Any lingering hopes the Melbourne Renegades had that they would sneak into the Big Bash League semi-finals were extinguished at the Docklands Stadium as they slid to a 22-run defeat at the hands of the Adelaide Strikers, who confirmed their spot at the top of the table.A very special innings of 71 from just 34 balls from Travis Head elevated the Strikers to 5 for 166, which proved too much for the Renegades who never really threatened to hunt down that target. The Strikers’ batting this season has been defined by the aggressive starts provided by Craig Simmons and Tim Ludeman, but today, in a stadium with drop-in pitches that has seen two team-scores of less than 100 in consecutive matches, the Strikers opted for caution in the Powerplay.Such care made little difference to the score as a superb start with the ball and in the field from the Renegades set the Strikers back to 3 for 27. James Pattinson bowled all four of his overs in one spell, conceding just three runs from his first 19 deliveries before leaking two boundaries in his final over to finish with 1 for 12, taking the wicket of Simmons in the fifth over with a delivery that shaped away to find the edge.Ludeman also fell in the Powerplay for a 10-ball 4 when Fawad Ahmed’s direct hit from the deep caught the batsman short of a second run. Two balls later, Ryan ten Doeschate was dismissed, dragging on a delivery from Nathan Rimmington that was angled in and jagged away. The Strikers’ understandable but uncharacteristic caution had left them no better off.Ten Doeschate’s departure brought together 21-year-old Head and the 20 year-old debutant Kelvin Smith, and the young pair consolidated and later accelerated the Strikers innings to forge a record fourth-wicket stand.Head kick-started his innings with fours through mid-on and mid-wicket in the seventh over, but he and Smith both continued with caution and then pro-activity. Head’s innings unfurled after his first 13 deliveries from which he had scored just 15 runs. An all-out assault on Ben Stokes in the 12th over saw the first three balls hit for six; the second an outrageous lofted cover drive. While Smith could do little more than rotate the strike on a tacky pitch, Head transcended the conditions to play one of the innings of the season.More remarkable shots followed, as a slashing cut through point, a clubbed straight six and a clip over the infield took Head to his second fifty of the season. After a sedate start, he had accelerated to score 56 from his last 21 balls. He eventually fell when he failed to clear Stokes at deep mid-wicket, but the match had been turned upside down by his audacious and powerful stroke play. Two further overs of consolidation then followed, as Johan Botha joined Smith for the fifth wicket. Botha clubbed two fours and a six before he was caught attempting another boundary off a reverse sweep in the penultimate delivery of the innings. Smith, though, remained unbeaten, finishing on 41 from 34 balls. More importantly, he expertly anchored the final nine overs of the innings in which the Strikers bludgeoned 104 runs for the loss of just two wickets. The Renegades needed to not only win, but win well to keep their qualification chances alive. They never looked like doing either. A painful innings from Matthew Wade – 22 from 34 deliveries including 16 dot balls – epitomised the Renegades’ struggles as they failed to establish any momentum. They lost both Alex Doolan and Callum Ferguson before the Powerplay was over, and once they were behind the rate when they exited it at 2 for 39, their chances were already slipping away as the Strikers deployed their spinners.Adam Zampa and Botha have both conceded runs at less than six per over during the middle overs this season, and they put the squeeze on again today despite some powerful hitting from Stokes, who made 33 before falling to the leg-spin of Zampa. Wade’s 34-ball innings was ended just two overs later, and there was a sense that the Renegades had already given up real hope. Shakib and Tom Beaton hit some lusty late blows, but the target was always out of reach as they eventually closed their innings with 7 for 144.Defeat for the Renegades completes the semi-final line-up of the Strikers, Perth Scorchers, Melbourne Stars and Sydney Sixers, with another home semi-final still up for grabs.

Clarke would play under captain Smith

Michael Clarke has said he would be prepared to play on under Steven Smith’s captaincy if the selectors decided to hand the job to Smith on a full-time basis

Michael Clarke has said he would be prepared to play on under Steven Smith’s captaincy if the selectors decided to hand the job to Smith on a full-time basis. Clarke remains Australia’s Test and ODI captain but Smith led the side in the final three Tests against India this summer and scored a century in every match, securing Australia the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Smith also led Australia to victory in a one-day game against England in Hobart when the stand-in ODI skipper George Bailey was suspended, and again scored a century. Clarke is expected to take back the captaincy whenever he makes his comeback after hamstring surgery, but he told radio on Monday that he would play under Smith if the selectors went that way.”Most definitely I would,” Clarke said. “I feel for Smitty, because I sat in his shoes when a lot of the media were trying to call for Ricky Ponting to retire. It’s certainly not personal between Smitty and I, we’ve been friends for a long time and will continue to be. The people that sit above both him and I will make their decisions.”Whatever they feel is the best 11 players, they’ll pick that 11. Whoever they feel is the best captain for the team, then they’ll pick that. If my time is over as a player – or as a captain – then, you know, the game moves on. I still think I have a lot to offer the team, I still feel like I can perform and help us have success, but that’s out of my hands. The most important thing for me is to get fit and healthy.”A Clarke-Smith handover would not be dissimilar to the situation that took place when Clarke was appointed captain in 2011 and Ponting played on in the Test side under Clarke. However, Ponting was 36 when that change took place; Clarke is only 33, but his ongoing back and hamstring injuries have left significant doubt as to how much cricket he will play in the future.Last week, Clarke had said that he hoped to remain as captain for the rest of his career, if the selectors considered him the right man for the job. At the time, he said: “I think I’ve earned that respect, I think I’ve played some really good cricket and from the information I have the selectors are really happy with my performances – personally and also with my captaincy. I’ve heard no different at this stage.”Clarke made his return from injury in grade cricket in Sydney on Saturday, but it remains to be seen whether he will be ready for the step up to international cricket by the deadline of February 21 imposed by the selectors when they chose the World Cup squad.

–O Marcelo sepultou o pai dele ontem à tarde.

Black Caps gaining the All Blacks experience

Shared knowledge between Mike Hesson and his All Blacks counterpart, Steve Hansen, will play a role in New Zealand’s campaign in the knockout stages of the World Cup

Andrew McGlashan14-Mar-20150:42

‘Win shows depth in batting’ – Guptill

Shared knowledge between Mike Hesson and his All Blacks counterpart, Steve Hansen, will play a role in New Zealand’s campaign during the knockout stages of the World Cup.New Zealand completed an unbeaten group stage with a tight three-wicket victory against Bangladesh in Hamilton and now have a week before their quarter-final in Wellington. Their opponents will not be known until late on Sunday when the West Indies-UAE and Ireland-Pakistan fixtures are complete. However, regardless of who New Zealand face on March 21 it will come with an entirely new set of pressures. There are players who have been visitors to global quarter and semi-finals, but this is on home soil and with a team whose unbeaten run has pushed levels of expectation to new heights. That is something the All Blacks, New Zealand’s most famous sports team, are used to handling. In 2011, they won the World Cup with an 8-7 victory over France at Eden Park. Hansen was assistant coach to Graham Henry at the time and then assumed the top job at the end of 2011. There are also other connections between the two teams with captain Brendon McCullum an acquaintance of Richie McCaw, the current All Blacks captain. Before the tournament McCullum hinted he may seek out McCaw when the knockout stage arrived.”I’ve already done that, a long time ago, and continue to do so,” Hesson said of taking advice from Hansen who has been a friend for a considerable time. “Luckily enough that I have some friends in those environments and we talk on a casual basis. There are some good learnings from them. I won’t go in to what he said but we talk pretty regularly and are both aware of the pressures you face at a World Cup at home.”Hesson believes he is getting a first-hand experience of the pressures that surround the All Blacks during a major tournament, admitting it has been hard to keep everyone happy even while New Zealand have beaten all-comers so far.McCullum’s heart-stopping fielding

Mike Hesson admitted that Brendon McCullum’s gravity-defying dive near the boundary against Bangladesh was not the first time his heart had nearly been stopped by the captain’s dynamic fielding.

“He does it three or four times a game, that’s the way he plays. He likes to set the tone and it was a pretty miraculous effort.”

He said he had considered the ramifications of McCullum throwing himself around on many occasions, but conceded there would be no changing him.

“I’ve thought about that many times in the last couple of years, but he sets the standard and guys feed off his energy. We live and die by that, I guess.”

Three of the victories – against Sri Lanka, England and Afghanistan – have been very comfortable. The win over Scotland was a little messy with the bat, but with the defence of improving the net run-rate, while the Australia match became a low-scoring epic. The Bangladesh contest was the toughest all-round challenge New Zealand had received.”The All Blacks are a good analogy, they have to win by a certain amount of points to get respect and if they win by more than that the opposition are rubbish – it’s quite hard to find a middle ground,” Hesson said.”In all honesty I’m not sure what a perfect win is because we’ve beaten a lot of teams convincingly and we’ve been told we should have a closer game, and are under done, then you win a close game and you haven’t played very well. In all honesty it’s quite difficult to know what you have to do.””We’ve won a lot of games comfortably but last night we were challenged chasing a score and to get over the line with different players standing up breeds a lot of confidence.”The chase included New Zealand’s first hundred of the campaign, by Martin Guptill, and the highest partnership as he and Ross Taylor added 131 following the early losses of in-form pair of McCullum and Kane Williamson. However, Hesson did concede the team had not been at their best against Bangladesh, especially in the way they closed out both innings. With the ball, they shipped 104 runs in the final 10 overs and then none of the established batsmen could finish the chase, leaving it to Daniel Vettori and Tim Southee to strike the final blows.Four of the overs in the last 10 were bowled by Mitchell McClenaghan, who had been drafted in for the injured Adam Milne, the first change of the tournament for the New Zealand XI. He finished with eight overs for 68 and Grant Elliott was required to bowl two overs at the death.”If you keep picking up wickets in the middle the death doesn’t become as big a factor,” Hesson said. “To be fair in the first 10 overs we could have won the game with the ball, it swung plenty and we created opportunities and if we’d taken them the death wouldn’t have been a factor. But we didn’t nail the death and we’ll have to keep working on it.”While Milne’s exclusion was framed as erring on the side of caution, Hesson said it was unlikely the fast bowler would have played even if it had been a knockout match but, with a week until the quarter, he was hopeful of him being available.

Maharashtra steady after Tamil Nadu make 549

Maharashtra replied in solid fashion after Tamil Nadu amassed 549 in their first innings on the third day at Eden Gardens

Maharashtra replied in solid fashion after Tamil Nadu amassed 549 in their first innings on the third day at Eden Gardens. Swapnil Gugale and Chirag Khurana steadied the proceedings with an unbroken 90-run stand after losing Harshad Khadiwale in the sixth over. Runs came at a fair clip – in contrast to Tamil Nadu’s relatively slow batting – with Maharashtra scoring at 3.43 per over.Tamil Nadu found wickets just as elusive as their counterparts did on the first two days, but their lower order made handsome contributions to take the score well past 500.After Anupam Sanklecha struck twice to remove overnight batsmen B Indrajith, who exited in the fifth over of the day, and R Prasanna, the score read 444 for 7. Malolan Rangarajan , then, added 57 runs in the company of Aswin Crist, and after his departure, put on 37 runs with Balaji. None of Maharashtra’s frontline bowlers conceded more than three an over.Tamil Nadu captain Abhinav Mukund admitted his team hadn’t bowled as well as they would have liked. “We gave away more loose balls than in the last game,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “I gave attacking fields to the bowlers, and you are bound to go for runs if you attack a lot, and their batsmen played well, too.”Most of Maharashtra’s batsmen are stroke-makers, and if we keep pegging away in the first couple of hours tomorrow, we can pick up a few wickets. The pitch looked quite flat today, but there is bound to be some wear and tear, and it will hopefully get slower. It’s going to be an interesting game.”Gugale, for his part, said Maharashtra had a “simple plan” for tomorrow, that of losing no more than two or three wickets in the day, and scoring 270-odd runs. “There is no scope of an outright result in this game. The wicket is favourable to batsmen, but is slower and lower. It’s very humid, and we fielded for almost eight sessions. t’s a big total, so it’s dicey to tell exactly what we will need to do. We managed to not lose many wickets today, and we will continue to try and do the same tomorrow.”
