Exclusive: Jemson drops John Terry verdict amid Forest link

Nigel Jemson, the former Nottingham Forest striker, has questioned whether John Terry would be ready to take over at the club if he was approached.

Forest are attempting to find a replacement for Chris Hughton after the club made the decision to sack the manager in midweek after their 2-0 defeat to Middlesbrough.

That result meant that, under Hughton’s management, Forest did not win a game this season, drawing against Derby County and losing the other six fixtures in the Championship.

Terry is on the lookout for his first managerial job after leaving his role as Aston Villa assistant, and he has been linked with a potential move to the City Ground.

The former Chelsea captain spent a total of three years as the assistant to Dean Smith and Jemson believes that the job may be too big a task for him to take on as his first out-and-out role in management.

He said: “People talk about John Terry. Is it too big a challenge for his first job? He’s got to start somewhere, obviously.

“I know he’s distanced himself from it when Chris was in charge but now Chris has gone, whether that would be an attractive offer for John is the question.”

Celtic: Forrest & Taylor set to be fit

A mere bump in the road occurred in midweek as Celtic’s dominant run of form finally came to an end.

The Hoops have been fantastic over the last month or so, banishing memories of their opening day defeat and Champions League exit to hammer a number of opposition defences.

Before the Bhoys lost to AZ Alkmaar on Thursday, they had won six on the bounce, kept four clean sheets and scored 24 goals in their last half a dozen outings.

However, it’s unlikely that loss will impact Ange Postecoglou too much because Celtic still made it into the group stages of the Europa League.

They did so after a host of defensive mistakes let them down. Joe Hart failed to clear the ball for the opener in bizarre circumstances and then Carl Starfelt unfortunately prodded into his own net for the second.

Postecoglou can never account for mistakes like those but what also made life difficult were a set of injuries.

James Forrest didn’t even travel with the squad to the Netherlands while Greg Taylor hobbled off on 24 minutes.

Yet, ahead of their biggest match of the season – the Old Firm derby – it looks as though the manager will be able to call on both of their services.

That’s because they have been included in Celtic’s provisional squad for the match, meaning they’ve passed relevant fitness checks.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/postecoglou-hoops-bhoys-jenz-larsson-nisbet” title=”Check out the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Forrest hasn’t been a regular starter this season but it will please Postecoglou to have him available again. After all, the attacker is a stalwart of the club and a man for the big occasion.

Taylor hasn’t been in the best of form this term, taking criticism from supporters, but with extremely limited options at left-back, having him fit and firing is crucial.

The manager brought on Adam Montgomery to replace him in midweek while Boli Bolingoli was also a viable alternative this weekend if the Scot wasn’t fit.

On top of that, Postecoglou will also have new signing Josip Juranovic available for the first time after his move from Legia Warsaw.

Unlike the multiple Old Firm clashes that took place last term, Celtic actually look in a good place heading into this encounter. On that alone, Postecoglou will be delighted pre-game.

Everton fans rave over James news

Flocking to Twitter, many Everton fans have erupted over news on Colombia international James Rodriguez amid unrest surrounding his future on Merseyside.

The 2020 signing, whose contract expires at the end of this season, has been left in the wilderness recently.

Indeed, James was allegedly told by new Everton boss Rafael Benitez that he is surplus to requirements at Goodison Park and was even pictured yachting abroad just a few days ago (The Mirror).

The 30-year-old started 21 Premier League matches under former Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti last season, averaging more key passes per game in the final third (1.7) than any Everton player (WhoScored).

News has now emerged on James, with Colombian reporter Pipe Sierra claiming on social media that the player has rejected a last-minute switch to Istanbul Başakşehir (Twitter).

The Turkish transfer window is now closed, as Sierra added that this rejected move means the 30-year-old will remain at Everton for the time being.

Flocking to Twitter in reaction to what one Toffees supporter called ‘brilliant news’, it seems that there are a large section of fans overjoyed that the ‘world class’ James is still an option for Benitez.

Check out some of their verdicts on the news below.

MCFC fans rage at goalkeeper shirts

Manchester City fans are livid with their goalkeeper shirts for the 2021/22 campaign, which were leaked on Wednesday.

The start of the Premier League season is now just a matter of days away, and the Citizens will be preparing to face Tottenham in their opening match. Pep Guardiola and co will be hoping the signing of Jack Grealish (mancity.com) will inspire the Etihad Stadium outfit to another league title and perhaps a Champions League trophy.

Even though the start of the campaign is so close you can almost touch it, the kits have not yet been confirmed. However, a Footy Headlines link appears to show the goalkeeper shirts for the home, away and third kits. It is fair to say that the designs have not gone down well at all with the supporters – they look more like t-shirts than part of a football kit.

The images were shared on Twitter by @City_Xtra, and they attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the designs below

Journalist reveals Everton are close to breaking FFP regulations

Matt Woosnam has revealed Everton are targeting squad players rather than first-team regulars to ensure they do not break Financial Fair Play guidelines.

Andros Townsend became Rafa Benitez’s first signing since taking over as the Toffees’ boss as the winger joined following the expiry of his Crystal Palace contract earlier this week.

The former Newcastle United man’s arrival was quickly followed by Asmir Begovic making the switch from Championship side Bournemouth, with the goalkeeper providing competition for England international Jordan Pickford by penning an initial one-year deal.

Ex-Leicester City winger Demarai Gray has also sealed his return to England, following a six-month spell with Bayer Leverkusen, by completing a £1.7million transfer to Goodison Park.

The Toffees have freed up some funds by not offering Joshua King, Theo Walcott, Muhamed Besic and Yannick Bolasie contract renewals.

Woosnam, of The Athletic, believes Everton are having to be shrewd in the transfer market to make sure they do not break regulations.

He exclusively told Football FanCast: “When you look at the signings they’re making, they’re very much squad players because they’re probably quite close to the brink of Financial Fair Play and the wage cap.

“Because of that, they’re looking at players who can still contribute at that level but you wouldn’t necessarily want to play them every week and they probably haven’t got the legs or ability to play every week in the Premier League anymore.”

Celtic: Hoops weighing up James McCarthy move

Celtic are discussing a move for former Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy, according to reliable reporter Alan Nixon.

The Lowdown: McCarthy without a club

McCarthy is currently a free agent after his deal at Selhurst Park expired last month.

The midfielder, capable of playing in a defensive, central or advanced role, has been linked with the Hoops over the last 12 months.

Reports last November suggested Celtic were ready to make their move in January, whereas a story in April suggested that Newcastle United were looking to pip the Hoops to a deal.

The Irishman, who Roy Hodgson described as ‘incredible’ last year, appears to be back on Celtic’s radar, according to Nixon.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-11/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Nixon’s claim

Nixon, who writes for The Sun, was quizzed by a Celtic fan in regards to transfers on Sunday morning. He claimed there was a possibility of a central midfielder arriving, before name-checking McCarthy.

He claimed that he is free to sign and is being discussed, presumably by the Hoops hierarchy.

“McCarthy is free … and deffo being discussed…”

The Verdict: Sign

McCarthy has made 272 appearances in the Premier League so would bring bundles of experience to the Hoops squad.

He could be a perfect signing for the current campaign, especially with Scott Brown leaving for Aberdeen. McCarthy is also just 30 years of age despite making over 450 appearances for club and country during his career, so his knowledge could be crucial under Ange Postecoglou.

The Irishman is a boyhood Celtic fan, so you’d expect he would entertain the possibility of moving to Parkhead.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Divock Origi links

Crystal Palace are involved in a three-way transfer battle for Liverpool striker Divock Origi, with Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United also in the running for his signature, according to The Telegraph.

Over the course of his time on Merseyside, the Belgian has contributed some important goals to the Reds’ cause; none more so than his Champions League-winning strike against Tottenham Hotspur in 2019 [BBC].

However, he could now be set for a switch to either London or the Midlands if recent reports are to be believed. The 26-year-old has seen his stock plummet at Anfield, making just two league starts last season and netting only once in all competitions in 2020/21.

Crystal Palace are keen on taking him to Selhurst Park alongside Wolves and West Ham, with Liverpool open to offloading the striker, who has two years left on his Anfield contract [The Telegraph].

In light of these developments, plenty of Crystal Palace diehards took to social media to vent their frustration at the links with an out-of-sorts Origi.

Phil Hay drops Leeds United transfer update

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has delivered a new update on Leeds United’s transfer plans for the rest of the summer window.

What’s the story?

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have already clinched the permanent signings of Junior Firpo and Jack Harrison this summer to strengthen the first team, along with the addition of Amari Miller to help reinforce the academy.

Taking to Twitter, Hay has now outlined:

Leeds fans will be excited

Having quickly addressed the most glaring issue of bringing in a natural left-back – a position made all the more pressing given Gjanni Alioski’s departure from Elland Road this summer – Leeds have made a good start to the transfer window thus far.

Bielsa’s side enjoyed a superb first campaign back in the Premier League in 2020/21, finishing in the top ten, and will no doubt be looking to take another step forward when the new season rolls around next month.

Hay’s update that the Whites still view bringing in a new central midfielder as a “priority” is welcome news, especially when you consider that Leeds may be without Kalvin Phillips for the opening few of the new season given his Euro 2020 exertions with England. You only have to look at last year’s record of just two wins in the eight Premier League games that he missed to see how influential he is.

Add to that, the prospect of bringing in a winger later on in the window, just like they did last year with Raphinha, is equally exciting, especially if they can land a bargain like the Brazilian.

It’s exactly why Leeds fans may well be excited with this update from the reliable Hay.

Meanwhile, Adam Pope has dropped an exciting Leeds United update…

Update emerges on Scott Parker’s position

Fulham are not willing to pay Scott Parker compensation for leaving Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Sun, who claim that Shahid Khan is refusing to pay the 40-year-old any compensation for leaving his role as the Fulham boss this summer, with the manager expected to be owed around £2m if he were to leave the club by mutual consent – due to having two years remaining on his current contract.

Parker has been heavily linked with taking over the soon to be vacant position at Bournemouth this summer, with Jonathan Woodgate expected to leave the Cherries upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the month.

Khan will be livid

The fact that Parker would be due compensation if he were to leave his position at Fulham, even by mutual consent, does appear to be a bitter pill to swallow for the Cottagers, particularly as it is widely known that the 40-year-old has his next job pretty much already in the bag.

Indeed, the situation is a rather complicated one, as, should Bournemouth wish to appoint Parker, the usual way to go about this would be to pay whatever compensation fee is required to Fulham.

However, with the former England international simply wanting out of his current deal at Craven Cottage, as well as Khan wanting to see the back of the coach this summer, the logical thing to do would be for both parties to agree on a separation with no fee involved.

Although, while this is merely speculation, if Parker is demanding that Fulham pay him off for the remainder of his contract, as well as knowing that he will likely be taking the Bournemouth job at the end of the month, it would seem as if the 40-year-old could be trying to have his cake and eat it too, something that is sure to leave Khan livid.

And, if an agreement is not reached between the two parties over a compensation fee, this would appear to be an issue that very much has the potential to drag on over the summer, an outcome that neither side of the argument would like.

Should Wolves sign Henrique Araujo?

When Nuno Santo decided to leave Wolves at the end of last season, it came as a shock to everybody at Molineux.

However, what wasn’t surprising was the way the Old Gold and Fosun looked towards Portugal for his successor.

They held talks with their friendly pal, Jorge Mendes, and Bruno Lage walked through the door after a brief spell away from football.

Lage lost his job at Benfica in the top-flight of Portuguese football but guided them to the title in 2018/19, also bringing through some of the hottest young talent in Europe.

The 45-year-old has very quickly become a coach renowned for handing opportunities to younger players and judging by the Benfica academy, you can hardly blame him.

They’ve produced the likes of Bernardo Silva, Andre Silva, Joao Cancelo and Renato Sanches. Former Wolves star Ivan Cavaleiro came through their ranks while their current right-back, Nelson Semedo, cut his teeth in the Benfica academy as well.

Under Lage, it was Ruben Dias and Joao Felix who rose to stardom but there is a new breed rising up in emphatic fashion.

Unfortunately, Benfica need to sell some players in order to raise funds this summer. 15-goal Goncalo Ramos has been linked with a move to Wolves but so has one of his partners in crime, Henrique Araujo.

Another client of Mendes, the Portuguese is one of the most devastating young players in his homeland.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-wolves-transfer-news-alena-dike-neves-barisic” title=”Real the latest Wolves transfer news!”]

A centre-forward by trade, the 19-year-old found the back of the net on 19 occasions in 36 outings at youth level last season.

Araujo didn’t earn any senior football but he is surely right on the periphery of regular first-team action.

A move to Wolves could prove incredibly beneficial for his career. Although the Midlands outfit have Fabio Silva in their ranks, Lage has already proven he can develop young attacking talent.

Combine that with the club he now coaches, and it’s surely a recipe for success for the younger players coming through at Compton.

Wolves have taken players like Diogo Jota and Pedro Neto to the next level, something that should excite Araujo if he makes the move to England.

Described as a “gem” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the teenager started last season by scoring eight goals in his first eight appearances.

A player blessed with a ruthless ability to find the back of the net, he’d add to a glistening array of young talent already at Molineux.

Combine him with Silva and they could create an awe-inspiring duo for supporters to salivate over. This could be yet another jewel in the crown of Fosun’s Wolves empire.
