Glasgow Rangers have been linked with all and sundry since Steven Gerrard’s side stormed to the summit of the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers have just ten days to bring in any new signings, although Gerrard has hinted that there will be more outs than ins at Ibrox in the January transfer window.

But that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from churning out new transfer stories, with Preston North End duo Ben Davies and Daniel Johnson among the names tipped to make the switch to the 54-time Scottish champions.

It appears Gerrard was targeting a new name for Rangers’ defence, as Filip Helander, 27, and Leon Balogun, 32, have been sidelined by knocks and Nikola Katic remains a long-term absentee.

However, despite several outlets suggesting otherwise, a recent report from the Press Association has subsequently revealed that a club insider has made it clear that Rangers have ‘no interest’ in Preston’s Davies, dealing a blow to Gerrard’s chances of finding suitable defensive cover.

If Ross Wilson and co. are serious about stopping Celtic from winning ten in a row and competing in the Europa League, then Davies is the man who could seriously help the club.

This season, the 25-year-old defender is averaging 1.2 tackles and 1.4 interceptions in 17 appearances across all competitions, with his 6.83 WhoScored rating ranking him sixth out of Alex Neil’s side – his centre-back partner Patrick Bauer is one of only five players to have a higher rating.

Rangers signed Balogun after he left Wigan Athletic as a free agent at the end of last season – since his arrival last year, Gerrard has opted to go with him as part of his preferred defensive partnership with Connor Goldson, acting as a shield wall for veteran goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

Whilst the Nigeria international has shown he can mix it with the best in Scottish football, the same can’t be said for George Edmundson, who has fallen down the pecking order under Gerrard this season.

Although there’s a case to be made that Edmundson still has room to improve at the age of 23, he has largely struggled to impress for the Gers on the very few occasions he has made an appearance after he endured an afternoon to forget against Motherwell at the start of this season, finishing the game with a low 5.8 SofaScore rating – the worst out of any player from either side.

It’s perhaps hardly surprising when you consider the fact that he only won one out of four duels (25%), was dribbled past once and scored an unfortunate own goal, despite playing just 14 minutes of football.

When you consider the fact he was banned for seven games after breaching lockdown regulations, it’s frankly a minor miracle that he is still at the club after his reckless behaviour both on and off the pitch.

On the other hand, Davies has demonstrated a level of confidence and maturity far beyond his years, with WhoScored pointing out that he ‘does not dive into tackles,’ emphasising the fact that he has an experienced head on his young shoulders. It’s a move that Rangers must surely consider before it’s too late.

Dele Alli’s future at Tottenham Hotspur is rather dubious.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino will step up his efforts to sign the 24-year-old for new club Paris Saint-Germain this transfer window.

It’s claimed that the out-of-favour midfielder is Pochettino’s no.1 target whilst Alli himself is keen for regular game time, though the north Londoners are reluctant to let him depart.

Spurs still remain in all cup competitions and aren’t too far behind in the title race, so will need squad depth over what will be a hectic few months of fixtures.

Though, ahead of the transfer window, the Premier League side were linked with a potential replacement for Alli in the form of on-loan Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie.

Calciomercato believe the American powerhouse is a ‘solution’ for Jose Mourinho, but one major stumbling block remains as the Serie A outfit can pull the trigger on his loan spell from Schalke 04 for just €18.5m (£16.5m) plus bonuses, which would take the overall transaction to €25m (£22.5m) with the loan fee included.

This shouldn’t deter Spurs though, they must keep an eye on the situation going forward as yes, they could replace Alli if he were to become available, but in doing so, they may well unearth another Mousa Dembele type.

It’s well-known that Mourinho wants a dynamic box-to-box maestro this month, as revealed by the Sunday Times’ Duncan Castles. And that’s where McKennie fits like a glove.

The 22-year-old is adept at playing anywhere through the middle – Bundesliga.com once compared him to Arturo Vidal, claiming the all-rounder “can deliver the goods as a No. 6, 8, or 10.”

Whilst former Huddersfield and Schalke boss David Wagner’s glowing endorsement of the 6 foot 1 enforcer is also hugely encouraging, he said:

“He’s an outstanding talent. In the No.6 or No.8 position he has the mentality, a real working mentality that you need. And he’s brave on the ball as well. He can be one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga.”

Indeed, McKennie has proven to be a rare breed of midfielder, one that can influence the game at either end of the pitch – defensively, he’s averaged 1.4 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per game, which are two key attributes tied to an anchorman heralding the backline, whilst in attack, he has averaged 0.9 shots and 0.9 key passes per game this term, via WhoScored.

It means he is getting far enough forward to create chances for his strikers as well as having a pop himself.

Across 19 appearances, McKennie has contributed towards five goals, which is a great return considering Spurs duo Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso have only hit that number between them in the Premier League when playing a very similar role.

A lack of a true no.10 in Mourinho’s formation is another reason to why Alli is pretty much void of a place right now, and having played just 74 minutes in the top-flight all season, it would be wise to move him on.

Throughout Dembele’s career, he has averaged 2.1 tackles, one interception, 1.1 key passes and 0.8 shots per game, via WhoScored, so you can see why one might draw an instant comparison between McKennie and the former Spurs man.

Given the Juventus loanee is only 22, he has plenty of time to elevate himself onto such a level, which could well be achieved at Spurs.

If Mourinho is worried about letting Alli go, then he should try and tempt McKennie into a switch to north London. Evidently, he’d be a good candidate in the exact role he’s looking for.

Speaking in a press conference after his side’s 1-0 victory over Burnley on Saturday (via football.london), Irons boss David Moyes confirmed that GSB and co have attempted to land January signings so far this transfer window – dropping the four-word message that West Ham United have ‘already made big inquiries’. 

The Scotsman, speaking candidly after the Hammers edged past Burnley at the London Stadium, addressed growing speculation surrounding West Ham’s hunt for a new striker.

A plethora of forwards throughout the United Kingdom and Europe have been linked, with Boulaye Dia, Joshua King, Marko Arnautovic and Olivier Giroud arguably the most notable.

This comes after club record signing Sebastien Haller left east London for pastures new earlier this month, signing a deal with Ajax worth a reported £20.25 million (BBC).

David Moyes confirms West Ham transfer inquiries

Given West Ham’s need for more options up front, taking into account Michail Antonio’s fitness issues, Moyes has now confirmed that inquiries have indeed been made by GSB to ease the burden going forward.

“We’ve already made big inquiries and offers for players at clubs, which have not been accepted or obviously we would have signed somebody,” explained the manager, via football.london.

“It is not as if we are not trying to that, we have tried. But I need to get players who I think can make a difference and I want it to be someone who I think can help us.

“If I don’t, then I might need to look short term, just to get me through to get me another player, but if not, then I will use the young players or I will have to try and use someone else from the squad and see how we can do it, but if Mick [Antonio] can gain his real form from where he has been in recent months, then that will be a big thing for us and today, he is getting closer.”

While Moyes has confirmed that the hunt for new January additions is taking place, he appears to be open to any possibility – whether that be a short term option or someone who can perform consistently for seasons to come.

Who West Ham will manage to land remains to be seen, if anyone, but it will certainly be interesting to find out.

Newcastle United host Leicester City at St. James’ Park on Sunday looking to snap a five-game winless streak against one of the Premier League’s top-four sides.

Steve Bruce will be without influential midfielder Isaac Hayden for the Foxes’ trip to Tyneside after the Arsenal product was shown a fifth yellow card of the top-flight season last time out against Liverpool.

The Magpies were able to claim a point at home to Jurgen Klopp’s Reds with a supreme defensive showcase, but had lost two of their previous three league fixtures and were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Championship side Brentford in a solemn festive run.

In Bruce’s search for a first win since a late Dwight Gayle effort beat West Bromwich Albion in December, the United boss will have to consider changes. So, with that in mind, here’s a potential line-up the Magpies could field at home to Leicester on Sunday…

Karl Darlow will expect to maintain his 100% record between the sticks against the Foxes having recorded a third clean sheet of the season at home to Liverpool, but he will be aware that Martin Dubravka is back breathing down his neck ahead of a potential return from injury in next week’s FA Cup clash with Arsenal.

Bruce is unlikely to favour changes to the five-strong defence which thwarted Klopp’s champions, either, with captain Jamaal Lascelles also eying the Emirates encounter for his return after testing positive for coronavirus.

Though Hayden’s absence will force alterations in the engine room, with Sean Longstaff likely to earn a recall to the starting line-up for the first time since drawing 1-1 with Fulham.

Longstaff has watched the Toon’s last two Premier League fixtures from the bench whilst his younger brother, Matty Longstaff, returned to the senior fold, yet should partner the 20-year-old and Jonjo Shelvey versus the Foxes.

A change to a three-man midfield line with Jacob Murphy falling out of favour would see Joelinton return to partner Callum Wilson upfront after playing the full 90 minutes against Liverpool at left-midfield.

Joelinton scored his sole Premier League goal of the season back in November against Crystal Palace, while summer signing Wilson has found the net on eight occasions but only once in his last four outings.
