will hope to be backed in the transfer market to help Leicester consolidate themselves in the elite division, as rumours about incomings begin to heat up.

Leicester looking at entertaining Iceland international

According to a recent report in the Sunday Mirror, as relayed by TBR Football, Leicester are keen on adding Iceland international Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson to their ranks this summer, who now could be Cooper's first capture in the Foxes hot seat.

Both Newcastle United and West Ham United are also named as interested parties looking at the OH Leuven winger, who scored against England at Wembley in a 1-0 win for his nation before the Euros kicked off, terrorising Gareth Southgate's shellshocked Three Lions in the process.

Hammering home an early first-half effort past stand-in England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, the new Premier League side could be looking at the Scandinavian gem as a rival for Stephy Mavididi next season, who took the Championship by storm last campaign, with Leicester winning the league title at the end of the 46-game marathon.

What Thorsteinsson could offer Leicester

With no other real recognised left wingers in the Foxes camp right now minus Mavididi, Thorsteinsson signing on the dotted line soon could be a worthwhile capture as Cooper attempts to stamp his mark on his new Leicester team.

archie-gray-stephy-mavididi-leeds-opinion

Last season, playing out in Belgium, the in-demand 25-year-old picked up seven goals and seven assists from 40 clashes in all competitions.

Played through the centre as an attacking midfielder, or down the left wing last season, Thorsteinsson's lively nature – which was evident in the nine duels he went in for against England – was clear for all to see when donning a Leuven strip too, amassing nine yellow cards across those 40 games, as a tireless midfielder with a bite present in his game.

Some way off being as explosive as Mavididi when venturing forward over the last year, as can be seen when comparing the two wingers above, Thorsteinsson will still aim to push his ex-Arsenal counterpart all the way if signed, who managed 19 goal contributions in the second-tier.

Cooper loved hard-working utility figures, like the Icelandic Foxes target, when he was still at the helm at the City Ground, with figures such as Philip Zinckernagel never quite the main man under the Welsh boss at Forest, but he still impressively boasted seven goals and ten assists during the 2021/22 campaign, which ended in the glory of promotion.

Thorsteinsson could be just that for Cooper in the here and now, if he is to take the reins at the King Power shortly, as Leicester embark on a season back in the Premier League very soon.

UCL club want "superb" Rangers player who could face them next month

As Philippe Clement continues his ruthless streak, a Champions League side are now reportedly interested in signing one Rangers player who the Belgian could not find room for last season.

Rangers transfer news

It's already been a busy summer at Ibrox, with several names already shown the exit door upon the expiry of their contracts at the end of last season to make room for arrivals such as Jefte and Oscar Cortes. The likes of John Lundstram, Kemar Roofe and Borna Barisic all left this summer and are now free agents on the hunt for their next club.

Welcoming Cortes back on loan, but this time with an obligation to buy, Rangers will hope to see the winger make the instant impact that some may believe he was on course to make before an untimely injury disrupted his loan spell last season. He returns looking to hand the Gers an attacking boost that one likely departing player failed to offer.

According to Voetbal International (via Sports View), FC Twente now want to sign Sam Lammers from Rangers this summer after the forward impressed on loan at fellow Dutch club FC Utrecht. Twente could take full advantage of Utrecht's reported inability to match Lammers' wage demands to end the forward's nightmare Rangers spell and seal a permanent move in the coming weeks.

If Lammers does complete a move to Twente this summer, it may not be long before he finds himself back in front of the Ibrox faithful, as both Rangers and the Dutch club are competing in Champions League qualifiers. Twente are unseeded and are therefore able to face the Gers in early August.

"Superb" Lammers needs permanent move

Part of Michael Beale's failure, Lammers enjoyed his loan spell away from Scotland and should now complete a permanent move away from Ibrox this summer. The 27-year-old finished with 11 goals and three assists in 20 appearances for an Utrecht side who ended the Eredivisie season in seventh.

A move to Twente would represent a reward for that impressive loan spell given that they finished inside the top three, four places above Utrecht. With such a move, Lammers would arguably be on his way back to where he found himself prior to what has proved to be a nightmare Rangers move.

Earning plenty of praise before that transfer, Heerenveen boss Kees van Wonderen said via Daily Record: "What you get from him as a player is first and foremost a superb work ethic. He's a left-footed striker and is good technically.

"He's a player who has an eye on the tactical aspects of the game, he appreciates how the game is played, where the spaces are and how to deal with circumstances on the pitch. He knows how to play an opponent and is a very clever guy."

Now, Lammers will be hoping to return to that level with a permanent move away from Rangers this summer.

Australian cricket has lost arguably its most capable executive after the former national captain Belinda Clark announced her intention to resign from employment with Cricket Australia. In a major blow to the community cricket department that she has extensively reshaped over the past two and a half years, Clark has chosen to finish up as a CA executive after first making it clear she had no intention of following Kevin Roberts into the role of chief executive. Nick Hockley is currently serving as interim, with a wider search still expected to be undertaken. As one of CA’s most accomplished performers over a long time, Clark held roles managing the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane, as head of junior cricket and then community cricket as a whole. Vitally, she worked as interim head of team performance following the exit of Pat Howard in late 2018, up until Ben Oliver and Drew Ginn were handed joint roles nine months later. This meant that Clark was in charge of the department responsible for the men’s and women’s national teams at the time that included the reintegration of Steven Smith and David Warner after their Newlands scandal bans. It also involved extensive planning for the difficult “double tour” of England for the 2019 World Cup and Ashes series. Australia’s cup campaign made it as far as the semi-finals before the Ashes were retained in a drawn series.”I have loved my time working for the sport and while this chapter is coming to a close after 20 years with CA, a further six years with Cricket New South Wales and a long-standing member of ICC Women’s Committee, I am committed to finding new ways to give back to the game that has given me so much,” Clark said. “The journey has been exciting and rewarding because of the many amazing people I have worked with across the community, State and Territory Associations, and CA.”I am grateful for their support and am so proud of what we have achieved together. “My dream is to help young girls develop the confidence, skills and courage to step forward when leadership opportunities arise. This shift in my focus is timely as we navigate through significant global challenges – many of which need strong local and diverse voices to overcome. Cricket has been a major part of my life since I was a little girl growing up in Newcastle and it will continue to be for many years to come.”Clark, 50, has started her own business, The Leadership Playground, which has been devised to educate and mentor young girls int he fostering of leadership skills between the ages of 10 and 15. CA on Tuesday denied the Clark was exiting the executive role so she could move immediately onto the Board as an independent director later this year. The nominations committee for board appointments is required to find an independent director to replace the outgoing Jacquie Hey, a director since 2012, with the strong preference understood to be for a highly capable female in the role.Cricket New South Wales had earlier made it clear that it intends to nominate the former state premier Mike Baird as a board director, while wanting to see its current director, Richard Freudenstein, retained as an independent on the nine-person board, comprised of six state-nominated directors and three independents including the chairman, Earl Eddings. Clark is currently a director on the organising committee for the Twenty20 World Cup.
