England’s bowlers again kept Pakistan in a vice-like grip, after attacking innings from Charlotte Edwards and Sarah Taylor, to secure another comprehensive victory. Danielle Wyatt claimed 3 for 16 and debutant Tash Farrant took two wickets in her second over as Pakistan were restricted to 75 for 6 from their 20 overs, well short of the 146 required for victory.Edwards opted to open with the spin of Wyatt and she claimed the wicket of Javeria Rauf with her sixth delivery. Wyatt picked up a second wicket in her second over and Farrant’s double-strike left Pakistan on 14 for 4. By the middle of the seventh over it was 23 for 5 before a 22-run stand between top-scorer Nahida Khan and Nida Dar.Wyatt removed Dar for 12 but, with 101 required from less than seven overs, the game was already up. Nahida finished on 28 from 48 balls, putting on 30 with captain Sana Mir.England’s captain, Edwards, had scored half-centuries in the two ODI wins over Pakistan earlier in the week and she set the tone again, with a 33-ball 46. Edwards and Taylor put on 57 for the second wicket and although Pakistan made regular incisions thereafter, Bismah Maroof picking up two wickets in the 16th over, Taylor held the innings together with ninth T20 half-century.

Miller, Tsotsobe keep series alive

South Africa dictated proceedings for the first time in the series as they beat Sri Lanka by 56 runs

The Report by Firdose Moonda26-Jul-2013

What a difference two overs can make. That was all it took for South Africa to stay alive in the series, have their confidence restored and beat Sri Lanka at home for the first time in close to 20 years. The 49th and 50th over of their innings produced 38 runs and took their total from middling to challenging. David Miller scored 35 of them himself – prior to this match no South African batsman had managed a score greater than 29 in the series – hitting Thisara Perera and Lasith Malinga straight down the ground. He proved South Africa could be competitive and could come back after being under pressure in the first two matches, and even large sections of the third. And what a difference an over can almost make. Perera hit Robin Peterson for the second-most expensive over in ODI cricket to throw Sri Lanka back into contention after they slumped to 93 for 7. The 35 runs included five sixes and a four, Perera displaying his prowess, especially over the leg-side.Like Miller, he showed the temperament required to succeed in conditions where the surfaces are sluggish – survive first, thrive later. Unlike the South African, Perera was asked to do too much at the end.Because Miller did not have a target to chase, he had less pressure on him. His strike rate hovered between 70 and 80 for most of his stay at the crease as he settled in. He needed AB de Villiers to usher him through the period where even singles were hard to come by and soon realised patience would pay off.Only at the very end, when Perera and Malinga seemed to have dinner rather than death bowling on their minds, did Miller pounce on anything too full and one which was too short. Miller registered the first South African half-century on the tour after their top order failed – Hashim Amla’s absence is growing glaring as each match goes by.South Africa tried a third opening pair in as many matches with Lions’ team-mates Alviro Petersen and Quinton de Kock fronting up first. Both were watchful but de Kock was unable to contain his attacking instincts and was vulnerable outside the offstump. He offered a chance in the fourth over when he swung at a wide one without any foot movement but Tillakaratne Dilshan at slip could not hold on. Sri Lanka hit back two balls later when Malinga bowled his first short ball and Petersen tried to hook too early, only to glove it to Kumar Sangakkara.Sri Lanka’s attack continued to find the edge of de Kock’s bat and the youngster fell on his sword to open South Africa’s middle up to a familiar state of panic. Both JP Duminy and Faf du Plessis posted insubstantial scores, with Duminy looking good again but unable to kick on and du Plessis uneasy at the crease and almost run out twice before actually being found short of his ground.De Villiers looked closer to breaking the lean run but Sri Lanka’s spinners and Ajanthan Mendis in particular did not let him get away. Mendis was difficult to pick while Rangana Herath and Dilshan kept things tight. It was only when Miller decided to hit out that the complexion of South Africa’s tour became a little rosier.Things got better for them from there as the fit-again Lonwabo Tsotsobe did the bulk of the damage upfront. He plucked three wickets in a six-over spell in which he extracted bounce, produced seam movement and partnered Morne Morkel to perfection.Morkel created pressure at his end with pace and steep lift, while Tsotsobe’s accuracy ensured eight dot balls were produced before the first run was scored. Sri Lanka’s were troubled by anything back of a length and Dilshan was the first to succumb. He spooned a catch to de Villiers at cover before Kumar Sangakkara went in the same over, chasing one that moved away.Upul Tharanga was also undone by bounce and edged Tsotsobe to Petersen at slip. With Sri Lanka at 16 for 3, South Africa were in control for the first time in the series. They held the match in their grip even as Mahela Jayawardene and Dinesh Chandimal combined for a 55-run stand. Robin Peterson reviewed an lbw shout against Jayawardene, which was going down leg and Jayawardene survived a stumping chance when Peterson was bowling but the left-arm spinner had the last laugh. Peterson bowled Jayawardene with one that skidded on, but that was the end of his involvement in the night.Peterson’s figures were ruined by Perera, who hit his first four sixes over the mid-wicket boundary. Then, he sent Peterson back over his head for four and he finished with the biggest hit of the night, over square leg. That over brought Sri Lanka’s required run-rate below six but, it would take more than one over to change the course of the match. Perera had a few more meaty hits, but he didn’t have a second over to match his first and when he was dismissed, Sri Lanka’s hopes went with him.

Sutherland's job guaranteed by CA chairman

Cricket Australia chairman Wally Edwards has given his chief executive James Sutherland the full support of the board, but there is no reason to believe that means what it usually does

Cricket Australia chairman Wally Edwards has given his chief executive James Sutherland the full support of the board, but there is no reason to believe that means what it usually does.As CEO of the game’s governing body in Australia since 2001, Sutherland is facing the kind of pressure he has artfully avoided for most of a 12-year tenure, for his role in Australian cricket’s descent into a pronounced dive. The sacking of Mickey Arthur and his replacement by Darren Lehmann a mere two weeks before the start of an Ashes series has led to serious questions about how Sutherland allowed the national team to reach a point of such disarray before intervening. However Edwards was unequivocal in his support for Sutherland, who recently negotiated a new A$500 million domestic television rights deal and remains secure in his position. There is no indication of the board offering its full support immediately before choosing to reach for the knife in the time-honoured manner. “Absolutely, without question,” Edwards told when asked whether Sutherland had the board completely in his corner. “We are very comfortable with the way things are tracking at that level.”Arguably the least visible chairman among cricket’s Full Member nations, Edwards stood to one side and watched Sutherland and the team performance manager Pat Howard explain at a press conference in Bristol why they had decided to jettison Arthur little more than halfway into a three-year contract. Edwards’ amiable, quiet way of doing business has been similar to Sutherland, but he supported the decisive action that took place before the Ashes squad assembled in Taunton.”That’s the reason for changing coaches, that things were not progressing the way we wanted, so that hard decision was made,” Edwards said. “That came initially from management. It would have been easy to ignore, to say let’s leave it for another year or six months and let the contract run its course, but we didn’t. That is what I call managing the business.”Sutherland and Howard were both offsite during the dramas of the India tour, leaving Arthur to mete out a punishment that caused former England captain Michael Atherton to suggest in the coach had been guaranteed to lose his job the moment he decided to suspend four players from a Test match for failing to follow instructions. Edwards did not deny more needed to be done.”That was a difficult time, no question, and it’s in those circumstances that the stress levels rise and issues that exist burst forth. That is what happened,” Edwards said. “We all wish that hadn’t happened, but it did happen. There are probably still issues there to be resolved. We will see how the new coach and new structure works.”In hindsight you can always do things better, but at the time it was a fast-moving issue and management and the board grappled with it as best we could with the information we had. We did what we thought was right at the time and backed management on the ground.”Sutherland did his share of deflecting in Bristol when pushed on whether he had considered his own position, and whether he had let things get out of hand just as Arthur, captain Michael Clarke and the team management had done in India and then during the Champions Trophy.”I don’t think it’s about me at all but it is about Australian cricket fans and what they want and expect from Australian cricketers,” Sutherland said. “It’s certainly caused me to reflect on issues and performance-related matters that as an organisation we need to take responsibility for.”

Derbyshire’s decision to make Shivnarine Chanderpaul the marquee signing of their return to First Division cricket could not have been demonstrated more amply as he put himself forward with all his customary patience and obstinacy as the cornerstone of a recovery.Chanderpaul, the 38-year-old left-hander with the most recognisable stance in international cricket, last year became only the second West Indian batsman to pass 10,000 Test match runs. Here he passed another milestone when his first-class aggregate rolled over 22,000. He would have supplemented that with his 67th first-class century, you imagine, had he not run out of partners, which might be a recurrent theme of his latest spell in county cricket.Chanderpaul was left stranded on 87 not out but at one stage it looked likely that it would be a good deal fewer as Nottinghamshire, whose visit to the Racecourse has been eagerly awaited since the champagne corks popped on their winning of Division Two title last September, threatened to inflict more embarrassment on the newcomers, less than a week after they were dismissed for 60 by Middlesex at Lord’s.Able to call on Stuart Broad to bolster an attack that under-performed in an opening-round defeat, Notts overcame the loss of Andre Adams to injury early in the day to have their neighbours from along the A52 in serious trouble at 75 for 6, in grave danger of suffering another feeble surrender.Such a fate would have risked significant damage to morale among a set of largely inexperienced players. Broad, moreover, was not of a mind to take pity on them. His first spell was a little erratic, with a sprinkling of no-balls and leg-byes, but he found his rhythm more readily than is sometimes the case at this time of year and his four wickets were a suitable reward. Derbyshire’s younger batsmen were reminded of the potency of his bouncer just often enough to keep their focus sharp but on a green, seaming pitch he bowled a fuller length effectively, getting good swing and finding the edge of the bat with reassuring frequency. He dealt the first blow to Derbyshire in his third over as Wayne Madsen, the skipper, fell into a delivery that umpire Martin Bodenham thought about for a few moments before raising the finger. Billy Godleman, who was beginning to look set after surviving a chance to Ed Cowan at third slip on 10, was then caught in two minds about whether to play or not, thin-edging a catch to wicketkeeper Chris Read as he tried to withdraw the bat.Dan Redfern didn’t help himself with a loose drive taken at gully and Jonathan Clare poked at one outside off stump but the wickets were earned. “He usually takes wickets for us,” Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, said afterwards. “I thought he bowled a good length, a bit fuller than in the past. He is swinging the ball and inducing the edges and I think it is important for him that he is that kind of bowler, who pitches the ball up and who has the bouncer as the surprise.”Broad’s appearances for Nottinghamshire have been rare ever since he moved from Leicestershire, his elevation to international cricket coming sooner than Newell anticipated. This is only his 12th appearance in the Championship for Notts, yet his return in those is 58 wickets at 24.27 runs each, which reflects well not only on his ability but his eagerness to serve his county. It is good news from Nottinghamshire’s point of view that there will be another opportunity for him next week, when Durham visit Trent Bridge and Graeme Swann, who had a net at Derby, will make his competitive comeback. Newell knows already that Adams, who has a suspected torn calf muscle, will not play.”He is going for a scan but the physio is pretty sure there is a tear in there and he won’t bowl again in this match or play against Durham,” Newell said. “We haven’t got another Championship game until the middle of May but if there is a tear it will be at least two to three weeks to heal.”Adams missed the end of last season with a similar injury and at 37 his powers of recovery are not what they were. After relying heavily on his wickets in the last three seasons – 189 of them in total – Nottinghamshire’s title ambitions would undoubtedly suffer should he have a prolonged absence.Broad bowled in five spells, which was probably more than would have been the case had Adams remained on the field. It was a wicket, moreover – one that pitch inspector David Capel will take a second look at – that would have suited Adams ideally, which only reinforces the merits of Chanderpaul’s four-hour vigil. The conditions prompted Nottinghamshire to pick Harry Gurney, a left-armer who bowls a fuller length, ahead of Ajmal Shahzad, who might not have been so effective. As the ball softened, Chanderpaul found support eventually from Clare, who perished frustratingly on 49, and Tony Palladino, who made 39 before becoming a fourth victim for Gurney. Their partnerships with Chanderpaul added 96 and 68.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will felicitate its chief curator, Anurudda Polonowita, at the end of next month’s second Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.Polonowita, who will be retiring as chief curator on March 31, has been involved with the game in Sri Lanka for 53 years in different capacities, including as vice-president of SLC and chief selector. He also played 20 first-class matches, including an unofficial Test against India in Ahmedabad in 1964.”We have plans to felicitate Polonowita in recognition of the contribution he has made to Sri Lanka cricket,” Ajith Jayasekera, Sri Lanka Cricket’s CEO, said.Polonowita was involved in the development and construction of the Khettarama Stadium (now the Premadasa Stadium) in Colombo, and was encouraged by former Sri Lankan president R Premadasa to pursue his interest in curating. “I did the pitches and ground, and it was during that time that he asked me what I wanted. I told him I would like to go to Australia and do a course in curatorship,” Polonowita said. “Within a couple of months, it was arranged and I was sent to Australia for three months.”Polonowita was instrumental in setting up a curators’ department in 2000, where seven graduates with agricultural degrees were recruited. Speaking of his protégés, he said: “They were trained under me and now they are recruited as curators at stadiums owned by SLC.”
