Matthew Mott will have to choose between coaching New South Wales or Kochi if he gets a job with the new IPL franchise. Mott went to India “five or six weeks ago” but said he was still waiting to hear back from the organisation.”It’s just wait and see,” he said in the Sydney Morning Herald. “But it’s getting close to the season [starting in Australia] and you have to draw the line somewhere.”Mott spent two seasons as an assistant to John Buchanan at Kolkata, but the demands of the IPL sides have changed and he has been told by New South Wales he won’t be able to juggle both roles. The Australian domestic campaign starts in October and the Blues are already deep into pre-season training.”Motty has indicated to me that he wants to go through the interview process with Kochi,” David Gilbert, New South Wales’ chief executive, said. “I respect that. But if he is offered the job and decides to accept it, then he would have to resign from the role here. Motty realises that something has to give. This is a full-time job here at Cricket NSW.”Mott has one year remaining on his deal with the Blues, who he has coached for three years. He was interviewed for the New Zealand job last year but stayed in Sydney.

di venuto shines as wickets tumble

Durham’s Michael Di Venuto made a fine century but was the only batsman who came to terms with the Chester-le-Street pitch as 17 wickets fell on the first day against Yorkshire

16-Aug-2010
ScorecardDurham’s Michael Di Venuto made a fine century but was the only batsman who came to terms with the Chester-le-Street pitch as 17 wickets fell on the first day against Yorkshire. With both teams in contention for the title, Durham recovered from 54 for 5 to reach 213 and Yorkshire reached the close on 125 for 7.Tim Bresnan left afterwards to link up briefly with the England squad in London, but he was outshone by Ajmal Shahzad, who took a career-best 5for 51. Bresnan took only one wicket but was sent in to bat at number three and made 25 before heading for Newcastle Airport. He will return to Durham on Wednesday if not required for the Oval Test and during his absence will be replaced by Oliver Hannon-Dalby.Yorkshire put Durham in and the ball nipped around under heavy morning cloud, but Shahzad had to settle for coming on as first change. He pinned Gordon Muchall lbw with his fourth ball and two balls later produced a beautiful delivery to knock over Dale Benkenstein’s off stump.Shahzad later rattled the stumps twice in three balls as he was rewarded for bowling full and straight with just enough movement to beat the bat. The fall of 17 wickets was unlikely to have unduly worried pitch liaison officer Mike Denness. There was some variable bounce, but generally the bowling was better than the batting and only Phil Mustard gave Di Venuto, who made 117, any support for Durham.Yorkshire’s most obvious resistance came from Anthony McGrath, whose 28 not out took him past 1,000 runs for the season, as Mitch Claydon removed the openers and then Steve Harmison took three wickets. Harmison’s victims included Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale, who was given out lbw first ball but indicated that he had nicked it.Two Durham batsmen were also reluctant to depart as neither Mustard, who made 53, nor Mark Stoneman thought they had touched the ball when given out caught behind. Di Venuto edged Steve Patterson just short of Adil Rashid at second slip on 9 and grafted his way to 43 at lunch. Both he and Mustard were beaten in the first few overs of the afternoon, but as the cloud broke up runs suddenly began to flow. They put on 115 and the next highest stand was 30 for the last wicket, in which Harmison equalled his season’s best score of 4. Di Venuto was on 97 when Harmison was dropped at third slip by Jonny Bairstow off Shahzad.Although he held two catches, that was Bairstow’s second miss and it allowed Di Venuto to complete his fourth century in three seasons against Yorkshire. He turned a short ball from Richard Pyrah to fine leg for his 14th four to reach his hundred off 156 balls and straight drove the next for another four to bring up the 200 and earn a batting point.

Newcastle eyeing up Leandro Trossard move

An update has emerged regarding Newcastle United and their interest in Brighton attacker Leandro Trossard…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are now interested in a deal to sign the Belgian winger as they have added him to their list of potential targets.

The report claims that the Toon are eyeing a move for the £15.3m-rated gem as they look to bolster their squad heading into the 2022/23 campaign. He is out of contract in the summer of 2023 and it remains to be seen whether or not Brighton will be able to pin him down to a new deal.

Howe will love it

Eddie Howe will surely love this prospective swoop from the Tyneside club, as Trossard is a proven Premier League performer who can come in and add to the Magpies’ options out wide.

Toon legend Alan Shearer once dubbed him “outstanding” and it is easy to see why when you look at the 27-year-old’s statistics in the top flight. He has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.02 this term, after a score of 7.03 last season, and has produced 10 goals and six assists since the start of 2020/21.

This shows that Trossard is delivering consistently impressive displays whilst chipping in with goals and assists from out wide. He has proven that he can perform in the Premier League, as shown by these statistics, and that is why Howe would surely love to have him at St James’ Park.

Instead of bringing in a player without experience in the English top flight, whether they come from the lower leagues or abroad, Newcastle can sign a player that they know can deliver. Whilst it is impossible to guarantee that he will be a good player for the Toon, the statistics suggest that he has a very high chance of being a strong addition to the squad.

It could also be a fantastic move by the club from a financial point of view. If Brighton are unable to tie down Trossard to a new deal, PIF could strike a bargain for the Belgian as they could tempt the Seagulls into selling for a cut-price fee.

Albion will lose him for nothing next year if he does not put pen to paper on an extension, and the Magpies can use that as leverage to secure a great piece of business.

It is now down to PIF to make sure that they are able to convince Brighton to part ways with the Belgian ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, as Howe will be buzzing if he is able to work with the 27-year-old next term.

Only ‘massive offer’ could turn Neves’ head

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves would only potentially leave the club this summer if a ‘massive offer’ is lodged, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Lowdown: Neves enjoying superb season

There have been a number of strong performers for Bruno Lage’s side this season but Neves has stood out as one of the best, excelling in the middle of the park.

The 24-year-old has made 21 Premier League appearances, including 19 starts, and has averaged 2.2 tackles per game along with an 82.2% pass completion rate.

However, Neves has been linked with a move away this summer, with Manchester United arguably the front-runners at the moment.

The Latest: Journalist makes ‘massive’ claim

Spaking to GiveMeSport, Jones, a ‘transfer insider’, hinted that Neves was likely to stay put at Molineux, unless an enormous bid comes Wolves’ way.

The journalist stated: “It will take a massive offer to turn his head. He’s been very loyal in his time there. From the moment he joined the club, it was a huge show of faith.”

The Verdict: Vital he stays put

In truth, Wolves may have to accept that Neves may not be at the club forever, having been hailed as a ‘next level’ player by Lage in the recent past.

For now, though, it is crucial that they keep hold of such a prized asset, especially with fellow midfield hero Joao Moutinho turning 36 later in the year.

The control and quality that Neves brings in the middle of the park is so influential, and if he were to suddenly move on, it could leave a gaping void in a crucial area of the pitch, especially if Moutinho is phased out too.

Securing European football would certainly be a good way of ensuring that he stays, at least for another campaign or two.

In other news, one Wolves player is reportedly ‘in the sights’ of another club. Find out who it is here.

Yorkshire score consolation win in Derby

Yorkshire ended a disappointing Twenty20 campaign on a high with a six-wicket win over Derbyshire who missed out on a quarter-final place following the Friends Provident t20 clash at Derby

18-Jul-2010
ScorecardYorkshire ended a disappointing Twenty20 campaign on a high with a six-wicket win over Derbyshire who missed out on a quarter-final place following the Friends Provident t20 clash at Derby. A half-century from skipper Andrew Gale and an unbeaten 48 from former Derbyshire batsman Gary Ballance took the visitors to their target of 138 with four balls remaining.Clint McKay wrapped up victory in style with a six – only the second of the match – off Tim Groenewald but the Falcons’ hopes of making the last eight had already been ended by Northamptonshire’s win against Durham. Derbyshire’s batsmen struggled on a slow pitch with Wes Durston’s 39 from 35 balls the top score in a below-par total of 137 for 7.The Falcons went into their final North Group game without big hitting South African batsman Loots Bosman who was out with an injured knee and his replacement, Chesney Hughes, shared an opening stand of 41 with Durston. Hughes struggled to get the ball away and made 14 in seven overs before he was bowled swinging at Richard Pyrah and Greg Smith went in the next over when he came down the pitch to Adil Rashid and was bowled. The Falcons hit only four boundaries in the first 10 overs and their hopes of raising the tempo in the second half of the innings suffered a blow when Durston slapped a wide full toss from Lee Hodgson to short cover. Derbyshire were in danger of falling short of a competitive total when Jon Clare was bowled by Hodgson for 10 and Wayne Madsen was lured down the pitch by David Wainwright and stumped by yards. The first six of the innings came in the 18th over when Garry Park latched on to a long hop from Wainwright and some clever improvisation from Robin Peterson, whose unbeaten 32 from 24 balls included three fours, at least gave the Falcons a decent score to defend. The Falcons’ hopes soared briefly when Adam Lyth pulled a low full toss from Smith to deep midwicket in the second over and there was more encouragement for the home supporters three overs later. Herschelle Gibbs played one crunching straight drive for four off Groenewald but he went for another big shot off the next ball and skied a catch to extra cover. At 30 for 2, the game was wide open but Gale and Ballance tilted it towards Yorkshire with a stand of 85 in 13 overs although Derbyshire had a strong run-out appeal rejected in the 14th over when Gale was on 41.By the time Gale departed for 55 from 56 balls, bowled moving across his stumps trying to work Charl Langeveldt through midwicket, the game was slipping away from the home side although Yorkshire wobbled briefly before crossing the line.Jonathan Bairstow was needlessly run out going for a second in the penultimate over but McKay settled any nerves by lifting Groenewald over deep square leg to win what had been a strangely flat game in front of a disappointingly low crowd.

Newcastle hold Nikola Milenkovic talks

Newcastle United have made contact with Fiorentina over exit-bound centre-back Nikola Milenkovic, according to Calciomercato (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

Milenkovic is approaching five years at Fiorentina, having joined from Partizan Belgrade in the summer of 2017.

But the 24-year-old is now well into the final 18 months of his deal at La Viola.

The 6 foot 3 defender, reportedly the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Wolves and West Ham United in 2021, is valued at £20.7million by Transfermarkt.

Newcastle did add a centre-back to their ranks in January, paying Brighton and Hove Albion £13.5million for Dan Burn.

The latest

The report (via SW) states that Fiorentina have ‘had contact’ with Newcastle over Milenkovic in ‘recent days’.

The club have made a ‘pact’ with the Serbian, whereby he can leave if a ‘fair offer’ arrives. It therefore ‘seems almost obvious’ that he will depart at the end of the campaign.

Newcastle, though, do face competition from two Serie A giants in the form of Juventus and AC Milan.

Juve have apparently been tracking him for ‘some time’, while Milan have already formalised their interest.

The verdict

When you look at Milenkovic, what stands most out is his ability in the air. He wins 3.6 aerial duels per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the 86th percentile among positional peers in the top five European leagues (via FBRef).

In fact, of all the players who contested 100 or more in those competitions in 2020/21, he had the best success rate (via WhoScored).

Indeed, he could be a dominant presence at the heart of The Magpies’ backline for a number of years.

We’ll have to see if the allure of joining PIF’s hugely ambitious project, and of playing in the Premier League, is enough for them to see off the Italian competition.

In other news, PIF are also in talks over this wide man.

Bell fifty leads Warwickshire win

Ian Bell’s fourth Clydesdale Bank 40 half-century of the season maintainedWarwickshire’s 100% record with a convincing six-wicket victory over Kent atEdgbaston

Cricinfo staff16-May-2010
ScorecardIan Bell’s fourth Clydesdale Bank 40 half-century of the season maintainedWarwickshire’s 100% record with a convincing six-wicket victory over Kent atEdgbaston. The England batsman contributed a stylish 55 from 71 balls before the Group Cleaders – unbeaten in 40-over cricket since August 2008 – wrapped up their fifthstraight win in the competition. The margin would have been greater but for a substantial Kent recovery after 6ft 8in pace bowler Boyd Rankin had taken three wickets in five balls in their collapse to 73 for 7 after 19 overs.Skipper Robert Key survived to reach 87 from 98 deliveries and eventually foundsubstantial support when Rob Ferley made 52, his highest score in all forms ofcounty cricket with Kent and Nottinghamshire.Their partnership of 94 in 17 overs lifted the Spitfires to a more respectable192 for 9 – but this was nowhere near enough to stretch Warwickshire. Bell put on 68 with Jim Troughton (24) and even when he was run out, going for a single after Darren Maddy played the ball to point, the untroubled home side finished the job with five overs to spare.Maddy, adding an unbeaten 43 to his bowling return of 2 for 31, and IanWestwood (21 not out) cleared off the last 65 runs from 45 balls. Kent had struggled from the outset as Warwickshire’s front-line seamers wobbled the new ball around in favourable bowling conditions.Key and Joe Denly played and missed as Neil Carter and Chris Woakes opened upwith successive maidens and the slide set in as soon as Denly guided a ball fromCarter to Troughton at backward point.Woakes, warming up for England Lions duty against Bangladesh this week, hadMartin van Jaarsveld taken at slip and Kent’s middle order caved in withRankin’s intervention in a dramatic second over. The Irishman’s bounce and movement accounted for Geraint Jones and DarrenStevens, both caught behind by Tim Ambrose, and young left hander Alex Blakeedged to Darren Maddy at second slip. Ambrose took a third catch as Woakes removed Azhar Mahmood in a spell of 2 for 29 and Rankin had four wickets in a List A innings for the first time when Simon Cook holed out to deep square leg.Warwickshire’s charge was at last held up when Ferley, in his first countymatch of the season, dug in with Key and gradually built up the momentum tolaunch a sustained counter-attack.Key hit 10 fours before falling at extra cover for the first of two wickets forMaddy. The former Leicestershire all-rounder bowled Ferley with the nextdelivery after he reached 50 with a reverse sweep for his fifth boundary.
