What’s the word?

According to The Independent’s Nick Mashiter, the Hammers are keen on signing Norwich City defender Max Aarons this summer as David Moyes plans for the future amid their top-four challenge.

It’s thought that the Championship league leaders will demand in the region of £30m and there is also interest from Premier League rivals Spurs as well as Everton.

However, there is a belief that the England U21 international would like to remain in the south, so that could rule out the Merseysiders.

Waste of resources

There is no denying that Aarons is a huge talent with major potential but a move for him this summer would be a complete waste of money on West Ham’s part as they already have Vladimir Coufal, whilst Ben Johnson’s emergence is encouraging, too.

The 5 foot 10 dynamo, who is currently valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, was dubbed a “special player” with an “unbelievable future” by Canaries boss Daniel Farke back in December, and previous interest from Bayern Munich only goes to show just how good he could become.

You would imagine that £30m will be a huge chunk of Moyes’ budget this summer, irrespective of whether or not they qualify for Europe, especially with many teams still dealing with the financial implications post-pandemic, such as having no supporters in the ground all season.

The Irons still desperately need a striker as they are still yet to replace Sebastien Haller, who left for Ajax in January. GSB failed in their attempts to bring a new forward to the London Stadium and it has left Moyes in dire straits up top.

Michail Antonio is West Ham’s only recognised striker and he’s unable to keep fit. His recent hamstring problem is set to keep him out for the remainder of the season, which would mean he’s only played 21 times in the top-flight this term.

That should be their top priority, and if David Sullivan and David Gold are to spend £30m anywhere, then it has to be up top. Otherwise, they will be dealing Moyes yet another silly blow to their fortunes.

Coufal and Johnson is a decent tandem on the right for several years to come. On the other hand, a perennially injured 31-year-old on his own up top is not the answer for the long-term.

O Náutico recebeu o líder da competição Atlético Goianiense na noite desta sexta-feira e conseguiu uma importante vitória para voltar ao G4 da Série B. Jogando na Arena Pernambuco, o Timbu contou com dois gols de Rony para vencer por 2 a 1 e subir na tabela. Magno Cruz descontou já no fim.

Com a vitória, o Náutico voltou para o G4 e agora está na quarta colocação, com 54 pontos. Mesmo com a derrota, o Atlético Goianiense segue na liderança com 61 pontos, três a mais que o Vasco da Gama, que está na segunda colocação.

As equipes voltam a campo no sábado da semana que vem. O Atlético Goianiense terá o clássico contra o Goiás, no Serra Dourada, às 17h. No mesmo dia, o Náutico visita o CRB, no Estádio Rei Pelé, às 17h30.

O JOGO

O primeiro tempo começou quente e com o time da casa quase marcando com Bergson, que acertou a trave após rebote da zaga adversária. Rony também teve a sua chance e mandou pela linha de fundo. O Atlético respondeu com Michel em saída rápida, porém na hora de finalizar parou nas mãos de Júlio César. Antes do intervalo, Gilsinho achou Júnior Viçosa na área e o atacante de voleio acertou a rede pelo lado de fora.

Na volta para a etapa final, logo no primeiro minuto, Rony pegou de primeira após cruzamento de Vinícius e abriu o placar para o Timbu. Os visitantes sentiram o gol e o Náutico aproveitou para ampliar novamente com Rony, aproveitando trapalhada da defesa rubro-negra. No fim, Magno Cruz ainda diminuiu para os visitantes, mas não foi suficiente para evitar a derrota.

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl believes the push for a European Super League is not yet over despite the plans falling apart within 48 hours.

Within two days, the European Super League fell apart as Chelsea and Manchester City announced their withdrawal from the project (The Guardian). Still, it was a venture that shocked the football world.

While Hasenhuttl believes the end result is good news for the game, he suggested the plans may return in another form. He said (Sky Sports):

“I think, in the end, it was a very good week for football because the way the fans and everybody who loves football bounced back was amazing to watch.

“I think maybe it was the worst idea I have ever heard. I think it was maybe underestimating the power of the fans, how much they love their football and how much football is for everybody.

“In the end, we are all happy that the first battle is won but I think it’s not over yet.”

Probably right

The Super League project was, quite frankly, an absolute disaster. Florentino Perez felt he was the saviour of football – and he appeared to take that description to heart as he was metaphorically crucified after appearances selling the deal on Spanish television. From that point on, it was hard to see how it could succeed.

However, while there may now be some respite from the constant rumours of a breakaway league, the thirst for more money and power will not have totally evaporated from the continent’s big clubs. We now need reforms made to the game to stop this kind of thing from ever being a possibility – as long as it is, the arrogant owners of these behemoths will continue to push for it in some form.

In other news, Southampton are interested in this Serie A midfielder.

Liverpool could be set to add Joaquin Correa to their extensive portfolio of attacking options this summer.

According to Il Messaggero [via Inside Futbol], the Reds are interested in the Lazio forward and could sign him for as little as €40m (£35m).

With current Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri previously hinting that he is not happy with his current role at Anfield, Correa could well be the perfect replacement.

At the age of 26, the Argentine has developed a reputation as an exciting and confident player with the ball. Having joined Lazio in 2018 from Sevilla, the £27m-rated winger has gone on to make 110 appearances for the Italian giants in the time since, scoring 25 goals and setting up a further 17.

As a matter of fact, he is currently in the midst of another profitable campaign at the Stadio Olimpico, with 11 goal contributions so far throughout 2020/21.

Whilst that might not seem overly impressive, it must be noted that Shaqiri has only managed to notch a total of 17 goal contributions in his three years at Anfield. It goes without saying that, should the Swiss international decide to leave Merseyside in the future, Correa would be an excellent replacement.

Capped on five occasions for the Argentina national side, the Lazio man has earned praise from his compatriots. Former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron has kept a close eye on Correa’s development, stating that he is “crushing it” whilst in Italy.

Indeed, the Reds should be well aware of his talents, with the winger having swept in an equalising goal in a 2-2 draw between Sevilla and Liverpool in the Champions League at Anfield back in 2017.

Whilst already being blessed with a talented squad of forward-thinking players at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp could certainly use the addition of Correa this summer, especially if he does indeed lose Shaqiri.

Plenty of Arsenal fans have been reacting on social media to an injury update on Kieran Tierney.

The Gunners ran out 3-0 winners over Sheffield United on Sunday evening, with Alexandre Lacazette scoring twice and Gabriel Martinelli netting on his first start since January.

However, after the game, Mikel Arteta confirmed that Tierney is ‘probably out for the rest of the season’ through injury. The left-back was forced off with a knee problem in the recent 3-0 defeat to Liverpool, and it seems as if that issue could keep him out of the Gunners’ remaining fixtures this term.

Arteta used defensive midfielder Granit Xhaka at left-back at Bramall Lane to fill the void, with the Swiss international putting in a solid display in Yorkshire, ending with a 7.10 WhoScored rating.

Após o revés, o comandante apareceu na sala de imprensa e fez a sua análise do jogo. Na visão do treinador, o primeiro tempo foi positivo.

‘O primeiro tempo foi muito bom. São coisas positivas em tão pouco tempo. Não seria correto fazer uma avaliação em cima dos jogos, pelo pouco tempo de trabalho. E, independentemente dos resultados, foram partidas bem aproveitadas. A equipe teve equilíbrio e maturidade’, afirmou.

Com o jogo diante do Xeneize, o Furacão encerrou a sua pré-temporada em solo portenho. No total, o time de Dorival Junior saiu com um empate e uma derrota.

‘De um modo geral, foi um ótimo torneio. Enfrentamos duas grandes equipes do futebol mundial. Acredito que demonstramos novamente uma boa partida, mesmo com o pouco tempo de trabalho. Mantivemos uma boa atuação e isso é uma amostra do que a equipe poderá fazer ao longo do ano’, concluiu.
