di venuto shines as wickets tumble

Durham’s Michael Di Venuto made a fine century but was the only batsman who came to terms with the Chester-le-Street pitch as 17 wickets fell on the first day against Yorkshire

16-Aug-2010
ScorecardDurham’s Michael Di Venuto made a fine century but was the only batsman who came to terms with the Chester-le-Street pitch as 17 wickets fell on the first day against Yorkshire. With both teams in contention for the title, Durham recovered from 54 for 5 to reach 213 and Yorkshire reached the close on 125 for 7.Tim Bresnan left afterwards to link up briefly with the England squad in London, but he was outshone by Ajmal Shahzad, who took a career-best 5for 51. Bresnan took only one wicket but was sent in to bat at number three and made 25 before heading for Newcastle Airport. He will return to Durham on Wednesday if not required for the Oval Test and during his absence will be replaced by Oliver Hannon-Dalby.Yorkshire put Durham in and the ball nipped around under heavy morning cloud, but Shahzad had to settle for coming on as first change. He pinned Gordon Muchall lbw with his fourth ball and two balls later produced a beautiful delivery to knock over Dale Benkenstein’s off stump.Shahzad later rattled the stumps twice in three balls as he was rewarded for bowling full and straight with just enough movement to beat the bat. The fall of 17 wickets was unlikely to have unduly worried pitch liaison officer Mike Denness. There was some variable bounce, but generally the bowling was better than the batting and only Phil Mustard gave Di Venuto, who made 117, any support for Durham.Yorkshire’s most obvious resistance came from Anthony McGrath, whose 28 not out took him past 1,000 runs for the season, as Mitch Claydon removed the openers and then Steve Harmison took three wickets. Harmison’s victims included Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale, who was given out lbw first ball but indicated that he had nicked it.Two Durham batsmen were also reluctant to depart as neither Mustard, who made 53, nor Mark Stoneman thought they had touched the ball when given out caught behind. Di Venuto edged Steve Patterson just short of Adil Rashid at second slip on 9 and grafted his way to 43 at lunch. Both he and Mustard were beaten in the first few overs of the afternoon, but as the cloud broke up runs suddenly began to flow. They put on 115 and the next highest stand was 30 for the last wicket, in which Harmison equalled his season’s best score of 4. Di Venuto was on 97 when Harmison was dropped at third slip by Jonny Bairstow off Shahzad.Although he held two catches, that was Bairstow’s second miss and it allowed Di Venuto to complete his fourth century in three seasons against Yorkshire. He turned a short ball from Richard Pyrah to fine leg for his 14th four to reach his hundred off 156 balls and straight drove the next for another four to bring up the 200 and earn a batting point.

Ambrose wins enthralling battle

If Warwickshire go on to win the County Championship title this year, they will surely look back on this match as the turning point of their campaign

If Warwickshire go on to win the County Championship title this year, they will surely look back on this match as the turning point of their campaign.Victory over Nottinghamshire pushes them up to third in the Division One table. While Nottinghamshire are 23 points above them, Warwickshire have a game in hand and a slightly easier run-in. Defeat would have left them 55 points behind and effectively concerned only with avoiding relegation.Several times in this match, it looked as if they were heading for a thrashing. Shortly before the close on the first day, Nottinghamshire were 396 for 5 and heading for a total of around 500 and then, on the second day, Warwickshire slipped to 125 for 5. A huge first-innings deficit seemed inevitable. But partly due to their determined fight back and partly due to some complacent cricket from Nottinghamshire, they dragged themselves back into the match and the title race. They had three heroes on the final day. Firstly Chris Wright, the nightwatchman whose first-innings half-century helped turn this game, contributed another 45 runs to draw the sting from the Nottinghamshire attack, before Sam Hain, an 18-year-old with a golden future, and Tim Ambrose, one of the most unsung cricketers in the county game, carved out a stand of 128 for the fifth-wicket to break the back of this run chase. Ambrose, with an unbeaten 82, was there at the end to make sure of the victory. It will be little consolation to Nottinghamshire in the short-term that they were involved in a marvellous, high-quality game of cricket on a fine pitch that provided encouragement to good players. Instead, they will know that they have squandered a fantastic opportunity to establish a season-defining lead in the table.”We’ve missed a massive opportunity,” Mick Newell, the Nottinghamshire director of cricket admitted. “We could have taken a big lead and put a really big gap between us and Warwickshire.”We bowled rubbish to Chris Wright. He made batting look comfortable, but that was largely due to our poor bowling.”Wright’s partnership with Chris Woakes in the first innings was crucial, too. We wouldn’t have enforced the follow-on, but we should have had a much larger lead.”The final day could hardly have started better for Nottinghamshire. Jonathan Trott departed in the first over, caught at short-leg fending a bouncer from Peter Siddle. For Trott, and Warwickshire, it was the nightmare scenario. It was only the second ball he faced in the day – the first had also been a bouncer – and the manner of his dismissal, after his troubles in Australia, will do nothing to quell the doubts that have dogged him since. It might be forgotten, most of all by him, how well he played a hostile spell on the third evening.Yet the wicket may have contributed to Nottinghamshire’s downfall. It appeared to suck them into a glut of short-pitched bowling which allowed the Warwickshire batsmen to counterattack. Wright crunched three successive fours off the weary-looking Andre Adams and, after bowling 14 of the first 33 overs, Siddle lost just a bit of bite.Though Samit Patel precipitated a late stumble – Warwickshire lost 3 for 6 at one stage and still required 55 more when their eighth-wicket pair came together – Ambrose held his nerve and Nottinghamshire missed the specialist spinner that might have exploited this dry, fourth-day surface.”We were crying out for Gary Keedy to bowl in tandem with Samit,” Newell admitted. “But equally we wanted to bowl first if we won the toss. It’s very difficult to get that balance right.”Nottinghamshire did have chances, even on the final day. Early in his innings, Hain enjoyed two moments of fortune against Siddle. Once he was struck on the body; another time he popped the ball inches short of short-leg.Then, we he had 18, he prodded forward to one from Patel that left him and edged to first slip. Riki Wessels was unable to cling on to the chance, though, and Hain went on to compile an increasingly classy half-century. Had the chance been taken, Warwickshire would have been 148 for 5.Ambrose was nerveless, though. With Adams way below his best and Harry Gurney unable to sustain the pressure applied by the accurate Patel, Siddle and the admirable Luke Fletcher were forced to shoulder the burden and, as they tired, the run-scoring opportunities began to flow. Ambrose, determined in defence, latched on to anything short with his favoured cut shot and, for the second time in the match, the Nottinghamshire fielding flagged under pressure.”That was a great advert for domestic cricket,” Dougie Brown, the Warwickshire director of cricket said afterwards. “Division One is as strong as I can remember it, with lots of good players getting an opportunity to show what they can do.”We’re right back in the race now. We bowled as badly as I’ve ever seen us bowl in the first innings and, at that point, there was only one winner. But Chris Woakes was outstanding. He is a natural leader and an impressive bloke. And Nottinghamshire relinquished a position of strength.”Trott, meanwhile, will sit out Thursday’s T20 match against Northamptonshire. Not only are his knees causing him some discomfort, but he has yet to practise white ball skills in the nets. He will return to the side for the Championship game against Durham. “A Warwickshire side with Jonathan Trott in it is a stronger side,” Brown said.Warwickshire are also awaiting news of their captain, Jim Troughton. He has experienced more pain in his back since returning to the first team after surgery and saw a specialist on Wednesday. With his team back among the six actively involved in the Championship race, the club dearly needs his leadership and batting.

Moeen provides new spin for England

Moeen Ali is the main spin option available to Alastair Cook and, if all goes to plan, will become the first England bowler to deliver a doosra in a Test match

Moeen Ali is expected to bat at No. 6 but his ability to bowl the doosra has attracted interest•Getty Images

Moeen Ali has played mock Tests in his garden with his brother and watched his cousin, Kabir, make his one England appearance in 2003. Now he is on the brink of the real thing for himself. One of three uncapped players in England’s squad, Moeen is pencilled in to bat at No. 6 against Sri Lanka but it is his bowling that is generating the most interest in the post Graeme Swann era. He is the main spin option available to Alastair Cook and, if all goes to plan, will become the first England bowler to deliver a doosra in a Test match. In a sense that shows how far behind the times English cricket is. The sight of a doosra is hardly novel these days – it was first purveyed by Saqlain Mushtaq back in the mid-90s – but there remains an inherent unease about the unorthodox so Moeen is seen as something of a trailblazer. English cricket did have a flirtation with the delivery when Alex Loudon had his brief foray into the international scene, but Moeen’s is something closer to the real deal even though his first-class bowling average remains a tick over 40.The confidence is partly because of the identity of his tutor: Saeed Ajmal. The Pakistan offspinner has happily imparted his wisdom to Moeen, who has been using the delivery with increasing regularity this season. Their methods differ a little. Moeen explained that his grip is subtly different to Ajmal’s, who gets more bounce at a quick pace, but Moeen is confident that both those attributes will come with practice.”It’s coming on well. I worked really hard with it over the last month or so, so hopefully if I feel confident and get a couple of good days in practice then I’ll be ready to bowl it,” he said. “I bowled about eight in the last Champo game and in Twenty20s I’ve been bowling five or six each game. So far every one’s landed.””If I was to play a one-day or Twenty20 game tomorrow I’d be 100% confident to do it. I think the four-day cricket’s a little bit different, so I just want to make sure I get two good practice days in and I’ll be confident to bowl it.”He has yet to pick up a wicket with the doosra – “a few plays and misses and I had a close lbw that bounced a bit high,” he said – and believes that there is an element of kidology to having it in his armoury.”If you have something different or mystery or even just a little bit of doubt in the batsman’s head, it makes a massive difference,” he said. “If you get one early, the guys hesitate to use their feet and stuff, knowing that you’ve got it. Even if you don’t bowl it.”Saeed says half the time he doesn’t have to bowl it because people just know that he’s got it. I remember a couple of years ago I bowled a normal offspinner that went straight, and somebody had told the umpire that I could bowl a doosra, he thought it was a doosra and gave the guy lbw.”The doosra, however, does come with baggage. There are those who believe it cannot be bowled legally, although Moeen said that umpires in county cricket have told him there is no change in his action between the deliveries he bowls.Amid all this, it also has to be remembered that Moeen remains a batsman first, even if the gap is closing, with a first-class average this season of 74.20. “I’m not sure I’m mystery yet but hopefully in time I can become a mystery bowler,” he said. “I am here to do exactly what I’ve been doing at Worcester and doing a good job with the bat and ball.”There is something ironic, too, that the excitement generated by Moeen’s Test debut is coming against Sri Lanka, a team who have just had to endure another of their bowlers being put under scrutiny for a suspect action and also after Ajmal was less-than-impressed when Stuart Broad became engaged with Michael Vaughan over Twitter in response to a still image of Ajmal’s action.Sri Lanka do not seem overly perturbed by what surprises Moeen may have on offer; for Sri Lanka batsmen, facing spin in whatever form it comes does not create nightmares. There was a wry smile from Lahiru Thirimanne, the vice-captain, when he was asked about Moeen’s potential to cause problems. “I don’t think the Lord’s wicket will turn,” he said. “We just want to concentrate more on pace. We’re good at playing spin, so we just want to concentrate on fast bowlers.”You sense that Sri Lanka will try to dominate Moeen when he comes into the attack, but you also sense that Moeen will quite like that challenge.

Only ‘massive offer’ could turn Neves’ head

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves would only potentially leave the club this summer if a ‘massive offer’ is lodged, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Neves enjoying superb season

There have been a number of strong performers for Bruno Lage’s side this season but Neves has stood out as one of the best, excelling in the middle of the park.

The 24-year-old has made 21 Premier League appearances, including 19 starts, and has averaged 2.2 tackles per game along with an 82.2% pass completion rate.

However, Neves has been linked with a move away this summer, with Manchester United arguably the front-runners at the moment.

The Latest: Journalist makes ‘massive’ claim

Spaking to GiveMeSport, Jones, a ‘transfer insider’, hinted that Neves was likely to stay put at Molineux, unless an enormous bid comes Wolves’ way.

The journalist stated: “It will take a massive offer to turn his head. He’s been very loyal in his time there. From the moment he joined the club, it was a huge show of faith.”

The Verdict: Vital he stays put

In truth, Wolves may have to accept that Neves may not be at the club forever, having been hailed as a ‘next level’ player by Lage in the recent past.

For now, though, it is crucial that they keep hold of such a prized asset, especially with fellow midfield hero Joao Moutinho turning 36 later in the year.

The control and quality that Neves brings in the middle of the park is so influential, and if he were to suddenly move on, it could leave a gaping void in a crucial area of the pitch, especially if Moutinho is phased out too.

Securing European football would certainly be a good way of ensuring that he stays, at least for another campaign or two.

In other news, one Wolves player is reportedly ‘in the sights’ of another club. Find out who it is here.
