'We can't get complacent against Australia' – Rohit

Rohit Sharma feels India cannot afford to take Australia lightly during the seven-match ODI series, given the visitors’ experience of playing in Indian conditions

George Bailey’s side may be no match for the great Australian teams of recent vintage but Rohit Sharma feels India cannot afford to take them lightly during the seven-match ODI series, given the visitors’ experience of playing in Indian conditions.”They are a very competitive side with most of their players having featured in the IPL and the Champions League,” Rohit told . “They know the Indian conditions well. We can’t get complacent against them. Australia on a given day are a very dangerous side.”Shane Watson and Mitchell Johnson are the only two players in the Australia squad to have featured in more than 100 ODIs but Rohit refused to read too much into the relative inexperience of the others. “They are still a very competitive side,” Rohit said. “Their batters are match-winners. We have to be at our best against them.”However, Rohit admitted that Australia would miss their regular captain and most experienced player Michael Clarke, whose chronic back problem has ruled him out of the series.Following years of largely underwhelming performances in the middle order, Rohit has enjoyed success after being promoted to open the batting this year, and averages 41.42 in 16 ODIs since. However, his strike-rate in those matches dropped to 68.63 compared to a career figure of 75.61. With two new balls being used in ODIs now, Rohit said an opener had to be watchful initially.”You need to be cautious with the new ball upfront. You have to plan your strategy accordingly. The shot selection becomes important for you as an opener, like what shots you have to play, which areas you have to go after. The new rules are more helpful to bowlers.”

Helmet fits Carberry in big stand with Cook

Michael Carberry and Alastair Cook impressed as an alternative opening combination for England on the first day against Australia A in Hobart

The Report by Daniel Brettig in Hobart06-Nov-2013
Scorecard0:00

‘Spare a thought for Bairstow’

Shiny, space-age in design and emblazoned with a racing stripe, Michael Carberry’s batting helmet seems less appropriate headgear for an Ashes tour match than Olympic track cycling. There was something of the road race about day one in Hobart, however, as Carberry and his captain Alastair Cook tested out an alternative opening combination to impressive effect against Australia A on a pristine Bellerive Oval pitch. His choice of headgear was the only jarring thing about Carberry, who otherwise looked entirely at ease alongside Cook and made a persuasive case for his inclusion at the top of the order in Brisbane. Joe Root, who had opened across the earlier Ashes encounter in England, was left to watch from the boundary’s edge from his new post at No. 5, and must now be pondering a middle-order commission across the five Tests. By the close Carberry and Cook had pushed on to the highest opening stand ever seen at Bellerive.Equally welcome for England alongside Carberry’s appearance of certainty was Cook slipping comfortably into the prolific batting groove he occupied on the last tour in 2010-11. Helped by Australia A bowling that was often too short and too straight, he had little trouble scoring freely around the ground, and showed no signs of the back stiffness that had ruled him out of the opening tour fixture in Perth. For the Australia A captain Moises Henriques and his somewhat uneven XI – far stronger in batting than bowling – it was a day of unrequited toil. Unable to take early wickets when the pitch offered the mildest hint of life, the hosts were sentenced to a day devoid of joy, coming closest to a wicket in the evening when a snick by Carberry from Ben Cutting on 135 landed short of Trent Copeland in the gully. They face further hard labour on the ‘morrow.Upon choosing to bat on a surface far less verdant than those prepared in Hobart this time last summer, Cook revealed that his opening partner would not be Root but Carberry. He had hinted as much on match eve, but it remained notable to glimpse Cook walking to the middle accompanied by the very same man Shane Warne had recommended as a better option at the top in Australia than Root.Michael Carberry finished the day unbeaten on 153•Getty Images

There was some semblance of early life in the pitch, and neither Cook nor Carberry looked completely at ease in the early overs, nudging runs here and there while being beaten often by balls that zipped away from them. Most often these were bowled by Copeland, demonstrating the seam-up skill that made him a valued recruit for Northamptonshire earlier in the year. It was the jetlagged Henriques who made the first appeal of the morning, striking Cook on the pads in the vicinity of off stump but not finding any response to his shout. Those early alarms safely negotiated, Cook and Carberry were able to settle in. Nothing could be found in the pitch for either of the spinners Jon Holland and Glenn Maxwell, while Cutting’s line and length were not quite consistent enough to create the desired pressure. Cook reached his 50 just before lunch, and Carberry joined him soon after.Closely watched by the team director Andy Flower and the batting coach Graham Gooch, Carberry played neatly enough, seeing off several periods of slow scoring without growing too frustrated. He snicked numerous deliveries going across him towards the slips when attempting come forward and drive, but was otherwise able to sit on the back foot in defence and attack, suggesting that Australia A’s bowlers too often dropped short of the ideal zone.Cook meanwhile offered his familiar mixture of sound judgment, efficient strokeplay and deep reserves of concentration, able to work the ball off his hip consistently to rotate strike and frustrate the local attack. Both batsmen enjoyed themselves against the spinners, Holland treated with particular brusqueness in his short spells and shielded for much of the day while Henriques hoped for the wicket that would bring a right-hander to the crease. It was not to arrive, however. Cook was 97 at tea and reached his century shortly after the resumption, marking it with a low key celebration that recognised the innings as a sound building block for the tour to come but nothing more. Carberry was understandably more demonstrative when he crested three figures, rejoicing an innings that will go a long way towards earning him a place in the Test team for Brisbane.Carberry’s exuberance contrasted with the mounting fatigue of Australia A’s bowlers on a surface offering very little help at all beyond the first half hour. Some of the fielding was also poor, the lack of energy or intensity on display unlikely to have impressed the selector Rod Marsh as he watched from the stands. The new ball brought hope of renewed life as the shadows lengthened, but when Cutting drew another edge from Carberry with a delivery of decent pace and zip, it fell tantalisingly short of Copeland.England’s openers were thus left to reach the close unparted and largely unhindered, setting down a very fine platform indeed for their likely pairing across the Ashes series. In doing so they also provided Australia’s bowlers with a reminder that anything less than their best offerings may result in grim days to rival those of four summers ago. They may be seeing a lot more of the Carberry helmet.

Meia?

Pujara's ninth double gives Saurashtra innings-lead

Saurashtra salvaged three points in a stalemate at the MA Chidambaram Stadium while the hosts, Tamil Nadu, had to live with just one point despite putting on 565

The Report by Kanishkaa Balachandran in Chennai01-Dec-2013
ScorecardCheteshwar Pujara is fast climbing the list of Indians with the most double-centuries•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

By the end of the opening session on the third day, the result, or rather the lack of one, seemed a foregone conclusion. Neither side had the bowling to force an outright win, so it was down to a shootout for first-innings points between two strong batting line-ups. Saurashtra salvaged three points in a stalemate at the MA Chidambaram Stadium while the hosts, Tamil Nadu, had to live with just one point despite putting on 565. That only 14 wickets fell across four days with neither team taking all ten wickets in an innings, showed the imbalance between bat and ball.In the end, there were only individual milestones to be gained. Cheteshwar Pujara warmed up for the tour of South Africa with his ninth first-class double-century, occupying the crease for nearly two full days. Saurashtra captain Jaydev Shah narrowly missed his maiden double-ton but it was his mammoth stand of 353 for the fourth wicket with Pujara that had set up the side to take the innings lead. The overcast conditions, following early-morning rain, gave the bowlers the best chance to create pressure, but Pujara and Shah didn’t give anything away. Shah continued his assault against the spinners, increasing his six tally to eight, sending the ball a few rows into the second tier of the Madras Cricket Club clubhouse. The pair continued to find the gaps, especially Pujara, who took a different approach to his captain and kept the ball along the ground. Shah, who progressed at a faster rate, perished trying to drive Aswin Crist through the off side. The outside edge was taken neatly and low by B Aparajith at gully. The breakthrough – the result of a bowling change – came much too late for Tamil Nadu, before Pujara and Aarpit Vasavada put together the second-most decisive partnership of the match. Tamil Nadu had themselves to blame for not piling on additional pressure, with Vasavada dropped at second slip by M Vijay. The edge flew to Vijay, who was late to react and it was his second costly drop of the match, having given Shah a life on 8.Pujara progressed towards his double-hundred with a powerful straight drive and a dab to third man. Rain forced the players off the field half an hour before lunch and following the break, after a fairly prolonged wait in the 190s, Pujara reached 200 with an outside edge that raced to the third-man boundary. Among Indian batsmen, only Vijay Merchant (11), Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Hazare and Rahul Dravid (10 each) have hit more first-class double-centuries.Tamil Nadu shuffled their bowlers but the fourth-day pitch had not deteriorated enough to give either the seamers or spinners a chance. Even the part-timers couldn’t produce any breakthroughs as Pujara and Vasavada – who already has a double-century this season – settled in for a century stand. The field-set got more defensive, with four men in the deep, as Saurashtra neared 500. There was hardly an element of risk in Pujara’s knock. The upper cut and reverse sweep – a shot he rarely plays – seemed premeditated, all played safe of the fielders. The only thing that stood in Saurashtra’s way of getting three points was the weather. Rain struck again at the stroke of tea but relented to cut short only 35 minutes of play. The pair reached their target of 566 in the final session and from then on the only point of interest was whether Vasavada could score a century and Pujara his second triple-hundred of the season. Vasavada fell slashing to point and the match was called off after Pujara fell top edging a sweep to fine leg for a marathon 269.Tamil Nadu’s declaration, late on the second day, had backfired. It was a situation that mirrored their match against Karnataka last season, at the same venue, when their bowlers failed to defend 538 for 4. Shah said he was surprised at the timing of their declaration. “I was expecting them to declare at around 640,” Shah said. “We did the same thing against UP, batting out two days and declaring early on the third. In this game you can never say. A score of 560 is always difficult to chase and not many teams have chased it. I think after this Tamil Nadu will realise, on a pitch like this [though it isn’t safe].”

Warner and Clarke flay England

Domineering hundreds by Michael Clarke and David Warner, a declaration with an impregnable position swiftly achieved and two England wickets in the final hour: things could not have gone much better for Australia

Jarrod Kimber’s Ashes Report: Australia couldn’t be further ahead

Domineering hundreds by Michael Clarke and David Warner, a declaration with an impregnable position swiftly achieved and two England wickets in the final hour: things could not have gone much better for Australia as they pressed for the victory that would put them 1-0 up in the Ashes series.Australia stacked up a lead of 560 before declaring with slightly more than an hour remaining on the third day and they made excellent use of the 15 overs they reserved for a bowl against a weary and demoralised England side as Michael Carberry and Jonathan Trott both perished. That life could not be going more swimmingly for Australia was apparent when Carberry played on against Ryan Harris, his attempted block spinning off a thick inside edge between his legs. Trott’s difficulties against the pace of Mitchell Johnson also persisted: fortunate to survive on 7, when a miscued hook fell safely, he fell for 9 when he flicked Johnson off his hips straight to Nathan Lyon, stationed 20 yards in from the square leg boards. Against Johnson, he looks unbalanced both physically and mentally. It could have been worse for England as Alastair Cook dived desperately for the crease to avoid being run out for nought as Kevin Pietersen undertook a characteristically chancy single to get off the mark.Australia could not have envisaged such a dominant position when they were six down for 132 on the first day. No side has made more than 418 in the fourth innings to win a Test, a feat achieved by West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 2003. With two days remaining, they are perfectly placed to achieve the win to back up their confident pre-series chat.To draw, England would have to bat for more overs than in any Test in their history, the Timeless Test in Durban in 1939 apart. To win, they would have to break records by a huge margin. There was a storm in Brisbane a few hours after play, but the daytime forecast on Sunday was just for an occasional heavy shower.Their captain is also restored to full operational efficiency. Clarke fell for 113 from only 130 deliveries shortly before tea, his dismissal caused by perhaps his only ungainly moment as he came down the pitch to Graeme Swann and was bowled as he was drawn into an ugly leg-side slog. His 25th Test hundred, and his fifth at the Gabba, was one of his most heartfelt, coming as it did in the wake of a first-innings dismissal which encouraged a debate over whether his back ailment was causing him problems against short-pitched bowling. He survived a none-too-torrid examination against the short ball before restating his quality with an innings of polished, unfettered strokeplay.Warner’s 124 from 154 balls was equally brisk. He was just as assertive as Clarke, his footwork surely as crisp as it ever has been in his Test career as he attacked England’s limited attack with verve and selectivity. He brought up his hundred with runs off Joe Root, but unlike last summer, on this occasion he only punched the air.His most dismissive moment – planting Stuart Broad straight for six – was followed in the same over by his downfall. His dismissal, caught at the wicket, had an element of one-day cricket about it but it was a rare blemish by Warner, who has rarely played a more measured Test innings.Michael Clarke made his 25th Test hundred and his sixth against England to ram home the advantage•Getty Images

England’s aggressive tactics against Clarke, not short of initial verbals, even extended to allowing Warner singles to get him back on strike – quite an insult for a world-class batsman with a Test average the top side of 50 and an excellent record at the Gabba. During his innings, he joined Ricky Ponting and Greg Chappell as the only batsmen to have made more than 1000 Test runs at the ground and his average there hovers around 100. Rarely has such an accomplished batsman been tactically manoeuvred on to strike in such a fashion.Clarke had decided to take on the pull shot from the outset and he did so with equanimity. England soon abandoned the policy – only Broad looked capable of enforcing it anyway – and they were unable to make much of an impression on a pitch that remained in excellent order for batsmen.Broad never quite revved up the short-ball challenge to maximum, James Anderson, whose approach in any case tends to be more cerebral, did not get much of a look at him, and Chris Tremlett, for all his impressive build, trundled along at barely 130kph. Australia’s markedly enterprising approach to Swann’s offspin, encouraged by their head coach, Darren Lehmann, has also put England’s four-strong attack under strain. His first three overs after lunch, in two spells, cost 38, England’s sense of control destroyed. Swann needs to find an answer – and on Australian pitches he will not find it easy.England took two wickets in the morning session as Australia, 65 for 0 overnight, resumed with a lead of 224. Chris Rogers made a hash of Broad’s morning loosener, recognising the gift of a short and wide delivery but only managing to punt it to point where Carberry accepted a simple catch. Shane Watson also made little impact, making 6 in 27 balls before an attempted pull malfunctioned against Tremlett.England’s desperation was evident in the last over before lunch when they reviewed Swann’s lbw appeal against Warner only for replays to confirm that he had played the ball with his bat and the review was little better than wishful thinking. A second review against Bailey late in the afternoon session failed marginally. There was further frustration for England when for the second time in the match they were timed out as they discussed whether to review. This tougher approach seems set for the series as the umpires, refreshingly, implement the regulations.Clarke was the last of three Australia wickets to fall in an afternoon session which brought Australia 154 runs at a rate of nearly five runs an over. Steven Smith fell for 0 when Tremlett, finding bounce and away seam, summoned one of England’s best deliveries of the day. George Bailey, on Test debut, was dropped on 17 at short leg by Ian Bell, off the offspin of Joe Root, but he did not make best use of his reprieve as Swann floated a ball past his defensive push to strike off stump.Australia hastened to a declaration after tea in freewheeling fashion, adding a further 102 at a run a ball as Brad Haddin and Johnson hit about them to the delight of a jubilant Brisbane crowd. Australia’s long unbeaten record at the Gabba looks set to continue in the most emphatic fashion.
