MacGill to serve community sentence after conviction over cocaine deal

“The offender’s colossal lapse of judgment has been causative of a very public fall from grace,” the judge said

AAP09-May-2025Stuart MacGill will serve a community sentence after being convicted over a cocaine deal, which led to his kidnapping.MacGill supplied drugs for the deal between his regular dealer and his brother-in-law in April 2021, a jury found in March. The 54-year-old knew the cocaine was worth AU$330,000 but he was oblivious to the fact that a one-kilogramme brick had changed hands. Jurors found him not guilty of taking part in a large commercial drug supply but found him guilty of the lesser charge of supplying an indictable quantity of coke.MacGill appeared at Downing Centre District Court on Friday, where a statement from former Test captain Steve Waugh backed his former colleague.”I believe that Stuart has the background of knowledge accumulated in his life and playing days to appreciate all the options for the future and the hard work and steps required in this process,” Waugh wrote in a letter to the court.MacGill was sentenced to an intensive corrections order of one year and ten months. He must complete 495 hours of community service work and undergo drug testing as part of the order, in lieu of a prison term.Judge Nicole Noman found MacGill played an indispensable role setting up the cocaine deal. “His role was essential to bring the parties together and for the transaction to occur,” she said. The lucrative cocaine deal put MacGill on the path to his violent kidnapping after his drug dealer stole two bricks of cocaine in a drug rip-off.The kidnapping then spurred adverse media reports against him.”The offender’s colossal lapse of judgment has been causative of a very public fall from grace,” the judge said.MacGill retired from cricket in 2008 after playing 44 Tests during which he claimed 208 wickets.

Cristiano Ronaldo's trophies: The 15 Real Madrid titles he's won

The Portugal superstar fired Real to victory in the Club World Cup final… what other honours has he swept up at the Bernabeu?

    Copa del Rey, 2010-11

Ronaldo would have to wait until his second season at Real to taste silverware, and he was utterly fundamental to their Copa del Rey triumph. Scoring in every game, bar each leg of the semi-final against Atletico, Ronaldo sealed the deal in a tight, tetchy final against Barcelona with a 103rd minute goal, opening the trophy floodgates.

In a simply staggering season, Ronaldo scored 46 league goals – 60 overall – as Real swept all before them. They lost just twice – to Levante and Barcelona – with Ronaldo as their frightening spearhead.

Fresh from their title victory the previous year, Real faced Copa del Rey holders, and bitter rivals, Barcelona in the Supercopa, and won on away goals. A 3-2 loss at Camp Nou – in which Ronaldo scored – was followed by a 2-1 win at the Santiago Bernabeu. Ronaldo opened the scoring, as Real held on for a victory via away goals.

Neymar, Willian & the Brazilians that Manchester United could sign this summer

Jose Mourinho has hinted that he will be in the market for South American flair this summer, but who is likely to figure on the Red Devils' wish list?

Manchester United are expected to be busy once again during the summer transfer window, with Jose Mourinho ready to inject more funds into a squad expected to challenge on all fronts in 2018-19.

The Portuguese has hinted that he will look to add a splash of South American flair to his ranks at Old Trafford, telling : "I think that a team without a Brazilian isn't a team. I think their talent is fantastic and the creativity of the Brazilian player cannot be measured. If a European team, like, very European, could have a Brazilian in their squad, it would bring a 'Brazilian thing' to the game and I think that's very important."

Who, then, could figure on the Red Devils' wish list?

    Neymar

    Current club: Paris Saint-Germain

The ultimate Brazilian signing. Has been heavily linked with a switch to Real Madrid, but United boast the financial muscle to challenge the Blancos if they want to compete for what would likely be a record-breaking deal.

    Willian

    Current club: Chelsea

Was taken to Stamford Bridge by Mourinho in 2013 and is the man to have sparked the summer transfer hint from United’s boss. Has previously claimed that he wants to spend “more years” in west London.

    Fred

    Current club: Shakhtar Donetsk

Goal revealed in February that Manchester City had agreed a £44.5 million deal in principle for the midfielder, but no move has been finalised. Shakhtar chief executive Sergei Palkin has confirmed that City or United will be his next port of call.

From Pogba to Bale, Neymar to De Ligt: The top 50 summer transfer targets of 2019

There will be plenty of movement across the world's biggest clubs, with the transfer windows opening across Europe

The 2018-19 season has concluded and one of the busiest periods for a football club is now under way: the summer transfer window .

Clubs across the world will be doing business in the market, attempting to strengthen their squads ahead of the 2019-20 campaign and deals will be hammered out right up until deadline day.

This year, in England, the summer transfer window opened a little earlier – just a few days after the last Premier League match in mid May – with the windows of the other big leagues opening on June 1.

With the rumour mill heating up, Goal takes a look at some of the biggest transfer targets.

Toby Alderweireld | Tottenham | Defender

Speculation swirled around Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld last summer, but, at the beginning of 2019, the Belgium international's contract with the club was extended until 2020.

Manchester United were reportedly very keen on the experienced centre-back and the Red Devils remain in the market for reinforcements in that area, but they will have to be willing to fork out around £25 million ($33m) if they wish to secure his services.

Arsenal have also been linked and, while he wouldn't be the first star to cross the north London divide, that destination seems less likely. He hinted that he could stay in the aftermath of Spurs' Champions League final defeat, but that will inevitably rely on various moving particles falling into place.

Gareth Bale | Real Madrid | Forward

Despite scoring decisive goals in two Champions League final successes, Gareth Bale continues to cut a figure of isolation at Real Madrid.

The winger is close to completing six years in the Spanish capital, where he has enjoyed a trophy-laden spell, but rumours persist regarding his future in the team.

In response to rumours, his agent insisted that the player is "100 per cent committed" to Los Blancos, but a return to the Premier League seems increasingly likely, with both Tottenham and Manchester United being linked.

However, any move for Bale will be a costly one, with reports suggesting that Madrid's asking price is £113 million ($148m).

  • Getty Images

Tiemoue Bakayoko | Chelsea | Midfielder

Midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko was a big-money signing for Chelsea in 2017, arriving from Monaco for a fee of £40 million ($52m), but he failed to live up to the hype and was subsequently sent out on loan to AC Milan.

The 24-year-old took some time to get going at San Siro too, but eventually found his groove, despite the ultimately missing out on Champions League qualification.

Chelsea's looming transfer ban means they may not be so inclined to allow talent to exit the club, but Milan are keen to make the deal permanent. However, rivals Inter are also monitoring the situation, according to reports.

Leonardo Bonucci | Juventus | Defender

Leonardo Bonucci made a triumphant return to Juventus last season after enduring a difficult spell at AC Milan, so it would seem unlikely that he will leave again so soon.

What we learned from Liverpool's win over Palace: From impressive Elliott to injury issues

Liverpool completed their pre-season tour of the Far East with a dominant 2-0 win over Crystal Palace in Singapore.

Jordan Henderson gave the Reds a first-half lead, sweeping home first-time from Harvey Elliott’s lay-off after only 12 minutes.

Jurgen Klopp named a completely different XI for the second half, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Thiago Alcantara and new signing Darwin Nunez all summoned.

And they extended their lead within two minutes of the restart, Salah’s deflected shot squirming through the grasp of Palace keeper Vicente Guaita for 2-0.

Having lost 4-0 against Manchester United in their previous game, in Bangkok on Tuesday, Klopp will have been pleased to see his side end their Asian trip with a victory. Next up comes a trip to Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig on Thursday.

  • Getty

Salah gives fans what they want

The loudest cheer of the first half in the Singapore National Stadium was reserved for Salah, and he wasn’t even playing.

The Egyptian’s appearance on the big screen was greeted by huge roars from the local fans, who were clearly desperate to see him in action.

They got their wish in the second half and Salah, one of 11 half-time substitutes used by Jurgen Klopp, wasted little time in giving supporters something else to savour.

He needed just 90 seconds to get himself on the scoresheet, albeit with the aid of a deflection and some questionable goalkeeping from Vicente Guaita.

Soon after, he was skipping away from Tyrick Mitchell on the byline, setting up a chance for Darwin Nunez that was saved by Guaita.

Having committed his future to Liverpool’s, Salah’s plans are now clear: He wants trophies, he wants goals and he wants glory.

And if this cameo is anything to go by, you’d back him to get exactly what he wants.

    Elliott continues to impress

A new shirt number, but everything else about Harvey Elliott so far in this pre-season has been reassuringly familiar.

The 19-year-old is some talent, and if he can remain injury-free, then he should feature regularly for Liverpool this season.

Having been brighter than most against Manchester United in Bangkok on Tuesday, Elliott again caught the eye here. There is something about his game which sets him apart from a lot of other young players; it’s the awareness, the flawless first touch, the way he constantly looks to combine with team-mates.

He did so superbly here, linking up with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner down the Liverpool right.

Elliott set up the Reds’ opening goal, pulling the ball back smartly for Jordan Henderson to sweep home, and should have grabbed one himself, only to snatch at a good chance on his weaker right foot.

  • Getty

    Milner the machine marches on

Twenty years and more than 800 games into his career, and James Milner is still going strong.

It says everything about the Liverpool vice-captain’s longevity in the game that he was doing gruelling pre-seasons before some of his team-mates were even born, and that he and Patrick Vieira, the Crystal Palace manager, were colleagues at Manchester City a dozen years ago.

Milner might have left Liverpool this summer, but having penned a new one-year contract, he looks as though he’ll be as useful to Jurgen Klopp’s squad as he’s ever been.

He played right-back in the first half here, and did as he so often does: diligently, competently and with the minimum of fuss.

He isn’t Trent Alexander-Arnold, we know that, but his aggression, energy and smartness will always be welcome in a Klopp team. Even at 36, he has a part to play.

    Nunez continues his induction

Another 30 minutes or so in the bag for Liverpool’s new £85 million ($100m) signing, and though Nunez didn’t manage to bag his first Reds goal, the signs are there that he is finding his feet in his new team.

The Uruguayan was again deployed as a No.9, flanked by Mo Salah on the right and fellow newboy Fabio Carvalho on the left.

And he was regularly in the thick of the action, denied by Vicente Guaita after a fine piece of play from Salah, and then sending another, more ambitious effort into the Palace keeper’s hands.

Again, we saw his willingness to play on the shoulder of the last defender. He was almost found by Van Dijk with one clipped long pass, and then saw Alexander-Arnold misplace an attempted through ball, when it looked like Liverpool were in business.

Later, there was a lovely swept pass into the path of Salah down the right, and by the time he was replaced by youngster Bobby Clark, 12 minutes from time, the 23-year-old could reflect on another worthwhile workout.

Bigger tests are to come, for sure, but for now Klopp will be satisfied by what he’s seeing from his new centre forward.

Messi is a footballing God! Argentina winners, losers & ratings as Leo carries Scaloni's side into World Cup quarter-finals

Lionel Scaloni's side edged past Australia to set-up a mouth-watering meeting with the Netherlands – and their No.10 was at his devastating best.

Lionel Messi has his first goal in the knockout stage of a World Cup, and boy was it a crucial one, with the Argentina captain breaking the deadlock out of nowhere in a hard-fought 2-1 win over Australia.

Up until that point, the Socceroos had frustrated the life out of the Argentina fans, who once again took over nearly an entire stadium here in Qatar.

They had come to see Lionel Messi mark the 1000th game of his incredible career with another masterclass, and they eventually got one, but, for the first 35 minutes, pretty much nothing happened.

The No.10 was quickly surrounded by yellow shirts every time he received the ball and he struggled to impose himself on the proceedings.

Nobody else in an Argentine shirt looked like making a breakthrough either.

If history has taught us anything, though, it's that Messi only needs a split second to score, and that's precisely what he did, reacting first to what looked more like a loose touch than a lay-off from Nicolas Otamendi.

That lethal left foot took care of the rest, with the Paris Saint-Germain star simply passing the ball into the bottom corner of the Australia net.

Julian Alvarez then took advantage of a shocking mistake from Mathew Ryan to make it 2-0 and although Australia set up a tense finale courtesy of a speculative shot from Craig Goodwin that deflected in off Enzo Fernandez, Argentina held on thanks to a terrific late block from Lisandro Martinez, and a fine stop from namesake Emiliano.

Below, GOAL breaks down the winners, losers and ratings from another memorable night for Messi's Argentina…

  • Getty Images

    The Winners

    Lionel Messi:

Pablo Zabaleta admitted to before the game that the Argentina side he used to play in didn't really have a Plan B, primarily because Plan A was usually so effective. "If you have Messi next to you," he explained, "you just pass the ball to Messi. That's all we had to do. I know we rely on him a lot but when he finds those small spaces outside the box, he is always dangerous." Messi's 789th goal perfectly illustrated that point. He had been frustrated until the 35th minute, losing the ball with unusual regularity because of the intense pressure he found himself put under by the Socceroos. But when Australia allowed Messi to find one of those small spaces, he predictably punished them. It's now nine World Cup goals for Messi, and a first in the last 16. Who would dare bet against him adding to that tally before Qatar 2022 is out? This was vintage Messi. One classic surge from the halfway line prompted the supporters behind the goal to start bowing before him. And why not? The man is a footballing god.

    Manchester City:

We knew last summer that Manchester City had signed one outstanding young striker in Erling Haaland. What we didn't know is that they had also picked up another by snapping up Julian Alvarez. Those who had seen the Argentine play for River Plate knew he was a forward of serious potential, but nobody expected him to become such a pivotal player for his country. Not this quickly, at least. He was only meant to be Lautaro Martinez's understudy; Alvarez has instead taken centre stage. There's every chance of him returning to the Eithad as a bona fide superstar.

    Lisandro Martinez:

Talk about making an impact. Lisandro Martinez probably didn't expect to have much to do when he came on just after half-time. Argentina were a goal to the good at the time, and Australia had yet to even have a shot on target. What's more, just a few minutes after his introduction, Alvarez made it 2-0. It looked like game over. However, Goodwin's deflected strike rattled Argentina and Australia looked certain to draw level when Behich embarked upon the run of his life in the 81st minute. The left-back did absolutely everything right after slaloming his way through the Albiceleste back-line but his goal-bound shot was sensationally blocked by Martinez. The raucous celebration said it all. He knew what he'd just done: won the game for Argentina.

    The Losers

    Mathew Ryan:

In this era of building from the back, we're seeing more and more goalkeeping gaffes. Playing the ball out of defence is a dangerous game and it's believed that the reward is worth the risk. That's not going to make Mathew Ryan feel any better about his howler, though. The Copenhagen shot-stopper is the most experienced player in Australia's squad. He should have known better than to even attempt to dribble his way out of his six-yard box given he was coming under intense pressure from Rodrigo De Paul after a heavy first touch. Ryan played a pivotal role in Australia beating both Tunisia and Denmark to progress to the last 16 but the sad thing now is that his campaign will probably be best remembered for an atrocious error that cost his team dearly.

    Lautaro Martinez:

It's actually getting a little difficult to watch Lautaro Martinez's efforts at Qatar 2022. Primarily because they're so painfully wayward. He should have ensured a far more comfortable finish to this match for Argentina, when Messi teed him up twice in the closing stages, but he fired high and wide with his first strike before then shooting straight at Ryan with his second. Scaloni really is blessed that Alvarez has caught fire because Lautaro's confidence is clearly shot.

    Argentina Ratings: Defence

    Emiliano Martinez (8/10):

Annoyed the Aussies with his time-wasting before then breaking their hearts with a crucial stop from Garang Kuol right at the death.

    Nahuel Molina (6/10):

Nowhere near as effective as he was against Poland. Replaced by Montiel midway through the second half.

    Nicolas Otamendi (8/10):

Another fine performance from Argentina's best defender at this tournament. Can even claim an assist, even if he might not have known that much about it.

    Cristian Romero (7/10):

A solid showing from the Spurs man, who looks to have recovered from his shocking start to the World Cup.

    Marcos Acuna (7/10):

The better of the two starting full-backs, getting forward when he could and using the ball well.

    Midfield

    Rodrigo De Paul (7/10):

Never stopped running or harrying Australia players. Got his reward when his pressure led to Alvarez's goal.

    Enzo Fernandez (8/10):

Seriously unlucky to see Goodwin's shot deflect off him and into the net. He was immense again, though. No player on the pitch had more touches or played more passes.

    Alexis Mac Allister (6/10):
Failed to replicate his heroics against Poland and was withdrawn late on.

How England should line up against Senegal: Drop Henderson but bring back Saka

Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford both impressed against Wales but will they retain their places in the line-up for Sunday's last-16 tie?

England boss Gareth Southgate has plenty of big decisions to make as he ponders his starting XI to face Senegal on Sunday evening.

The Three Lions cruised into the knockout stages of the World Cup, with a 3-0 win against Wales sealing their passage through as group winners.

Southgate rotated his side for that final group stage fixture and two of the players he brought in, Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden, stole the show, sharing all the goals between them.

So what should the manager do against Senegal? We asked GOAL's Arsenal correspondent Charles Watts to pick the starting XI he would like to see at Al Bayt Stadium.

This is what he went for, using the same 4-3-3 formation Southgate has utilised in all three of England's game so far…

  • Jordan Pickford

England’s No.1 has done nothing wrong so far this tournament and has made some important stops the few times he has been called upon. A vital part of the team.

  • Getty Images

    Kyle Walker

Kieran Trippier didn’t do anything wrong in the opening two games, so it’s perhaps a bit harsh to leave him out of this one. But Kyle Walker just has that extra bit of pace and as long as he suffered no ill effects from his appearance against Wales, he would just get the nod for this one. Senegal have some fast wide players and Walker would be the better option to counter their threat, providing he is fully fit.

  • Getty

    John Stones

This one is an easy decision. Stones and Harry Maguire have been excellent to date, so there is no need to consider changing the centre-backs. Stones’ ability to play out from the back remains one of the most important aspects of this England team.

    Harry Maguire

Maguire deserves a lot of credit for the way he has performed in Qatar. He was under immense pressure going into the tournament but has barely put a foot wrong as he continues to reward Southgate for the faith he has shown in him. A huge asset in both boxes, Maguire should keep his place.

Manchester City vs Liverpool match preview: Team news, head-to-head, lineups, & predictions

GOAL previews the Premier League fixture between Manchester City and Liverpool, with team news, predictions, head to head record, key players.

Liverpool will travel to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester Cityin a blockbusterPremier Leagueclash on Saturday.

The defending champions find themselves eight points behind league leaders Arsenal, with a match in hand, and cannot afford to slip up further to keep their title ambitions alive.

The two teams last met each other in the Carabao Cup where Pep Guardiola's troops earned a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Reds, courtesy of goals from Erling Haaland, Riyad Mahrez and Nathan Ake.

On the other hand, Liverpool find themselves in the sixth spot with 42 points from 26 matches. However, they have the opportunity to do the league double over the Sky Blues as they won the reverse fixture at Anfield after a 76th-minute goal by Mohamed Salah.

A win would cut down the deficit with fifth-placed Newcastle United to three points and if the Magpies falter to Manchester United a day later, then a European berth could well be within reach for Jurgen Klopp's men.

    Team analysis

    Manchester City team news

    Manchester City Starting XI

Ederson; Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte; Rodri, Rico Lewis; Riyad Mahrez, Kevin De Bruyne, Ilkay Gundogan, Jack Grealish; Erling Haaland.

    Recent form

Manchester City head into this fixture on the back of a 6-0 win over Burnley in the FA Cup quarter-finals to progress into the last four of the prestigious cup competition. Haaland bagged a hat-trick, Julian Alvarez scored a brace, whereas Cole Palmer chipped in with another goal to complete the rout. Before that match, they scored seven past RB Leipzig in the Champions League courtesy of a five-star performance from the Norwegian striker.

    Key players

All eyes will be on Haaland as the striker was in scorching form before club football came to a halt for the international break. The 22-year-old has scored 28 goals in 26 Premier League appearances and is gunning to break the all-time record for most goals (34) in a Premier League season which is currently jointly held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.

    Injuries & suspensions

Phil Foden has undergone surgery in London for acute appendicitis and will not be fit for this weekend’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool.

Haaland did not join his national teammates during the international break due to an adductor problem but is expected to be fit for the clash.

    Tactical approach

Manchester City will go for the win right from the first whistle. They are chasing Arsenal at the top and will give their all to get an early opener to release the pressure. Guardiola's teams like to dominate possession, and it should be no different against Liverpool.

    Position Players
Goalkeepers: Ederson Moraes, Stefan Ortega, Scott Carson.

    Liverpool team news

    Liverpool Starting XI

Alisson Becker; Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson; Cody Gakpo, Fabinho, James Milner; Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez.

    Recent form

After dishing out a 7-0 thrashing to Manchester United at Anfield they have lost two successive matches to Bournemouth and Real Madrid in the Premier League and the Champions League, respectively, which is a testimony to the inconsistent form that has plagued them throughout the season.

    Key players

Salah will be the one to watch out for the Reds. The Egyptian has 18 goal contributions in 26 matches for Liverpool in the Premier League and will once again spearhead the attack from the right.

    Injuries & suspensions

Liverpool have several players on the nursing table, including Calvin Ramsay, Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic, and Konstantinos Tsimikas.

However, the likes of Darwin Nunez, Joe Gomez and Luis Diaz are likely to make a return to the matchday squad.

    Tactical approach

Liverpool are likely to press high with their three forwards putting pressure on the Man City defenders who will be looking to play out from the back. They will be expected to keep things tight at the back and then pounce on the counter with the Salah and Gakpo turning on their after-burners.

    Position Players
Goalkeepers: Alisson Becker, Caoimhin Kelleher, Adrian.

Manchester City vs Liverpool match preview

    Venue, date & kick-off time

The Premier League fixture between Manchester City & Liverpool will be played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, April 1. The game is scheduled to kick off at 8.30am EDT.

    Match predictions & expected outcome

Both Manchester City and Liverpool are desperate to win but for entirely different reasons. While City are gunning for the top spot in the Premier League table, Liverpool are fighting for a European berth. There is little doubt it would be a highly contested affair but Pep Guardiola's troops should edge out the Merseyside outfit given their home record and current form. Moreover, Liverpool have struggled on the road this season, having taken just 12 points from their 13 Premier League away games.

Key battles to watch out for

It will be an intriguing battle between Haaland and Van Dijk. The defender came out on top in the reverse fixture at Anfield and the fate of the match might hinge on this extremely important duel between the two. Haaland had been suffering from an abductor problem and he was resting during the international break while the Dutch defender was busy with his international commitments. Moreover, the striker is coming into this fixture having scored eight goals in the last two matches. Can Van Dijk contain the explosive forward once again? We say, bring it on!

    Potential game changers

If Haaland happens to be City's most potent weapon, then Liverpool have Salah who can change the complexion of any game singlehandedly. The Egyptian has scored in all three of Liverpool's games against Man City this season, in the Premier League, Community Shield and EFL Cup and could well be the difference-maker on Saturday.

Our final thoughts on the match

    • Liverpool are looking to complete the league double over Manchester City for what would be just the second time in the last 17 seasons, previously doing so in Klopp's debut campaign in 2015-16. A solid performance at the back and a few moments of individual brilliance can definitely tilt the tie in their favour.
    • Haaland has scored 42 goals in all competitions for Manchester City this season, including six hat-tricks (all at the Etihad). Only two players have scored more in a single campaign for a Premier League club (since 1992-93) – Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2002-03 and Mohamed Salah in 2017-18 (both 44) and another hat-trick on Saturday can help the Norwegian set a new league record.
    • Irrespective of the winner, the fans should be treated to a high-octane football match as club football resumes after a brief halt due to the international break.
