Anil Kumble, the India captain, has hit out at the media’s “uncharitable” comments on his fitness, calls for retirement, and his performance as a player and captain following India’s hard-fought draw in the first Test against Australia in Bangalore. Kumble went wicketless in a total of 51 overs and a shoulder injury restricted him to only eight overs in the second innings. In his syndicated column, Kumble said the media attention reminded him of the tour of Australia in January when he had to deal with several off-field issues, including the controversial Sydney Test which was marred by alleged racist remarks and cheating claims. On the vexed issue of retirement, he clarified that he will quit on his own terms.”What has also been somewhat unexpected is the way the Indian media seems to have delighted in analysing and sensationalising every little action, remark or gesture,” Kumble wrote. “I didn’t really expect to have to go through this all over again on my home turf.”That time, ten months ago, saw me unfortunately having to split my time between playing cricket and handling a host of unnecessary off-the-field issues, instead of being able to concentrate on playing the game and handling my team.”Kumble said he was confident of recovering fully in time for the second Test in Mohali starting on Friday. Dilip Vengsarkar, the former selection chairman, had slammed Kumble for not declaring his injury before the Bangalore Test and said he should not have played.”And for those who are wondering, I’m feeling good. I am hopeful the shoulder injury I picked up during the match should be fine by the second Test and that it will be business as usual thereafter,” Kumble said. “When I decide to make a final bow, I’ll go on my own terms.”Kumble felt the criticism of India’s performance in the Test was a little too harsh. Highlighting the positives, he said the bowlers did well to restrict Australia to 430 and praised Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan for scoring half-centuries after the seniors had failed in the first innings.”Actually, I’m pretty happy with the way things panned out after we lost the toss. From the look of the pitch, this was a track on which 600 could have been made batting first. That the Australians took five sessions and more to make about 400 is a reflection on how wonderfully well our bowling unit performed.”Harbhajan and Zaheer stood up and made sure they not only cut down the lead, but also showed everyone that our tail can handle this Australian attack with ease. It may also be noted that our four senior batsmen, Sachin and Rahul, Sourav and Laxman, all played a part in this Test.”He also singled out the bowling of Zaheer and Ishant Sharma – they shared 13 of the 16 wickets to fall – who “bowled with heart and spirit to shape the way this series might go.” Looking ahead to the Mohali Test, he said the team certainly didn’t lack self belief.”I can’t promise things I have no control over, but the one thing that I can guarantee is that I won’t give up the fight. We won’t. The belief that I have in my team, and the belief that the team has in me is what matters the most.”

WBA: Ismael drops Matt Clarke injury update

West Bromwich Albion manager Valerien Ismael has dropped an injury update on Matt Clarke.

What’s the latest?

Speaking after Albion’s win over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, the Frenchman revealed that he and his medical team will be assessing the extent of the centre-back’s hamstring injury, which the 24-year-old picked up when chasing a loose ball shortly before half-time in the fixture, in order to determine when the Brighton & Hove Albion loanee will return to action.

As cited by Birmingham Live, the 45-year-old said: “The only negative is the injury to Matty Clarke. I don’t know what’s going on, we need to assess him. We’ll see how bad the injury is.

“Yes, it’s really sad, but I hope it’s not too bad. The good thing is that we have the international break next week, so hopefully we get him back after the international break. This is my expectation, this is my hope.”

Fans will be gutted

Considering how impressive Clarke has been following his move to The Hawthorns earlier this summer, West Brom fans may be gutted to hear that the defender looks set to miss the Baggies’ Carabao Cup clash against Arsenal on Wednesday, as well as the Championship fixture with Peterborough United on Saturday.

Indeed, over his three league appearances for Albion thus far, the £2.7m-rated man has averaged 2.3 interceptions, one tackle and 2.7 clearances and has won a whopping 7.3 duels per game, with these returns earning the centre-back an average SofaScore match rating of 7.03.

Although the Carabao Cup is not likely to be a priority for Albion in a season in which they are chasing automatic promotion, and a trip to Peterborough unlikely to be the most difficult fixture of their Championship campaign, the absence of the £21k-per-week Clarke will still be felt by Ismael. The manager will certainly be hoping that the player who Brighton boss Graham Potter dubbed a “quality” talent will be ready for action shortly after the upcoming international break.

Sami leaves Yorkshire under a cloud

Andrew Miller reports on the first day of the Championship relegation clash between Sussex and Yorkshire at Hove

Andrew Miller at Hove24-Sep-2008Yorkshire 84 for 6 (Sami 3-39) v Sussex
ScorecardBy the close of a frustrating but ultimately dramatic first day at Hove, Yorkshire’s batsmen were left thanking the weather gods that a mere 38 overs had been slotted into the day. After being asked to bat first, they slid to a parlous 84 for 6, losing three wickets for six runs in the last three overs of the day, when many at the ground – including perhaps the players themselves – had begun to switch off for the evening.Instead, when the close did finally arrive (with the skies arguably as clear as they had been all day) it was Sussex, the reigning County Champions, who left the field with a spring in their step as they sensed the ignominy of relegation retreating with every wicket. Instead it is Yorkshire who now find themselves deep in the mire, their only immediate prospect of salvation lying in the performance of their fellow strugglers, Kent, at Canterbury.Earlier this month, Sussex bade a fond farewell to Mushtaq Ahmed, the Pakistani legspinner whose wiles had been instrumental in their feat of three Championship titles in five seasons. Today it was his replacement and fellow countryman, Mohammad Sami, who took the plaudits with 3 for 39 in 18 overs of sustained hostility. He dismissed Yorkshire’s top-scorer, Andrew Gale, in his first over after lunch, then returned late in the day to bowl Jacques Rudolph and Gerard Brophy in consecutive overs. Jason Lewry then stole in with a beautiful inswinger to trap Steven Patterson for a duck and leave Yorkshire floundering for an escape route.Even allowing for the wickets that fell, it was a bitty sort of a day on the South Coast. Play was delayed for an hour by blustery rain, and by tea less than a session’s-worth of overs had been possible in three brief bursts. The bulk of Yorkshire’s run-scoring was done by their opener, Gale, whose 31 from 52 balls was a misleadingly free-flowing affair. He scored all of his team’s runs off the bat in the 7.3 overs that constituted the morning session, but then – after rifling Robin Martin-Jenkins through the covers for the pick of his five boundaries – he fell in the second over after the break, caught behind swishing outside off at Sami. With him went Yorkshire’s best hope of any momentum.Gale’s team-mates found the going much tougher. Lewry opened up with a typically economical first spell, conceding seven runs in four overs while picking up Adam Lyth for a tenth-ball duck, as he played down the wrong line to an outswinger and lost his off stump.Anthony McGrath survived to lunch, then got off the mark from his 18th delivery with an uneasy fence into the leg-side off Sami. But, having doubled his tally from his 30th ball, he fell two deliveries later, as Martin-Jenkins found some lift on off stump, and Ollie Rayner at first slip scooped up a good low catch. McGrath looked suspiciously at the pitch as he left, perhaps hinting that the ball had stopped on his shot.Rudolph and Brophy survived a further five overs before the clouds rolled back over Hove and the umpires took the players off once again. A long and tedious interlude ensued, as the rain stayed away but the umpires remained suspicious of the bad light, but eventually, at 5.10pm, they came back out for one last burst. It could yet prove to have been the decisive spell of the summer for both sides. Neither Rudolph – Yorkshire’s Player of the Year – nor Brophy looked remotely comfortable as the ball fizzed past the edge with alarming regularity, and when Rudolph inside-edged Sami onto his stumps while attempting a drive, the backbone of their innings disintegrated.

Fico feliz, cara.

Rugby league coach considers cricket move

Twenty20 is always looking for new ideas and there is a chance a Sydney rugby league coach could end up passing on his methods

Cricinfo staff10-Aug-2008Twenty20 is always looking for new ideas and there is a chance a Sydney rugby league coach could end up passing on his methods at the Indian Cricket League. Jock Campbell, the former Australia fitness mentor and current high performance director at the ICL, has been speaking with Steve Folkes of the Bulldogs.Folkes, who has been busy dealing with the high-profile exit of the player Sonny Bill Williams, is looking for a new job and considering a move to India as a fitness co-ordinator. “It would be a good change,” Folkes said in the Sydney Morning Herald.”It’s still very early but it’s an option. I love league but this season has definitely worn me down and a change would be nice.” While the Indian Premier League attracts most of the attention, the ICL is an unofficial competition that mixes Twenty20 and 50-over tournaments throughout the year.

England 'disappointed' by India itinerary

The England board has expressed “disappointment” with the proposed itinerary for the tour of India at the end of the year

The England board has expressed “disappointment” with the proposed itinerary for the tour of India at the end of the year.A statement from the board said that “despite representations, the itinerary doesn’t offer the thousands of supporters who follow the England team abroad, the opportunity to experience more of the great cricket grounds of India.”The main concern surrounds the grounds nominated to host the seven-match one-day series. Instead of a tour that takes in such stadia as Eden Gardens in Kolkata and the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, England will reprise their 2005-06 experience with trips to venues such as Jamshedpur and Guwahati in the far east of the country, where their one-day international had to be abandoned due to rioting in the stands. The highlight of the short Test series is that Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium will host its first Test for 35 years.England were the last visiting team to play a Test there back in 1972-73. A dispute over tickets between the local board and the Cricket Club of India, which owns the ground, led to the birth of the Wankhede Stadium nearby, which staged its first Test in 1975.The Brabourne hosted three one-day internationals between 1989 and 1995, before playing host to five ICC Champions Trophy games 11 years later. The last international match played there was a one-off Twenty20 international between India and Australia last year.Proposed itineraryNovember 6, 2008 England arrive in Mumbai

Pundit urges Man United to sign Ndidi if Pogba seals exit

Steve Howey reckons Manchester United should target Wilfred Ndidi if Paul Pogba leaves Old Trafford before the transfer window slams shut.

Pogba, who is enjoying his second spell with the Red Devils after sealing a then-world record transfer from Juventus five years ago, has been heavily linked with exiting the club throughout the summer.

French giants Paris Saint-Germain have been interested in prising Pogba away from Old Trafford, with the midfielder’s agent Mino Raiola claiming last December that a move is needed.

According to French media outlet Le 10 Sport, Raiola has even offered Pogba to United’s arch-rivals Liverpool.

Pogba has entered the final 12 months of his £290,000-per-week contract and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are facing up to the prospect of seeing the France international depart for free next summer.

The 28-year-old has already rejected a new deal at United, according to Canal Supporters, with the report suggesting Pogba wants a move to PSG.

Howey believes the Red Devils should sign Ndidi, who has made 146 PL appearances and won the FA Cup since joining Leicester City from Genk in 2017, if Pogba seeks pastures new.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Leicester defender Howey said: “For me, Ndidi would fit the bill if Pogba goes. I think you would have less controversy as well.”
