Jamie Dalrymple, the offspinning allrounder, has returned to Middlesex following his exit from Glamorgan in November.Dalrymple, 30, left Lord’s in 2007 for Glamorgan, where he spent three seasons, the last two as captain. But in a tumultuous winter for Glamorgan, he quit the playing staff after he was replaced as captain by South African batsman Alviro Petersen.Dalrymple, who played 27 ODIs for England, will not be available for selection in all competitions for Middlesex until 3 June.”At a pinch we could have rushed Jamie’s return so that he was available for the start of the season,” said Middlesex director of cricket Angus Fraser. “But I did not think this was right. I believe the players who have trained hard this winter deserve the first opportunity to stake a claim for first team selection. Depriving them of this opportunity at the start of the season would have had a de-motivating effect on the squad.””I will be watching the early season closely and wish the team every success whilst trying to get up to speed as soon as possible,” said Dalrymple. “I am delighted to have been able to rejoin the club I played with for so long.”Dalrymple made 2,725 runs at 30.27 in 62 first-class matches in his previous time at Lord’s, taking 95 wickets. He also made 1,964 runs in 96 one-day matches at 31.17.”Along with his cricketing skills, Jamie is a natural leader who brings experience and know-how,” said Fraser. “The departure of Owais Shah has left us with one fewer experienced, destructive match-winning middle order batsman in limited-over cricket.”We believe Jamie can fulfil that role. He also bowls good off-spin and is a magnificent fielder. Jamie’s arrival gives our squad an excellent balance of experience and youth.”

Australia captain Ricky Ponting finds himself embroiled in controversy once again•AFP

Ricky Ponting has escaped with a reprimand from the ICC after the incident that resulted in a damaged television in Australia’s dressing room during the win over Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad on Monday. Ponting was not fined and there was no formal hearing, after he accepted a level one charge and the reprimand from the match referee Roshan Mahanama.Ponting was visibly frustrated as he left the field after being run out, and he threw his groin protector at his kit bag, only for it bounce up and hit the corner of the television. The Australian camp stressed that the damage to the TV was accidental and he immediately reported it, but the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) still filed a complaint with the BCCI.Ponting was found to have breached clause 2.1.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an international match”. However, while the level one charge could have carried a fine of up to 50% of Ponting’s match fee, the ICC accepted that the incident was unintentional.”Ricky knows that his action was in breach of the code, involving a brief moment of frustration,” Mahanama said. “That said, it was clear that the damage he caused was purely accidental and without malice, he apologised shortly after the incident at the ground and immediately agreed to pay for the damage.”It was the second time in two months that Ponting found himself charged with a level one offence, after he was fined 40% of his match fee for the Boxing Day Test, over a prolonged debate with the umpire Aleem Dar over a decision review that went against the Australians. The latest incident has captured the attention of the local media, with several newspapers reporting on the morning after the game that Ponting had smashed the TV with his bat, which was not the case.

Vettori considering three-spinner attack

Daniel Vettori has said that making the World Cup semi-finals six times is a huge achievement for a small nation like New Zealand

Firdose Moonda in Colombo28-Mar-2011Daniel Vettori would make a bad bridesmaid. He wouldn’t fit the role of the person dressed up to walk down the aisle behind someone more important. He is the important one.At the best of times, Vettori is abrupt – probably not intentionally, but because it’s part of his character. He is a no-nonsense kind of guy who gives a straight answer to most questions. Whether he expected to be sitting in a press conference as the only non-subcontinental team captain at the World Cup semi-finals, he won’t say, but he seems rightly annoyed with being asked if his team is excited to have got this far.”It’s the semi-final of the World Cup, everyone is ecstatic,” he said dryly. Of course they are. New Zealand have proven themselves to be one of the top four teams in the tournament. They beat the odds. After a group stage which saw them record victory over only one major team, Pakistan, and get thumped by two others, Sri Lanka and Australia, they came into the quarter-finals as one of the weaker sides. Very few people expected them to raise their game enough to beat South Africa and even when talking about that victory, very few people say that it was New Zealand who won the game. Most say it was South Africa who lost it.Vettori doesn’t really want to talk about that anymore, because he has more important things on his mind. “We need to move on pretty quickly from the South Africa game. We’re proud of our achievement, but we need to concentrate on the semi-final.” Most people paid him very little attention when he made that point, probably because most don’t expect New Zealand to get past the semi-finals. That’s partly because they are playing a very strong Sri Lanka side and partly because this will be their sixth World Cup semi-final, without having ever made the final.’We’re proud of our achievement [beating South Africa], but we need to concentrate on the semi-final’ – Daniel Vettori•Associated Press

“Everyone wants to talk about our record [of always going out at the semi-final stage], but this is an amazing achievement for a small country,” Vettori said, which hinted that he was satisfied enough with having come this far. He recovered quickly though. “We have our expectations, it’s irrelevant what people say. We reached the Champions Trophy final in 2009, there we went one step further.” New Zealand were horribly outplayed in that match, losing to Australia by six wickets. But, it was an important exercise for them, because they played in a final of an ICC tournament – for the first time since the 2000 Champions Trophy, which they won, beating India – and experienced the pressures of a do-or-die encounter of a different kind.Vettori knows consistency is the key. “When we’ve won well, we’ve followed it up with a poor performance,” he said referring to the group stage. “We’ve got to make sure we have another big performance in the bag because Sri Lanka will be very strong in home conditions.”Sri Lanka have looked the side to beat and on a pitch where they asserted their authority over England, they will be tough to handle. Vettori is toying with the idea of picking three spinners for the match. “The fact that it’s a used wicket may allow us to do that, but Sri Lanka have grown up playing spin.”Getting their combination right for the semi-final will not be the trickiest thing for New Zealand, it will be making sure that that combination works well on the day. Vettori said that they were fortunate to have “one or two batsmen and a bowler or two who could stand up” in the knockouts. “It was Jesse Ryder and Jacob Oram who did it against South Africa. That made the difference and it may have to be someone else who does it now.”Vettori himself, playing in either his penultimate or final match as captain, may be the man to shoulder the responsibility. He knows it’s his last chance, as he is firm in his decision to step down as captain. “I’ve made the decision. You need fresh ideas and people get sick of you.” To leave office as the blushing bride probably doesn’t quite fit his image either, but Vettori would chose to be the bride over the bridesmaid any day.

Spot-fixing hearing endgame begins

The ICC’s anti-corruption tribunal will hear closing statements from the ICC and the three players in the spot-fixing hearing from Monday and is expected to reach a verdict on Tuesday

The endgame has begun at the ICC’s hearing into the spot-fixing inquiry involving three players from Pakistan. The anti-corruption tribunal will hear closing statements from the ICC and lawyers for Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir from Monday and is expected to reach a verdict on Tuesday.Sunday, day four of the hearings taking place in Doha, Qatar, began with the completion of the cross-examination of former captain Butt by the ICC’s lawyers. The focus then shifted to Amir who presented his defence, questioned first by his lawyer Shahid Karim before Jonathon Taylor and Ian Higgins, the ICC’s lawyers, began their questioning; Amir used an interpreter, who was present through the hearings. It is believed that the broad strategy of Amir’s defence relies on the burden of proof being on the ICC to prove their case. Indications throughout, reinforced by those familiar with the case, have been that a previously unblemished disciplinary record, and his youth, might be played upon to buffer against potential sanctions; the possibility of precisely such mitigating circumstances is present in the ICC’s anti-corruption code of conduct.Such a strategy would be, legal practitioners in Pakistan observe, entirely in keeping with Karim’s reputation as an astute litigation expert. Nevertheless, Amir’s day of questioning is thought to have been middling, neither disastrous nor outstanding for his prospects. But as the days pass and a picture of proceedings slowly emerges from a hearing which has, in the fullest sense, been held behind closed doors, it appears that the equation between Butt and Asif could be vital to how events pan out.Already it has played a part. In their opening remarks on the first day, it was reported by the , Asif and Butt’s reasons behind the deliberate, pre-planned no-balls allegedly bowled in the Lord’s Test last year differed. It also emerged that Butt, as well as being cross-examined by the ICC’s lawyers, was also questioned by Asif’s lawyer Alexander Cameron. Significantly, Amir was not questioned by either Butt’s or Asif’s lawyer on Sunday.Butt’s own defence had what was described as a “tough” cross-examination on Saturday. There are suggestions also that the questioning of one particular witness by Butt’s lawyer Yasin Patel earlier in the hearing may have hurt his client’s stance. In any case, the equation is likely to become clearer on Monday, when Asif begins his defence and will presumably be open to questioning by the ICC as well as Patel.Butt and Amir left together at the end of a day that extended nearly half an hour beyond its scheduled time. Asif, as has become usual, was the last to leave and he arrived on Sunday nearly one and a half hours before the hearing began at its scheduled time of 9 30am.After Asif completes his defence, both the ICC and the players’ lawyers will be expected to make their closing statements – and the former appear perky enough ahead of it – before the three-man tribunal of Michael Beloff QC, Justice Albie Sachs and Sharad Rao deliberate over the verdicts.

Fé na taça! Últimas vitórias no Dérbi mantêm esperança do Corinthians

A equipe do técnico Fábio Carille bateu Bragantino (2 a 0), Deportivo Lara (2 a 0), Botafogo-SP (2 a 0), o próprio Palmeiras (2 a 0) e o São Caetano (4 a 0)..

Desta vez, a decisão é fora, no campo do rival. Mas o Timão sabe que já saiu de lá comemorando e espera repetir isso no domingo…

Ganguly, Dravid shown the door, Kohli stays on

Virat Kohli is the surprise retention for his team for the next three seasons, while Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir have been released by their respective franchises

Nitin Sundar08-Dec-2010

While the retention of MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar was along expected lines, there were some other surprising calls made by the franchises•Indian Premier League

Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh and Gautam Gambhir are among the big names released by their IPL franchises, along with Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle and Andrew Symonds, while Virat Kohli is the surprise retention for his team for the next three seasons. Wednesday was the deadline for the franchises to name the players they would retain from their current squads and while there is no common thread running through the choices of players retained and released, the key factors seem to be form, brand appeal and age.Kolkata Knight Riders, Deccan Chargers and Kings XI Punjab have decided not to retain any of their players, while all the other IPL franchises have held back at least one current player. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, the 2010 finalists, have retained the maximum of four players each, in the process parting with half of the $9 million salary cap available to teams.According to the auction rules for IPL 4, teams can retain up to four players, only three of whom can be Indians. The retained players – who must have been part of the franchise’s registered squads for the 2010 season – will be valued at $1.8 million for the first player, $1.3 million for the second, $900,000 for the third and $500,000 for the fourth.Mumbai, as expected, held on to Sachin Tendulkar, the highest run-scorer of the 2010 season, offspinner Harbhajan Singh, West Indies allrounder Kieron Pollard and Sri Lanka seamer Lasith Malinga. Chennai took the Indian trio of MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina and M Vijay out of the auction, in addition to South African allrounder Albie Morkel, their regular opening bowler. Delhi Daredevils retained only Virender Sehwag, meaning Gambhir – their captain for the last two seasons – is in the auction pool. The retained players

Mumbai: Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Kieron Pollard, Lasith Malinga
Chennai: MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, M Vijay, Albie Morkel
Rajasthan: Shane Warne, Shane Watson
Delhi: Virender Sehwag
Bangalore: Virat Kohli

The most interesting choice came from Royal Challengers Bangalore whose sole retention is Virat Kohli, currently on an impressive run in ODIs. There is no place for Dravid, their icon player, nor for Anil Kumble, their captain and the head of the state association. Kolkata’s decision to drop Sourav Ganguly, the biggest cricketing name to emerge from the city and the face of the franchise’s on-field persona, is a bold step.Punjab’s decision to release all their players was expected following their dismal 2010 season, which means Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Yuvraj Singh will go under the hammer.Siddhartha Mallya, owner of the Bangalore franchise, said the decision to retain just one player was backed by financial logic. “You must realise that with retention, a big chunk of your budget gets taken away,” Mallya told ESPNcricinfo. ” Mumbai and Chennai have kept four players, which means that half their budget is gone. It finally comes down to how much money one was going to lose. We have a big balance sheet but we have lost $1.8 million for keeping one player. We still have about $7-odd million left but if we had retained four then we would have had to buy virtually an entire squad with the remaining half.”Age is not a universal disqualification. It didn’t count in Tendulkar’s case, nor in that of Shane Warne, Rajasthan’s coach and captain, who was retained by Rajasthan Royals, along with Shane Watson, a day ahead of the deadline. One franchise official explained the difference: “Warne is a global brand so that only helps to promote the franchise.”If Rajasthan opted for Warne because they have always viewed the IPL as a global brand, Mumbai went with Tendulkar and Harbhajan for their popularity. Pollard and Malinga may have made the cut on account of being impact players, who have backed up their strong Twenty20 credentials with consistent performance.Sehwag’s match-winning abilities, coupled with his rapid emergence as a brand, clearly had a say in Delhi’s decision to retain him. MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina must have been shoo-ins for Chennai following their compelling IPL and international form. Vijay’s performances, coupled with his potential to attract a strong local fan-base, must have tilted the scales in his favour, while Morkel’s proven all-round skills were always going to be an asset. If there is a stranger in this crowd, it could be Kohli. Despite his owners trumpeting his recent performances, Kohli is still work in progress. But he is young, ambitious and has the youth appeal – all qualities of the UB Group’s target audience.
