Lá se vão 30 anos de um dos jogos mais tumultuados da história do confronto entre Botafogo-SP e Palmeiras, no estádio Santa Cruz, em Ribeirão Preto (as equipes se enfrentam neste domingo, pela segunda rodada do Paulistão). Um duelo pelo segundo turno do Campeonato Paulista de 1987 que ficou marcado para sempre por confusões ocorridas antes, durante e depois da partida.

Teve de tudo! Chuva de pedras a cada cobrança de escanteio de lado a lado, obrigando o árbitro Ilton José da Costa a paralisar o jogo duas vezes. Após o empate por 1 a 1, a delegação palmeirense precisou ser protegida no vestiário e, mesmo assim, ainda teve que enfrentar a fúria de torcedores botafoguenses no caminho até o ônibus.

Toda a confusão daquela tarde teve seu estopim na entrada do Palmeiras no gramado do Santa Cruz, com um ritual alviverde que vinha se repetindo no Paulistão e não foi “bem aceito” em Ribeirão.

Em 1987, meses após adotar definitivamente seu novo mascote, o Palmeiras passou a entrar em campo com um porco de porcelana e alguns atletas, especialmente o meia Edu Manga, cumpriam um ritual, percorrendo o campo entre uma trave e outra carregando nos braços o amuleto da sorte com alguns adereços.

A mandinga vinha dando certo e o time colecionando bons resultados. Não demorou para que o recém-adotado mascote ganhasse um status de talismã. O que ninguém previa é que o tal ritual desencadeasse uma grande confusão no Santa Cruz. Sabendo que o Palmeiras repetiria o gesto antes da partida em Ribeirão, um dos gandulas contratados pelo Botafogo premeditou um ataque ao porquinho. E não deu outra. O mascote de porcelana foi espatifado.

– Eu via aquilo tudo pela TV e não me conformava com aqueles caras deitando e rolando em todos os estádios. Pensei: quando forem a Ribeirão eu acabo com essa graça! Ninguém botou fé, até que aconteceu tudo aquilo – relembra José Carlos da Silva, que hoje tem 59 anos e trabalha como lavador de carros em um posto de combustível.

E não deu outra! Na entrada em campo, após levar o porco até o gol próximo da sua torcida, Edu Manga caminhava em direção a meta contrária, que seria defendida pelo goleiro Gasperin. Ao ver o meia do Palmeiras e um torcedor de uma das organizadas entrando na área botafoguense, o gandula invadiu o gramado e se jogou em cima de Edu, arrancando-lhe da mãos o amuleto e partindo em disparada até o túnel.

– Quando olhei para trás, quase o time inteiro deles estava correndo para me pegar. Mas eu era liso e sai em disparada sem saber o que fazer. Decidi então largar aquele bicho e jogar com força no chão e só pensei em fugir deles – conta, em meio a risos.

Nas arquibancadas, os mais de 20 mil torcedores assistiam atônitos àquela cena pastelão e, a cada pique do gandula, gritavam como se fosse gol. Enquanto os palmeirenses gritavam “pega, pega, pega”. Em vão. O gandula correu por mais de 100 metros e, ao se ver acuado, não titubeou diante do fosso de quase quatro metros de profundidade que separa o gramado da arquibancada.

– Na hora, não pensei duas vezes. Vou me jogar e seja o que Deus quiser. Alguém vai me dar a mão – conta, orgulhoso.

– O que não faltou foi gente para me puxar. Aí foi só cair nos braços da galera. Até hoje quando vou no campo o pessoal ainda lembra dessa história. Meus filhos dizem que sou louco. Mas passei alguns perrengues também depois disso – lembra.

Um deles foi ter que se esconder por alguns meses e evitar confronto com palmeirenses.

– Eu era gandula, maqueiro, segurança. Era tudo. E também torcedor que viajava para ver o Botafogo. Em São Paulo, quase um ano depois, ainda tive que me disfarçar pois um grupo de palmeirense queria me pegar na saída em um jogo no Morumbi – relembra ele, que completa:

– Eu era terrível. Quando me davam a maca eu combinava com o colega que, se um jogador do outro time simulasse contusão para sair carregado, ia pro chão mesmo. Contava até três e virava”, recorda José Carlos. “Naquele tempo o futebol dava espaço para umas maldades. Tinha até diretor que incentivava. Hoje está mais chato em tudo. Eu só não evitei gol, mas porque não tive chance.

O porco despedaçado acabou sendo reconstruído e utilizado até a semifinal do Paulistão, quando o Palmeiras foi eliminado pelo São Paulo.

– Acho que depois daquele dia passou a dar azar para eles – brinca.

Décadas depois, o xodó do Palmeiras não é de porcelana. Mais moderno, assim como o futebol, ele sobrevoa a arena alviverde nos intervalos das partidas.

Newcastle United have made contact with Fiorentina over exit-bound centre-back Nikola Milenkovic, according to Calciomercato (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Milenkovic is approaching five years at Fiorentina, having joined from Partizan Belgrade in the summer of 2017.

But the 24-year-old is now well into the final 18 months of his deal at La Viola.

The 6 foot 3 defender, reportedly the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Wolves and West Ham United in 2021, is valued at £20.7million by Transfermarkt.

Newcastle did add a centre-back to their ranks in January, paying Brighton and Hove Albion £13.5million for Dan Burn.

The report (via SW) states that Fiorentina have ‘had contact’ with Newcastle over Milenkovic in ‘recent days’.

The club have made a ‘pact’ with the Serbian, whereby he can leave if a ‘fair offer’ arrives. It therefore ‘seems almost obvious’ that he will depart at the end of the campaign.

Newcastle, though, do face competition from two Serie A giants in the form of Juventus and AC Milan.

Juve have apparently been tracking him for ‘some time’, while Milan have already formalised their interest.

The verdict

When you look at Milenkovic, what stands most out is his ability in the air. He wins 3.6 aerial duels per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the 86th percentile among positional peers in the top five European leagues (via FBRef).

In fact, of all the players who contested 100 or more in those competitions in 2020/21, he had the best success rate (via WhoScored).

Indeed, he could be a dominant presence at the heart of The Magpies’ backline for a number of years.

We’ll have to see if the allure of joining PIF’s hugely ambitious project, and of playing in the Premier League, is enough for them to see off the Italian competition.

There have been a number of strong performers for Bruno Lage’s side this season but Neves has stood out as one of the best, excelling in the middle of the park.

The 24-year-old has made 21 Premier League appearances, including 19 starts, and has averaged 2.2 tackles per game along with an 82.2% pass completion rate.

However, Neves has been linked with a move away this summer, with Manchester United arguably the front-runners at the moment.

The Latest: Journalist makes ‘massive’ claim

Spaking to GiveMeSport, Jones, a ‘transfer insider’, hinted that Neves was likely to stay put at Molineux, unless an enormous bid comes Wolves’ way.

The journalist stated: “It will take a massive offer to turn his head. He’s been very loyal in his time there. From the moment he joined the club, it was a huge show of faith.”

The Verdict: Vital he stays put

In truth, Wolves may have to accept that Neves may not be at the club forever, having been hailed as a ‘next level’ player by Lage in the recent past.

For now, though, it is crucial that they keep hold of such a prized asset, especially with fellow midfield hero Joao Moutinho turning 36 later in the year.

The control and quality that Neves brings in the middle of the park is so influential, and if he were to suddenly move on, it could leave a gaping void in a crucial area of the pitch, especially if Moutinho is phased out too.

Securing European football would certainly be a good way of ensuring that he stays, at least for another campaign or two.

Derbyshire’s batsmen struggled on a slow pitch with Wes Durston’s 39 from 35 balls the top score in a below-par total of 137 for 7.The Falcons went into their final North Group game without big hitting South African batsman Loots Bosman who was out with an injured knee and his replacement, Chesney Hughes, shared an opening stand of 41 with Durston.
