Newcastle eyeing late deal for Dele Alli

A major update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Tottenham outcast Dele Alli…

What’s the talk?

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that the Magpies are now looking to secure a deal for the England international ahead of one of their Premier League rivals.

He tweeted: “EXCL: Newcastle make dramatic late attempt to pip Everton to Dele Alli signing after losing out on Lingard. #NUFC have enquired to take Dele on loan just as permanent Everton move enters final stages. Unclear if it will succeed.”

St James’ rocking

This move could get St James’ Park rocking, as Alli has the potential to be a stunning addition to Eddie Howe’s squad and possibly help them to secure Premier League survival this season.

They are currently 18th in the table and struggling badly, with two league wins under their belt so far in 2021/22, coming against Leeds and Burnley.

Alli has proven himself at the top level in England, with 67 goals and 61 assists in 269 games for Spurs, This includes 51 goals and 37 assists in 180 Premier League matches for the north Londonders, and he has also managed eight or more league goals in four separate seasons.

This suggests that he could have the quality to come in and offer a real goal threat for the Magpies in the coming months if they are able to secure this deal. Therefore, St James’ Park could be rocking if he comes through the door, as his pedigree will surely come with an anticipation and excitement that he could be the player to pull Howe’s side over the line.

Along with that, the supporters could also be buzzing to see PIF hijacking Everton’s deal for Alli as the Toffees are only four points ahead of them in the table. This means that they could stop a relegation rival from strengthening their squad, whilst duly improving their own in the process, making this a sensational piece of potential business by the club.

An adventure breaking new ground

It is tempting to look at these matches – two Twenty20 internationals between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, being played in the USA – as precisely the reason why tournaments like IPL prosper

The Big PictureIt is tempting to look at these matches – two Twenty20 internationals between Sri Lanka and New Zealand, being played in the USA – as precisely the reason why tournaments like IPL prosper. Twenty20 is the best vehicle for the globalisation of the game, which somehow – rightly or wrongly – seems to be a big concern for the administrators. The ICC sees the USA, with a team full of Asians and a country boasting enough immigrants to constitute a crowd for a match, as a prospective market. Since the two teams had been to the Caribbean, why not have them stop over on their way back.Yet, on another level, there is much to suggest that this series is yet another example of the ICC sanctioning an ill-timed series, one without context. It hasn’t been even a week since the end of the World Twenty20, and the fatigue, even for the slam-bang format, was evident among the audience during the bilateral series earlier this week between West Indies and South Africa. It would have been foolish to expect anything but in the first place: there is only so much Twenty20 people can take.In any event, it is going to be a huge weekend for cricket in the USA, especially as a venue. Already the series has been cut short because of poor floodlighting. It is the first time two Test teams are playing in America, and how the matches go from an organisational point of view will have a bearing on the future of international cricket in the USA.There has also been concern over whether New Zealand and Sri Lanka, small countries with small diaspora, will be able to attract enough supporters, leave alone taking the game to the natives, which should be the real aim. The onus will be on the teams to play attractive cricket; it is not easy to make a pitching-obsessed nation fall in love with bowling. They can’t turn up jaded, like West Indies and South Africa did, three days after the World Twenty20 final.Form guide (most recent first)New Zealand LWLWW
Sri Lanka LWLWWWatch out for…Mahela Jayawardene and Daniel Vettori are the complete antitheses of hitters and pitchers from baseball. If they are both at their best, who knows the Americans might just see the light.
The pitch and conditions are a complete unknown. “There’s a New Zealand groundsman here looking after it [the pitch] and preparing it,” said Ross Taylor. “To be honest, we don’t really know what to expect.” Isolated thunderstorms are also forecast for the weekend.Team newsBetween the World Twenty20 and now, New Zealand have lost Jesse Ryder to another injury, and Shane Bond for good. Gareth Hopkins has a knee injury so Brendon McCullum is likely to keep wicket, while offspinning allrounder Rob Nicol is set to make his debut.New Zealand (possible): 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Aaron Redmond, 3 Martin Guptill, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Scott Styris, 6 Jacob Oram, 7 Daniel Vettori (capt.), 8 Rob Nicol , 9 Kyle Mills, 10 Ian Butler, 11 Andy McKay.Sri Lanka should retain their combination from the World Twenty20 before Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya take a break.
Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Mahela Jayawardene 2 Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt. & wk), 4 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Chinthaka Jayasinghe, 8 Thissara Perera, 9 Suraj Randiv, 10 Thilan Thushara, 11 Lasith Malinga.Stats and trivia Brendon McCullum, at 1081, is the highest run-getter in T20Is. Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, with 743 and 711 runs, are numbers four and five on the list. New Zealand have won four out of their seven games against Sri Lanka, including their latest victory in the World Twenty20.Quotes”Miami is a new place for all of us. Most of the guys haven’t been to the States. We’ve had a look around, went to a baseball game. It’s something different, going out of your routine of playing against top nations in venues you’re quite familiar with. It will be good fun.”

“We’ve been waiting a long time for this. This is part of what we’ve been calling Destination USA. We took, with the board’s help, a view to try and bring in the best teams in the world and show that the United States is open for business as far as cricket is concerned.”

West Ham set for Duje Caleta-Car talks

Writing on his Patreon profile, reliable club insider ExWHUemployee has made a West Ham United transfer claim involving Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car.

The Lowdown: Hammers have bid rejected…

According to reports, amid David Moyes’ last-gasp attempts to sign a new centre-back this month, the Irons have actually had an offer rejected for the Croatia international.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-copy/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, The Scottish Daily Mail’s print edition (page 75, via West Ham Zone) claim that the east Londoners tabled a loan bid for Caleta-Car which was swiftly turned down as Marseille apparently demand a permanent deal.

He is a familiar name to plenty of Hammers fans as their club had actually ‘agreed’ a fee to sign him in 2020 (Mike McGrath), but the move eventually fell through.

Alas, it appears they aren’t quite done in their efforts to bring the defender to London, with ExWHUemployee now sharing some news.

The Latest: Ex makes Caleta-Car claim…

Writing on Patreon, the club source claimed that ‘talks will also happen’ with Marseille in this last week of the trabsfer window to see if a possible ‘compromise’ can be reached as Moyes chases an agreement.

Ex reiterated that West Ham, and by extension recruitment chief Rob Newman, would ‘like to initially loan’ Caleta-Car, considering that he is unproven in the Premier League.

Marseille do not want to agree a temporary transfer but that apparently won’t stop the Irons in their attempts to see if there is a middle ground.

The Verdict: Interesting final week…

West Ham are arguably in dire need of a world-class central defender and backup striker to Michail Antonio, with Moyes running out of time to bolster either one of these positions.

Amassing 20 caps with Croatia at international level, Caleta-Car could prove to be a shrewd addition if West Ham can reach a compromise with his current club.

The 6 foot 3 powerhouse, who was called ‘quality’ by his defensive partner Alvaro Gonzalez (Ligue 1), could apparently cost up to £20m on an outright permanent deal (talkSPORT) – arguably a small price to pay for a player still fairly young and solid on the big stage.

Over Caleta-Car’s Europa League outings this season, only Kurt Zouma has averaged more interceptions per match (three) than the Ligue 1 ace (1.7) when compared to West Ham’s current squad (WhoScored). Furthermore, he has managed a consistent two clearances per 90, with only Zouma and Ben Johnson making more among Moyes’ squad (WhoScored).

With the clock ticking down quickly on this transfer window, we urge Newman and co to step up their pursuit and back Moyes ahead of a tricky final run of 2021/22.

Spurs news: Late Dele Alli exit likely

Dele Alli is expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur before deadline day next week…

What’s the word?

That’s according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, who delivered a fresh update on the 25-year-old’s situation after he was left out of the squad to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

“Dele Alli left out of Tottenham squad for Chelsea today in last game before transfer window shuts a week tomorrow. #THFC open to 25yo midfielder moving on loan (contract 2024). No appealing offers yet – good chance it happens late,” he tweeted alongside an accompanying article.

Whilst the north Londoners are yet to receive any sort of offer that is appealing, it’s thought that it would be a pretty straightforward deal to complete, so if it rumbles on towards deadline day, it will be no issue.

Once tipped to be worth over £100m back in 2017, the 37-cap England international is now valued at just £22.5m by Transfermarkt.

Time’s up?

Things have quickly gone from bad to worse for Alli.

He struggled to make much of a mark under Jose Mourinho, who branded him “lazy” in training, last season and it was easy to dismiss this as another one of the Portuguese’s antics after his relationship with Paul Pogba at Manchester United.

But now he’s hardly featured for Nuno Santo or Antonio Conte this season, going from an England regular and the “best 21-year-old in the world”, according to Mauricio Pochettino several years ago, to a bit-part backup for a side that was knocked out of the Europa Conference League group stages.

Across the 2016/17 and 2017/18 top-flight campaigns, the attacking dynamo delivered 27 goals and 17 assists from 69 starts, via WhoScored, leading to comparisons to the likes of Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes.

But since then, it’s a frustrating tale of just nine goals and six assists in the last two-and-a-half years of league action, leaving much of the Lilywhites faithful angry with his attitude and poor form.

As relayed by This is Futbol, many fans around N17 would be absolutely delighted to see him move on this month, so they will surely be buzzing by Ornstein’s recent claim.

It may happen “late”, but Alli will surely be at a new club come February 1st.

Leeds: Noel Whelan reacts to Joe Gelhardt injury

Leeds United pundit Noel Whelan has been reacting to Joe Gelhardt’s recent injury, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Gelhardt sidelined

The 19-year-old has featured heavily in recent months with the likes of Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo out through injury.

Gelhardt has provided three assists in just 301 minutes of Premier League action, while also scoring his first Leeds goal against Chelsea.

His last appearance came against Burnley in a 3-1 win at Elland Road, with the forward becoming a firm fan favourite at Elland Road.

However, as revealed by Marcelo Bielsa, Gelhardt is now set for a spell on the sidelines following a training ground injury which looks set to keep him out for ‘three to four weeks’.

The Latest: Whelan reacts

Whelan, who reports for BBC Radio Leeds, was talking to Football Insider about Gelhardt’s ankle issue.

He labelled the teenager as Leeds’ ‘surprise package’ and described the update as ‘huge’ and tipped the youngster to be a ‘massive miss’.

“This is huge.

“He’ll be a massive miss for Leeds United because he’s playing with no fear. He’s a player who can really drive and take the game to opposition defensives.

“We’ve seen him do it a couple of times before, winning penalties at important times through really positive running.

“He’s a player that the opposition don’t know too much about, as well. He’s been a real surprise package for us.

“We’re lacking options when it comes to that central figure leading the line, especially with Patrick Bamford also out yet again. We’re down to the bare bones.”

The Verdict: No signs of slowing up

We’re now into the second half of the season, and the club’s injury list is showing no signs of slowing up, so a signing or two could come in handy before the end of the month.

The Whites may well be without a whopping 11 players against West Ham on Sunday, with question marks over all of their senior attacking options alongside youngsters Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood.

It would be remarkable if Leeds’ injury issues last the whole 2021/22 campaign, but at this moment in time and following Gelhardt’s injury, you wouldn’t bet against it.

If Bielsa can keep the Whites in the Premier League for a third season, you could argue that it would be just as good an achievement as the club’s ninth-placed finish last term.

The Blues reached a comfortable 5 for 332 on the first day against South Australia in a game that has no impact on the finals.New South Wales were 3 for 43 in the gloomy conditions after losing Phillip Hughes, Simon Katich and Phil Jaques, but Khawaja stepped up to register his third hundred of the season. He put on 164 with Peter Forrest to regain the upper hand, finishing with 102 off 138 balls.Smith joined Forrest, who went for 78, and had warmed up for his trip to New Zealand with an unbeaten 72 when bad light forced an early end. He collected 10 fours and a six and will be chasing back-to-back Shield centuries on the second day.
